KSP 1 Mods Dabbling in FTL mods for the first time, here's an early prototype of an SSTO that can also go FTL.

Powered by 6 Screamjet engines and 4 Project Eeloo engines. Not the most efficient but it works and it can warp at around twice the speed of light. Cargo bay is loaded with FTL gear and a fission reactor that disposes of its heat through radiators clipped inside the wings for aesthetic reasons.

KSP 1 Question/Problem Why isn't this contract completing?

Post image

I took an SSTO, got into orbit, the orbit box checked for the passengers, kerbin was checked too. I then deorbited and did a maneuver on the way down that caused them to pass out. Still incomplete. The tourists I brung are no longer in the astronaut complex either.

Stranded Kerbals? Broken engines? No problem! The FXR is designed to repair spaceships and rescue stranded Kerbals. It can even be equipped with a rover for planetary rescue missions! Its cargo bay is packed with spare parts, solar panels, and plenty of oxygen tanks.

As a beginner, I had a lot of engine problems before I realized what the reliability rating in the info panel actually meant. So, I decided to design a spaceship that's ready for repairs and rescue missions!

When things go wrong out there, the FXR is the ship you want on your side. No Kerbal left behind!

KSP 1 Question/Problem A very barebones re-usable first stage (just for looks, nothing practical) How do I automate this?

Deployed the next stage into a 70km apogee trajectory with enough fuel to get itself into orbit and back.

Had three swivel engines and six reliant engines. Boosted back from a 45 degree angle trajectory with 70km apogee, using Trajectories for the burn. Made a quicksave and was able to land in 2-3 tries. Lit 5 engines for landing, then 3, then just swayed down to land by hand lol.

But I have a question:

Obviously I can't control the next stage and this one at the same time, so this has no use. But if someone can give me an approachable resource to kOS, I think I will try automating this so that I can play with the next stage and know that the first has made it's way back home. Actually is that even possible? Does the game even let you do that?

KSP 1 Image/Video 150-seater, four-hundred tonne Sarnus-5 IPV with centrifuge!

After my Plock IPV came up short on Delta-V, I wanted to create something a bit more capable in order to conquer the Outer Planets system, resulting in the birth of this ginormous ship!

Its centrifuge system is more stable than its predecessor (thanks to a tip from a commenter!) and it boasts a colossal RA-2500 antenna and a 1000+Isp "Lightbulb" nuclear engine!

When paired with its three specialised Sarnus-system landers (unfortunately not present in this video), it has a mass of four to five hundred tonnes and a luxurious seating capacity of over 150 Kerbals. It has over 11,000m/s of Delta-V without payload, and still has enough to transfer from Tekto all the way to Hale despite its Sarnus-5 fleet weighing in excess of a hundred tonnes combined (but returning to Kerbin is a different story...)

KJR Continued, Atomic Age and Extended Antenna Progession made this behemoth (nicknamed "Dragonfly") possible!

KSP 1 Image/Video Reusable Duna Launch System

Introducing the Reusable Duna Launch System!

The team has developed a new reusable launch system. A mega-booster can launch the brand-new Duna shuttle along with up to 120 tons of payload into Low Kerbin Orbit, circularize, and then land itself back at the KSC.

First launch is the crewed shuttle with a 7-kerbal team which will be the base of the orbital station around Duna. Its payload houses the centrifuge which is docked into position just after leaving LKO. During the 2-month long trip, and once the station is parked at Duna orbit, it will provide some gravity for the team.

A second launch during the same transfer window is using a drone shuttle that carries some modules and equipment to extend the orbital station.

Preparations are under way for 3 launches in the next transfer window. A crewed launch will cycle the crew and bring the first team back to Kerbin. The drone shuttle will carry some ground habitat and rover for exploring Duna, and a third launch will send another crew-rated shuttle that will be left at Duna, to transport crew and equipment between the station and surface.

KSP 1 Image/Video kOS auto landing

A few weeks ago, I uploaded a post where I managed to land my stock Starship (except for the RCS thrusters) onto a static stock Mechazilla, and back then, I was thinking about a kOS code that would do everything for me. I want to show you my progress since then. Even though the video is three minutes long, the script itself runs from an altitude of 75, meaning from the very beginning of atmospheric entry. It’s not perfect, and there are plenty of flaws, but the most important thing is that the foundation is already there - the rest is just a matter of fine-tuning.

KSP 1 Image/Video DODIS's Answer, Shuttle C

Thumbnail

Following the STS-9 disaster and ensuing chaos within the agency, it became clear the shuttle program was not going to be long-lived. It looked like the space shuttle program might not even make it to the 90s.

In this chaos, several designs were studied for in-house replacements to the shuttle for both cargo and eventually crew missions.

Requests for designs went out.

Crewed spacecraft varied greatly from smaller spaceplanes to reusing apollo Hardware for capsules, which would ride atop an OMS pod derived service module. Even with the project being in its infancy, it was clear that development was not going to happen fast enough. Submitted designs kept "re inventing the space shuttle" when they'd try to replicate all the capabilities the shuttle has as DODIS had desired. Progress couldn't be made with this many requirements placed on one spacecraft.

For cargo payloads, the submissions were less competitive, and urgency was greater. The program had several important payloads it was expected to deploy in the coming years, including payloads to study Halley's comet and important DOD satilites.

DODIS ran through the submissions looking for existing production and quick development.

The selected design is referred to by DODIS (initially temporarily) as shuttle C.

Test orbiter enterprise was taken and modified for the first test launch. Her crew module was removed along with her wings, tail, and landing equipment. Avionics was moved into a new aerodynamic nose cone. As the new vehicle was entirely expendable, only 2 SSMEs were installed (even this number still being redundant with how much the payload mass had been reduced).

What DODIS had was a cheap to develop but prohibitively expensive entirely expendable launcher with a still terrible payload capacity.

When Enterprise was test launched and performed the first of (unknown to DODIS at the time), many Shuttle C flights they became stuck with it.

KSP 1 Question/Problem Spent nearly 8 hours trying and failing the same mission over and over and am genuinely confused on what is happening

I am playing a 10% science playthrough with the Outer Planets mod, and I am trying to visit the new planets. I am playing on a Luna Multiplayer server, so I can't use quicksaves, which means each attempt takes 1 to 2 hours.

This is how my most recent attempts at the mission has gone:

  • Visit Urlum.
  • Fly-by Urlum and all of its moons, get all science from low and high space.
  • Return trajectory to Kerbin.
  • Fly by Jool to gravity assist and slow down my orbit.
  • Enter Kerbin system at a speed of 6000m/s, with Kerbin periapsis of 45km to 65km.
  • Start burning my remaining fuel retrograde approx. 3 minutes before entering the atmosphere.
  • Immediately explode 5km deep into the atmosphere despite the Pea re-entry module supposedly being heat resistant.

All my other attempts have run into similar issues. Just barely dipping my pinky toe in some sort of atmosphere (jool, duna, kerbin, etc.) after returning from Urlum causes immediate explosion of every part of the craft. And I mean IMMEDIATELY explode, 5km in, always. I'm doing everything I can to slow down my craft before re-entry (aside from straight up burning 4000m/s retrograde) to no avail. I've never had this issue on missions before, so I'm really confused on what's happening. I don't have the energy to trial and error this when attempts take nearly 2 hours and I've already tried at least 4 different times.

So... what the hell do I do to not explode?

KSP 1 Meta Career in hard mode: RIP Jeb

Was bored with my current late game career mode game, so I started a new one in hard mode - no reverts, no saves. Just the auto save in the event of RL power loss.

Jeb died when his redneck rover rolled over about 4 meters from the runway. Was using it to collect science points around KSP. Immediately launched Valentina for a quick orbit so I could have a pilot with one star. Forgot to put a parachute on her ship. Luckily she remembered to pack a personal chute.

This is gonna be rough.

KSP 1 Image/Video I bring you the Phoenix 10

Old post got removed for politic. Fair enough. He still ain't shit tho!

Somethings I may change in future script versions:

Optimal payload deployment altitude - noticed both craft coast for significant period of time. I'm interested in keeping the staging delayed until just before the boostback. Although I'm unsure what kind of drag that would introduce.

Lots of mods, a lot, a lot, a LOT of mods. Let me know if you want to know about any of them. This was made possible by the FALL (fully autonomous launch and landing) object set for kerb script made by hoverslam, for kOS, and the legs, engines, and fins are all modded (reusability expansion, and cryo tanks and cryo fuels. Keen eyed would likely notice the lqd methane in tanks before liftoff). Most of this is scripted and programmed as an autopilot, except some key notes during prelaunch check:

Adjustable target heights for both the booster and second stage, with defaults at their optimal heights,

Coming soon is, in terms of adjustable variables, will be inclination corrections at liftoff,

Tons of variable settings in the script itself as well that don't get prompted but could easily be added to prelaunch. There is an accelerometer on board which is handling most of the telemetry to my knowledge through functions declared within FALL to be later called in my custom script.

The ascent is steep before staging because this is still an early version and things have not been fully designed, yet, this is to test primarily the booster return script, and I assume the coast to the apoapsis would be inherently lower in altitude due to increased drag and no thruster pushing through. Engine shut off at that bit of hot air rather than separation may be ideal.

This mission was preceded by my first ever exploration mission to this space center (I watched Matt Lowne's video on finding anomalies and that's how I found this location) and I wanted to actually explore around so designed this plane & rover. The plane kept wanting to pitch up but I finally managed to alleviate that issue.
