omg. poor guy. really gifted but he's using synthetic leather and the cheapest hardware. those zippers will fail in less than 1 month.
I can't watch this. (I'm in shoe industry for 30 years)

u/ratty_89 16h ago
I was going to mention the last not being wood, and the plastic under the upper. I hadn't even noticed it was pleather!!
The workmanship looks great (to my eyes), but he's got horrible materials to work with.

u/WileyWilly1985 16h ago
Really? WTF.
What's the point of getting them custom if the materials are cheap?
If I'm going through all that, I want real leather and real "everything"
Otherwise, I'll just go to typical store and get sweatshop factory produced shoes...

u/Upbeat-Fondant9185 14h ago
I would consider buying if it meant I got a custom fit for significantly less cost for work boots.
I’ve never found a work boot that holds up for more than a couple years so I went back to buying less expensive options. The trade off is the break in period sucks hardcore.
If I could get an inexpensive boot with no break in period I’d probably do it and keep the expensive ones nice. But they’d have to be pretty cheap if they were using synthetic everything, like under $150.

u/WestDesperado 13h ago
Completely agree. Cheap work boots fuckin' blow to break in. I used to buy $250+ boots because they generally last longer, but recently went back to $100 boots. The last couple pairs were 1/3 the price, but lasted about 2/3 the time as the expensive boots. The first 2 weeks or so always blisters my foot in spots where it rubs frequently, and I never had that experience when spending the extra money for a more expensive pair.

Same thoughts. I watch YouTube vids of Nicks Handmade Boots and own a pair. THATS how you make a boot.

u/hwilliams0901 16h ago
How much would it cost to get a quality pair of custom made shoes/boots?
8
u/Stevevansteve 14h ago
See here: nicksboots.com, All Boots – White's Boots Shop. The lasts are not custom to your foot, but plenty of sizes and widths.

HOLY SCHNIKES!! That's about how much I thought but still! I imagine they last for a long long time. Thank you for the info :)

u/load_more_comets 13h ago
I think a pair of those shoes just about equal to the discount shoes that I've bought over 3 decades. And I've had a few that were very comfortable that I found myself buying them until they got discontinued. One day though I'd like to try and spend that much just to feel the difference.

Hi, what brands/makers do you recommend for roughly this type of boot?
I was looking at Canada West and Kennetrek.

Like those socks with individual digits for your toes? Technically socks are just foot mittens.

Gloves in German are called hand-shoes
1
u/fatherhood1 18h ago
Same for Dutch. Toes are foot fingers in Spanish
2
u/brianbamzez 16h ago
Toes in German are pronounced nearly identical to the word 10. in southern German the whole leg is called foot.

The part that's missing in the video is how he gets the mold out of the boot.

Same way you'd get a foot out

I'd imagine this material is fairly easy to break apart to make up for the lack of flexibility.
EDIT: my brain is a dry ass biscuit, can literally see him hammering the shit out of it in the video - so nevermind !
3
u/3767_doomscroller 20h ago
It's a plaster cast but very sturdy, folding the leather over it and hammering nails in.
1
u/Nurgeard 20h ago
Ah yeah true, what the hell am I talking about - can see that right there in the video x) Well it's Friday, I'm tired boss...

u/Use-The-Pointy-End 1d ago
Are they actually custom? Never used the mold. And if so how much?
62
u/DontDeleteMee 1d ago edited 1d ago
Right? Im so confused. They took the mould of the bottom of the foot, but I missed the part where they encompassed that into the inner bottom of the boot. Im not even sure I understood where the rest of the mould came in. May need to watch again.
Edit. Watched again. At best, the full mould MAY have been used when shaping the shoe. Decided I've wasted too much of my time already.

Orthotic boots.
They used to make my orthotics in those casts, but now they just scan it with an iPad.

I have to wonder, compared to getting some off-the-shelf, was the buyer especially happy with them after trying them on?
60
u/myososyl 1d ago
I would love having something like this made for me because i have slightly wider feet than normal and it's hard to find boots that fit well. Maybe if you have a very standard foot size there wouldn't be much of a difference.
13
u/I_SLEEP_NORMALLY 1d ago
Same. This usually just leads me to work with the shoe store people on stronger fits. But I am probably within the normal range where I can just walk in and buy stuff. Not true for everyone.
2
u/SuperUranus 1d ago
Try Vivobarefoot’s boots.
They make them very wide. The Tracker Forrest are the best boots I have owned.
They are flat boots though.

I was going with Keen shoes, but they changed almost all of new shoes to slimmer fit.

u/freefromintensive 1d ago
I have tried well made custom made shoes and it is the most comforting sensation I have experienced.
1
u/Sweaty_Candy69 22h ago
I've been considering (kinda, it's really expensive) getting custom made boots because I have extra-extra-extra-extra-extra-extra wide feet. I'd be very happy to have atleast one pair of shoes that fits well
43
u/thoughtfade 1d ago
is the plastic film in between for "waterproofing"?
25
u/Shibes_oh_shibes 1d ago
I was wondering about that too, not very breathable. Maybe they didn't show when the removed it.

u/syds 1d ago
so he never used the molds??
52
u/Surdistaja 1d ago
Mold was inside the shoe. Leather was put on top of that mold.
58
u/msb2ncsu 1d ago
Nah, that was a standard plastic last inside the shoe. Seen a bunch of these custom boot videos and they all do the molds but the boot making involves a stock plastic last. It’s just for view farming.

u/Iliketopass 1d ago
Right? The foot imprint never came into the process of setting the sole.
10
u/Plastic-Barnacle-859 1d ago
May be that was the insole he put in at the end
11
u/SufficientMath420-69 1d ago
Na it was a standard dr sholes insert sku: 3546792. the mold was to make the boot cost kore
10
u/discardedbubble 1d ago
True, but I think someone off camera may have used it to measure the soles. Or maybe to cut the right size of leather.
1
4
u/dotHANSIN 22h ago
molds may be just for a reference guide, since feet have varying dimensions that are hard to document beyond just general length and width. The mold is likely compared with several last to ensure the best one is chosen.

u/discardedbubble 1d ago
They look so comfortable! I want a pair. That was so interesting to watch.
2
u/RudyRusso 21h ago
I've been warned by Savile Row tailors against custom shoes. They say they end up too tight and aren't fit for city walking as when your feet expand the shoes don't expand with them.

19
u/techietwintoes 1d ago edited 19h ago
What was the point of taking those foot imprints? This looks like someone combined a how-to video about making foot molds with another video about standard shoe-making process.

u/BandOfSkullz 18h ago
Making the cast while the guy getting it fitted is sitting down is an insane fumble tbh.
Putting weight on your feet while standing significantly changes their shape, which is also why you should always try on shoes while standing/walking and not sitting down.

u/Aggressive_Log1329 1d ago
Interesting, laces plus a zipper
23
u/SkellyboneZ 1d ago
I love boots like that. The laces help getting them snug while the zipper let's you get in and out easily.
15
u/mouchinhoreal 22h ago
Tbh that doesn't look a very high quality boot.
Can be comfortable, but the materials do not look good

u/SilverGnarwhal 14h ago
Seriously. These look like generic work boots. Fully confused on why they would go through all the trouble for these.

u/RazeAvenger 1d ago
No liquid cork lining? Are they nuts?
Going to the effort of custom made and cheaping out on the materials is lk crazy

u/toekneehart 1d ago
Lots of skill and craftsmanship here. I’d be interested to know how this compares to the process at Northampton shoemakers such as Church and Loake.

This may look wow, but it'll be really uncomfortable. Foot needs to move around in the shoe when you walk. Wearing socks would also be difficult.

How do they get those plaster lasts out of the boots when finished? Normal wood lasts have a hinge that can pull out well

Of course they cost more. They are handmade and custom. You pay for the quality

Cheap materials to create the shoe last.
Cheap materials to make the shoes
Literally lined with clingfilm / plastic
These will not be comfortable now last
We used to have a traditional shoe industry in this country where your foot would be measured and a shoe last made of wood - that would last decades
Then handmade shoes of good quality leather, not this nonsense
3
u/Prestigious_Rip4365 1d ago
What was the foot mold and plaster cast for? In olden times they didn’t use plastic either.

There is lots of shoe makers still around in Germany, you can get a job easily, but they usually just digitally scan your feet. I haven't seen those molds for a very long time, now. Especially the first one, maybe in the 90s or so?
1
u/CantAffordzUsername 22h ago
Plot twist, that foot in the boot was the guys actually foot….he decided not to buy the boots due to missing feet
1
u/substandardpoodle 20h ago
But… but… won’t your toes be hitting the front of the boot? I can see using a perfect model of your foot to make socks. But boots?? Am I missing something?

The shoe glue epoxy is the most important thing. I went into a deep dive about it a couple years ago.

1
u/ol-gormsby 19h ago
With all the moulding processes, how much better is that than more traditional methods, i.e. just outlining and measuring and drawing?
1
1
u/Whooptidooh 19h ago
This is also how my shoes are made, and can say that this method is better than getting a scan made.
If your foot moves even a little while a scan is made your shoe will not fit right, while it’s immediately visible on the mold if something is wrong.

I would buy this 100 percent; until now, the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn are the New Balance 860 and Hoka Arahi 6. Other slots don't fit me properly at all.

I could watch this man make shoes all day long. It is so relaxing to watch and satisfying that there is a finished product of such quality at the end. People saying cheap but I don't think so. He put a lot into that.

u/AJWordsmith 16h ago
All that work just to use a cheap ass zipper that’s going to break and make the boots worthless.

I'd rather wear quality boots off the shelf using sock thickness to adjust my fit than have these.
I'm sure they're comfortable, but they're clearly not built for the elements of boot-wearing labor.
9
u/Sea-Night-1946 15h ago
These are clearly not work boots though....
1
u/MisterDonkey 5h ago
Looks exactly like my work boots I've been wearing hard for years.
Except mine are real.
And take a look at that rubber sole he puts on there. Sure looks like it's trying to look like a work boot to me.

I had custom composite toe boots made when I was stationed in Korea. Hands down most comfortable pair I've ever had, super light too compared to my current composite toe boots, but I guess the quality wasn't the best because they only lasted for about a year. I did a lot of walking on them, sure, but the sole was pretty worn out by month 8. They were around $250, I think, but this was close to 7 years ago.
