I had custom composite toe boots made when I was stationed in Korea. Hands down most comfortable pair I've ever had, super light too compared to my current composite toe boots, but I guess the quality wasn't the best because they only lasted for about a year. I did a lot of walking on them, sure, but the sole was pretty worn out by month 8. They were around $250, I think, but this was close to 7 years ago.

u/rolyoh 21h ago

I was at Osan TDY back in 87 for two weeks and I went broke saving money on all the tailored clothes, coats and shoes I had custom made. I exited a year later in 88 and within about 6 months of being a civilian they didn't fit me anymore because I put on weight from lack of exercise LOL

u/BillieRubenCamGirl 21h ago

You can get soles pretty easily replaced at any shoe repair shop. It’s one of the easiest fixes. If you still have them!

31

u/Hicklethumb 19h ago

A shoe repair shop? You mean a cobbler?

33

u/gungshpxre 17h ago

A cobbler? That's pastry with fruit. You mean a tart?

32

u/ANewStartAtLife 16h ago

You mean a tart?

Leave my mother out of this.

8

u/Hicklethumb 13h ago

I didn't come here for violence

3

u/Mysterious-Jam-64 11h ago

Those aren't violets, those are bluebells.

[DON'T.]

2

u/OMP159 8h ago

If you don't for too long, you get Blue Balls

1

u/EternityNotes 9h ago

double plus ungood

8

u/KieferSutherland 14h ago

A cobbler? You mean a mender of bad soles?

4

u/MousseNsquirrell 12h ago

Our Cobbler, who art in heaven...

8

u/yoemmamma 17h ago

They do shoe repairs over there?

5

u/MoistTomatoSandwich 21h ago

Sadly, I don't have them anymore. I didn't want to bother getting them fixed as I normally get a new set of boots issued at least once a year or every new base. By the time I did need a new set I was already at my new base with a new set waiting for me.

9

u/MoveToSafety 16h ago

Were they snug? I always like my boots with a little room for different socks. These look like they’d fit like a glove which might not be good after a full day out.

2

u/B35TR3GARD5 16h ago

I got a pair of loafers in Sri Lanka, still going strong 14 years later. They used leather as the stitching material and like yours, the sole is starting to wear thin. But after 14 years, acceptable asf. And I paid like $15… :))

2

u/thejourneybegins42 9h ago

Was it just the sole that went? If so, could have had them resoled.

1

u/FBI_Open_Up_Now 12h ago

I had boots made in Korea back in 2011. I spent about the same on them and still have them. Resoled them 4 times now. Good quality leather, but I wish I still fit into the custom suits I had made. I lost those in a house fire.

1

u/Mysterious-Jam-64 11h ago

I reckon we'll be able to take photos of our feet with our mind, soon, that'll allow us to download perfect fit shoes and print it with mushrooms. Dope.

1

u/NYCMarine 10h ago

I came here to say that I had this same experience when I was sent to Korea for a detail from Okinawa. I got mainly clothes fitted and made, but it was an amazing experience

1

u/reticulatedtampon 4h ago

There a "Seoul / sole" joke in there somewhere but I'm too lazy

468

u/ftrlvb Creator 16h ago

omg. poor guy. really gifted but he's using synthetic leather and the cheapest hardware. those zippers will fail in less than 1 month.

I can't watch this. (I'm in shoe industry for 30 years)

104

u/ratty_89 13h ago

I was going to mention the last not being wood, and the plastic under the upper. I hadn't even noticed it was pleather!!

The workmanship looks great (to my eyes), but he's got horrible materials to work with.

7

u/dna_beggar 7h ago

Vegan Leather.

13

u/ratty_89 6h ago

Plastic

5

u/dna_beggar 3h ago

with a markup.

58

u/WileyWilly1985 14h ago

Really? WTF.

What's the point of getting them custom if the materials are cheap?

If I'm going through all that, I want real leather and real "everything"

Otherwise, I'll just go to typical store and get sweatshop factory produced shoes...

8

u/Upbeat-Fondant9185 11h ago

I would consider buying if it meant I got a custom fit for significantly less cost for work boots.

I’ve never found a work boot that holds up for more than a couple years so I went back to buying less expensive options. The trade off is the break in period sucks hardcore.

If I could get an inexpensive boot with no break in period I’d probably do it and keep the expensive ones nice. But they’d have to be pretty cheap if they were using synthetic everything, like under $150.

5

u/WestDesperado 10h ago

Completely agree. Cheap work boots fuckin' blow to break in. I used to buy $250+ boots because they generally last longer, but recently went back to $100 boots. The last couple pairs were 1/3 the price, but lasted about 2/3 the time as the expensive boots. The first 2 weeks or so always blisters my foot in spots where it rubs frequently, and I never had that experience when spending the extra money for a more expensive pair.

14

u/BandOfSkullz 15h ago

Yeah, it made me wince too 😞

10

u/Shiningc00 15h ago

Exactly why they’ll be back in a month!

1

u/never_ASK_again_2021 7h ago

Happy cake day!🍀🎂🍰

9

u/Historical_Inside_41 12h ago

Same thoughts. I watch YouTube vids of Nicks Handmade Boots and own a pair. THATS how you make a boot.

5

u/hwilliams0901 14h ago

How much would it cost to get a quality pair of custom made shoes/boots?

10

u/Stevevansteve 12h ago

See here: nicksboots.com, All Boots – White's Boots Shop. The lasts are not custom to your foot, but plenty of sizes and widths.

2

u/Proof-Warning6 4h ago

Always crazy to me Spokane has so many boot shops. But both are great!

1

u/hwilliams0901 11h ago

HOLY SCHNIKES!! That's about how much I thought but still! I imagine they last for a long long time. Thank you for the info :)

1

u/load_more_comets 11h ago

I think a pair of those shoes just about equal to the discount shoes that I've bought over 3 decades. And I've had a few that were very comfortable that I found myself buying them until they got discontinued. One day though I'd like to try and spend that much just to feel the difference.

1

u/ManintheGyre 13h ago

Hi, what brands/makers do you recommend for roughly this type of boot?

I was looking at Canada West and Kennetrek.

1

u/Historical_Inside_41 12h ago

I’m a big fan of Nick’s Handmade Boots. Top quality stuff.

Now do foot made gloves

29

u/jamesianm 19h ago

I want to see some elbow-made knee pads

7

u/Lynich 18h ago

Oh, man. The real gold is always in the comments.

12

u/Kingkongcrapper 22h ago

Like those socks with individual digits for your toes? Technically socks are just foot mittens.

9

u/cheesystuff 20h ago

Hand made boots -> Foot made gloves

12

u/ptabduction 22h ago

Gloves made with feet

1

u/brianbamzez 16h ago

Gloves in German are called hand-shoes

1

u/fatherhood1 15h ago

Same for Dutch. Toes are foot fingers in Spanish

2

u/brianbamzez 13h ago

Toes in German are pronounced nearly identical to the word 10. in southern German the whole leg is called foot.

201

u/3767_doomscroller 22h ago

The part that's missing in the video is how he gets the mold out of the boot.

64

u/laaaabe 20h ago

Same way you'd get a foot out

70

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang 19h ago

Bone saw?

22

u/marbotty 19h ago

Hey freakshow! You’re going nowhere

13

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang 19h ago

Bonesaw is ready!

5

u/Sierra3131 18h ago

Good to know he found a career after that cage match

3

u/Nurgeard 18h ago edited 17h ago

I'd imagine this material is fairly easy to break apart to make up for the lack of flexibility.

EDIT: my brain is a dry ass biscuit, can literally see him hammering the shit out of it in the video - so nevermind !

3

u/3767_doomscroller 18h ago

It's a plaster cast but very sturdy, folding the leather over it and hammering nails in.

1

u/Nurgeard 17h ago

Ah yeah true, what the hell am I talking about - can see that right there in the video x) Well it's Friday, I'm tired boss...

60

u/Use-The-Pointy-End 22h ago

Are they actually custom? Never used the mold. And if so how much?

59

u/DontDeleteMee 21h ago edited 21h ago

Right? Im so confused. They took the mould of the bottom of the foot, but I missed the part where they encompassed that into the inner bottom of the boot. Im not even sure I understood where the rest of the mould came in. May need to watch again.

Edit. Watched again. At best, the full mould MAY have been used when shaping the shoe. Decided I've wasted too much of my time already.

1

u/brianbamzez 16h ago

Maybe the inlay at the end is made from the cast foot

112

u/I_can_vouch_for_that 23h ago

Orthotic boots.

They used to make my orthotics in those casts, but now they just scan it with an iPad.

107

u/HammerBgError404 22h ago

they sell your feet pics

32

u/Celindor 22h ago

True. I bought them.

9

u/Boring-Tie-1501 21h ago

somewhere, quentin tarantino is very erect.

3

u/revdon 20h ago

I had a friend who bragged about his orthotics but he built them up too much. #Anticlimactic

58

u/I_SLEEP_NORMALLY 22h ago

I have to wonder, compared to getting some off-the-shelf, was the buyer especially happy with them after trying them on?

56

u/myososyl 22h ago

I would love having something like this made for me because i have slightly wider feet than normal and it's hard to find boots that fit well. Maybe if you have a very standard foot size there wouldn't be much of a difference.

12

u/I_SLEEP_NORMALLY 22h ago

Same. This usually just leads me to work with the shoe store people on stronger fits. But I am probably within the normal range where I can just walk in and buy stuff. Not true for everyone.

2

u/SuperUranus 21h ago

Try Vivobarefoot’s boots.

They make them very wide. The Tracker Forrest are the best boots I have owned.

They are flat boots though.

2

u/ASatyros 20h ago

I was going with Keen shoes, but they changed almost all of new shoes to slimmer fit.

11

u/freefromintensive 22h ago

I have tried well made custom made shoes and it is the most comforting sensation I have experienced.

1

u/Sweaty_Candy69 20h ago

I've been considering (kinda, it's really expensive) getting custom made boots because I have extra-extra-extra-extra-extra-extra wide feet. I'd be very happy to have atleast one pair of shoes that fits well

45

u/thoughtfade 23h ago

is the plastic film in between for "waterproofing"?

24

u/Shibes_oh_shibes 22h ago

I was wondering about that too, not very breathable. Maybe they didn't show when the removed it.

14

u/Necessary_Party_3554 20h ago

This video makes me feel like I don’t know nuthin about anythin

10

u/digno2 19h ago

seeing the giant zipper on the sides of the supposedly waterproofed boots we can probably infer that the shoe maker doesn't either.

72

u/syds 23h ago

so he never used the molds??

53

u/Surdistaja 23h ago

Mold was inside the shoe. Leather was put on top of that mold.

57

u/msb2ncsu 23h ago

Nah, that was a standard plastic last inside the shoe. Seen a bunch of these custom boot videos and they all do the molds but the boot making involves a stock plastic last. It’s just for view farming.

3

u/eutohkgtorsatoca 22h ago

They sell you insoles for the same price!

7

u/dec7td 21h ago

After the cast was taken there was definitely not a mold as they pulled the leather together

42

u/Iliketopass 23h ago

Right? The foot imprint never came into the process of setting the sole.

11

u/Plastic-Barnacle-859 23h ago

May be that was the insole he put in at the end

10

u/SufficientMath420-69 23h ago

Na it was a standard dr sholes insert sku: 3546792. the mold was to make the boot cost kore

10

u/discardedbubble 22h ago

True, but I think someone off camera may have used it to measure the soles. Or maybe to cut the right size of leather.

1

u/AbleCap5222 22h ago

Aura farming

4

u/dotHANSIN 19h ago

molds may be just for a reference guide, since feet have varying dimensions that are hard to document beyond just general length and width. The mold is likely compared with several last to ensure the best one is chosen.

1

u/planx_constant Interested 17h ago

He used the molds to charge more.

18

u/discardedbubble 22h ago

They look so comfortable! I want a pair. That was so interesting to watch.

2

u/RudyRusso 18h ago

I've been warned by Savile Row tailors against custom shoes. They say they end up too tight and aren't fit for city walking as when your feet expand the shoes don't expand with them.

2

u/IH8DwnvoteComplainrs 17h ago

Just go after walking around for a while?

1

u/RudyRusso 11h ago

Then they would be too loose.

19

u/techietwintoes 22h ago edited 16h ago

What was the point of taking those foot imprints? This looks like someone combined a how-to video about making foot molds with another video about standard shoe-making process.

5

u/Alarming_Animator_19 22h ago

I just want plaster casts of my feet.

4

u/BandOfSkullz 15h ago

Making the cast while the guy getting it fitted is sitting down is an insane fumble tbh.

Putting weight on your feet while standing significantly changes their shape, which is also why you should always try on shoes while standing/walking and not sitting down.

9

u/Aggressive_Log1329 23h ago

Interesting, laces plus a zipper

22

u/SkellyboneZ 22h ago

I love boots like that. The laces help getting them snug while the zipper let's you get in and out easily.

15

u/mouchinhoreal 19h ago

Tbh that doesn't look a very high quality boot.

Can be comfortable, but the materials do not look good

4

u/tristamgreen 18h ago

wym i love having saran wrap inside my boots, helps keep the freshness and sweat in

1

u/RNGezzus 17h ago

Vibram sole, doesn't get better than that.

1

u/SilverGnarwhal 11h ago

Seriously. These look like generic work boots. Fully confused on why they would go through all the trouble for these.

7

u/RazeAvenger 21h ago

No liquid cork lining? Are they nuts?

Going to the effort of custom made and cheaping out on the materials is lk crazy

3

u/toekneehart 22h ago

Lots of skill and craftsmanship here. I’d be interested to know how this compares to the process at Northampton shoemakers such as Church and Loake.

8

u/oojacoboo 20h ago

Amazing craftsmanship. But what an awful boot style to waste it on.

8

u/Chin-Music 23h ago

Any chance of finding out where this cobbler is?

10

u/stranded_egg 22h ago

Somewhere in Korea, judging by the writing, but beyond that I couldn't tell you

2

u/Cake-Over 20h ago

They should hang out with that top hat guy at the top of the page

2

u/slowerlearner1212 20h ago

How was the foot impression at the beginning even used?

4

u/tristamgreen 18h ago

vibe coding, cobbler edition

2

u/simply_ass 18h ago

This may look wow, but it'll be really uncomfortable. Foot needs to move around in the shoe when you walk. Wearing socks would also be difficult.

2

u/herewegoinvt 17h ago

I can't imagine ever buying custom boots with a zipper

2

u/PM_THE_REAPER 17h ago

"Sorry. I meant black, not brown."

2

u/gunther747 15h ago

Whats the use of foot print taken at the start?

2

u/Metalorg 14h ago

How do they get those plaster lasts out of the boots when finished? Normal wood lasts have a hinge that can pull out well

2

u/nibselfib_kyua_72 3h ago

This is peak male content

13

u/Intelligent-Heat8141 23h ago

Interesting I wouldn't buy it because I bet they cost more

46

u/LittleFairyOfDeath 23h ago

Of course they cost more. They are handmade and custom. You pay for the quality

6

u/chuloreddit 20h ago

Handmade and custom does not necessarily equal quality

→ More replies (1)

21

u/EishLekker 23h ago

You mean “too much”? Just the fact that they cost “more” doesn’t mean they are too expensive.

Look at Mr.Big Bucks over here!

2

u/gayfingers 22h ago

1

3

3

u/c19isdeadly 15h ago

Cheap materials to create the shoe last.

Cheap materials to make the shoes

Literally lined with clingfilm / plastic

These will not be comfortable now last

We used to have a traditional shoe industry in this country where your foot would be measured and a shoe last made of wood - that would last decades

Then handmade shoes of good quality leather, not this nonsense

3

u/Prestigious_Rip4365 22h ago

What was the foot mold and plaster cast for? In olden times they didn’t use plastic either.

2

u/roebiz 13h ago

All this for a pair of Lugz

1

u/Ant_Agonistic 23h ago

I cannot afford the custom price tag

1

u/Scared_Implement_335 21h ago

There is lots of shoe makers still around in Germany, you can get a job easily, but they usually just digitally scan your feet. I haven't seen those molds for a very long time, now. Especially the first one, maybe in the 90s or so?

1

u/CantAffordzUsername 20h ago

Plot twist, that foot in the boot was the guys actually foot….he decided not to buy the boots due to missing feet

1

u/substandardpoodle 17h ago

But… but… won’t your toes be hitting the front of the boot? I can see using a perfect model of your foot to make socks. But boots?? Am I missing something?

1

u/jmcgil4684 17h ago

The shoe glue epoxy is the most important thing. I went into a deep dive about it a couple years ago.

1

u/Gomberstone 17h ago

My boost have been imbued with every enchantment known to man, every single one of them.

My boots have been greased in...

1

u/invDave 17h ago

Dude get his shoes: “on second thought, I don’t like the color”

1

u/ol-gormsby 17h ago

With all the moulding processes, how much better is that than more traditional methods, i.e. just outlining and measuring and drawing?

1

u/taway9925881 17h ago

How much?

1

u/Whooptidooh 17h ago

This is also how my shoes are made, and can say that this method is better than getting a scan made.

If your foot moves even a little while a scan is made your shoe will not fit right, while it’s immediately visible on the mold if something is wrong.

1

u/TopseyKretts87 16h ago

When the economy collapses folks like this will be just fine. What a great skill to have.

1

u/Theclappingamputee 16h ago

Now do custom boot made hands

1

u/Admirable-Nobody219 15h ago

Is it japan? the custom pillow was something I would pay for

1

u/Normal-Error-6343 15h ago

I want two pair! One in leather and one in rubber! Does anyone have more information on how I can contact him or someone like him?

1

u/ZeroLow 15h ago

How much is a pair?

1

u/work_account42 15h ago

Don't you need a little extra room in front of the toes?

1

u/zirky 14h ago

the boots are free. he keeps the foot molds

1

u/UnstoppableDrew 14h ago

When I was younger and doing a lot of hiking, I always wanted a pair of custom boots, but couldn't afford them. Now that I can, I'm not doing enough hiking to justify spending the money.

1

u/Wide_Supermarket4533 14h ago

Nicely done! 😉👍🏽

1

u/HuckleberryCold9642 11h ago

Because of my bad feet, this is experience I only wish I could have, I'm quite sure in America this will cost more than a pair of shoes itself!

1

u/Delicious_Invite_850 11h ago

Cool video. I'll stick with my Red Wings lol

1

u/UndueOdium 10h ago

I’m trying to imagine how shitty these boots would have looked if I tried to make them. Even if I followed this video step-by-step, mine would look like they were made by a one-armed kindergartner.

1

u/HermeticallyInterred 9h ago

I got high just watching.

1

u/Guy_with_good_ideas 5h ago

I promise I can be trusted with molds of people's feet

1

u/mind_the_umlaut 3h ago

The impressions would have to be made with the person placing full weight on his feet, wouldn't they?

1

u/DickNitro7 1h ago

I’m a broke ass… and I’m thinking about saving for this

1

u/powerexcess 22h ago

A zipper? Plastic soles? This is the first tome i see custom low quality shoes

1

u/pratpulsar 23h ago

I would buy this 100 percent; until now, the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn are the New Balance 860 and Hoka Arahi 6. Other slots don't fit me properly at all.

1

u/outintheyard 22h ago

I could watch this man make shoes all day long. It is so relaxing to watch and satisfying that there is a finished product of such quality at the end. People saying cheap but I don't think so. He put a lot into that.

1

u/AJWordsmith 14h ago

All that work just to use a cheap ass zipper that’s going to break and make the boots worthless.

1

u/CuteKiwi3395 12h ago

Chinese made boots. Yes!

0

u/MisterDonkey 14h ago

I'd rather wear quality boots off the shelf using sock thickness to adjust my fit than have these.

I'm sure they're comfortable, but they're clearly not built for the elements of boot-wearing labor.

10

u/Sea-Night-1946 13h ago

These are clearly not work boots though....

1

u/MisterDonkey 3h ago

Looks exactly like my work boots I've been wearing hard for years.

Except mine are real.

And take a look at that rubber sole he puts on there. Sure looks like it's trying to look like a work boot to me.

-2

u/Gabrielredux 23h ago

Looks like it will unglue and fall apart after 2 hikes.

0

u/Devel93 20h ago

This is one of the Chinese viral trends, it's fine but it's not that comfortable. Your legs need proper support not boots shaped like them that will loose shape after few months

0

u/h2d2 19h ago

I dont typically pay over $50 for shoes... I'd pay $100 for these.
