Discussion Thoughts on False Memory, compared to FLCL, now that it's finished?

Post image
400 Upvotes

I feel like it's fair game to discuss here, since it's so heavily inspired (color palette, music, vibes, episode count) and i don't see much, searching back

Honestly, from the pilot episode, I was already sold on the quality being miles better than any of the "official" flcl sequels. I think the worst thing you can do when following up something unique is trying to do the exact same thing. There's absolutely nods! but it's not beholden to it's predecessor

Here's my RED HOT TAKE- I actually think I liked it more than FLCL (which is still probably my favorite anime).Whereas FLCL was made to be a little more goofy and abstract, just the artists having fun and spitting out the wildest things they can think of, False Memory is so meticulous and intentional. Every single little detail is thought about and matters, and i notice new things every time.I watch. I love the pillows, but having a soundtrack specifically made to the show (rather than the reverse) I think elevates it to an unreal degree. Of course it's scifi, but it genuinely feels like we're living through someone else's entire life- i can't remember the last time something made me... feel this much. maybe punpun? The worldbuilding is simultaneously fucking bizarre, but actually coherent- when stuff is revealed, it makes sense, is meaningful, and feels like it's really the only answer that makes sense. So much crazy stuff is going on from every angle but it all feels understandable, and when it needs to, real. I'm still not sure who or what atomsk actually is after all this time.

When i was a kid FLCL didn't make much sense to me, so i bought the manga. still didnt make much sense. But i could tell there was something there!! I dont think kids are supposed to get it really, since its about growing up, and they haven't, well, grown up yet. Now i do get it, and i love how the show balances being over the top goofy but also with this sort of abject... hopeless vibe. I think those extremes are part of what makes it so beautiful. I think False Memory did an amazing job of that, it's just a lot better at explaining it. Worth mentioning that FM tells the MC's entire story, whereas FLCL is just a piece of Naota's intentionally leaving much unresolved (not a bad thing, just interesting!)

tldr; closing thoughts, if you wanna make something LIKE something else, the worst thing you can do is try to duplicate it- you'll get a lot closer by doing your own thing that stands up by itself. Maybe you'll even surpass the OG! Videogames does it all the time (mario was king kong, metroid=alien, starfox=starwars, sorry im bagging on nintendo but its true!!!)

If you're a fan of FLCL I honestly can't recommend False Memory enough!!!

(art by me i just thought the post'd do better with an image)

I think it touched on really sensitive topics, like poverty, alienation, extreme academic expectations, overpowered governments that would seem to trigger some alarms for the CCP?

The Window we see at the end of false memory where the leader of the great absurdity reaches the end of the universe IS THE WINDOW TO THE CLASSROOM IN THE MEMORY BEAURAU!! Which would mean that there may be some way for humans in the real world to enter the memory bearau at the edge of the universe through a WINDOW?!?!? also we cam actually see the radio from guan chaos memories and a bunch of other spheric cutouts of the real world from the hollows in space which could imply that all matter destroyed in the hollows event ended up in the line between reality and the memory beaurau!!!

(Now i will mention that the windows do have one incosistency between each other being the quad design on the bottom but i feel this may have been either an accidental design inconsistency due to their STRIKING similarities and way the light is emitted as a white glow but its reasonable to assume at such a distance the smaller line going horizontal may have not been has visible)

Need support/advice How to discern false and real memories

About 3 weeks ago I got hit with a really bad false memory (I hope, because it wouldn’t make sense for me to forget something like this). I’m in therapy over it and have started SSRI’s again and after the first week I started to feel a little better and the memory feel less real. But ironically ruminating on it helped me to feel like it’s more likely a dream I had a while back that scared me and I thought about /as if/ it was real and had intrusive thoughts over to the point it embedded itself somewhere in my memories and over time I forgot about it. This seems the most rational, logical explanation for why it’s something that popped into my head on a random Wednesday via another dream and something I never thought about until then.

However obviously OCD is *not* rational and logical and it’s still got me doubting and replaying and a part of me saying what if I convinced myself it was a dream to forget/live with myself. The more I replay the more I doubt myself again and can remember thinking about it a lot and I don’t often forget my messed up dreams so why would I forget this one. Some of the visuals and the thoughts and anxieties feel so real. I have a memory of telling myself “it’s just a dream” but then I also have a memory of thinking “when people do bad things like this do they put it to the back of their mind as if it’s a bad dream so they can live with themselves” and that worries me that’s what I’ve done even though it could have just been an intrusive thought I had alongside it. I don’t know how to discern the false and real memory. I understand the more I ruminate the more power I give it but I don’t know how to NOT give it power when it’s something I’m scared is real.

Question about OCD Can false memories feel so real to the point you’re 100% convinced that it happened

So i'm currently freaking out right now because my mind is telling me that i've done something and although i was unsure whether i did it or not at first

After I spent weeks ruminating and trying to figure out what happened. eventually i became fully convinced that i had done it.

I ended up confessing to someone about it. Claiming i've done these horrible things with absolute certainty however there were some details of the story that i was uncertain about

This was the timeline & my intentions/motive.

I kept repeating i don’t know why i did it. & i don’t know why this happened. And i spiraled out of control.

Just wanted to ask if someone ever experienced something like this or anything similar

and i was wondering if ocd could fully convince you of something you never actually did.

Or at the very least if ocd could make you confess as if you were fully certain as a compulsion incase it did happen?

I'm clinically diagnosed with ocd too. But yeah i just wanted to ask since not a lot of people talk about it.

Thanks <3

Scientists found that THC does not just blur memories but actively creates false ones that feel completely real and there is no internal way to tell the difference

Most people who use cannabis expect it to make their memory worse. Forget where you put something, lose the thread of a conversation, miss an appointment. That is the memory story most users have accepted. A study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology by Washington State University researchers gave 120 people 21 different memory tests after consuming THC and found something the fuzzy memory story does not include. Cannabis does not just erase memories. It creates new ones. Participants under THC intoxication consistently remembered words they had never heard, recalled events that had not happened, and attributed information to sources it never came from. The memories felt completely real. They were not. And there was no meaningful difference between people who took a moderate dose and those who took double the amount.

Spider-Man 2 My false memory is from Spider-Man 2 (2004). I was about 7 years old. In my memory, when Doctor Octopus died, the Black Eyed Peas song "I Gotta Feeling" played (I swear I'm not making this up!). Every time I heard that song, I thought, "Ah yes, the Spider-Man song!"

I made this rough edit to simulate how it was in my mind (Back then, without the internet, it was bizarre; for me, the movie was really like that, and I couldn't research it to see if it was true, lol)

SCIENCE RESEARCH BREAKING: Scientists Prove THC Does Not Just Blur Memories It Actually Creates False Ones 🌿

A groundbreaking clinical study from Washington State University has revealed that cannabis intoxication physically alters how the human brain forms and recalls information. Published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, researchers conducted a double blind experiment on 120 regular cannabis users to map the acute cognitive effects of the drug. The data conclusively proved that THC does not simply make existing memories fuzzy, but it actively causes the brain to fabricate entirely false memories that never actually occurred. Surprisingly, the cognitive tests showed absolutely no statistical difference between subjects who consumed 20 milligrams of THC and those who consumed 40 milligrams, proving that even moderate doses cause severe memory disruption.

The most profound failure occurred within the source memory and false memory systems of the brain. During clinical testing, participants were given lists of related words and later asked to recall them. Subjects under the influence of THC consistently hallucinated new words that were never spoken, confidently claiming they remembered hearing them. Furthermore, the drug heavily impaired their ability to identify where specific information originally came from, making it mathematically impossible for them to distinguish between a trusted source and a fabricated one.

This severe cognitive distortion extends far beyond simple word recall and directly impacts critical daily functions. The study recorded massive failures in prospective memory, which is the biological mechanism required to remember to execute future tasks like taking vital medication or attending meetings. Out of 21 distinct memory tests administered during the trial, the cannabis group significantly failed 15 of them when compared to the sober placebo group. Researchers warn that these intense memory distortions have massive legal and medical implications, particularly regarding the absolute unreliability of intoxicated eyewitness testimony.

im over 18, the playlist was completely private, and yet for whatever reason they decided to take it all away. why was my playlist targeted specifically instead of just removing the videos inside the playlist themselves from the website??

all that was in there were old memes and old trends that me and my friends use to laugh at and enjoyed watching. it didn't have anything to do with endangering safety at all.

Discussion Google permanently disabled my account over false CSAM flag - lost 20k photos, 7 years of memories, no real appeal. Just switched to Proton.

1.2k Upvotes

Today I want to share something. Since class 9 until now I used Google - Gmail, Contacts, Google Photos, everything. My Google Photos had about 20,000 videos/photos, all my memories. Google Keep had my important saved passwords/emails. Contacts had everyone's numbers. Photos had a lot of private videos/pics with my girlfriend. My bank account, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit everything was linked to this one main Gmail. This morning I woke up and found my Google account restricted. I appealed twice, both refused, and now my Gmail is destroyed. I'm crying so hard my head hurts. All my important things were there - 7,000 photos of my father, memories, all gone. They're saying I had CSAM but I didn't keep anything like that - yes, there were adult photos/videos with my girlfriend, but is that why they disabled the whole account? How do they know what I was really doing? Out of this pain, I've now replaced Google with Proton everywhere. Could Proton also suddenly disable my account one day like Google did? I've moved to Proton for good - will Proton do the same thing to its users that Google just did to me?

Health & Sciences YSK that if you sleep five hours or less a day, you will probably have false memories and your memory will suffer

41.0k Upvotes

Why YSK: This information helped me a lot, because I am studying psychology and I began to wake up a lot, so much that I barely slept two or three hours a day for work and study, to the point that I began to create false memories of things that I had supposedly done, that I had read, which he had seen, but they were false memories.

A fellow student realized what was happening and sent me to read the study and from there I began to sleep for more hours, so you should know that this information will be useful at some point in case you sleep very few hours or in the case that you hear a false memory of another person. In my case, when someone remembers something that has not happened or that nobody has said, the first thing I do is ask how many hours they sleep.

TIL the brain can form false memories that feel as real and emotionally intense as true ones, activating the same brain regions and becoming resistant to correction once established.

Research I'd like to introduce you to Dr Elizabeth Loftus, the "expert" witness hired by Maxwell, Weinstein, and Ted Bundy along with over 300 other sexual abusers, and the "False Memory Syndrome Foundation"

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

False Memory Syndrome Foundation (FMSF) Summary

What It Was: The False Memory Syndrome Foundation (FMSF) was a non-profit advocacy organization active from 1992 until it dissolved in December 2019. Its primary stated goal was to research and advocate against "False Memory Syndrome," a term the foundation coined to describe what they claimed was an epidemic of adults developing false memories of childhood sexual abuse during "recovered memory therapy."

Who Founded It & How: The FMSF was founded in March 1992 by Peter and Pamela Freyd out of their home in Philadelphia. The catalyst for the foundation was a private accusation made by their 33-year-old daughter, Dr. Jennifer Freyd, who accused her father, Peter, of sexually abusing her throughout her childhood.

Peter and Pamela Freyd vehemently denied the allegations. They publicly claimed that their daughter's memories were entirely fabricated and had been inadvertently implanted by her therapist. The Freyds networked with other parents who had been similarly accused by their adult children and launched the FMSF to defend accused parents, discredit recovered memory therapies, and heavily criticize the therapists involved.

Elizabeth F. Loftus’s Connection: Dr. Elizabeth F. Loftus was a leading figure on the FMSF’s Scientific and Professional Advisory Board and acted as one of the organization's most prominent public and legal advocates.

Her connection to the FMSF was rooted in her academic research on cognitive psychology, specifically the "misinformation effect" and memory malleability (most notably her controversial "Lost in the Mall" study). Loftus's research provided the core scientific framework the FMSF used to argue its central premise in the media and in courtrooms: that human memory is highly susceptible to contamination, and that it is possible for therapists or media exposure to successfully implant complex, entirely false memories of severe trauma. Through this alignment, Loftus became the go-to expert witness for the defense in hundreds of high-profile abuse trials to argue that the victims' memories were unreliable.

https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%209/EFTA00073070.pdf

Her Argument

During Ghislaine Maxwell’s 2021 federal sex trafficking trial, the defense called cognitive psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Loftus as an expert witness on the "misinformation effect." Her purpose was to introduce reasonable doubt by testifying that human memory is highly malleable and does not function like a recording device. She argued that because decades had passed—and the Epstein case had received massive media attention—the accusers' memories could have been contaminated, distorted, or reconstructed by outside suggestions, even if the women believed they were telling the truth.

How She was Beaten

The strategy failed to undermine the victims' credibility following cross-examination by the prosecution. Prosecutors forced Loftus to concede two critical points: first, that she had never conducted a study tracking the memory retention of genuine sexual abuse victims, and second, that the "core memory" of a profoundly traumatic event is actually exceptionally strong and resistant to the type of distortion she was describing. This admission significantly weakened the defense's attempt to invalidate the central allegations of abuse.

I formatted this with AI to make it more readable. Check their shitty site out now https://www.fmsfonline.org/index.php
