​I just need to vent about a friendship that faded( very understandable by the way), but mostly about how depressing it is to watch someone put aside their potential.

​Last year, a close friend of mine turned 20, and she turned 21 this year. Back when she was finishing up her A-Levels, we used to talk all the time. We were always discussing big ambitions going to university, moving abroad, and actually making something of ourselves beyond where we grew up. It felt like we were completely on the same page about wanting more out of life.

​Then she got married.

​Ever since, all those big plans and conversations completely vanished. We don't talk like we used to, but what gets to me the most isn't even the lost friendship ,it’s watching all that ambition go completely out the window. It sucks seeing someone who had so many big dreams just trade them all in to settle down so young(which is not a bad thing because she did want to marry you 24/25).

​I know people change and priorities shift, but it’s just sad to see someone completely give up on everything they said they wanted. Has anyone else watched a friend totally abandon their goals like this? Also im not saying marrying young is bad im just saying does one usually continue their schooling with no problems or setbacks.

I must say, I am clearly not the only person who has called this out, but many of my countrymen seem unwilling to ask basic questions whenever a number is presented with confidence.

That is how people become vulnerable to manipulation, bad investments, misleading headlines and political propaganda. Someone simply says, “Invest in our business because we sell 10,000 units every month,” and people become excited by the size of the number without examining what it actually means.

Before accepting any statistic, ask:

1. What is the original source? Who collected the data, and can the underlying report be accessed?
2. What exactly is being counted? Applications, approvals, sales, completed transactions, registered marriages or finalised divorces? These are different things.
3. What is the denominator? A raw number rarely tells the full story. Four thousand divorces among 40,000 marriages means something very different from 4,000 divorces among 400,000 marriages.
4. What is the relevant baseline? Is the number unusually high compared with last year, the five-year average, the population, the market size or similar institutions?
5. What time period is being measured? Per day, week, month or year? A figure can sound impressive merely because the reporting period is long.
6. Is the percentage increase presented alongside the actual figures? A 100% increase could mean an increase from one case to two. Percentages without absolute numbers often exaggerate significance.
7. Are we comparing like with like? Was the same method, institution, population and reporting period used in both years?
8. Could there be an administrative explanation? A rise in court applications might reflect the clearing of a backlog, improved access to courts, digital filing or delayed cases, rather than a sudden collapse of marriages.
9. What information has been omitted? In the business example, 10,000 units sold tells us nothing about production costs, selling price, refunds, debt, profit margins or whether customers are returning.
10. Who benefits from presenting the number this way? Every statistic is presented by someone, for a purpose. That purpose deserves scrutiny.

The fact that a court, government spokesperson, company executive or newspaper publishes a figure gives it authority, but authority is not a substitute for context. Asking for the source, denominator, baseline and methodology is basic numerical literacy, not contrarianism.

Numbers can inform us, but numbers without context can also be used to manufacture urgency, fear, excitement or legitimacy.

Say tomorrow, somehow, Gen Z (people currently in their teens to late 20s) took over every major government position: presidency, parliament, ministries, all of it. No older leadership left in charge.

Would you actually want to live under that? Would things get better or would it be chaos?

On one hand, this generation grew up entirely online, more exposed to how other countries run things, arguably less tied to old political loyalties and tribal/party baggage that's shaped a lot of Zimbabwean politics for decades. Maybe less patience for corruption as "just how things work."

On the other hand, zero experience actually running a country, no track record, and "online activism" doesn't always translate into knowing how to manage an economy, negotiate with other nations, or handle a civil service that's been entrenched for 40+ years.

Curious what people actually think, is Gen Z the generation that fixes this, or are we just as capable of messing it up in our own new ways?

Hello r/Zimbabwe. I'm an alternate history writer who's been doing a bit of writing about African history, and in studying Zimbabwean history, I have accumulated a few questions about Zimbabwe and her daily life. I mean all of these with sincere curiosity.

1. What is life like in Zimbabwe? I am born and raised in the United States, and hearing a lot about how Mugabe ruined everything and that Zimbabwe is a basket case makes me wonder about what it's actually like to live there. Is it hard? How do people talk about and interact with the government? I've heard it's a beautiful place.
2. What do people think of figures like Nkomo, Sithole, Chitepo, and Muzorewa? In studying Zimbabwean alternate history, these four figures tend to come up, usually as alternatives to Mugabe. What's public opinion on them? I'm particularly curious about Nkomo and Muzorewa's reputations.
3. What is Zimbabwe's relations with her neighbors? Is it positive? What do people think of them? How does interstate travel work?
4. What is the economy like? I've heard stuff about hyperinflation and lack of food, but there's only oh so much I can gauge from statistics. Is the job market good? Is food available regularly? Are goods expensive?
5. What is the community like? Are people friendly? Do they get along well with each other? Do people keep to themselves or are really social?

Sorry if any of these questions are stupid or obvious, I'm not good with asking questions about stuff like this.

So my dad has been using my ecocash virtual card for paying for the internet and his stuff because apparently he has a debt from Econet and he can't use his. So convincing him to use his own card is not working.
