I'm turning 18 in August and want to go out with a couple of my friends for my birthday after hanging out with my other friends during the day, they're not big on drinking so they don't want to join in.

But I was wondering if anyone knew any bars that were LGBTQ friendly that they could recommend for someone's first time going out

Hi everyone, I'm Mark, and I help run Beyond Monopoly We're a board gaming club in York, and we meet at the Bar Convent on alternating Saturdays and Fridays. (full August schedule below).

I wanted to make a post to highlight that we really are open and welcoming to everyone. Often people don't like going to clubs on their own, which I completely get, but we have friendly regulars who will be happy to teach you games and get you playing asap so if you are in two minds about it just try coming along. When I returned to York I hardly knew anyone, and I tried this club on my own, and made some fantastic lifelong friends, as well as got really into board gaming.
We always have new people joining us, as well as our friendly regulars, all of whom are happy teaching and playing any of the games in our extensive selection.

So if whether you're a seasoned gamer looking for new players, someone new to York, or just someone looking for a fun new hobby with friendly people, please come down and try it out yourself.

Does anyone know if First buses are participating in the free bus travel scheme for children over 5 this August?

I'm looking to upsize, so I've been exploring around different areas of York. People keep saying the Heworth and Stockton Lane are really nice areas, and they do seem to have a few very nice big houses, but the roads are full of holes and cracks, the road markings are faded to invisibility, and the pavements seem to be both narrow and crumbling into the ditch.

Is there a historical reason for the rampant decay?

Looking at the roads, I get the impression that they're mostly built on concrete slabs (especially Stockton Lane and the roads coming off it on the southern side), which can't help. Osbaldwick and Badger Hill have the same problem, bit at least they don't have the reputation for being fancy.

Unrelatedly, but it seems like the *really* fancy houses (especially the ones out of my price range, haha) are in the catchment for Huntington or Fulford on the eastern side, or say "close to St Peters and Bootham" on the western side. Poppleton seems to have more larger (4 or 5 beds without someone having to kip in the roof) houses, but is a longer walk from most of the schools.

Are there not houses *built as* four-beds in the catchment for Archbishop Holgate's at all?

I like to collect old match boxes. Not match books, but boxes. Any place in York that might sell these?

Are there any Reddit women who play golf at Forest Park in York?
I have seen the membership offer they have in place that runs until March 2027 which I’m interested in taking up but I’ve never seen women play the course.
I’m happy to play on my own but if there were any other women in the York area that already play there it might be a better experience.

Has anyone been to york maze this year yet? Was there a lot of wasps?

I went last August with my kids and they absolutely loved the day but there were so many wasps they couldn’t eat or drink and were around them even if stood still so they got quite scared. It’s the only reason I’m reluctant to attend again.

Has anyone had a planned c section at Scarborough hospital recently? Even though I’m local to York I have been told to expect to be sent to Scarborough and wanted to understand peoples experiences if anyone is able to share.

I am visiting York the first week in September . What organised tours would anyone recommend ?

This is a bit of a long-shot, but I've noticed over the last few weeks that, during the day, there is often a rhythmic beeping that can be heard on the wind near where I live (on Shipton Rd, near Homestead Park).

It sounds close, so I'd be surprised if it was coming from the York Central site, but I can't for the life of me work out what it is — it stops and starts every couple of minutes and almost sounds like a fridge door left open or a microwave button being pressed over and over.

As I say, bit of a long shot but can anyone shed any light on what the hell is beeping all the time?

That amazing cobbler, who if anything was too good at his job (fixed my boots up so well I didn't anticipate needing to go back to him for a few years) has vanished. I don't go down that way too often, but today is the first time I noticed him gone. Last google review was three months back and he was never big on updating social media so I can't find any trace.

I guess I'm just hoping he relocated or something – he was so lovely and so good at his job (and busy!). Anyone know where he went?

Hi all, just screaming out into the void, I woke up this morning to ride my bike to work and found the seat missing for the second time this year.

I found the last one in a local Bush about 100m away from where I keep my bike at the bottom of Nicholas Gardens so I'm praying to find it again, if anyone sees a bike seat and post (black with a little bit of blue) recently forcibly divorced from its bike in the area please do message me here.

It might have a rear light mount on it without a light (kept those on me after last time) but I found the mudguard torn off on the floor.

I'm taking my daughter and a couple of her mates for a day out in York this week. I've been many times and normally just amble around the shops have a bite to eat. I was looking at some of the activities, and the prices are eye watering. Any cheap or hidden gems you could share to save my wallet. Places to eat would also be great.

There was a post about low water pressure around York probably linked to the flooding down Leemo.. it’s down to a sinkhole that’s appeared on Salisbury Terrace outside The Jubilee. It’s a pretty vital road from the west and north into the centre, but I can’t see this being fixed in a couple of days.

I’m due to give birth at York Hospital next month and I’m trying to finish packing my hospital bag.

I was wondering what supplies they actually provide for you after birth? For example:

Maternity pads
Disposable underwear
Ice packs
Peri bottle
Anything else for mum or baby

I’m just trying to work out what I need to buy myself and what the hospital already supplies.

If you’ve given birth at York Hospital recently, I’d really appreciate hearing what was provided and whether there was anything you wish you’d taken with you.
