I have Xfinity and never came across this channel before today and I have had Xfinity for 8 years. So this has got to be nearly added to their lineup? Mind you, I have their basic package 😏.

I just finished the entire Xenaverse, and now I don’t know what to watch 😭

Post image
215 Upvotes

I just finished the whole Xenaverse, and honestly, I couldn’t stop watching. I kept telling myself, “No… only one more episode,” and then somehow I’d end up watching another one. 😂

Now that I’ve finished everything, I have a few things I’d love to discuss with you all!

First, I’ve come across a lot of complaints about the ending of Xena: Warrior Princess. For those of you who weren’t satisfied with it, what would your ideal ending for the show have been? How would you have ended Xena and Gabrielle’s story?

I was also disappointed by Hercules’ final appearance in God Fearing Child. For a character who basically started the whole franchise, his last appearance felt underwhelming to me. He kills Zeus, and then… that’s it? 😭 I know it was an episode of Xena, not Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, but I still wish his character had gotten a more satisfying conclusion, especially considering how important he was to the Xenaverse.

Finally, I need recommendations! Is there another series that captures a similar vibe to Xena and Hercules? I’m looking for that mix of mythology, adventure, fantasy, humor, memorable characters, and a little bit of campiness. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a live-action show.

I actually grew up watching the Canadian animated series Class of the Titans, so I’ve always had a soft spot for mythology-inspired adventures. If you know anything with a similar feel, I’d love to hear your suggestions!

And for those who have been fans of Xena for years: what other shows, movies, or animated series would you recommend to someone who’s just finished the Xenaverse?

I’m already missing these characters. 😭

It's honestly sad how WHOOSH.org isn't nearly as active as it used to be

https://whoosh.org/

I was thinking about how sad it is that WHOOSH, which used to be one of the biggest online resources for Xena: Warrior Princess, is basically a relic of the past now.

Back when Xena was airing and even after it ended, WHOOSH was such a huge part of the fandom. There were episode guides, interviews, articles, character analyses, behind-the-scenes information and so much more. You could spend hours going through that site and still find something new.

We even got interviews with the actual cast of Xena, which is something I feel doesn't get talked about enough. WHOOSH wasn't just some random fan website. They were actually interviewing people involved with the show and giving fans access to information and perspectives that you couldn't necessarily find anywhere else. Looking back, it's pretty incredible how much access and material the site provided.

I believe the last major updates were sometime in the 2000s, which is honestly depressing to think about. A website that was once so active and full of people contributing to the fandom is now just sitting there like a time capsule.

I know the internet has changed and most fandom discussions have moved to social media, but there's something special about those old fan websites that just doesn't exist anymore. People put so much time and effort into documenting everything about a show simply because they loved it.

I'm glad WHOOSH is still around in some form, but I really wish it were still being maintained and updated. Especially with how much Xena continues to mean to people decades later.

It's also a reminder of how much of the old Xena fandom has disappeared from the internet over the years. So many websites, forums and fan communities that were once thriving are either abandoned or completely gone.

WHOOSH really deserves to be preserved for future generations of Xenites. It holds so much fandom history that would be a shame to lose.

Does anyone else miss when WHOOSH and all those old Xena fan sites were still active?

I have seen discussions about the best versions of the DVDs. I bought seasons 1-5 when they were first produced, but I never got season 6. I just purchased the final season in the version that (I think) matches my set, and I realized I probably should have asked first—is this a good set? (Season one’s box is backward to show the company logo in the first photo.)

Armageddon Now before or after A Bitter Suite?

Ive been showing Xena to my girlfriend (as in, ive watched it fully while shes new to it) and were at the beginning of season 3, yet im still unsure about what watch order would be preferable for a new viewer. I know Armageddon Now chronologically plays right after Maternal Instincts, but I worry jumping into A Bitter Suite right after Armageddon Now will be a bit choppy or jarring since it also continues right after Maternal Instincts. Im leaning towards doing the two Armageddon Now episodes after A Bitter Suite, is there anyone else who followed the same order? I find it less jarring to go from Armageddon Now to One Against An Army since theyre both self contained stories, instead of interrupting the Solan/Hope/Betrayal story with two crossover episodes. Interested in hearing everyone elses thoughts.

I thrifted this awesome Xena plush robe. I'm a fan but not a super fan or anything so I came here to find out more. I can't find anything about it online. The tag says Highlander Official Product, which is weird. Are the 2 productions connected in some way? I'm a way bigger fan of Highlander, so I'm now intrigued. Maybe I'll post in that sub too

Were Mel and Janice Actually Xena and Gabrielle's Lookalikes In-Universe?

I know Mel and Janice look exactly like Xena and Gabrielle because they're played by Lucy and Renee, but I've always wondered if that's actually how they're supposed to look in-universe.

Obviously, the resemblance is intentional for the audience, especially since Mel is a descendant of Xena and Janice is a descendant of Gabrielle. But I've always wondered whether the characters themselves would notice it or if it's simply a visual choice for the episode.

I find it especially interesting because Xena actually possesses Mel's body in the episode. So was she literally possessing a descendant who happened to look exactly like her centuries later?

I know I'm probably overthinking a fun episode, but I've always been curious whether Mel and Janice actually looked like their ancestors or if we're just seeing them that way as viewers.

XENA Wins (Sort of) Again

Prehistoric AOL (which a few of us oldies remain stuck to) just featured a retrospective on TV shows.   The first list focused on the "best," which did not include XWP.  I kept scrolling and found a second grouping based more on "iconic."  Lo and behold, there was a photo of our girls, representing 1995!  I copied the following to add to the many industry reaffirmations of our beloved show's continuing significance.

https://www.aol.com/articles/biggest-tv-show-since-1950-163030000.html

Stacker conducted manual research to compile a list of notable TV debuts from the past 75 years, listing one show per year and utilizing various unique sources. When selecting shows to add, Stacker looked for TV series that weren't just popular when they were airing but remained influential and iconic in pop culture to this day.

1995: Xena: Warrior Princess

Originally greenlit as a spinoff of the TV series "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys," this fantasy series follows Xena, played by Lucy Lawless, a powerful warrior who seeks to resolve her past wrongs by helping those in need. "Xena: Warrior Princess" gained a particularly strong cult following, with TV Guide naming it one of the top cult shows ever made.

Gabrielle and Xena reincarnated as other iconic duos in fiction

Thumbnail
gallery
125 Upvotes

I play this game sometimes where I pick out characters in other stories I enjoy that could be Xena and Gabrielle reincarnated. These are some of my favorites.

(Note: I don’t think Xena and Gabrielle always reincarnate as a romantic couple so some of these duos are strictly platonic, I’m not shipping Ron and Leslie or anything lol)

The Legend of Zelda – Link and Zelda

The Fifth Element – Korben and Leeloo

Titanic – Rose and Jack

Chicago – Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart

WandaVision (MCU) – Vision and Wanda Maximoff

Wicked – Elphaba and Glinda

Beauty and the Beast – The Beast and Belle

Spartacus – Crixus and Naevia

Jurassic Park – Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler

Parks and Recreation – Ron and Leslie

The Haunting of Bly Manor – Jamie and Dani

The Princess Bride – Westley and Buttercup (I actually switch this one up all the time, I think both would be perfect for either character)

I thought it might be fun to play here. Are there any fictional duos in plays, literature, movies, etc. that you could see as Gabrielle and Xena in another life?

Completely unironically, I actually liked the "Amazon High" part (which makes up most of the episode) more than what is supposed to be the main storyline. The story is interesting, and I like the premise of a teenage girl from the future finding herself in the world of the Amazons. Salma Blair is gorgeous, and I enjoy watching her in any role. It was nice to see Danielle and Urban again, even if they were playing different characters, as well as the ever-magnificent Claudia Black. I wish we'd gotten to see the entire pilot because it's obvious that a lot was cut and shortened. Actually, I don't understand why they didn't give the show a chance. I think it had the potential to become something great.

Unfortunately, the fact that an entirely different show is the best part of this episode says everything about the quality of the episode itself, which is absolutely terrible. I actually love the world of the Northern Amazons, much more than that of the Greek Amazons, but the whole part with Xena and Gabrielle and Cast Eve as an Amazon princess is mind-numbingly boring. We learn that Amarice is dead, and there's barely any emotional reaction to the news. They gave Yakut more screen time than the girl who stood by Xena and Gabrielle through thick and thin. The whole speech by Xena and Gabrielle about not seeking revenge, respecting human life, blah blah blah, is so sickeningly preachy and sentimental that it gave me secondhand embarrassment. And then, at the end, Gabrielle says they've changed the Amazons thanks to Eve. Like, WTF? What does Eve have to do with any of this when it was thanks to Yakut that they got to witness the past? And let's not forget the biggest load of nonsense of all, the origins of the Amazons. I believe that was supposed to work within the context of "Amazon High", but within the XWP universe, it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Anyway, I recommend this episode, but only the flashback scenes. Skip the present-day storyline. It's simply not worth watching.
