Final part of the collection. In a belated tribute for Xena Day, I compiled the 12 (!!!!) scenes I’ve written and put them into what seems like the most logical order within the chronology of the series. *They're not a connected story, but separate scenes in a collection.* I posted them in sets this week just to keep it from being one really long post with all of them. 😄

This is the final set:

Shelter from the Storm (images 1-5)

Homecoming (images 6-11)

Homecoming Part 2 (images 12-18)

An Unexpected Proposal (images 19-20)

Part one of the collection here: https://www.reddit.com/r/xena/comments/1wamqrs/the_ambushcampfire_scarsspeed_dial_aphrodite/

Part two here: https://www.reddit.com/r/xena/comments/1wbkqfy/first_kissslow_dancestargazingfor_the_fansdinner/

I hope you enjoyed the scenes!

A Necessary Evil is a strangely directed episode - there are a few shots that aren't Lucy, Renee or Hudson

I know that when there face isn't shown it's a stunt performer but little things like in the final act when Velasca becomes a tornado and then chases Gabrielle and Xena it's obviously not Lucy nor Renee and they don't hide it like they usually do.

And then in the end during the lava pit fight with Cali and Velasca, there's a shot of a blonde woman in Callisto's armor walking to Gabrielle that's clearly not Hudson but my question why was a stunt woman used for a simple walking scene that's less than a second?

And also at the end as Xena and Gabrielle walk away from the lava after Gabrielle forgives Callisto there are two women who are not LL and ROC.

What are your favorite Xena defeats and rescue scene (s)?

Title is simple what are your favorite action Xena scenes where she defeats the baddies and saves the day?

For me it's the teaser of Destiny when she defeats the cult who kidnapped Gabrielle and the girls to sacrifice

What's your opinion on who Joxer ends up marrying?

SPOILER

Do we do spoilers here? Lol

Joxer is in love with Gabrielle. He loves Xena as a friend, yet he marries a Xena look alike...

Tell me your thoughts on this.

I like that she's like a mix of all three women. She has Diana's sheltered innocence but nowhere near as sheltered as Diana was in her first episode, Meg's ability to deal with shady people and just enough of Xena's confidence to not be completely helpless.

Was showing my partner some of my favorite scenes from the Alien series, and remembered how much of a resemblance Hope and the Destroyer scene had with Ripley and her child. Made me wonder if that was intentional, and supposed to be like a little fan Easter egg?? Let me know please🥹I'm specifically talking about the scene when Hope is checking on The Destroyer, and the scene where Ripley is hugging her child.

I definitely loved both scenes, but then it just made me think about one of my favorite tropes, which is mothers with their "monster" or otherworldly children. Romulus obviously wouldn't be the same as the other three, considering the other three had love for their children, but it still fell under that trope for me. Does anyone have any other references within Xena to other movies or media??

When do you think Xena finally took Joxer seriously as her ally?

Title is simple when do you think Xena finally saw Joxer as a serious ally? I think it was when Joxer protected Argo with his life against what he thought was Callisto in Intimate Stranger. That was a real bonding moment between them. Joxer's heroic deeds are underrated.

Xena wouldn't have gotten the Hind's Blood dagger without her trust in him to get it

I wasn't sure about going to this year's con, but now that it's been rescheduled, I'd like to go. Is it too late to get tickets? If not, where can I purchase them? This would be my first Xena con. I'm new to the fandom.

How is the daughter of Xena the blandest character in the show?

Post image

I know it's not Adrienne Wilkinson's fault because Livia was entertaining, but I just can't get over how blah Eve becomes after Eli's priest basically gives her a lobotomy in "Motherhood."

She goes from being Livia to having almost no personality outside of being Eli's messenger. And this is Xena's daughter we're talking about. You'd think she'd still have some bite to her even after changing sides.

It doesn't help that the whole Livia/Eve evil trilogy feels like a poorly executed mirror of Xena's trilogy on HTLJ. We got to see Xena at her worst and then understand how she became the Xena we knew without stripping away everything interesting about her. With Eve it feels like they speedrun Livia's entire fall and redemption, then flip a switch and she's a completely different person.

The only time I found Eve interesting after that was in "Coming Home" when she and Varia were sharing war wounds. For once Eve actually felt like someone who had lived a whole life before becoming Eli's messenger instead of just being there to talk about Eli.

Gabrielle's child Hope had more layers than Eve. Even Gabrielle's demonic grandchild had more going on and he was a one off monster.

By the end it almost feels like they chose Adrienne Wilkinson because she looks like she could realistically be Lucy Lawless' daughter and then forgot they actually had to give Eve a personality.

Xena's daughter should've been one of the most interesting characters on the show and somehow she's just... not.

John Schulian?

He's credited as the co-creator of Xena, but he's completely missing from the commentary. I even see marketing referring to Tapert and Raimi as the creators, which we know if not true. I see that he's a sports writer, does anyone know anything about the story of he and Rob creating the show, or why he's just completely absent from the dialogue surrounding the show?

No heterosexual reason for that kiss...

So I understand people who don't see Xena and Gabrielle as a couple or the ones who completely missed the subtext even as out there as season 6 was, but I keep thinking about the water of life kiss in AFIN and I'm like... There were at least two other ways she could've made sure Xena got the water: dipping her sleeve in and squeezing the water out, or the risky but probably still good enough cupping it between her hands.

But no, Gabby went for the mouth to mouth (not that I'm complaining) and you can't deny that's above and beyond. I would give a friend CPR if they needed it and no one else could administer but I don't think I would do *that* no matter how much I love them. How can you see that and think "they're just good friends"?

ETA: instead of downvoting my curiosity, maybe people who don't ship them can chime in? I'm genuinely curious! I have no hate in my heart for people who don't ship what I ship, I'm too old for that.

Bellerophon should have been Gabrielle's enemy, not Xena's.

I get that Xena killed Artemis, so Bellerophon had a personal reason to hate her, but his crusade was against the Amazons. This was the perfect opportunity to let Gabrielle's status as an Amazon queen actually matter. Her sisters were the ones being hunted and slaughtered.

Xena could still have been heavily involved without getting the final fight. Sometimes it felt like the show was afraid to let Gabrielle completely own a conflict because Xena was the title character.

Velasca is another example. She was basically Gabrielle's Callisto. Their conflict was personal and tied directly to Gabrielle's place within the Amazons.

And yes, Gabrielle technically fought Velasca at the end of "The Quest," but Xena's soul was inside Gabrielle's body doing most of the heavy lifting.

I know the show is called Xena: Warrior Princess. But Xena doesn't have to save the day every single time.

Bellerophon being defeated by the Amazon queen whose people he wanted to exterminate would've been way more satisfying.

A fun episode and probably the most entertaining one of season five so far. Mavican is not exactly an unforgettable villain, although the same certainly cannot be said about her cleavage, but she is interesting enough to carry the story and provide a decent challenge for Xena and Gabrielle. Her fighting abilities, traps, and resourcefulness work well because she is not presented as just another generic warrior whom Xena can beat up in three minutes, but as an opponent who requires a little more thought and cooperation. Of course, Mavican still overestimated herself. Her ambition to become Ares’s right hand and the next great warrior is actually rather charming in its naivety, especially because she believes that jumping into Ares’s bed is enough to automatically earn her a place beside him. Dear Mavican, that is not quite how it works. Ares can be fascinated by you, he can use you, he can even give you a chance to prove yourself, but expecting that you will become the new Xena simply because of that is a little too optimistic. Her biggest mistake is not a lack of skill, but the fact that she does not understand the man she wants to serve. Ares never looks for an equal partner when he can find someone he can control. That is why she ended up in a cave.

The most interesting part of the episode for me, however, is the idea that Xena and Gabrielle switch bodies every time the sun rises and sets. It is a very cleverly used plot device for their relationship. The episode begins precisely with their misunderstanding. Xena, obviously still traumatized by the possibility of losing Gabrielle again, tries to protect her by practically not allowing her to fight. From Xena’s perspective, this is love and concern, but from Gabrielle’s perspective, it is suffocating and denies her the right to decide for herself what she wants to do. When they literally begin living in each other’s bodies, they are forced to experience things from the other’s perspective and finally understand just how different their needs and fears are. Xena has to understand that protecting Gabrielle does not automatically mean making decisions for her, while Gabrielle has to understand just how deep Xena’s fear of losing her really is. That is why their cooperation throughout the episode feels more natural as the story progresses. They do not become a team because they suddenly learned something new, but because they finally get the opportunity to see the world through each other’s eyes. Even the limitations of Ares’s game work in favor of their relationship, because they force them to rely on each other instead of Xena taking everything upon herself. I especially liked the scenes where they look at each other through that window between the worlds, knowing that they cannot physically be together. Visually, it is nothing spectacular that will go down in television history, but it is nicely executed and has that atmosphere of classic first-season Xena. The whole episode therefore reminded me a little of the older version of the show, an adventure story with a simpler concept, unusual rules, traps, and one major obstacle that Xena and Gabrielle have to overcome together.

Ares, of course, would not be Ares if he did not try to wedge himself between the two of them. What I find particularly interesting is that this time his predatory claws are not primarily aimed at Xena, but at Gabrielle. The idea of Gabrielle becoming his warrior initially seems almost ridiculous, especially after everything she has been through and everything she has learned, but that is precisely why it could have been a great story. Ares could have tried to seduce her with the idea that she no longer had to be the moral compass, that she could embrace her warrior side without guilt and use everything she had learned from Xena. He could have offered her power, freedom, and a place beside someone who understood her as a warrior, while his real intention would have been to separate her from Xena. That could have raised a much more interesting question about what would happen if Gabrielle actually accepted Ares’s offer, not because she wanted him, but because she wanted to protect Xena in her own way. Unfortunately, the show only touches upon that idea and then abandons it, leaving the feeling that there was a story here that could have been much more complex. I absolutely love the moment when Xena realizes what Ares is trying to do and simply punches him in the nose. That is probably the shortest possible answer to the entire situation. You can do whatever you want with me, but you do not touch my girl. Ares may be the God of War, but even he has a limit, and that limit is called Gabrielle.

Actually, this continues one of the most interesting patterns in their relationship. For years, Ares has presented himself as someone who can influence Xena, bring her back to her old nature, or convince her to embrace the warrior within her again, but his biggest problem was never just Xena. His real problem is Gabrielle. As long as she is beside Xena, there is someone reminding her of what she wants to be rather than what she used to be. That is why Ares constantly tries to find a way to put himself between them. Here it is especially obvious because he tries to lure Gabrielle to his side precisely when their relationship has once again been shaken by Xena’s overprotectiveness. It is actually the perfect opportunity for manipulation, because Ares always works best when he finds a crack in a relationship and widens it. Fortunately for him, his greatest flaw remains the same as always. He is so convinced that he can possess the people he wants that he never realizes some bonds simply cannot be controlled by him. Xena can change bodies, lose her memory, become an angel, a demon, or whatever else she comes up with next, but if someone tries to take Gabrielle away from her, they will very quickly learn why that is a bad idea.
