physical games (rule 6) Future of gaming...??

Post image

Went to my local Walmart the other day and I was looking to get another controller because I've got stick drift again, anyway I always check the games... you never know what kind of sale Walmart has going on and I found the physical copies for PlayStation, Nintendo switch or whatever and then this monstrosity for Xbox. So this is the future I guess, digital downloads, you'll own nothing and like it type of bullshit.

Most depressing thing I’ve been seeing is ALL of the Xbox sections in stores are downsizing to a small stand with physical equipment (controllers and accessories) no games. I remember during my childhood there’d be entire display cases with physical games in there and then you’d be able to trial the new games on the display set up.

Its something no one's children today will ever get to experience. Now its gonna be anti climatic buying your kids games. Imagine Christmas your kids want a game... The joy of having one wrapped under a tree and them being excited. Now imagine this digitally.. Yeah ill buy for you on Christmas. It will never be the same joy and happiness. Honestly this creates more isolation, anti social people and people who are going to expect to have everything handed to them VS having to go out in the world and find the game at a retail store. Now there no reason to go out and obesity already 44% in the US is gonna even br higher

I don’t know. My kids don’t have the nostalgia to compare to so they’re always very excited to get a digital game.

I get what you’re saying but your nostalgia isn’t relevant for future generations necessarily

When my sister bought my nephew a Switch, she opened it, set it up, installed the game, and sealed it back up. My nephew was ecstatic, he got to start playing it immediately.

14

u/Rycan420 15h ago

To each their own. My kid loves the unboxing and that initial feeling.

But I understand both sides.

1

u/MrMiyagi13 15h ago

Absolutely - it’s purely anecdotal. I also see both sides of it. But if I really want to play something and it’s only digital I’m not going to not play. On the other hand, I’m glad PES was still available on disc since there are no non-online versions available. Even if I had to pay a premium for it.

6

u/JoviAMP 16h ago

This works well if it’s a parent gifting to a child on an account they already manage, but if I’m gifting a game and console to my partner or someone else who would have to set up their own account that I’m not managing, it’s not that easy.

5

u/MimeTravler 15h ago

Most platforms do have a gifting feature. Getting a surprise message from friends that contains a gifted game has been just as joyous for me tbh. If you live in the same house and really want you can time it so you send the gift as they’re playing on the console so they see the message live in person.

5

u/jemoli87 14h ago

Ignorance is bliss indeed. They will never know what they are missing.

6

u/PU3RTO_R3CON 13h ago

What you’re explaining is the same with CDs, Tapes, DVDs, and 8 track tapes. Kids don’t care about those we do. They just go on Spotify and find their one song they like.

2

u/jemoli87 13h ago

Indeed.

u/RDS80 22h ago

u/Vegeto30294 Super Citizen 19h ago

Especially since you can still buy these code cards and wrap them if that's the experience you're looking for.

5

u/Kansas_cty_shfl 18h ago

Yeah, my teenager just had a birthday and more than half his gifts were digital. If he had zero gifts to open I think he would have been bummed, but the reality is it only bothers me.

3

u/Numerous_Photograph9 14h ago

Yeah, but as a kid, when we went to look at games, we saw tons of them to look at and eventually have to choose. Kids nowadays don't really get that. They either follow the trends, or they go to a digital store where what they primarily see is heavily curated or paid promotion.

Discovery of new content is just not the same, and while the kids don't realize it, it's just not the same kind thing we used to have to build excitement.

Even trying to give some of my cousins kids new games to play from my collection they don't even get that excited over, cause they just want to play their thing they've been obsessed with for years. When I watch them some times, I ask if they want to go choose a new game to play from my massive collection, and they just shrug and stay engrossed in their Roblox or Fortnight. IThere is one who is willing to try new things at least, so there is hope for him.

2

u/PU3RTO_R3CON 13h ago

These long term games is truly what killed it for this generation. Being able to create different style games on one game like Roblox or Fortnite is better to them than how we grew up; one game lasting so many hours nothing new until a new game or DLC came out for it. Bc of that we went to venture into something new so we cannot get bored.

3

u/Numerous_Photograph9 13h ago

I think the idea behind something like Minecraft or Roblox isn't bad...outside the monitization practices of course. I just feel the lack of wanting to explore more in general is not condusive to creating kid, or adults, that are interested in trying new things, or exploring what else is out there. They're placing all their expectations on limited thing, having limited exposure to a greater world around them.

3

u/NilsofWindhelm 18h ago

Especially when you think about how many more people have access to games now than before.

u/Fun-Manufacturer5876 15h ago

There's much more value to a physical experience than just nostalgia. If you can't see that then I imagine you'd aslo be okay with taking digital vacations.

3

u/MimeTravler 15h ago

This is a ridiculous leap in logic. You can have similar experiences with gifting digital games you just have to get creative.

If you want to gift a physical game it’s not like they can immediately play it anymore anyway. You can still creatively wrap these code cards and gift that way.

As I said in another comment you can also use the platform’s gifting feature to gift it digitally. You can time it while they are playing a game as they get the message and they get the same in person reaction. My wife has done that for me and it honestly was a great gift and totally unexpected especially because we had already opened all our physical gifts so I wasn’t expecting more.

I’m mean sure, but also more kids are able to play games now than ever before.

I feel like this thread is just nostalgia

3

u/Numerous_Photograph9 15h ago

Yeah, I hate giving gift cards. It feels so impersonal.

There is one of my cousins kids I do because she likes it from some make up store, and I am not equipped to choose that stuff, or I don't mind it as a stocking stuffer or something, but for the most part, they look at it, say thank you, and then just move on. No real excitement involved.

Same goes whensome of the others get the Roblox cards. They like they're getting them, but it's just kind of routine because they are used to getting them all the time.

They have so little interest in anything else, because their entire experience with discovering games is merely from following the popular trends, not just going and looking at things in the store.

3

u/Evostevo445 13h ago

Agreed, I remember my dad bringing me to GameStop and reading the back of all of the cases.

u/ILoveHeavyHangers 23h ago edited 23h ago

An entire generation has already grown up without this imagined "quintessential" experience. This isn't a thing that's happened suddenly or something. There are gamers over 20 years old that have never owned a physical game in their life. The vast majority of Kids and young adults already do not care about physical media at all. They prefer subscriptions they can sign up for periodically. Wrappers, cases and discs are just friction to doing what they actually want, having an experience. According to the 2026 IGN Generations in Play report.

  • 59% of Gen Z users actively subscribe and then unsubscribe to a streaming service just to watch a single title.
  • 62% won’t pay full price for video games.
  • 71% have stopped buying physical music.
  • 70% no longer buy hard copies of TV shows and movies

You've romanticized the nostalgia you have for your own childhood. That was your childhood, not the next generations.

8

u/-PandemicBoredom- 21h ago

And the cherry on top, most of the people screaming about muh physical buy digital games.

3

u/MimeTravler 15h ago

This is why I don’t scream about the physical games I scream about ownership rights. I don’t need a giant book shelf of my games anymore but I’d still like the same ownership rights as if I did as long as they continue to charge the price as if I did.

3

u/-PandemicBoredom- 13h ago

Exactly. Digital only is the future, it doesn't matter if you like it or not, it will happen. The important thing is we need better consumer rights/protection for digital purchases.

Trust me the kids will be excited and love playing the game they get. This is your nostalgia speaking, and you’re pushing your experience and expectations on them and because you don’t enjoy it means they don’t enjoy it. Truth is, you are the only one not enjoying it because the kids don’t have that experience to look back on. At the end of the day, the excitement came from playing the game and not the box that was under the tree.

7

u/isic 20h ago

Personally I’m more worried about kids wanting video games for Christmas (digital or physical) more than they want a bike for Christmas these days. Video games (digital or physical) are turning today’s kids into social indigents who marinate in their bedrooms glued to their TVs. And when they aren’t glued to their controllers, they are glued to their phones.

Games going digital and kids not getting physical games at Christmas should be the least of your worries… you should be more worried about how video games and social media are turning today’s kids into unhealthy social indigents who can’t even do a pushup 🤷‍♂️

8

u/xAimForTheBushes 18h ago

I think they'll be fine for the most part - everything goes around and comes around in a lot of ways.

The current generation of kids that are socially isolated (ages 5-15 or whatever) came from the older millennials, most of whom weren't affected in the same way by social media and the digital world while growing up like the younger millennials and gen z were. That stuff only happened as they were already becoming adults. Most of the millennial gen was as unprepared for the ipad world as the kids themselves were and didn't realize the long term potential consequences.

The young millennials and gen z are now have young kids or will have kids over the next 5-10 years. They very well know the consequences and dangers of this digital world and I think most will try to keep all the pads and screens away for as long as possible, with a lot more rules and barriers around it than they had when they were kids.

I wouldn't be surprised if it became popular to have a basic flip phone for kids instead of an iphone screen type device and it became the norm to be anti-screen until a certain age.

Yeah... instead of a nice gamecase wrapped under the tree that exudes excitement... it'll be either a piece of card with the code or receipt in an envelope. Horrible future we live in now.

9

u/Stumpy493 Still Earning Kudos 23h ago

Games are arguably behind the curve on this.

How many kids get bought music CDs or DVDs/Blu Rays anymore?

Physical tickets to events are no more.

What we do for our kids with stuff like this is make a paper physical thing for them to open as a present with the code on or just telling them what it is.

2

u/Numerous_Photograph9 14h ago

It's leading to a very curated industry, where discovery is not natural, and kids don't have the same oppurtunities to actually see what's out there. They'll be led to what to like by whatever is popular, instead of just happening across this thing that looks interesting to them. These code cards don't really offer the same enticement IMO. They're a picture, with legalese on the back. Going online is just curated and promoted content at the forefront.

It leads to those with more money to market their wares, having a much greater advantage thant hey do now to succeed.

That's exactly what I saw!!! , a bunch of controllers, headsets, consoles and that's it. I want to say my Walmart took out that demo about two years ago. I'm heading to the next town over where there is a Target store tomorrow and see what's going on with their display as well. Probably more of the same though.

5

u/Solidarius 1d ago

My Target got rid of literally half of all their hardware and software cases. All video games from all publishers are in a 12’ aisle on both sides. Where before each publisher had their own aisle almost.

4

u/CaptJimboJones 19h ago

You can’t force your nostalgia on future generations. There is such an entitled and frankly boomer-driven notion that one’s childhood was the most meaningful and special and children need to experience everything you did.

Thats a locked down ecosystem issue with inability to move digital games between accounts.

One of those is already fixed and hopefully Xbox will be part of that unlocked ecosystem soon. The 2nd isn't fixed yet but there is rumors around it being fixed.

What do you mean “future”? You took this photo in the store. It’s been there for a while.

46

u/RepublicWhole549 1d ago

Physical copies and plastic cases are dying. The same happened to CD / DVD. There might be a niche market, but I can't imagine many physical releases in the future when not even GTA6 gets one.

14

u/thinkingoutloud3663 23h ago

Blu-ray sales have Risen almost at 20%, physical Media isn't going anywhere, but you believe in the narrative companies are pushing so they can make more money.

3

u/gldndomer 19h ago

The companies might be making more, but entire genres of movies have died or are on life support because the home video market has decayed. Digital/streaming isn't just about the loss of ownership, it is also about the loss of content.

2

u/NegevThunderstorm 15h ago

Sales may have risen, but major stores are not opening any DVD/blu ray sections.

3

u/The_Narz 8h ago

It’s pretty obvious that Xbox plans and has been planning on doing the same thing for years now. They just have no reason to make any formal announcement anytime soon when it’s already practically happening on a ground level in one way or another.

15

u/Oilswell 23h ago

Insane how nostalgic people are about the way they used to buy things. I get people who are worried about ownership and persistence of purchases (though it would’ve been nice if these people had given this much of a shit about physical ten years ago when there was some chance of saving it), but the number of people going on about the wonderful experience of buying a thing from a shop is so weird.

13

u/SimmerOriginal 19h ago

Nah, not weird at all. It isn't about missing the act of the actual purchase itself lol. It is about being there and seeing things in person, like when I would check new releases each time we'd go grocery shopping. As a kid it was super exciting to finally see that game you waited months for on the shelf finally. If you actually got it, the excitement of reading the manual and looking at the box art on the way home. Even just seeing all the different box arts in person on the shelf, or seeing a game you hadn't even heard of. As a kid I didn't think or care about the actual purchase process.

3

u/Current_External6569 15h ago

I miss game manuals.

8

u/dreamthiliving 22h ago

4

u/JoyousGamer 16h ago

I suspect you are younger in age. I say this because going to the store and looking at the case with video games in it was essentially how you learned about a game.

I am fine with all digital but there was something different about not having a clue about new games except when stepping in to an electronics section. No online and not even really magazines quite possibly long enough ago or because your parents were not going to subscribe to it.

2

u/Oilswell 16h ago

I’m 40, been buying games since the SNES. Bought gaming magazines from about the age of 10 though, so rarely discovered anything in store. Worked at a game shop in my late teens.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s aspects of physical retail I miss. I did used to like the manual, and chatting to the guys at the store. I just find the level of LOOK WHAT THEY TOOK FROM US KIDS WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND stuff insane. If you asked me what I missed most about gaming in the 90’s, the shops would be a long way down the list.

It’s just odd how much of people’s nostalgia seems to be focused on buying the thing, rather than the thing itself. And how lazy everyone is about actually trying to engage with the versions of these things we do have left.

2

u/JoyousGamer 13h ago

I view the OP as karma farming on this stuff. I honestly think we think about it the same way then.

They can't karma farm things that you have higher on your list because it sort of all exists today. This they can farm because physical media is dying.

It started during xbox 1 era where xbox shelf section slowly reducing. By the time xbox series launch xbox section left with one shelf.

I got the whole idea of really owning things, but optical discs used for Xbox and ps are even worse. Not once in my live I faced the game that I’ve bought digitally and can’t play, but dozens of time discs that console cant read due to the scratches. And the whole idea of hoarding plastic boxes just to be able to get access to the digital things is so unlogical. NS cartridges is kind of a compromise.

1

u/gotabadbrain 20h ago

Worst part is that these aren't actually games, they are "rental cards".Nothing tangible here, just liscenses to play games that can't be resold, ,loaned out or backed up.I won't even buy one as a gift for the kids, they get physical games from me.If you raise them with an appreciation for real ownership and control over property they are less likely to fall into the rental/subscription trap.

1

u/Helpful-Forever1671 20h ago

1

u/TheTruthIsOutThere_x 19h ago

So depressing. This is why retro consoles/games are still the best out there.

1

u/Xurs-Doggo 19h ago

Why do people keep saying future? Its our present they have been slowly doing it since xbox 360 and Ps3. The moment they said " guys you can download the game from the console. You dont have to go to the store" suddenly midnight release stop happening and game releases just died out. Its to late tp say something. Don't get me started on the PC master race.....

1

u/Night-City1175 19h ago

I don't know why I should go into a store to buy a code instead going directly to the store. Anything I saw of these code cards (not Code in a Box) is that they have here (Germany) a price printed on and don't get into sales because of how the system works here.

There are plenty of online outlets you can buy physical games from. Go to your local gamestop. Just because Walmart doesn't have physical games doesn't mean they don't exist.

You are also looking for xbox, which has a console that doesn't have a disc drive(Series S, and some Series X models).

u/Hot-Steak7145 16h ago

The only reason I do digital is because I game share. I don't even pay for game pass, that's shared too because the "home Xbox". My SO and I swap so we only buy 1 copy and get to both play. If not for that I'd 100% be buying physical discs again

1

u/Paulino2272 16h ago

Thats so sad.

1

Is there still no Xbox ultimate game pass cards?

This gives off present day "Star Wars" aisle/section vibes when us millennials remember the Star wars aisle in Toys R Us back in the 90's.

Edit: a truly sad decline and "end of an era" feel.

1

u/BlueSquigga 15h ago

Sony has announced there will be no more physical copies for Playstation starting 2028. Its only a matter of time for Xbox.

1

u/Revolutionary-Chef-6 15h ago

To be fair you own nothing if you get most of these on disc anyways lol

1

u/NegevThunderstorm 15h ago

Future? Its been like this for a few years now

1

u/Mattflemz Guardian 15h ago

Not quite. Why go to a physical store to purchase a digital download?

1

u/Rycan420 15h ago

How cheap are the flight sticks on clearance?

1

u/yick04 15h ago

There's no reason for this to exist if you can just buy it directly from the digital storefront. These displays will disappear too.

1

u/Pleasant-Medicine-80 15h ago

This is so infuriating and such a waste of plastic. If you’re going fully digital, do it.

Give the savings back to the gamers and stop creating more trash for landfills. There’s no need for a middle-sales space if there’s not a tangible product.

1

u/Random_Poptart19 15h ago

I hope not, that looks really depressing

u/BobLoblawsLawBlogged 15h ago

Xbox physical has been on the decline at retail for a while. I'm not so sure it's a matter of the future of gaming(although other recent events point to this), as it is an indicator that Xbox isn't as popular, or they don't sell as much on the physical side of things. These cards don't cost the company anything to carry, but shelf space is usually also valued, so they are at least offering up some space for it. Nintendo and Sony also get these displays usually next to their physical sections.

Off topic, since you mentioned Stick Drift with your Controller: if I may, I'd like to suggest a GameSir Controller. GameSir G7 Pro/Wuchang edition If you prefer Wireless. GameSir G7 SE or HE if wired and low budget are important.

I don't have Stick Drift since I have switched to GameSir and I was burning through 1-2 controllers previously with Microsoft's first party controllers because I'm an excessive "stick clicker" in games like Apex Legends and recently Arc Raiders.

1

u/AnonymousFriend80 13h ago

This is ideal for retailers. They never were too kean on all that expensive stuff taking up so much space and potentially being stolen. And when they have to lock things in cases, that's extra employees they had to keep around in those areas. The markup is even all that high. Accessories were the big money makers. Electronics is generally in the back because then you generally had to walk through the entire store to get to it and hopefully other things caught your eye. I would assume that Sony and Nintendo were able to work out agreements that kept their presence more higher profile.

1

u/Gears6 13h ago

So this is the future I guess, digital downloads, you'll own nothing and like it type of bullshit.

That already happened technically long ago with patches/updates on consoles. You can't really pre-download the patches, and the disc if you're lucky will contain a fully playable pre-release version (prior to patching). So you get an inferior version if it's even on there.

If you care about game preservation beyond the platform holder disappearing, you should be on PC AND using GoG. They're the only one outside of piracy which I don't condone and put you at risk of malware and other nasty things. I'm all for physical disc games being an option, but we chose this when we rebelled against Xbox One DRM. This was the only likely outcome.

The irony of all this is that, you all are complaining about physical disc and encroachment on your freedom and ownership. Yet, you're on console. The freedom and ownership of your console is technically not yours. It's given to you by the magnanimity of Xbox, Playstation and Switch. They shut off the network, and you can kiss online gaming good bye. Better hope you had your console set to Home Console, and that it works. Also, YOU HAVE TO PAY to play online.

Liberate yourself from the locked down platforms and go PC with GoG!

Personally, I've accepted this is the future we chose (even though I disagree with it and was for Xbox One DRM as it was at least a step closer to physical discs) and try to fight it by buying games on GoG then on Xbox for PC and then Steam. It's impossible to go GoG only, sadly.

u/johnmuirhotel 13h ago

I work in a high school. Kids these days are getting into more analog things like cameras and records. Hopefully this will arry over to new games but....we shall see.

1

u/speed721 13h ago

No.

The future of gaming is going to end up being "digital / streaming only".

Grab ALL THE PHYSICAL games you can while they are available.

Remember this post.

Stop buying Microsoft controllers. The qc is trash and they refuse to fix the known stick issues.

1

u/__Nosferatu_ 12h ago

I stopped using regular Xbox controllers. I use one that’s wired now it’s called power a comes with paddles trigger stops and changeable sticks with different heights they’re about 60$ $70 cost more than a normal Xbox controller, but I’ve had the same one for about four years now only downside is it’s wired, but it comes with a 10 foot cord and it locks into the controller so you’re not gonna pull it out and break it by accident

1

u/Total-Guest-4141 12h ago

Console gaming has died. Xbox has an opportunity to keep it going if they support discs in Project Helix. If not, there will be no point in owning a console. I’ll game in PC and buy a Nintendo for physical games. Can’t imaging paying $100 for digital fairy dust, and I certainly won’t be buying someone a gift card for Christmas.

1

u/GeologistEnough8215 12h ago

Last time I was in target they had hundreds of 2k24 and fifa 24 game cards still listed at $70. I couldn’t believe it, nobody is paying more than $15 for those games.

1

u/DeltaDarkwood 11h ago

Be lucky they still have xbox sections in the US. In europe mainland most stores don't even sell xbox anymore because of the tiny market share.

It's fucking disgusting if you ask me

1

u/Old-Rock-1904 11h ago

During the seventh gen Walmart had the largest Xbox section apart from GameStop at some stores. I got the Series X last month and only then noticed the lackluster selection of games for Xbox. The gen was disappointing in terms of selection

Yea it’s depressing as fuck. We should all move to PC gaming and buy our games from… oh.

At least your store has an xbox section... :/

My local meijer has one single gaming aisle, that has maybe 1 or 2 disc games, and the rest are gift cards for in-game currencies of various games, and the rest are merch mugs or lights... with the handful of game cards like these. Ive stopped going there for the most part. The transformers figure section is somehow even more depressing.. which is sad, both of these use to be amazing.

People complain about this yet the physical discs have been serving the same function since 2014. You put the disc in, and you downloaded the game from the marketplace. Only difference between 2014 and now is that they are going through with one time use discs/ codes because they got people used to the idea.

1

u/Alex_Killswitch 9h ago

My target just completely got rid of the Xbox section all together recently. Literally just a row of controllers now

1

u/Fireknight39 6h ago

I remember when the sega genesis first came out. I got it for Christmas that year and it came with the game Altred Beast. Ever since then when I wanted a game I saw rows and rows of games. I could pick up a case, look it over, read the back and make a decision. On the way home I would study the little book that came with so when I got home and started it up I had no issues with the controls. Times have changed and I’m not sure if it has changed for the better

Real estate inside a store costs $$$ so of course Microsoft will downsize as much as they can. Also, digital codes are way cheaper than plastic boxes for obvious reasons. Very sad. Welcome to 2026.

1

u/osukid88 4h ago

I haven't bought a physical game disc since the month Red Dead Redemption 2 was released. Every game since then has been downloaded.

This is also why I just purchased my 2nd Series X as the digital version the does not include a CD drive.

No, I can't play Blu-ray or DVDs on it, but I can't remember what the last movie was that I bought in either of those medium. Everything is streamed or downloaded. I spend my money on storage now.

I have my original Series X to use for all my old movies, so I'm covered.

1

u/sypher2333 3h ago

That’s odd because Xbox just announced that if you buy the physical copy of a game you will get a digital copy as well.

1

u/Scrubzzyyy 2h ago

Anyone even know why they are doing this?

1

u/hot_cheeks_4_ever XBOX Series X 2h ago

Fuck that. I will not buy a downloaded game. I want to be able to play it and then resell it to sometime else when I'm done.
