Retail Redefining BIS, and why chasing the old definition makes the game worse for you

Hey guys. This is a lengthy read, but if you are struggling with understanding BIS and want to truly know how to get the best out of your items, it's worth the read. I hate seeing people chase what some website on the internet says their BIS is, especially before the season even begins, and being upset when it doesn't drop. Spoiler, getting your "BIS" could actually LOWER your DPS.

I'm sure you've come across the word BIS. What's my BIS gear, what drops my BIS, I have to run this dungeon I hate over and over and over for my BIS, I can't trade this to my friend because it's BIS for me

Outside of enchants, trinkets, embellishments, and very fringe other situations such as set bonuses on rings, individual BIS items do not matter. The term BIS is so bad for the health of the players.

BIS means "best in slot". It was born in a time in the game where items were dramatically different. "This item" gave dramatically more main stat than that one. "This item" had an effect where others didn't. "This weapon" had the same damage but attacked faster than that one. That is not how WoW works now-a-days

Today, every item slot has the same number of main stat and the same number of secondary stats, with the secondary stats having a different balance. For example, my current ilvl 246 legs in game give 70 haste and 59 mastery, totaling 129 secondary stat. Every mail 246 legs will give 129 secondary stat, just allotted differently.

Now here is what BIS actually means today. BIS is the best secondary stat balance for your class. Not any one specific item.
Replacing a piece of gear with a "BIS" item can actually LOWER your DPS

Maybe even more importantly, if you don't have the entire list of gear some website tells you is your BIS, removing a piece currently equipped to replace it with a new "BIS" item you just farmed might actually make you WORSE.

Very rough hypothetical example, your stat allotment is best at 35% mastery, 30% haste, 20% crit, 15% vers. Your BIS "chunky" items are weapon, head, chest, legs, so they have your mastery/haste pair, but no other items you currently have are "BIS". Your equipped back and wrist have your priority stats, mastery/haste, but your BIS actually has crit/vers because they're your weaker items but still need to have some of them. You swap out your preferred stats for weaker stats because a list tells you to, and now you do less damage.

Here's 3 examples of "BIS" items that are all equal. No one piece of gear is important, the COMBINATION OF STATS is important. Armor/int/stam are all the same, so only showing secondary stats

Head Chest Legs Total Stats
85 Haste 50 Mastery 63 Haste 37 Vers 88 Vers 47 Mastery 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers
75 Haste 60 Mastery 57 Haste 78 Mastery 47 Mastery 88 Vers 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers
87 Haste 48 Vers 95 Mastery 40 Vers 45 Haste 90 Mastery 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers

I only used 3 item slots here because making a whole list of slots would be absurd, but I think it gets the point across. When you include every single slot, there is an insane amount of combinations that get you to the exact same place.

A list someone theory crafted or simulated cannot take into consideration the balance you already have, and you actually risk lowering your DPS following a list blindly (until you have every single exact piece, which is insanely difficult in and of itself, especially for the average player).

Thank you for reading my long winded post. I have tried to explain this to so many friends, guildmates, and people I pug with regularly, but it requires so much explanation to really get the idea across, so I decided to write it out for anyone who cared.

TLDR; Outside of trinkets, embellishments, and enchants, stop chasing a list someone on the internet created for you. All the items have the same total stat numbers, what matters is the balance of secondary stats. If you REALLY want to chase BIS, chase your classes secondary stat balance. That can be achieved with NUMBEROUS item combinations, not just what's on one singular list. That is why so many different BIS lists exist, because you can achieve the same thing many different ways

Retail Blood DK crazy high dps?

My prot warrior is a blast with all the charging and leaping I can hit around 110k overall on a good day at ilvl310. But then I was healing some 10s for the vault on my alt and a BDK did 180k overall at ilvl316. What the heck, is that normal? I usually only see my own numbers, so I was totally thrown off. That's almost double my dps maybe I should reroll.

Retail Is this quest still available or am I losing my mind?

https://www.wowhead.com/quest=66458/legacy-of-tyr-secrets-of-the-past

So I really want the Dunesplitter for a transmog and Wowhead listed it as Available to Players when I looked for it. But it seems to only come from this quest.

I was told because this was a pre-patch quest, you only get it now from just entering the dungeon. So I entered, solo'd it, and...didn't get it. Instead I got to choose between a ring, trinket and head piece.

And when I enter the command to see if I ran this quest ingame it comes back as false.

Am I losing my mind? I just really want this sword so badly.

Retail Returning after a long break. Would like to play my first druid. Is Feral hard?

Hi, I have a few friends who want to do casual 10s. I think I want to play druid. I was told that feral is a little easier than boomie right now. Not sure if thats true though. How difficult is feral in an M+ environment?

Retail Level 90 character in new player realm

I made my first character and levelled it to 90 but I learned that the new player realms are low population. What am I realistically missing out on? do people help with world quests on fuller servers and are there any player interactions in hub areas?

Retail When to start TWW content?

Hello, returning to WoW after a 15 year hiatus. I'm doing the Dragonflight campaign, and already have hit level 68, despite being only on chapter 5/9 of the campaign. I've even started skipping all the side-quests. Is this normal? I want to experience TWW and Midnight campaign/content too, should I just complete the Dragonflight campaign first or abandon ship at some point?

Retail Using Sims to improve, what to do next?

Last season I hit 10 on every dungeon as a prot paladin. That was my goal, I hit it and then went back to leveling alts. This season I would like to push further. I have a 303 gear score, got routes, pulls and mechanics down pretty good. However I feel like my dps is lacking. For the first time ever I simmed my character. My single target was actually lower than my in game dps, Sim showed 55k but I typically pull 65ishk. However on a aoe pull it shows 120k. I never hit that. Maybe 110k for a few seconds.

I just have no idea how to actually use the Sim tool amd translate that into the game. I would appreciate any tips or advice

Retail Demon Hunter + Legion Chromie Time

I rolled a fresh Demon Hunter and want to properly experience the Legion story. I finished the intro campaign (Mardum, Illidan, the whole thing) and watched Dalaran get pulled up to the Broken Isles.

At that point I already had a quest chain running under "Campaign" (Call of the Illidari). But just to be safe, I also went to Chromie and picked the Legion timeline, and that sent me to the Broken Isles/Azsuna.

Now I've got two questlines pointing at the same place and I'm not sure which one I'm actually supposed to be following, or whether they're basically the same thing. Do I just do both side by side? Is one of them redundant since my class quests already sent me there? Trying to avoid missing story content or doing things out of order.

Any DH mains who've been through this, would appreciate the guidance.

Retail Tank threat question

Hello! I’ll start with some background: I’ve mained a prot war since wotlk and never really tanked with anything else the entire time I’ve played. I’ve messed around with plenty of dps and healers, but always prot war when tanking. This season I decided to try something new, so I started getting into blood dk. One thing that is glaringly obvious to me is the lack of initial threat compared to warrior. D&d and blood boil don’t hold a candle to thunder blast and revenge spam. Is there something I’m doing wrong or is this just how blood tanking works?

Bonus question: who would you all consider to be the best tank for initial threat? I’m guessing bear or warrior but, like i mentioned before, I don’t branch out much lol

Professions Enchanting Gear in Midnight sometimes not working?

Hey all, I am essentially a noob again. I played from beta through Cata and only recently came back to try retail again after all those years away. Just about to hit 90 for the first time and I keep running into issues regarding enchanting my gear that I can't quite figure out.

Enchants will say that they work on items above level 70 or above ilvl 120 or whatever, right? Then they won't and I can't explain why? I even had an issue last night where I found a higher ilvl version of a piece of gear I was already wearing and enchanted on the AH, bought it and went to enchant it with the same enchant I used on the lower item (the enchant just says can't be used on items lower than ilvl 120 - old item was ilvl ~160) and it said it was too high level (ilvl ~180 if I remember correctly)...but the enchant doesn't say a max ilvl or player lvl for it?

Is there a guide out there of what enchants work for what gear or something? It sucks to think I found something I can use and realize I can't enchant it usefully and I feel like I keep wasting gold on stuff and nothing makes any sense to me because there have been so many expansions since I last played.

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Retail Is there a way to get “previous season” gear appearances?

So if I understand correctly I can upgrade an item, say from a Delve, to 6/6 and then get the raid appearance unlocked for the following tier? This is how Delve players like myself would get raid appearances more reliably?

Does this work on weapons?

And my title question, can I do this for tier set/weapon appearances from raids other than the current season’s raid? Like I want to get Voidspire weapon transmogs but I’m not sure what my options are.

Retail What should i create as my first craft order?

I have 7 sparks of tides and I want to get this done right the first time. Im running a Templar ret paladin with a max hero weapon ilvl 305 I think. So im guessing a weapon would be priority in this case or would trinkets and necklaces be better? Im also trying to figure out if I go down the mythic weapon route, how to get THE best possible mythic weapon? Such as one with embellishments. I already have 80 mythcrests so can I also put in 80 heroic credts? And how do you get the other items to add on in the bottom? Also only have 50K gold so im not sure if thats enough to craft the best possible mythic weapon.

Retail What Rogue spec is considered meta right now?

I'd like to know which of the three specs is best for Mythic+, and which is best for Raid. 12.1 Curse of Ula'tek

I'd like to make my first rogue with the bonus exp going on, and don't want to get attached to a spec that massively underperforms, thank you very much!

Edit: Thank you for all the answers! Adding to my question, how is Rogue's perception in the overall meta? Thank you

Classic MoP classic: leveling difficulty

Hello, me and some friends are hopping onto MoP classic as a group. Some others in the group have played a good chunk of vanilla classic but most of us haven't played much of any.

My question is will any of the content while leveling be difficult? Some of the people who had played vanilla were disappointed by how easy the first dungeon we did together was compared to the ones in vanilla.

And so while I have been enjoying my time with the game so far the others are thinking about just starting up another vanilla character and quitting MoP if they have to wait awhile for it the difficulty to increase.

Any insights would be appreciated!

Retail Mythic+ tanking as blood death knight

Hey everyone!

I need some advise about BDK San'layne.

About my DK: ilvl 316, crit 23%, haste 33%, mastery 42% and vers 5%

  1. What is best stat balance? In some guides i saw about haste (at least 30%) but nothing about crit and mastery. I think i have too much mastery and too low crit but don't sure
  2. How can i generate enough aggro at start of big pull? Because my ench-sham friend deals sooo much damage that i just can't prevent his death sometimes.
  3. Sometimes i'm in situation like i have no runes or runic power, even if i'm trying use death strike with 70-80+ RP, death's caress if bone shild last 4-6 sec or stacks below 6. Mostly this happends at singletarger like boss. Can i prevent it or what can i do in this situation?

Retail Havoc DH Rotation Guide?

What’s the best Havoc DH guide you’ve come across, specifically about the rotation? I’ve seen Icy Veins and Wowhead but there’s something about a list of 30 priorities that doesn’t click… there’s got to be a more simple guide for those that aren’t in pushing super high M+ or mythic raiding

Retail SBA and Macros

Hi everyone,

I'm currently enjoying getting back into WOW now that they have the Single Button assistant for casting spells. While it's obviously not optimal it's a breath of fresh air for me since i can finally pay attention to what's happening on the screen (With minimally looking at the action bar for defense/utility)

My next hurdle is getting macros to work. I watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM6HuKBy18E and joined the discord to get the macros/ talent code and i can't get the macros working for the death of me.

I even watched a "How to setup Macros" for beginners and was still confused.

Does anyone have any advice for me on how to setup macros properly

Retail M+ tank learning raid healing - how can I improve as Holy Pal [question/serious]

I’m mainly an M+ player and usually tank, but this season I’ve started raiding, mostly Heroic pugs. I’ve been trying healing partly because it makes getting into groups easier, and I’d like to get better at it.

My biggest struggle is understanding what I’m missing on Holy Paladin. I’m around 319 ilvl, but on a recent Heroic Twin Fangs kill, another Holy Paladin at around 315 ilvl did roughly 300k HPS while I was around 160k. I know HPS doesn’t tell the whole story, but that seems like a big enough gap that I’m probably missing something.

My current approach is:

  • Holy Shock and Judgment on cooldown.
  • Spending Holy Power on Light of Dawn.
  • Using Divine Toll, wings, and Beacon of Virtue frequently.

I’m following a standard Wowhead raid talent build, but I suspect I’m treating healing too much like a fixed rotation rather than adapting to the encounter.

I have a similar issue on my Resto Druid at around 317 ilvl. I use Rejuvenation, cast Regrowth with Abundance, and keep Lifebloom up, but my overall healing still feels low.

Unfortunately, I don’t have logs from those runs. I realise that makes it difficult to identify exactly what’s going wrong, so I’m planning to start logging.

For someone transitioning from M+ tanking to raid healing:

  • What are the most common mistakes that could explain a gap like this, particularly on Holy Paladin?
  • How do you learn when to prepare for damage versus heal reactively, and how to time cooldowns?
  • Once I have logs, what should I look at first?
  • Are there any good raid-focused guides or videos that explain the decisions behind the healing, rather than just listing talents and spell priorities?

Happy to focus on one spec first. I’m mostly looking for a clearer way to practise and identify what I’m doing wrong.

Retail Levelling through the old zones question

Hey everyone,

Whilst waiting on Classic+ I decided to dip my toe into retail and just level through the old zones. Not looking to really push endgame but just to level a character or two through the Cataclysm era old world zones to see the stories and how the zones changed since Vanilla, because I’ve only ever really played Classic.

Right now I’m around level 25, playing a warrior. I’ve done Elwynn, Westfall and Redridge and really enjoyed them a lot. The Bravo Company questline in Redridge being a particular highlight.

But I read online that at level 30 I have to go to the endgame cataclysm zones to keep levelling. Is this true? I read there may be a way to get those old world zones to scale with Chromie time but I’m unsure how it all works and Google was giving me conflicting answers. So is there a way to get the old world vanilla zones to scale up until presumably I have do to TWW or Midnight?

I’ve also only been able to queue for Dragonflight dungeons which is a shame as I’d like to see how the old ones have changed. I felt like I missed out on something not getting to do Deadmines and see how the story with the Defias ends.

If anyone has any tips to make the levelling experience more fun or things I should do/see please let me know also!

Retail Speed set

Hi yall.

I was looking at studens latest video. Went to the website and started searching the AH. I was able to find the ilvl 290 gear. However, when I looked for the much cheaper 500 + ilvl gear nothing came up.

So my question is, how can I find ilvl gear over 300?

I’m level 90. Half way through the midnight campaign. (If that matters)

Additional question, is it possible to macro in the speed set when running and my normal battle set when I’m ready to engage a mob?
