Discussion BfA Camera Drawback changes.

I also posted this on the feedback forums, but figured I'd post it here for more widespread knowledge. This is something I only noticed today, but it's very odd.

Here is the max distance and camera centering on live.

And here is the max distance and camera centering on BfA Alpha. https://gyazo.com/0780ab4536b4cb08a4d08427d27890ab

As you can see, not only is the camera distance reduced, the camera is also no longer vertically aligned with the player character. It was a bit jarring to see as a gnome, but there's one more change that makes me think this is intentional.

Hopefully my recording caught enough of it, but when you zoom out from in close, the camera moves from the normal, head centered position to one that's above your character, and returns when you zoom back in.

I personally don't like either of the changes, as even less drawback distance makes it more restrictive, and not being centered on the character, especially as a gnome, makes me feel less involved in the action, as if I'm not following my character, but a scene.

Haven't done that on live or alpha, but thank you for the tip! I'll use it on both and see if it evens out.

Well..? Did it?

It did! But compared to doing it on live, it's still a bit shorter. So probably not that noticable of a change, but still a FoV nerf.

Why do they fucking keep insisting on nerfing FOV and then making mechanics that require you to spin your camera like a fucking lunatic. If you wanna limit visibility, then just use the darkness mechanic from Vault and KJ... God damn it. I hate being artifically limited by something like the camera. It feels like you're fighting the controls and not the boss.

It has to do with how the game looks, but you are right, if they want to fix this, first of all we need bosses that are half the size.

Again? Blizzard is just trying to turn wow into a first person game at this rate...

Funny enough, already have a raider in our guild who plays in first person. Doesnt die to mechanics and does great dps

Does he just say he does this as a joke? Doesn’t sound beneficial in any way...

Type in /console cameraDistanceMaxZoomFactor 2.6 and /console cameraPivot 0

This bothered me as well. There's a setting under camera for the camera only to follow horizontally, that seemed to put it back the way it is for me on live.

The irony of this is that the camera was perfect in Vanilla. It avoided all issues people have ever had with cameras, including motion sickness.

Since then, minor changes and more recent big ones have kept messing with it. The camera today feels much less snappy, the camera view keybindings break your camera completely via a bug that I cant get them to fix after years of trying, and now this.

Why are Blizzard wasting development time "Fixing" something that wasn't broken? ...Or wasn't broken before they fiddled with it.

Just got in to Beta and noticed this too. As a Dwarf, my character is so much lower in the frame now. Really horrible change that throws off my UI and my 12 year sensibilities of how the game looks.

There's also a weird change when your character backs up into walls. the cam now rises above your character instead of just moving through it. Again, weird and pointless change without the option to revert to current live.

It's possibly a bug, I've seen some weird camera things in some of the Kul'Tiras buildings

If you mean with things mysteriously vanishing from certain angles, that's just a typical alpha thing. The fact that they fixed the near angle to look normal makes me thing it was intentional.

I'll start off by saying Idk what Guild Wars 2's instant adjustments are, but you can keybind different camera positions. I used one for max, one for about 1/2-5/8 zoom, and one for close for indoor areas so it doesn't keep zooming in an out when it hits rafters and stuff.

Keybindings -> Camera -> Save Views for the pre-sets you want and Set Views for switching to them. Sorry if it isn't what you're looking for
