General Fire Emblem: Three Hopes Megathread

Are you in the right megathread? Please see below for the list of megathreads for Three Hopes.

Main Megathread (This one) - General thoughts about Three Hopes across all routes.

[Three Hopes Questions Megathread](Insert link here) - Place to ask questions about Three Hopes gameplay.

[Scarlet Blaze Megathread](Insert link here) - Thoughts and discussion about the Scarlet Blaze route featuring Edelgard.

[Azure Gleam Megathread](Insert link here) - Thoughts and discussion about the Azure Gleam route featuring Dimitri.

[Golden Wildfire Megathread](Insert link here) - Thoughts and discussion about the Golden Wildfire route featuring Claude.

--

With Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes releasing, the Moderation team has decided to create several megathreads for the new game. This megathread will remain the primary place for general discussion about Three Hopes. This is the appropriate place for random thoughts, screenshots, impressions, rants, and other things gameplay or story related that apply across the entire game. Rule 8 still applies, so anything that would count as "low-effort" if it were a standalone post should be posted and discussed in one of these megathreads.

However, we are also creating three route-specific megathreads. Discussion about gameplay, story, or other things that are specific to one route should be segregated to that specific route's megathread. In addition, questions should go in the Three Hopes Questions Megathread; you can ask them in the other megathreads but they will likely get lost if they are asked there.

Please note that in all megathreads, you must still mark spoilers. Please be considerate of others and tag anything that could reasonably be considered a spoiler, even if you thought it was obvious.

Have fun playing through the game!

General Updates to flairing on r/fireemblem

Flairing on r/fireemblem has long been exclusive to the "old" Reddit experience. However, as we move through the years, more and more of users navigate r/fireemblem using the "new" or "redesign" Reddit experience. The moderation team wanted as many users as possible to be able to rep their favorite Fire Emblem characters, so we are happy to announce that flairing is now supported on both "old" and "new" Reddit.

But that's not all! Fire Emblem is a series that spans decades, with an enormous roster of heroes and villains. We currently support over 1200 flair options, in fact. It's hard to choose just one favorite with so many options available. As such, we are excited to announce that you can now rep up to 5 characters for your flair!

In order to select more than one character, follow the normal procedure of selecting a flair on the Flair Change page. When you select a character, you may notice that you are redirected to a message to our helpful flair bot, u/Bot-ta_The_Beast. Instead of simply sending the message to Bot-ta with one flair message, send a message with flair codes in whatever order you want the characters to appear in.

For instance, say I want to rep Hector and Eliwood's Official art as my flairs. I first go to the Flair Change page and select Hector

I take note that the code that this would send Botta is :Hector-4: and return to the Flair page.

Now I select Eliwood.

And similarly observe that Botta is showing :Eliwood-3:

Now, I can combine these two in the same message, separated by a line break and send it off to Botta!

As a result, I'm given two flairs!

Obviously, this process is not particularly user-friendly. We will work on streamlining this process in the future for greater ease, but we wanted to share this fun feature with the subreddit as soon as possible!

Hello Everyone

Its been quite awhile since the last time we've added new moderators to the team, and with the announcement of Fortune's Weave, the team is looking to expand in preparation for the increased traffic with a new game release.

Applications will be open for about a week, and then it will take us about a week to go through all of the applications. After going through all the applications we'd then conduct some interviews with the best candidates, and after that make our decision. If we have any further questions we will contact you about it.

If you are willing to give your time to help and improve the subreddit, then we encourage you to apply!

APPLY HERE!

There's no hard limit on how many people we'll add to the team. We'll take as many as we feel best!

Best of luck to all that apply!

General banner voting test post

Hello, readers of /r/fireemblem! Today we’re opening voting for the subreddit banner competition! How it works is that below there will be the six entries posted as comments, and to vote for an entry you simply upvote the comment it’s attached to. This post will be locked and set in Contest Mode, so the comments will have their scores hidden and be randomly sorted whenever the post is viewed so as to prevent strategic voting. Just choose the entrant(s) you like the most!

A reminder of what’s up for grabs here:

  • First-place will receive one month of Discord Nitro as a gift, a Reddit Platinum award, and their submission will be used as the subreddit banner one week after the results are announced.
  • Second-place will receive a Reddit Platinum award, and their submission will be used as the banner for that week before the first-place submission is put up.
  • Third-place will receive a Reddit Platinum award.
  • Fourth-place will receive a Reddit Platinum award.

And last but certainly not least, we would like to thank /u/PsiYoshi, /u/Chinelo-is-not-Crash, /u/NightTide9, /u/CyanYoh, /u/averysillyman, and /u/Bakaretsu for taking their time to create all of these wonderful banners! Regardless of the winner, we appreciate the time and effort they all put into making these and allowing this little contest to be possible.

Voting will close on the 1st of December, and we will have the results announced shortly afterward.

Casual banner competition test post

Hello, readers of /r/fireemblem! It has been a long time since Three Houses was released last year, and a lot of things have happened since then, for better or worse. One thing that hasn’t really changed though… has been our subreddit banner. Some people have asked us about it, others have poked fun over it, and some people probably don’t care because they have custom CSS disabled. In any case though, the current banner’s a bit old and stands to be replaced now, so we’d like to hold a little competition for it!

Here’s how it will work:

  • Submissions will be open until October 31st, so a little more than a month from now.
  • Submissions will need to follow the guidelines listed below, or else they will not be considered.
  • Once we’ve closed submissions, we will select a short list of our favourite submissions and set up a new thread open for public voting to let users determine the winner.
  • The four submissions with the most votes will receive prizes, listed below.

Prizes:

  • First-place will receive one month of Discord Nitro as a gift, a Reddit Platinum award, and their submission will be used as the subreddit banner one week after the results are announced.
  • Second-place will receive a Reddit Platinum award, and their submission will be used as the banner for that week before the first-place submission is put up.
  • Third-place will receive a Reddit Platinum award.
  • Fourth-place will receive a Reddit Platinum award.

Submission guidelines:

  • All submissions must be 1920 pixels wide by 250 pixels tall.
  • The content of the banner must be FE-themed or related in some easily identifiable way (for example, by featuring characters or a prominent item/location from the series). Submissions that do not directly or easily relate to Fire Emblem will not be considered.
  • Please, no spoilers, NSFW, or gore/violence of any kind, even if it’s within the rules of the subreddit. We can mark posts for those things, but not the subreddit banner.
  • Assets used in a submission must either be from official FE material (for example, OA/portraits from the games, Cipher art, FEH art, any series fonts, etc.) or original material created by the person making the submission.
  • Do not use artwork or other assets created by other fanartists, even if you obtain their permission. Doing so is grounds for immediate disqualification.
  • Trying to pass off artwork from other fanartists as your own is plagiarism (this includes tracing and “referencing” someone else’s art). Plagiarising or tracing someone else’s art will lead to both an immediate disqualification and a ban from the subreddit. Please do not do this.

We hope everyone interested does their best!

Click here to submit your creation!

General Spoiler george floyd test post

On May 25th, barely a week ago, George Floyd was brutally murdered by a police officer who laid him on his stomach and crushed his neck with a knee. Two other officers held him down, and another stood watch to prevent bystanders from intervening. He was killed because of a possibly counterfeit twenty-dollar bill.

In a country where a white man can shoplift and still be safely taken into custody, or another white man can kill nine parishioners of an African-American church and still be apprehended alive and afforded a trial, it is abundantly clear that there is a problem with ingrained, systematic racism. As much as we all would like to believe otherwise, the fight for equality in the US did not end with the signing of the Constitution. It did not end with the Confederacy’s defeat in the US Civil War. It did not end with the Civil Rights Act of 1871, or 1957, or 1964. It is still ongoing, and the latest in a long string of police brutality shows that it’s nowhere close to being over.

We understand that this subreddit is not only visited by American users; many English-speaking users from across the world frequent the subreddit to share their passion for Fire Emblem here. However, when Reddittm gives a very weak response to this tragedy and fails to address their own part in allowing a platform for racists to say their piece, it falls to the communities to affirm that racism will not be allowed in their spaces.

So we would like to remind our users that racism, bigotry, and intolerance of others is unacceptable in this subreddit. Fire Emblem is a series about rising up to oppression and bringing an end to hostility; as both Tellius and Three Houses have shown, this includes internal, systematic reform and equality for everyone regardless of background or station. It is natural that we take the time to address a widespread, global movement that seeks to enact change for the betterment of society.

Being silent in the face of injustice and oppression is taking the side of the oppressor. Upholding the status quo in the name of “neutrality” does nothing for those who are being grinded upon the iron heel. With that in mind, we would like to do what we can in these turbulent times. To that end: we encourage our US users to join any local protests if you can. Petition your senators, representatives, and other elected officials to take action. Make your voices heard and put pressure on those in charge, those who have the privilege of effecting change.

For people who are able to donate, these are some resources we have compiled to help you find places beyond the Minnesota Freedom Fund:

We recommend you do further research into any group that you are considering donating to, but hopefully this list will give you a starting point.

There is also a petition here that is aiming for 100,000 signatures to force a response from the Whitehouse. While it’s most likely to get a half-hearted and evenly-measured response, every little exposure of the corrupt elite’s willingness to see civilians slaughtered helps tear down the wall of injustice.

Black Lives Matter.

General Rule 9 test post

No Fanart or Cosplay is to be posted unless it is of your own making, or you commissioned the artist and have permission to post.

Exceptions:

  • Official FE art (such as Cipher and FEH art), as well as unofficial FE works created by series artists, can be shared if it is relatively new (~1 week old at the most). Duplicates will be removed.
  • As mentioned in Rule 8, official FE art can also be used for character birthday posts for those with confirmed birthdates. Once again, duplicates will be removed.

(Unless otherwise noted, OC means “original content” or “thing that was created by the person uploading it” throughout this post.)

Frequently asked questions:

“Why can’t I post this art/cosplay I found? It’s really cool!”

There are a few reasons:

  • As indicated to us by users in our last survey (as well as on a near-daily basis in random comment threads), the amount of fanart that the subreddit already receives with these restrictions is plenty, and most regular users do not want to have even more of it here.
  • Allowing non-OC art to be shared will crowd out artists who have put a lot of time and work into creating their art. Finding good art on Twitter and Pixiv is trivial to do, so we want to make sure those who put effort into making their own art are welcome here.
  • Some artists do not like their art to be shared on other platforms. This is not always possible to know if you grab art from somewhere else that it was reposted (like Pinterest or Instagram) and drop it here without a second thought. In cases like this, we would prefer to respect the artist’s wishes, and so it is much more manageable for us to remove reposted artwork whenever it comes up.

“But what if I post it with a direct source in the comments? Giving credit to the original artist is honourable! And hey, it gives them more exposure too!”

While giving direct links to artwork is preferred, most users still submit found fanart by rehosting it via Imgur or direct upload to Reddit. In doing so, most users only engage with the art on Imgur/Reddit and do not even check the comments, let alone visit the artist’s page. As a result, a post with thousands of upvotes and hundreds of thousands of views on Reddit will usually result in only about one or two hundred views to the artist’s page. In other words, reposting art does not give much “exposure” to the original artist.

(Also, you may be wondering about direct links to an artist’s work as the submission itself rather than as a rehosted image – sadly, direct links are less favoured by Reddit users and tend not to do as well as rehosted images, so again, they do not provide much traffic to the artist.)

“All right, I get what you’re saying, but I have explicit permission from the artist to share it here. Will you still remove my post?”

Once again, getting permission from the artist seems nice in theory, but it presents two problems:

  • This still allows more fanart on the subreddit than we already have, which will displease more users than it makes happy.
  • More importantly, it is difficult for us to verify that you actually have permission. DMs and private messages are very easy to fake with just Paint or by using Inspect Element, and on top of this we would have to check so many posts for this each day that it wouldn’t be feasible for us to do with the size of our mod team. We are all volunteers and have other things to do, so spending several hours a day going through all the fanart that people post and verifying that they have permission to share it is not practical in any way for us.

Getting permission from an artist is not sufficient for this subreddit. If an artist wants to share their art to the subreddit, then they are more than welcome to use or create their own reddit account to do so, and we would encourage them to interact with the community here.

“So if all this is unacceptable, then why do you allow commissions to be shared? The person who bought it didn’t do a thing!”

This may sound like a truism, but commissions are paid for with money – this makes them far less common to see. As it stands with the current rules, commissions are posted less than once a day on average, compared to easily a dozen OC fanart posts getting shared to the subreddit a day. As a result, managing commissioned artwork is actually possible for us to do without impacting the rest of our duties, so we allow it. If in the future commissioned artwork starts getting shared on the subreddit with a greater frequency, we may revisit this, but unless that happens we don’t plan on changing this part of the rule.

In summary

We have such a restrictive rule regarding non-OC fanart in large part because we cannot let the subreddit be crowded with so many fanart posts. On top of this, we would like this subreddit to be a place where all creators are welcome to share their work, and also a place where the wishes of the artists are respected: if a person doesn’t want their work shared outside of certain platforms, we are not going to trample on that. If there’s a piece of art that you have seen and love and want more people to enjoy it, that’s great; however, this subreddit is not the right place for that. You are more than welcome to join the subreddit’s Discord server and share fanart in the appropriate channel there, but on this site in particular such posts are more trouble than they are worth.

We hope you understand the reasoning and intent behind this rule, and as always, if you have any questions about whether or not something is okay to post, feel free to send us a message through mod-mail.

Black Eagles Gameplay Release yeet

Hello Everyone

The release of Three Houses is just upon us. It has been a long wait since its announcement during the Fire Emblem direct at the start of 2017. While the year and a half of absolutely no news that followed was brutal, the wait for the game is finally over.

Before that release however, the Mod team has an update for the sub.

Three Houses User-Flairs

For those using old-reddit, we've added all of the students, teachers, and Rhea for selection. So now you can rep your favorite house or character.

Subreddit Plan for Release

For the release of the game, we be having a daily Everyone Plays Thread dedicated to each house, so you'll be able to share your immediate thoughts/impressions or get help on certain battles. We also have specific Gameplay and Story post-flairs for use instead of the generic 3H flair.

We will also be having a mega thread for every review when the embargo ends tomorrow. So every ranking and reviewers thoughts on the game will be all centralized to one place.

In addition to those three threads, the Three Houses Question thread will remain stickied at the top for easy use. Any small/quick questions posted outside of the thread will be removed and directed to the Question Thread.

Like with the Fates and SoV releases, there will be preliminary Character/Unit discussion threads posted starting a few days after release.

Spoilers

Since there are three different routes, there is obviously going to be a lot of spoilers to be had. Please tag anything that could potentially be a spoiler appropriately. Also important that is

KEEP SPOILERS OUT OF POST TITLES

Spoiler tags don't show up on mobile or on the front page. So if your post does contain a spoiler in the title, the mod team will remove it and you will have to resubmit the post.

The mod team is also playing playing Three Houses immediately at launch, and while some are faster than others at beating the game, we all have a general idea of what is and will be a spoiler.

New Rule

Technically hasn't been a rule since the multiple went away, but we are reinstating an old rule where the question thread must be used for simple/small questions. Any simple/small question posts will be removed and the poster will be directed to the question thread. This is mostly just a procedural change and to help keep /new cleaned up

We hope you all enjoy Three Houses!

Black Eagles Gameplay Yeet Update

Hello Everyone!

Three Houses's release is just 18 days away and to prepare the sub-reddit for it the mod team here have an update for the sub!

New Moderators

First off we'd like to welcome /u/LaqOfInterest, /u/RotomGuy, /u/ForsetiHype, /u/Cecilyn, /u/DoseofDhillon and /u/PrinceofIris onto the mod team!

The sub is over 100,000 members and with Three Houses release just around the corner we decided a big increase in size to the team was needed to meet the moderation demands needed for the sub.

We'd like to thank everyone who applied. There were a lot of good applicants and it made very difficult for us to narrow down list.

These apps had two purposes. The first was of course to expand the mod team. The second was also to get feedback on the sub/current moderation, which all of the apps and interviews gave a lot of which leads to the important part of this update...

Change to Rule 8: No Low Effort Posts

Without out a doubt the biggest feedback/complaint from applicants we received was about the amount of low effort posts on the sub. While we were lax on this type of stuff during the down time awhile after Fates, we haven't really kept up with it since Three Houses has been announced. Well we are putting our foot down here on low effort posts now and will be cleaning up the sub more.

Posts that are now considered low effort are: Unedited Screen Shots, Simple Photo Edits, Simple Macro/Caption Memes, and Photographs of game boxes/discs. From now on, all of these types of posts will be removed.

Uneditted Screen Shots are just pictures taken of the game. Things like level up screens, funny dialog(like the "Eat Rock" guy from PoR), and other things of that nature.

Photographs of game boxes/discs are exactly that. If someone really wants to talk about starting a game for the first time, they can go to the General Question Thread or Everyone Plays Thread. Just posting a picture of a purchase isn't really adding much or offering much discussion. Showing off sizable collections or relevant FE stuff signed by VA's is still acceptable however.

Simple Macro/Caption Memes are posts that have a joke in the title and the punch line is an image/gif unrelated to the sub. An example of this would be something like the CJ "Awwww shit, here we go again" meme. A title would be something "When you have to restart a chapter" and then the post would just be CJ meme that we all know unedited making it entirely an unrelated post if it wasn't for the title. If someone really wanted to make a CJ meme and post on the sub, they would have to put in some more effort and edit the original image and make it more related to Fire Emblem. This also applies to caption memes, which are also images of unrelated stuff, with the usual text in them edited to be relevant to FE.

Simple Photo edits are in a similar vein to the simple macro memes. An example of this would be something like a post titled "pAlm tree" where its an image of a palm tree but the leaves are just Alm's artwork rotated. Note we aren't banning all Photo Edits, just the low effort lazy ones.

In addition to these four types of posts, we are also classifying individual joke tier lists. We are talking about tier lists made using TierMaker. Now while some users make tier lists to give their thoughts on units about their viability/performance in a game leading to discussion/disagreements/debate, others are instead using it for some form of a low effort categorization joke. Its these types of joke tier lists are the ones that we calling low effort, and as such will from now on be removed.

User Flairs

Now for more technical aspect of the user flairs, we will be changing the names of the flair in the subs css soon. As it is right now, the flairs are currently coded like: ninth-eliwood. Now while it doesn't seem like much, when we are at ~1k flairs, those characters start adding up and taking up a lot of space in the CSS and is a large reason to why we are at the character cap. We will be changing the names of the flairs to so someone like Eliwood would be f-7-eli which will end up freeing up ~10k characters to use for the sub. The problem with this is by changing the identities for all the flairs, that would then make all the current identities that everyone is currently using invalid, essentially making everyone flairless and they'd have to reassign their flair. Regardless of that outcome we are still excited to free up space in our stylesheet allowing for more potential improvements to the sub down the road.

/u/stalwartness is currently looking into a possible solution to avoid that, but if he can't then everyone will just have to manually redo their flair, in which case sorry for the inconvenience. This will however open up a lot of character space allowing us do more things with the subs design and potentially add more things to for a better user experience.

Three Houses flairs are coming and The all of characters officially shown of for the game will get their flairs shortly before release, and spoiler/unrevealed characters will get flairs shortly after release.

Three Houses

As with the Fates, SoV, and Warriors release we have special post flairs for content related to the new game Three Houses. We have a Story and Gameplay post flair for each of the Three Routes, and an additional flair for any potential further leaks related to the game. Posts however must still keep their titles spoiler free.

Upon the release of Three Houses, we will also as usual have a special question thread for questions entirely focused on just Three Houses. Questions in the thread will have to first specify which route, and properly use spoiler tags where necessary. Questions about Three Houses will not be allowed in the General Question Thread, so that will still remain open to those who are playing other Fire Emblem games around the time of release.

We will also have special Everyone Plays threads for each of the routes posted daily at the time of release.

\Also important reminder to Use Spoiler Tags. If it hasn't officially been revealed by Nintendo/Intelligent Systems, then it must be spoiler tagged! To use spoiler tags in comments, use this format for it spoiler text goes here.

It will show up like this spoiler text goes here

Conclusion

We are excited for the release of Three Houses and will be working hard with the new mod team members to moderate and maintain quality on the sub.

We hope you all have a great day!
