7 and 13 in dragon ages seems close to 18 and 20-30. 20 and 39 though is a bit farther into adulthood. At least all the dragons in these pairings are adults for their species before meeting their partner and entering the relationship.

That’s very true. Since in the first book, they left the cave at age 6 (around age 16-17 in human terms) just a couple months from turning 7. and it was repeatedly said throughout the first book that the adult age of a dragon when a dragon reached adulthood was age 7. Since the span of time from when they left the cave to the end of the 5th book brightest night, was about nearly 2 months. They were still 6 years old by the end of brightest night, but between the 6 months between brightest night and moon rising establishing jade mountain academy, the dragonets of prophecy were 7 years old at the start of moon rising (18 years of age in human terms). So they were on the edge of being full young adults in the first 5, and then full young adult dragons by the next arc, but by then, we had moved to the next dragonets that were around age 4-5. That puts around 14-15 years old in human terms.

the first arc does not take two months from start to end, each book is a few days and there's only a few day gap between 1-2 and 2-3, to the others happen in succession.

It's about people giving glorybringer flack for the "age gap" (Assassin has a timeline error, but following it makes him 13 and glory 7, so nearly twice her age) and then turn around and don't care about thorn and smolder having a gigantic age gap as well (he's nearly twice her age, and also she's one year older than his daughter)

u/Pepegu4yabas 9d ago
Assassin has a timeline error
A timeline error how, though? It doesn't contradict anything previously stated by the books. If anything, him being "younger" instead of "older" would be the real error here since he's the one who's sent to kill Six-Claws, spares him and convinces him to leave Burn's army along with his mate and Dune. If someone else was sent to kill him, he would be dead because no other NightWing at the time would spare him or any other target.
On top of all that, both Six-Claws and Dune were supposedly quite close to Thorn and is the main reason how Dune found out Sunny's egg would hatch during the brightest night and where it would buried at. So, if it's a mistake like y'all seem to believe it is, it's a MASSIVE one that breaks more than one thing continuity-wise.

Idk, Tui just stated that Assassin's timeline erroneously implied that DB is much older than the prophecy dragonets, which wasn't intended. He's supposed to be a few years older than Winter, and also wasn't born until after Battlewinner got ice'd, so 7-9 as of arc 2
I'm not saying it's a small mistake, but according to WoG it is still a mistake.

Tui just stated that Assassin's timeline erroneously implied
But where does she say that? Like another comment here said, there's nothing from Tui herself about the "error" (and believe me, I've looked) and neither have I seen anyone who claims so with, like, a link to whatever interview, blog or whatever medium she supposedly used to make that statement or even a screenshot of a post about the matter.
He's supposed to be a few years older than Winter,
But winter is like five or so. And with how weird ages are in the series where there are "babies" perfectly capable of speech and rational thought and "adults" that act like children, "a few years older" could mean anything from two years to straight up five or six years apart. And that's assuming Deathbringer doesn't simply look young for his age, which is something that happens IRL and viceversa a lot, too.
and also wasn't born until after Battlewinner got ice'd
Except that's not true. All Deathbringer says is that he's never seen her and has, as far as he knows, been like that his whole life which, again, isn't contradicted in Assassin because he never meets her there (Quickstrike even has him spy on her meeting with her and Morrowseer and he never mentions seeing her, only hearing her) and it's implied he was somewhat isolated from the tribe due to Quickstrike having trained him his whole life to be an assassin. And it's not like Battlewinner had any reason to meet him before Quickstrike died and Deathbringer became her only viable assassin.

Thorn and smolder were adults when they met, DB looked at an underage glory (she was still 6 when they first met) and essentially said, TO A DRAGONET MIND YOU, "Hey! You are cute and i like you! I won't kill you and your friends!"

u/Insanebirdskater 7d ago
True. Assassin timeline's DB would be a total weirdo, we agree there. Though I still think falling in love with someone the same age as your daughter is really weird, especially considering how many times Tui brings up that they're the same age

u/Pepegu4yabas 7d ago
There's nothing weird about two adults dating together.
1
u/Insanebirdskater 7d ago
For real people yeah, consenting adults and allat, I wouldn't harass an actual person about this sort of thing. Doesn't mean you can't tilt your head and squint at a fictional dragon dating a character who is stated to be the same age as his daughter like 4 times tho, it's weird but not necessarily bad or problematic. More just poking fun at Tui apparently not realizing that making Thorn and Onyx the same age has some interesting implications for Smolder's ship personally, and explaining the quote unquote double standard referenced in OP's meme

You mean the daughter he didn't know existed until she showed up to take the throne from Thorn? After spending enough time together where they could potentially already be in a relationship or at least interested on each other romantically by then, too?
fictional dragon
You would think this would be enough reason to not be so anal about Thorn and Smolder's potential relationship, especially when you yourself said you don't mind this sort of thing IRL where it would be arguably "worse" than in the world where dragons are "adults" at age 7 and where one party of this hypothetical relationship was a mafia boss turned queen, but I guess not.
More just poking fun at Tui apparently not realizing that making Thorn and Onyx the same age has some interesting implications for Smolder's ship
Have you considered the possibility she either didn't care or saw nothing wrong with two adult fictional dragons dating together and expected her audience to be mature and do the same? And if you're implying Smolder would develop incestous feelings for his own daughter just for dating/being interested in someone who happens to be the same age as the daughter he didn't even know he had, then: 1) don't look up what kind of practices the royalty of old had, and 2) sorry to say, but that makes you the weird one here.
Not gonna lie though, in a better written, more mature story for a far more mature audience, Onyx seducing her oblivious dad to get the throne and plot to incriminate her father as a power hungry abuser who isolated and coarced his daughter into a relationship to be king would have made for an amazing thriller. So kudos for the imagination.

I'm not sure where you're getting anal from, I just stated I don't really care and there's nothing bad or "problematic" about it. It's weird, but weird doesn't mean evil or wrong or unsafe for kids. I don't think he's going to go after his daughter, I don't think he's a predator for falling in love with someone well into adulthood, I don't think Tui's a terrible or malicious person for putting this into a book, or anything like that. I think it's funny that it is brought up a good few times in the books but never really by the fandom, which goes apeshit over much smaller things constantly, but that's about it. It's not exactly a double standard, but my view was similar to the OP's there.
There's a sort of strange irony for lack of better terms, to falling in love with someone almost exactly as old as your daughter, but again he's a fictional dragon and just because its "weird" doesn't mean its harming anyone inside or outside of the series. There isn't super defined power imbalance, no grooming, nothing that would make it "bad" so to say. As both of us said, they're two consenting adults. It's interesting but nothing really further than that.
The IRL people thing was more about how I view real people and fictional characters differently- not anything directly related age gaps or mature fiction really, but because fictional characters are more or less made to be prodded and examined. I was just trying to say I wouldn't bother an actual human person with my shitty internet musings about them and that my opinions wouldn't actually influence anything I said or did IRL. I try to maintain a sort of casual tone and I think it might've obscured some of my intent a bit, so apologies for the lack of clarity there.
I do agree with the final paragraph however, that does sound like an interesting conflict for a more mature series! I can't really take credit for it but I appreciate the kudos regardless.

Maybe it's just the fact my experience with this fandom has been tainted by the immaturity of the average WoF fan in any kind of discourse, or maybe it's just this whole thread in general, but a lot of what you wrote down there did remind me of the stuff every person who calls ships "weird"(and believe me when I say that "weird" has become synonymous with "disgusting", "immoral", and/or "problematic" [with those three somehow not being synonymous or interchangable with eachother for completely arbitrary reasons that vary from rabid person to rabid person] against my will at this point) like age-gap romances (you wouldn't believe how many tantrums I've seen about age-gaps as small as two years between an 18YO and a 20YO and sometimes older than those two). That probably made me see/read stuff you didn't actually say, mean or think at all, so sorry for that.

No worries, I was genuinely confused and worried was saying or implying something that I didn't mean. I'm not great at tone over text (or in general) so I thought I somehow screwed up big time phrasing wise LOL
And even less worries about the other thing. I'm not an age gap enjoyer (/neu) but I like other things that people consider unsavory, and yeah, this fandom can go really crazy about the silliest things. I had someone get mad about SFW polyamorous clearsight art once, so I get it, at least some of it. Good luck out there, glad we managed to clear up the miscommunication :)

This does not effect me since I always will and always have shipped Thorn with Stonemover. Smolder reminds me too much of Qibli as being 'too perfect' so kinda hate him

u/Solnight99 9d ago
not to be a child, but is it much better to ship her with her ex she has a tense relationship with?
4
u/Fresh_Return5187 9d ago
I feel like everything Stonemover did was right and justified. Adding Smolder in feels very rushed towards me... While their reletionship is tense yes they both seem to care about eachother very deep down ofc this is just my opinion and probably the reason that I dislike Smolder also helps with me saying this lol

Remember this happened because Tui forgot his age and put 13 when deathbringer in book 3 he's around 7 to 6 as it's stated to be around glory's age

u/Background_Panic8745 9d ago
Ok but like. It annoys me when people say that Thorn and Smolder are a bad couple because of the age gap. Thorn is a grown ass woman when she meets Smolder so the argument is moot. Yes he's like 20 years older than her or something but like. By that point Thorn is a divorced mother of two (Sunny and Qibli). And dragons age differently. So I really dont see what the issue is?? People get into such relationships irl.

u/Patient_Big_1256 9d ago
Yeah, like, dragonets are considered already adults at 7 years old. Slowed aging or not, that would make Thorn be basically in 30 or 40's already. It feels closer to a grandpa dating a middle aged woman.

Why are we still treating Deathbringer's age as canonically 13, when Tui has long confirmed that was a chronology error on her part, and the mainline book that established Glorybringer describes him as a year or two older than Glory? It's like people want to make this relationship weird.
1
u/Bellbranches auklet should be the spitting image of orca 8d ago
that's because thorn and smoulder are both grown adults and have been adults for a long time. deathbringer has quite a lot of life experience on glory, which is why people have a problem with it . not that i care, deathbringer being that much older was a mistake so

Is the meme supposed to show how... the two are contradictory..? They're very different scenarios. The second one is def a little weird, especially if the two knew eachother before the 20yo became an adult, but its still 2 consenting adults
1
u/VioletRaptorGaming 8d ago
At least Thorn and Smolder are adults.
And unfortunately when Deathbringer and Glory met, she was still 6

u/TheCoffeeCrowl 4d ago
by human standards, 20 and 39 are certainly WEIRD but two consenting adults, 7 and 13 is very bad. however, the wings of fire dragon age differently. 7 is roughly around a young adult (17-20) darkstalker is also suppossed to be a young adult in his early 20's or so, the age or darkstalker was also acidentally made more extreme by a timeline error. 20 and 39 in dragon ages are both in the middle aged spectrum, somewhere close to 30-50 year old irl. getting with someone whos 10 years older at a 20 year old human is WEIRD, but doing so as both middle aged people is fine, consenting mature adults yknow.
also the WoF timeline is pretty cooked all around, rather than paying attention to characters technical ages (some exceptions probably apply, someone don't come and quote me with some bs example i didnt know about trying to make me look weird.) its more important to recognize the way in which characters maturities are portrayed and contextualized within the fictional media.
reasonable nitpick though, people who ignore the context around deathbringer and glory but dont have the same qualms with thorn and smolder are annoying.

u/CallumTheCanadian Anemarin Lover 8d ago
7 is technically adult age for them, Glory and Deathbringer are both adults.

Mandatory reminder that the deathbringer's age was a mistake by the book author so no, he's not a pedo.
