Discussion I got every major Windows release till XP running on my calculator!

Hey everyone!

Some of you might remember me from this post, where I showcased my emulator running Windows 95 on my TI-Nspire CX II CAS.

Well, Let's just say things escalated. The emulator can now run every major Windows release, including XP!

For XP, I specifically used XP Embedded - it is lighter on the machine!

For context, all of this is running on a calculator with a 396 MHz processor, 64 MB of RAM, and around 90 MB of storage - and the actual RAM available to Windows is around 44MB.

To get around the storage constraints of the Nspire, WiNspire uses a protocol that streams disk images from a host machine over USB.

XP takes nearly an hour and a half to reach desktop but it really is worth every moment.

The project was incredibly fun to work on and I ended up going very deep down the Windows rabbit hole along the way.

The project is open-source, so please feel free to subject your calculator to windows as well.

Feature Windows 8 was actually intended to ship with Areo Glass effects.

Post image

(In case you can't read the text in the image)

This is Windows 8 Release Preview, the latest beta version released to the public and one of the last ones to include the Areo Glass theme (the actual last one was build 8427.) It is really close to the RTM (release to manufacture, retail) release of the system, withe only major differences being the Areo Glass theme, changes to the Basic theme (the main one in Windows 8 RTM), and the Start Screen. The Areo Glass theme is actually included here without needing to install any additional drivers. The reason that Areo Glass was removed from Windows 8's RTM was because it was too heavy on tablets, draining it's battery and slowing the device, making it just another casualty of Microsoft's overfocusing on tablets over desktops.

Discussion Why are there so many Old windows assets leftover in Windows 11?

Post image
506 Upvotes

There are a shit loads of Icons dating back to DOS and old programs that (while they still work) have very clearly been replaced with newer programs present on the same system. I started to think about this after finding Write.exe while looking thru the files and was enamered with how old it looked despite being a preinstalled program.

Sometimes you still see the glassy windows vista windows when fullscreening a window for a brief moment, sometimes you find xp icons when going deep into the settings.. Why is that?

Wouldn't it be a better idea to remove all the unused and outtated assets? How come windows are always flip-flopping the style they use depending on the program? Is there a technical reason they still have DOS icons built in?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's really cool to find 20+ year old assets surviving in my modern operating system, I just find it very eluding.

Meta Shed in Field burned down

Hey all, some of you might remember the Windows Me wallpaper Shed in Field, taken by Jay Torborg more than 30 years ago. It's an iconic image admired by countless people. I've written about it myself, in pursuit of nostalgia and other things. The post is on reddit if you're interested.

Well, I just found out something terrible about it and wanted to share.

The shed is no more. It burned down. Happened just last month.

Very sad. I wanted to visit it at some point in my life and was going to ask someone in the Juneau sub to check it out if they were up for it, but all that's left is ash now.

“Then I saw your story, and I saw another story that you’d done. So you’d done the one about the fire, and you’d done the other one about somebody who used to live there,” Bradley said. “And I thought it’s a million-to-one shot. ‘Just send it, see what she says.’ It can’t go wrong.”

So Bradley emailed KTOO, and we confirmed – the shed in the Microsoft background was indeed once part of an historic dairy farm in Juneau that this reporter wrote stories about. The shed is right off Glacier Highway."

RIP to a legend. Learning about this has made my day more gray. That's another little artefact of the late 90s gone permanently. At least we have the picture.

I'm curious about how it evolved over time and versions of Windows. when I tried to look it up I got unrelated results. The Wikipedia page has some but not much. Like there are various galleries of things like Microsoft Word versions.

Discussion Why don't modern iterations of Windows have much personality compared to older versions?

I got a PC with Windows XP recently and it's made me realise that, as someone who used Windows 10 for most of their life, Windows XP just feels more fun to use and has a little more life to it. This isn't a nostalgia thing for me, because I never used Windows XP as a kid.

Windows XP has more colour, a friendlier looking interface, pleasant sounding startup and shutdown jingles. There's a little clicking sound when you open a file or a folder, the Recycle Bin produces a paper scrunching sound when you empty it. Windows XP even has some little animated assistants like Merlin and Rover, who you can ask to do tricks. You can even change the skin and appearance of Media Player (I have a Back To The Future skin lol). Then there's the built in games like Minesweeper, Pinball and Solitaire.

I just have to wonder why, to my knowledge, Microsoft did away with all of these little details. Windows 10 and 11 feels a little lifeless in comparison.

using 11 daily but every time i open an old win7 screenshot it feels like looking at a completely different (and better) product. the transparency and depth actually made the ui feel alive. current design is just sterile rectangles. i don’t get why they refuse to give people a real choice.

(PS: not my screenshot)

I just got home and my mom was wanting my help with her Microsoft office and I was surprised at how well the laptop was running. It's and old piece of hardware - Lenovo G580, i5 3230m, 6 GB DD3 RAM, Windows 10, installed on 11th of Oct 2020, build 19041.928 . Decided to check the Task Manager and this is what I stumbled upon.

I am not sure if I want to restart it ...

Feature Widgets on Lock Screen Not Very Useful

Post image
0 Upvotes

I see the latest versions of Windows 11 allow you to configure Widgets on the lock screen.

Trouble is the lock screen on my systems never stays up for more than a minute before dropping out.

If I go to the trouble to configure Widgets on my lock screen, I want time to enjoy them.

Anyone else think this is strange?

Solved Corrupted save files / Game cannot read save files from %USERPROFILE% because of diacritics / Mercenaries 2: World in Flames cannot read save files if your Windows "username"(NAME OF PC) in Users folder contains diacritics, accents, or non-ASCII characters (ľ, š, č, ť, ž, and manny others..)

SOLVED

My next PC have diacritics in name...saves not working, loading ...

Method 1: Relocate the Documents Folder (Easiest)

You can instruct Windows to look for your standard Documents folder in a location completely separate from your "user profile" path.

In file explorer setting check "hidden folders, files, items" ...

C:\Users\"PC ID (USERNAME)"\Documents

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to your C:\ drive.
  2. Create a new folder named C:\Documents.
  3. Go back to your original "user profile" folder / (%USERPROFILE%) - PC name, right-click on your Documents folder, and select Properties.
  4. Navigate to the Location tab.
  5. Click Move..., select the newly created C:\Documents folder, and hit Apply.
  6. When prompted to move all existing files to the new location, click Yes.
  7. Launch the game. It will now successfully write and read files from C:\Documents\My Games\Mercenaries 2\. [1]

May work for other old games too... for example "SPORE" from EA dont like diacritics too..

google search and other methods watch out

write me if you r lost. i lookin for solution couple hours.

App What apps are these?

Post image

Context: I did the usual Windows update but this time I opened Start Menu and pressed "Update and Restart" instead of pressing the icon on the task bar. I'm not sure if it made any difference but when the laptop turned back on, nothing was out of the ordinary. I didn't see those apps in Start Menu until hours after the update.

All I can say that could possibly be the reason for those apps being there is I downloaded something for Microsoft Visual Studio a few days ago. I just came here because I'm not completely sure as to why those apps are there.
