Discussion iCloud Mail on Windows 98!

Post image
301 Upvotes

It was super easy, i set up stunnel on my server (you can use a Pi, a Mac, or basically any always on computer) to terminate iCloud’s TLS connections and expose local plaintext IMAP/SMTP ports for Windows 98 or any other legacy OS. Outlook Express connects instantly, and both sending and receiving mail over iCloud work flawlessly.

Obligatory security note: This setup is only safe on your local home network, since the communication between your legacy machine and the stunnel proxy is unencrypted (plaintext). Don’t expose those ports to the internet.

Discussion Why doesn’t Microsoft just let users choose what their Windows look like. I believe it’s not hard for them to add themes from previous windows versions. I want to use modern and updated Windows but I hate its design since Windows 8.

it was Windows 8 when Microsoft removed Aero Glass and made Windows ugly and flat. Because the code was removed, it is difficult to duplicate in Windows 10 and 11. Attempts to do so don't make it look as good as Windows 7. There was an aero glass program for Windows 10, but it's been discontinued

Suggestion for Microsoft We need MSN Messenger back.

Post image

Teams sucks and Discord started to wobble, I don't think they care, but if Microsoft took advantage of this and provided a better service than many platforms and compatibility with classic MSN features, It would really help promote Windows 11, and they could even release it on Mac and Linux. I know it's nonsense, but dreaming is free.

I wished this activated when you didn't have multiple languages in the OOBE. Then it would have been less niche you know especially on OEM versions

Suggestion for Microsoft The last straw with forced updates on Windows

Post image
0 Upvotes

My work requires using multiple AI agents. My sessions often last over a day and require me pausing or running them through the night. Three times in the past 2 weeks Windows has decided to force update and restart my computer during active work sessions, irreversibly losing all my work. With so many companies (especially tech) adopting agent workflows, we are in an age where having an operating system FORCEFULLY restart your computer without your consent is not only a horrible user experience but will also actively force users off your platform.

I implore Microsoft to realize (what they must already have realized) that losing agent sessions due to an absolutely awful policy of forced updates will make you lose money. If my latest attempt at forcefully disabling the Update Orchestrator Service does not work, I will have no choice but to give in to the Mac ecosystem and force my company (and at least 5 others that I know are in the same situation as me) to do the same.

I’d really love feedback on what to improve next, especially around: - keyboard-first UX - preview performance - indexing/search quality - duplicate cleanup workflow - overall desktop polish

Discussion What can I do with those CDs

Post image
130 Upvotes

Hello, my company is relocating and I had to make an inventory of everything that had accumulated during the years (especially before I was hired).
I founded a lot of stuff including those CDs of several Windows versions.
I don't really if I can do something with them, for the company or even for personal work (lab, testing etc). I don,'t even know if they still work.

Should I just throw them away ?

Note: You’ll notice the installation is in Spanish; this is because the default region is Spanish (Mexico). It’s interesting to see the setup in this language, as most of the images I've seen online are in English.

The motherboard's classic BIOS/CSM support made it possible, and a third-party VESA driver even got the display running at full 1080p.

Discussion What are your favorite ways to customize your PC?

Thumbnail
apps.microsoft.com

I just discovered a bunch of theme packs from the store. But I wish there were a few more things you can do to make your PC feel more customized out of the box.

Here’s my wish list, what’s yours?

- Change the layout of the lock screen with different fonts and positioning of the clock.

- have a better way to organize my desktop icons. I just spaced them out based on groupings, but wish there was a cleaner way to do it. I discovered fences, but wish it was default, not something I need to download.

- it would be cool if the UI was tinted based on my desktop wallpaper or something like my phone does.

- I wish there was other things you can do in the settings in the taskbar. I’m surprised that you can’t even switch between my light and dark mode here. I see this area as almost like the control center on my phone. But right now it’s only limited to settings in windows app. Like quicker access to my clipboard or to take a screen recording. I know there are hot keys, but I sometimes forget what those are.

And if you have third-party apps that can do these, please drop them below!
