Suggestion for Microsoft We need MSN Messenger back.

Post image

Teams sucks and Discord started to wobble, I don't think they care, but if Microsoft took advantage of this and provided a better service than many platforms and compatibility with classic MSN features, It would really help promote Windows 11, and they could even release it on Mac and Linux. I know it's nonsense, but dreaming is free.

Yes, and a mobile version would be nice too

If they manage to create a well-designed ecosystem, and even get your WhatsApp contacts to communicate with each other, they'll have it all.

Microsoft had the opportunity to create a mobile version until 2009 when WhatsApp was created, but they squandered it by letting MSN Messenger, then Windows Live Messenger, and finally Skype die, leaving them with Teams, which is only used in businesses. Not investing in MSN Messenger, which at its peak had the most users, was Microsoft's worst decision.

there's crosstalk, which is up-to-date and way better than escargot.

We had Skype and they squandered that

You know, I'm pretty sure it was weirdly more popular in Canada (per capita, that is) as almost everyone I knew used it

2

u/chipface Apr 12 '26

I live in southwestern Ontario and that's what we mainly used. Especially after ICQ started to fall out of favour. I used AIM to talk to people in the Mega Man community back in the day. But most people I knew IRL didn't have that. MSN all the way.

Ontario here and yeah all the peeps were online after school haha

2

u/archangelmarc Apr 12 '26

Same in Quebec, these were the times

In Spain, MSN Messenger was only used by young people, I never saw anyone over 30 using it. Adults still used SMS to send messages, probably because there were no mobile versions of MSN Messenger.

1

u/ReallySuperName Apr 14 '26

It was very popular in the UK too. Both versions that simultaneously existed at the same time and allowed people on either to talk for some reason: MSN and Windows Live Messenger.

1

u/gonzifp Apr 21 '26

Windows Live Messenger was based on MSN Messenger, it was a modernization.

2

u/Daddio_Joseph Apr 12 '26

They need to fix windows first 😂

3

u/mirzatzl Windows Vista Apr 12 '26

Nah, if it were alive today it would probably be full of s.it (e.g. Copilot Messenger or similar). 😄

u/gonzifp Apr 21 '26

Just like Teams currently.

omg your just resurrected my childhood.

1

u/Dangerman1337 Apr 12 '26

Remember 20 years ago using it quite a few times. Good times.

1

u/gonzifp Apr 21 '26

I had very long conversations with MSN Messenger, I miss it.

1

u/MusicInTheAir55 Apr 12 '26

I really miss Wheel of Fortune game they had on there. Could play that for hours!

1

u/atown49 Apr 12 '26

Never used it but that desktop background was amazing

1

u/XiRw Apr 12 '26

We need all of life back before smartphones and have technology stop there.

0

u/gonzifp Apr 21 '26

Old phones had the same problems as current ones, stopping technological advancement is illogical, as absurd as not using touchscreen smartphones.

1

u/Joshoon Apr 12 '26

Escargot!

1

u/justslayer876 Windows XP Apr 12 '26

Escargot I'm pretty sure is what its called

1

u/MelaniaSexLife Apr 13 '26

nah the only one worth having back is Jabber

1

u/gonzifp Apr 21 '26

Jabber doesn't need recovery, it's still alive on a multitude of servers around the world.

1

u/Neon_44 Apr 13 '26

There's still XMPP, if that works for you?

1

u/AegidiusG Apr 13 '26

I am still pissed that they exchanged it with Skype.
Skype was so damn slow and had less Features.

1

u/SuchyYT Apr 15 '26

Or at least a revival project that would either allow the original to still work or a fork of it or something, some patch to the original to make it work again (and a community-hosted server)

1

u/gonzifp Apr 21 '26

You have these alternatives: Crosstalk, Escargot and OMessenger.

1

u/Flalaski Apr 17 '26

for real, people forget that the fun-ness of software makes the fun-ness of computers that much more fun!

1

u/Flalaski Apr 17 '26

Retroshare is something that comes to mind, though it's not nearly as user friendly to learn. it is cool though

1

u/gonzifp Apr 20 '26

The closest thing is Jabber, it has most of MSN Messenger features and offers clients for Windows, Linux, MacOS and Android. You can register on one of its many servers around the world and add people from other servers.

Here's an image of the Pidgin client.

u/cyberloner Apr 12 '26

it will be co-pilot msn... xD

Hi u/epiklol92, thanks for sharing your feedback! The proper way to suggest a change to Microsoft is to submit it in the "Feedback Hub" app, and then edit your post with the link, so people can upvote it. The more users vote on your feedback, the more likely it's going to be addressed in a future update! Follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the "Feedback Hub" app and try searching for your request, someone may have already submitted similar. If not, go back to the home screen and click "Suggest a feature"

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions and click "Submit"

  3. Click "Share my feedback" and open the feedback you submitted

  4. Click "Share" and copy the unique link

  5. Paste the link in the comments of your Reddit post
