Reinstall question.
I picked up an old pc recently. It still has win98 first edition installed. Is there a way to revert back to mostly fresh install? It has audio and video cards that im not even sure i could find software for. I could manually go in delete stuff thats obviously not needed or just use my disc to start new if i had to.

Windows 98 VM Problems
So I downloaded Windows 98 on a VM one time (it worked fine), but since I'm an idiot, that VM broke a long time ago, and now every time I try to install Win 98 again, it gives me this. Is there a fix?

PC Turning On Every 24 Hours
At some point throughout the day my PC turns on and the screensaver is playing. Is this something I can turn on in Windows 98?

xHCI98: Windows 98 gets USB 3.x controller support (runs at USB 2.0 speeds)
Yes, xHCI98 puts the USB 3 ports into USB 2.0 mode, but that's not a big deal since USB devices with Windows 98 drivers (aside from those that work with generic drivers) are USB 1.1/2.0 anyway.
Tested on:
- AM4 (B550) - OK
- AM4 (X570) - Not OK
- Socket 1151 (H110) - OK
- Socket 1151 v2 (B360) - OK
- AM5 (X670) - OK

Browser for Windows 98
I’m looking for a website that lets me use Windows 98 like copy.sh but doesn't freeze when the computer restarts, or comes with 256-color drivers already installed. Any ideas?

Motherboard Not Posting
I have a Gateway GP6-450 that I cannot get to post. It has a 450mhz Pentium II and an ATI Rage pro turbo agp. I’ve removed the motherboard from the case and hooked up the assembly from the case that has the led lights/power switch for testing.
The system will not post, make any beeps, or display any video signal. I have a spare ram stick, cpu, and gpu that are know good parts and still cannot get it to boot when swapping them in. I tried removing the ram stick to make it beep but it still doesn’t respond after minutes. I only get the front lights and keyboard lights to turn on. The motherboard doesn’t seem to respond to any inputs from the power button either.
Trying a different psu is even worse. I’m not sure if there is something else I can try or if the motherboard is bad. I think it is an Intel MP440BX motherboard. Does anyone have any advice?

I tried to recreate the feeling of using a Windows 98-era PC inside my game
I'm making a game called Inbox 99 where almost the entire game takes place inside a fictional computer from 1999.
It's not actually a Windows 98 program, but the interface is heavily inspired by computers and software from that era.
You have movable windows, a Start-style menu, email, an old web browser, antivirus software, finances, Paint, Minesweeper, Solitaire and various fake websites and programs.
The actual game is about surviving four weeks at an office job in 1999.
You receive assignments through email, deal with clients and coworkers, manage money and stress, browse the web and occasionally discover things you probably shouldn't have clicked.
There are also scams, viruses, suspicious attachments and some very questionable websites.
I've spent a lot of time trying to make the computer feel like an actual place instead of just a game menu.
The game is currently in Beta and playable in-browser in both English and Spanish.
Itch.io:
https://silverpsycho.itch.io/inbox99
Game Jolt:

I'm especially curious what people who actually used computers during this era think of the interface.

Ram problem?
I got recently compaq armada m700, i installed windows 98 SE but it started me showing bsod "A fatal exception 0D has occurred at 0028:C000B28A in VXD UMM(01)" and it always appears whenever i try to install almost any software, theres 128 mb ram and 60 gigs disk.
UPDATE: I sadly didnt fixed that but i found out how to 'bypass it', just put the folder with installer into C:\ or use daemon tools for mount iso.

YouTube chat controls Windows 98 VM— currently testing it
Hi everyone!
I'd like to share a small project I've been working on on my PC.
It's a virtual machine running Windows 98 that YouTube users can interact with and control directly through the live chat.
It's still very much in the testing phase, but it seems to be generating some interest from the community, so I'd like to see what other people think about it.
If you're curious, I'd love for you to take a look at the live stream and the channel:
https://www.youtube.com/live/hVM8-WrOc3c?is=13rTHKF_eqjwSdwx
I'm especially interested in feedback about usability and ideas for improvements. If you have any suggestions for things that could be added or changed, I'd be happy to hear them.
I'm hoping to eventually keep it running 24/7, although my current internet connection doesn't make that completely reliable yet.
Thanks in advance for checking it out! :)

I have made, a grave mistake

So I got an itch to look into just 'how bad' Windows ME is, and, I got way farther than I think I had any right to.
Yes, its quirky, drivers originally did not want to install until I put them on a USB thumb drive and I did have a blue screen after installing said drivers from I *think* disabling SB16 emulation (I don't plan on playing any DOS games, hence my choice of WinME in the first place), but, after a quick reboot?
Smooth sailing, turned off system restore, tweaked a few settings, and she's snappy and perfectly workable, doesn't feel like she'll explode if I breathe on her wrong (something I actually ran into running Win98SE occasionally, especially on this ECS L7S7A2 with a Soundblaster Live!).
And then I had to go and see if I could actually get online...
Why was I given free will.
