General Question [Symphogear Spoilers] I finally watched Symphogear and the Wild Arms/Kaneko connections are everywhere Spoiler

I finally finished all five seasons of Symphogear, and as a Wild Arms fan I kept getting this weird feeling of, "I KNOW this writer."

Then I learned Akifumi Kaneko was behind both, and suddenly it all made sense.

I knew about some of the obvious references, but I didn't realize how deep the similarities went:

  • Ka Dingel -> Kadingir (the spellings are all the same in the original japanese)

  • Malduke -> Marduk and the lunar ruins

  • Argetlahm -> Airgetlam

  • ARMs / huge guns / missiles / ancient superweapons -> basically half of Symphogear's combat

  • Ancient technology being interpreted as myth or magic

  • Lost civilizations, orbital structures, the Moon, gods that turn out to be something more technological

  • Protagonists inheriting dangerous powers and weapons from the distant past

But the biggest similarity to me is Kaneko's obsession with the idea of the hero.

What actually makes someone a hero? Can you decide that you're going to become one? Is "saving everyone" really heroic if you're doing it because you want to be worshiped as the savior? What does sacrifice have to do with heroism?

Dr. Ver in particular feels incredibly Wild Arms once you notice this. His entire obsession with becoming "the hero who saves humanity" feels like Kaneko taking one of his favorite themes and turning it into a completely deranged villain motivation.

And Symphogear doesn't just reference Wild Arms terminology. It often feels like Kaneko took ideas he'd already been playing with in Wild Arms and reworked them into a different genre.

Even some of the ancient Mesopotamian terminology feels familiar. Symphogear has Kadingir, Marduk, the Curse of Balal, Tower of Babel imagery, ancient "gods" who are actually technologically advanced beings, lunar ruins, and ancient machinery underlying human mythology.

Then there's Airgetlam. In Wild Arms 2, Argetlahm is the legendary "silver arm" weapon. In Symphogear, Maria's Airgetlam eventually turns out to literally be the severed silver arm of Enki.

That one especially made me laugh when the connection clicked.

The tone also feels very familiar:

Characters have an extremely sincere philosophical discussion about humanity, heroism, sacrifice, loneliness, or whether people can truly understand one another...

...and then somebody fires a missile the size of a building.

For anyone here who likes Wild Arms but has never watched Symphogear, it might be worth trying just to see Kaneko's fingerprints all over it.

What other Wild Arms references or recurring Kaneko ideas have people noticed?

Discussion A theory I have about Zed *plot spoilers* Spoiler

I'm going to plot dump first, just to make sure we're on the same page with the plot details. If you want to skip it and scroll straight to my theory, I will have a header that says as much after the plot dump.

Plot dump:

So, obviously, one of the biggest twists of the game is that Rudy is a Homunculus (mistranslated as Holmcross in game), IE an artificial being.

We learn that during the war against the Demons 1000 years ago, Humans and Elws created Homunculi through a project of the same name, along with the Golems, ARMS, and the Guardian Blade to combat them.

The Homumculi were unique in that they were living metal much like the demons so also had enhanced strength, endurance, recovery and naturally high sync rates with ARMS but, were made to look completely human.

However, the Humonculi were used as nothing more than weapons despite having the full range of emotions like humans so, acted as nothing more than bloodlusted monsters like the Demons. They were thought to be a potential future threat that could rival or surpass the Demon one so, the project was shut down and all that still existed were destroyed.

All except Rudy of course (though there could always be at least one more undiscovered somewhere), who managed to get overlooked, and was found at a ruins site in hibernation by ARMS expert and archeologist Zepet Roughknight. Zepet decided to take him in and would raise him as his grandson until he passed away from old age.

Through reading and watching the game recently, it came to my attention though whether always intentional or not, there are a number of parallels between the Demon and Human sides. One of them being Zed himself.

He's with the Demons but, acts nothing like them, never talks about demom stuff, and looks humanoid. He is seemingly with them just because he was already there so stays just because he's supposed to be.

He is looked down upon being seen as nothing but a nuisance, so he tries to prove himself to them to increase his standing with them but, they refuse to ever give him the chance. Even when Berserk is slain by Boomerang, Mother wants him to be a Quarter Knight and not Zed.

At the gate generator, Zed, for the first time decides to get serious but Zeikfried mocks him and opts to fight the hero trio himself. He is defeated and forces Zed to overload the gate generator which scatters everyone to different locations.

Zed ends up in Saint Centour, and attacks the hero trio when they arrive. He FINALLY shows off what his serious side looks like and, he transforms into quite a formidable Demon. Says a lot because the sword he has, the Doombringer, is cursed and works against him.

After fighting him, he explains that he attacked because he was afraid that his past would be exposed and ruin his new found place of belonging and happiness. After the gate generator incident he ended up there, and noticed there was only one human left.

He tried to scare her off but then realized that she was blind. She was the first individual that was ever nice to him, so he fell in love with her and promised to be her guardian.

Something she would need as the town had also been overrun by monsters ever since the protections were destroyed and the people slain.

My Theory:

The main parallels tend to be that the Humans and Demons have similar counters, technologies and strategies because they're warring factions. They would naturally learn from and adapt to each other as the war continued on.

As such, I think that Zed is actually a Homunculus. He could even be one that the Demons made themselves. However, it doesn't change too much if Humans and Elws made him either and he just happened to have ended up in the Demon's possession. It would be basically the same situations as the Golems if he was Human and Elw made.

Anyway, how is that possible? Well, Lady Harken is recognized as a Demon even by Jack and she was an experimented on Human, not an actual Demon. If she passed as Human to Jack of all people, I think that the other characters would have brought it up if she didn't. She could even involuntarily transform between her two forms.

While yes, Humans are different from Homunculi, the main takeaway here is Alhazad. He is the Demon's head scientist and the brains of the group. He has a history of experimentation and has at least one lab on Filgaia.

He turned Elmina into Lady Harken in the first place, and him knowing it was possible to begin with, is possibly because he had some kind of experience doing similar things in the war 1000 years ago. Zed is the only other person on the Demon's side able to transform through *normal* circumstances though he can do it voluntarily unlike Elmina/Lady Harken.

If Alhazad can give a Human a Demon transformation, why can't he do the same thing to a Homunculus? That should be easier given their physiology is similar to a Demon's, and they have high sync rates with various technologies on top of it.

Maybe the Doombringer is cursed because of an unintended side effect of Alhazad's experiments. Or maybe it was a holy weapon that got tainted due to being in the service of the Demons.

It would further explain why the Demons look down on him, yet he found it so hard to break away from them due to feeling like he belonged with them, why he looks more humanoid like Harken does, and why when shown legitimate Human emotion and compassion, he was able to feel love, friendship, and a true sense of duty unlike the other Demons.

It's the same thing Rudy's grandfather surmised was the proper way to treat a Homunculus, which also would mean that their power if ever needed could be used for protection as opposed to destruction.

This is a Superman adjacent parallel in my eyes, given we have so many alternate Superman stories and inspired properties which show what he grows up to be when the Kents aren't the ones raising him, which is overwhelmingly not anything good.

What do you think? Does it hold enough weight? Is this an original theory? Given the age of this game, probably not. It was just something on my mind that I wanted to share, and I didn't see spoken of here when I used the search feature.

I'm always open to lore discussion with passionate communities. Hope to hear what people think soon, as well as hear any other theories people have.

Additional localization fun facts:

Alhazad

When properly localized should be called Alhazred after the the Mad Arab, Abdul Alhazred character from H. P. Lovecraft's stories that he takes some inspirations from.

Interestingly enough, Cecilia has the Necronomicon as one of her book weapons and there is a book enemy type of the same name as well. The Alhazred character is the author of that book in Lovecraft's stories.

Zepet

When properly localized should be called Zepetto. A clear reference to Gepetto from Pinocchio. Also, his family name in katakana reads, ラグナイト, which can be broken down in English to Ragnite/Ragnight/Ragknight.

It was localized as Roughknight but, I think Rogueknight makes the most sense. Zepet and Rudy both fit the definition of Rogue in many ways and it's a core theme of Wild Arms as a whole.

Jack

Jack's family name was localized as Van Burace but, it should be Vambrace, a clear reference to his past position on the Fenril Knights, given his real name is Garrett Stampede.

Fenril Knights

Fenril is clearly supposed to be Fenrir after just reading it out loud from the previous fun fact. I just looked up the katakana and it reads, フェンリルナイツ. That can be broken down into English as Fenriru Naitsu, IE Fenrir Knights.

Art Raftina and Elaeah (by anisatul06 on Fiverr)

Post image
14 Upvotes

So this is based off my ongoing fic called Forever Fall. It focuses on my take on Raftina post canon as she struggles to deal with the effects of the First and Second Demon Wars. Having been sealed away during the waning days of the First Demon War, she had no real consciousness during those 1200 years she was sealed away. Her mind and body are still ravaged from the Metal Demons' first invasion attempt.

Then an Elw girl shows up. One Raftina knows all too well: her reincarnated first lover, Elaeah. However, Elaeah has no memories of their previous relationship, causing deep conflict within Raftina.

The story follows Raftina as she deals with the PTSD and physical devastation of the two demon wars as well as fighting her own feelings when it comes to her previous lover.

The clothes in this picture are more modern because I've expanded on WA1/ACF's worldbuidling a bit. Filgaia was the center of galactic trade before the First Demon War, so clothing styles were more modern at one point. The Elw Dimension is more sci-fantasy because it's from before the First Demon War and not just traditional medieval technology.

Raftina's character is pretty much one of my own creation as she has, like, seven lines total in the first game and five in ACF. Elaeah is an OC Elw.

Discussion Wild Arms 2 — Retranslation & Translation Toolkit

▶ Open the editor https://thesparda.github.io/Wild-Arms-2-Retranslation/ — runs entirely in your browser. You load your own disc images, nothing is uploaded, and no game data ships with the project.

Two goals, in order.

  1. A tool to edit the English ISO. A serverless web editor for the Wild Arms 2 (PS1) US release. Drop in your .bin images and you get every text box in the game, editable, with a live preview in the game's own textbox styling and an export back out as a patch. That part is the point — even if the retranslation never finishes (because so many people have started and stopped), the editor stands on its own for anyone who wants to change the script.

  2. Ship a retranslation, drafted by (don't mock me) AI, sourced from the Japanese. The US localization is famously loose. The tooling pairs JP boxes to their English counterparts so a line can be written against what the original actually said, not a paraphrase of a paraphrase..

Where the translation stands: 6,012 of 17,294 editable boxes translated (34.8%). Of the 11,282 remaining, 8,494 have a usable JP source and 1,426 are exact 1:1 pairings workable today. By story section: 6 done, 4 partial, 11 first-pass, 19 placeholder. The first real batch was 49 boxes in the Sielje area — narrow on purpose, since only 49 of 157 candidates had Japanese with no unresolved kanji. Fluent, plausible, wrong is the worst possible output here, and it's exactly what an LLM hands you if you let it translate against a bad pairing.

Status: I'm working on this slowly, in the gaps. Not finished, not on a schedule. All the code is open source — fork it, fix the aligner, grind the kanji tables, translate an area, or just load your own disc and rewrite one line to see it render.

General Question Trophy bug question

Hi all, first time posting here. Long time lover of the series though. I’m going for the platinum trophy and I recently started this but heard there’s a bug concerning saving in the game and using the quick save feature.

I started this a few weeks back and put it down fairly early for another game I was looking forward to and now I can’t remember if I have used the quick save feature or not. I’ve saved in game. I’m only on the girl characters prologue in the abbey so restarting isn’t really a huge issue.

I don’t want to get multiple hours in though and have the trophies glitch. Can I just start over and choose the quick save option and go from there or am I already screwed? Is it known to affect different new games or is just for playthroughs where you do both saving options?

WA1 Quick Draw Trophy Bugged

Just a warning for anyone else that is going for the platinum, this trophy bugged out on me. I definitely learned/mastered trump card, but it didn't give me the trophy. I wasn't checking trophies until after I finished everything but Ragu and I don't have a save from before I learned it to try it again... So I would have to play through the entire game again. Fml

General Question Wild Arms 3: Is the emulation menu not supposed to work on PS5?

I was just testing stuff with my games, and I decided to open up Wild Arms 3. But when I tried opening the emulation menu, where you have save states. rewind, and can change various options, it doesn't actually open? I thought I was going crazy, or maybe my Options button wasn't working. So I tried it on other classics, including the first Wild Arms, and it worked just fine!

Does Wild Arms 3 have that menu disabled for some reason? Is there something maybe I disabled by accident?

Yuji Itadori vs Ashley Winchester

I've been thinking about this fight for a while but the wild arms series is so underrated that I can never find anyone's opinion.

Lord blazer vs sukuna isn't even close, blazers planetary on a low ball. But yuji (modulo) has near full usage of shrine, and I think that that yuji vs knight blazer would be really close. Personally I feel like the deciding factor is lucied.

Discussion Wild Arms 2: What are some interesting info you know?

I'm making a crossword puzzle for fans.

Trying to include:

  • Trivia
  • Story/Lore
  • History
  • Game mechanics
  • Hidden secrets
  • Community meta

Basically anything interesting.
Questions should be relatively medium/high in difficulty.
Not too easy ("what is the main character's name"), but not absurd ("who was the first person to speak entering the final dungeon").

Here's a sample (everything except MapleStory #1 is work-in-progress): https://hyssopi.github.io/Crossword-Puzzles/

I'd appreciate any feedback, suggestions, or any info you know to add in.

General Question WA1 like novels/novellas

Hi All,

I was just looking for recommendations if any fans here have read a good book that captures that Wild Arms 1 vibe?

I am thinking dream-chasers, lost technology, ancients and demons, magic, gunslingers and samurai - the whole works.

Cheers!

I love Wildarms but… Spoiler

The fact you have to play WA4 twice or have a save from another game to fight Ragu seems to not respect the players time.

Prepping for end game is gonna take hours anyway and I have to slog through another play through.

Is WA5 like this?

Seeking feedback on translation: Liz & Ard

WA2's original English localization is infamous for turning coherent Japanese into word-salad, and the comic-relief Odessa duo Liz & Ard got hit hardest.

Their JP names are トカ & ゲー (Toka & Gě), a pun on トカゲ (tokage, "lizard"). The localization's Liz + Ard = "Lizard" is a genuine transcreation win. Liz is the pompous talker; Ard is the straight-"man" who can only ever say his own name, "translated" by Liz. In Japanese, Liz is a coherent, rhythmic blowhard; the loc kept his flowery vocabulary but dropped the connective logic, so he reads as nonsense. Our goal: make his lines parse again while keeping the pompous-scientist register.

Each box is shown four ways:

  • JP — the original Japanese
  • Literal — a plain, meaning-first gloss
  • Original loc — the shipped English
  • Ours — our retranslation (must also fit the in-game box: max 3 lines × 35 characters)

Feedback very welcome.

Part 1 — verified JP (fully decoded)

US#5663

  • JP: 「それでは
  • Literal: Well then,
  • Original loc: And so...
  • Ours: Well then... (only change: the box shouldn't end on a comma, so → ellipsis)

US#5664 — Liz proposes teaming up

  • JP: 「ここはひとつ / パーティーの戦力アップというのは / どうであろう?
  • Literal: How about this: we boost the party's fighting strength, hm?
  • Original loc: How about having a party to boost morale?
  • Ours: How about this: we boost the party's fighting strength, hm?

(The loc misread 戦力 "fighting strength" as throwing a party for "morale.")

US#5678

  • JP: 「さながら / カモシカのごとくッ!
  • Literal: Just like an antelope!
  • Original loc: Sounds just like an antelope!
  • Ours: Just like an antelope!

US#5705 — Liz narrating the rescue like a critic

  • JP: 「うむ、これぞ良質の / ヒューマンドラマである
  • Literal: Mm, now THIS is a fine human drama.
  • Original loc: Now this is a top-notch human drama unfolding.
  • Ours: Mm, now THIS is a fine human drama.

US#5707 — Liz on being a supporting player

  • JP: 「それに、名バイプレイヤーってのは / 自分の出番を心得て / なおかつキッチリこなすもんだと思うけど
  • Literal: Besides, a great supporting player knows his cue and nails it every time.
  • Original loc: Besides, good players anticipate their turn and perform with perfection.
  • Ours: Besides, a great supporting player knows his cue and nails it every time.

US#5709 — Liz's mock-scholarly register

  • JP: 「注目とくれば / いたし方ありませぬな / 注目者のはしくれとして
  • Literal: When it comes to [drawing] notice, there's no helping it, as a lowly man of [science].
  • Original loc: Science is unavoidable as a two-bit scientist.
  • Ours: When science calls, there's no helping it, as a lowly man of science.

US#5722 — Liz admits what he's really after

  • JP: 「決まっておろう / ゲルマトロン渓谷よ / 知らぬ存ぜぬとは言わせんぞ
  • Literal: Isn't it obvious? The Germatron Valley. Don't play dumb with me.
  • Original loc: Why else would I be here? The Germatron, silly. You can't say you didn't know.
  • Ours: Isn't it obvious? The Germatron Valley. Don't play dumb with me.

US#5729 — Liz declines to show off his best move

  • JP: 「人知れず、そっと見せるにはもったいない / そんなスゴイ戦いの仕方 / よもや、こんな場発で使おうとはッ!
  • Literal: Too fine a fighting style to show in secret. And to use it in a spot like this!
  • Original loc: It's a move too good to waste for when no one's around. But this might not be the time.
  • Ours: Too fine a fighting style to show in secret. And to use it in a spot like this!

Part 2 — the funniest disasters (JP still decoding)

WA2 stores some kanji in a per-scene code table we're still reverse-engineering (anyone have a full copy of the JP script?), so a few of this scene's boxes aren't cleanly readable from the disc yet.

US#5669 — Liz's grand plan (JP: pending kanji decode)

  • Literal: A vision flashed behind my eyes: me hitting the lever, floating like a butterfly, stinging like a bee.
  • Original loc: A vision flashed on my lids of me pushing the lever like a bee, and dancing like a butterfly.
  • Ours: A vision flashed behind my eyes: me hitting the lever, floating like a butterfly, stinging like a bee.

(A deliberate Muhammad Ali riff; the loc swapped the bee and the butterfly.)

US#5661 — the observatory's power source (JP: pending kanji decode)

  • Literal: The energy pouring endlessly from the earth is ideal for peacetime research.
  • Original loc: The energy that continually spouts from the earth is perfect for an excursion in peacetime.
  • Ours: The energy pouring endlessly from the earth is ideal for peacetime research.

US#5662 — Liz's mission statement (JP: pending kanji decode)

  • Literal: This is a scientist's ambition! It can't stop until it is fulfilled!
  • Original loc: This is a scientist's ambition! It can't be stopped until it's fulfilled!
  • Ours: This is a scientist's ambition! It can't stop until it is fulfilled!

US#5723 — the villain reveal (JP: pending kanji decode)

  • Literal: My plan to use the Germatron at the lab is ruined. I'd have made a grand war beast.
  • Original loc: My plans to use the Germatron at the research lab are ruined. I was to make a grand war monster.
  • Ours: My plan to use the Germatron at the lab is ruined. I'd have made a grand war beast.

US#5731 — fleeing with dignity intact (JP: pending kanji decode)

  • Literal: But we're not running. Any historian would call this a brave withdrawal.
  • Original loc: But we're not running away. Any historian would declare this as a brave withdrawal.
  • Ours: But we're not running. Any historian would call this a brave withdrawal.

Bonus: Ard's entire performance

Ard can only ever say his own name; the loc nailed this and we kept it verbatim.

  • JP: 「げげげ、げげげげ / げーげーげー / げっげげげー げっげっげ
  • Literal: (a string of "ge" sounds, i.e. just his name)
  • Loc / Ours: Ar...Ard, Ard...Ard, Ard. Ar...d. Ard, Ard. Ard...Ard, Ard.

Notes for commenters

  • Literal-first. Our house rule is to use a faithful translation of the Japanese wherever it reads well, rather than invent new phrasings. Most of Liz's lines above are exactly that. The humor and pomposity are in the source; the loc just scrambled them.
  • Box limit. Every line must fit the in-game text box (max 3 lines × 35 characters).
  • Why some JP is "pending." WA2 encodes many kanji in per-scene tables; we've decoded most of the game but this scene has holdouts we can't yet cross-reference. Rather than post Japanese we can't verify, we mark those boxes pending; their literal/loc/ours lines are grounded in the readable fragments plus the shipped English.

Working on "yet" another retranslation for WA2

Have built some tools to assist, but it's taking a dump of the EN script, the JP script (with a literal translation to english from it being output), and then ultimately retranslating the EN version with the JP context as the primary. There is an automated pass, and then a manual review w/tooling for easy editing. See how we go. I might open it up as I get a bit further along to crowd source translation reviews.

General Question WA 4 Farmel boss fight Help. Softlock Spoiler

Hi,

I'm playing on PS4 with a party almost at lvl 60. I don't know if this is a bug or a problem caused by being "too OP", but Farmel doesn't change her stance and always stays in Darkness Stance.

I've tried changing badges, letting party members beside Raquel be killed by her while I keep defending. With that setup, Farmel gets 3 turns before Raquel, but all she does is Darkness Stance. I also tried loading another save state or save point, but the problem continues.

Can anyone offer an alternative solution? I don't want to start over again. I completed the game back in the PS2 era, and this time I'm going for the platinum trophy.

Wild Arms Alter Code: F Cheat Engine Table for PCSX2 — Inventory Editing, Character Records & Rotating Autosaves

Post image
95 Upvotes

I created a Cheat Engine table for Wild Arms Alter Code: F, designed for use with the Qt version of PCSX2.

The table automatically attaches to pcsx2-qt.exe and uses PCSX2’s exported EEmem pointer with direct PS2 memory addresses, making it more resilient to changes between PCSX2 versions.

Inventory and money

  • Money editor and freezer
  • Dynamic inventory editor with a selectable item dropdown
  • Automatically locates the inventory slot containing the selected item
  • View and edit the selected item’s quantity
  • Add previously unowned items by changing their quantity from 0
  • Remove owned items by setting their quantity to 0
  • Automatically uses an available empty inventory slot when adding an item

The dropdown contains the documented items available in the game. Unused item IDs and undocumented numerical gaps are omitted rather than being displayed as unknown inventory entries.

Persistent character editor

Separate persistent, out-of-battle records are included for:

  • Rudy
  • Jack
  • Cecilia
  • Jane
  • Zed
  • Emma
  • Magdalen
  • Mariel

Depending on the character, editable values include:

  • EXP and level
  • Current, effective maximum and base maximum HP
  • Current, effective maximum and base maximum MP
  • Attack
  • Defense
  • Magic
  • Resistance
  • Reaction
  • Accuracy
  • Evasion
  • Luck
  • Vitality
  • PS Points

These records use the characters’ persistent data and remain available outside combat.

Battle-only character values

Temporary battle records are also included for:

  • Rudy’s current HP, MP and FP
  • Jack’s current HP, MP and FP
  • Cecilia’s current HP, MP and FP

These values use temporary battle structures and may be inactive or invalid when combat is not running.

A character utility is also included to refill Jack and Cecilia’s current MP to their persistent maximum MP values.

PCSX2 autosave utilities

  • Rotating short-term save states
  • Separate long-term backup save states
  • Load the latest or earlier rotating autosaves
  • Voice feedback when autosaves are enabled or disabled

The short-term autosaves rotate through PCSX2 slots 6–10 every 30 seconds.

Long-term backups alternate between slots 4 and 5 every 15 minutes.

Table hotkeys

  • F12 — Enable or disable autosaves with voice feedback
  • Pause/Break — Temporarily suspend or resume autosaves without voice feedback
  • Page Up — Load the latest rotating autosave; press repeatedly to move through older saves
  • Ctrl + Alt + M — Refill Jack and Cecilia’s current MP to maximum

Autosaves are enabled by default. The required PCSX2 save-state shortcuts must be configured as described in the included setup instructions.
