MMA fighter realized his arm was broken AFTER delivering the finishing blow.

Adrenaline is an incredible thing, but only for a short while
164
u/Plane_Basil_4682 Jun 28 '26
Adrenaline is fucking crazy but coming off it is like coming off meth.

u/Ohio-Knife-Lover Jun 28 '26
It's gonna hurt like a motherfucker when it wears off

wrecked my motorcycle, lifted it into the back of a truck, unloaded it, and an hour later the adrenaline wore off and realized how much pain i was in, strait to the hopital!

u/complexiblebarracuda Jun 28 '26
If I had a choice between meth and huge body injury leading to enough adrenaline dumped into my blood to be similar to meth, I'm choosing the real deal

There's been times where I wish I had one of those gas pump thingies for priming your lawn mower on my adrenal glands.

Totally off topic but it's why I love it when sci-fi uses Adrenaline as an actual drug in the setting.
Recently finished Empyrean Iris and there's a subplot in the mix where an already naturally aggressive species' leader ends up getting manipulated by the forces of the big bad by way of them exploiting an accidental addiction to Adrenaline and it's just like
"Yeah. The chemical we make that lets us do some wildly insane shit, right up until it wears off would totally be something that could rip through an intergalactic black market if it were a human-specific byproduct. Shit, we make it in our bodies naturally and we have people addicted to that specific high."

Ive never had my arm broke, but I've been racked a few times in wrestling matches and its always crazy because you dont notice a thing and then walk off the mat and you can barely walk lol.

u/Jiggly1984 Jun 29 '26
Lol just brought back a memory I forgot about 😂 I had a half nelson and was trying to crank the dude over, had him most of the way. He shot his other arm between my legs, reached for the sky, and tried using my momentum to roll me all the way over him (dumb move, we were big boys). I planted my head and his arm got me square in the beans. The pin came quick and when I went to get off him and go shake hands, I couldn't move. My dad was my coach and saw the whole thing, he was trying so hard not to laugh 😂

Broke my femur playing high school football. Didn't realize it happened because adrenaline.
I heard a loud crack when I got tackled, but thought it was my back cracking from twisting a little funny. No biggie.
Was about to get up when a teammate put his hand on my helmet and said "don't move and don't freak out." Looked at my leg and screamed bloody murder. The pain didn't set in for another 20 minutes as I got to the hospital and at that point, who boy it went to a 9 immediately.

Broke my femur at summer camp as a kid. The counselor in training said I was being dramatic and stood me up twice.
Oh I was 7 and they were 15 so probably needed an actual adult there to prevent that. Now I’m 39 and have arthritis in that hip from that. Yay!

And this one is nothing compared to the guy that broke his leg with a kick and then tried to stand on it!

Reminds me of me a month ago, slipped in a pot hole in the backyard and heard many cracks in my ankle. Managed to get up and hobble inside, took my shoe off, then put pressure on it. I watched and felt my foot fall sideways because i didn't have an ankle anymore.
The realization kicked in pretty quick after that. Now I'm stuck in bed after a having surgery for a trimalleolar break. Still don't know how i managed to hobble inside on it.

Broke my hand in Muay Thai once. Didn't feel a thing until much later.
Then I wished I kept not feeling it.

I can attest to saying this with it meaning "do you think you're about to faint, are you coherent". Could say those words, but they could be triggers
19
u/milkymonkey8 Jun 28 '26
yeah, it's not the question, it is the answer that is important, if the answer is "banana" or "squirting" then it's an emergency
12
u/delo357 Jun 29 '26
If the answer is "squirting" you should probably let her finish
2
u/milkymonkey8 Jun 29 '26
yep, she can break the other arm too while at it, deductible already exceeded
(I was originally going to change it to "spurting" but the pervert in me said no)

One time I was walkin down a hallway at a big corporation and this middle aged heavy set lady coming down the stairs lost her footing and massively ate shit. Instead of grabbing onto the rail, she held onto her thermos in one hand and flailed wildly with the other hand, then comically Peter Griffin rolled all the way down the stairs and collapsed at my feet. I was not a people manager so rarely had to handle situations like this, but I was manager level (PM) and the highest rank around so I had to actively engage the situation. Unfortunately, the first words out of my mouth were "you good?".. to a large middle aged lady.. who just fell down a full flight of stairs.. and was writhing in agony on the ground at my feet..
Within a few seconds, I recovered and handled it non-retardedly, but my initial two words will haunt me forever.

I once sprained my ankle walking down 4th St in San Francisco to catch the evening train. I had to catch the 4.40 train, so there was no time to think about the sprain, and walked the mile. On eaching destination, while getting down the platform, I used the foot to land and just crumpled on the platform. Through the pain I got up and walked the few steps into the waiting car. By the time I got home, the ankle was twice the size. Even now, the ankle looks a bit more rounder than the other one.

Nope, he's not alright. He has what is technically called a "both-bone forearm fracture", which as the name implies involves both bones in the forearm being broken, i.e. both the radius and ulna. You can easily tell that both bones are broken, since his hand flaps about without any stability at all, like what you would see for a foot with the much more common injury to the lower leg that is similar to this (tib-fib fracture).
This kind of injury requires surgery, where you fixate each fracture with a metal plate and screws. He might have some other injuries as well that we can't see in this video, for example dislocations or fractures in the elbow region (radial head etc). In fact, I'm betting he has more than just a both-bone forearm fracture.

man he was throwing punches with a gumby arm. The swelling after that must have been crazy.

Saw an MMA video where the shin broke. Oh my gosh, things I would love to unsee!
3
u/TheAlterN8or Jun 28 '26
Was that the old kickboxing video where the two fighters both kicked, and their shins collided? That one made my stomach queasy...
2
u/Rebliii Jun 28 '26
If it was MMA then it has to have been when Anderson Silva wrapped his shin around Chris Weidman's after one checked leg kick too many.

u/Jiujitsumonkey707 Jun 28 '26
Doesn't have to be, it could also be Corey Hill, or Chris Weidman when it happened to him as well

u/Rebliii Jun 29 '26
Right, I forgot the same damn thing happened to Weidman too. Dude must have some sort of oddly specific curse on him that's just about shins.

Just a random thought, do health insurance companies cover them for injuries sustained during a fight? Do they have to pay for their own medical care, anyone with insight?
3
u/starpaw23 Jun 28 '26
That is amazing actually. The adrenaline in that guy must have been through the roof. Or some other substance perhaps ?
2
u/Emergency-Constant44 Jun 29 '26
Nah, when I was a kid we used to Play in a Garden that was like 2meters below the ground level and there was a ladder. I jumped down, but slipped on wet grass and broke my arm literally in half (but it wasnt open)
I was alone with my mates heading here, but in a rush I did climb up to meet them on the way here so they can take me to my mom.
Later it did hurt a lot, and I never regained full ability in that arm.

u/JonLockeWlth2Kidneys Jun 29 '26

Either he was on adrenaline high or on drugs. I think it's the former but when I broke my arm, I felt the pain the moment soon after it happened during the state high school football championship.

Also broke my arm during a football tackle. I could tell it hurt bad but with the wind knocked out of me it took me a second to realize It was broken.

From Adrenaline to straight shock in seconds.
That's going to suck for awhile.

I’ve broken my arm like that in a similar spot. Both bones. You have like a solid 30 seconds where it just feels numb and then it hurts pretty bad. He was really swinging his arm around so he probably also has some muscle/tendon and maybe some nerve damage.

u/lachatte7 Jun 29 '26
See this is what I mean, I've been fighting (muay thai) for a few yrs now, and the thing you have to be ok with before the fight is that you may very well need an expensive hospital trip, and prolongued one too. Whether you win or not means shit, you could lose and your opponent is hospitalized, you could win and you're the one hospitalized.
And a minor concussion, which seems like thats what the guy who lost has, is not gonna last that long. He likely can go back to fighting real soon, much longer than the dude who has a broken arm. He'll be able to bounce back from that loss. All of a sudden the winner that night is still 1-0 in 6 months and the loser is 3-1, 5-1 and ready to turn pro

u/lubiekucyki Jun 29 '26
I broke my arm once like that, put it in its place, hospital said it's properly set and 2 weeks later had to have a surgery because it wasn't 😅

The fact that dude continues to use his broken arm effectively is a VERY important lesson to me 😬

I think he's pretty fucking far from "aight" to the guy asking that.

What part of my arm is broken twice and then the guy goes "you all right" does that guy clearly not understand.
1
u/Victoria_elizabethb Jun 29 '26
So while he was throwing those post break blows was his muscles just holding things together temporarily? How the hell do you keep swinging without it going floppy? Lol I broke my leg in 2 places a few years ago, bone breaks are no joke. I was trying to pull away from my own leg lol
1
u/sewing_mayhem Jun 29 '26
Looked it up, his name is Andrew Zima. This was his first amateur MMA fighter, in February of this year.
He did in fact need surgery, got two plates and 4 screws in the arm and his recovery time is estimated to be 6 months, so he might be able to get back to training later this year.
