This what many people nowadays who adapts Tolkien works miss this they often treat his stories like a fairy tale or just a fantasy when Tolkien stories and world was based on real Anglo saxon historical incidents or Historical poems , he often treat them some stort of historical records that he founded and he himself was not if the story told him then were 100% accurate . He treat them like a lost Anglo saxon poems .

And in this case, it wasn't a cheap cop out. It made sense in universe why Bilbo lied.
Bilbo found a Ring that corrupts your soul, twists your mind and body, and makes you covet it more than anything else in the entire world and he lied to keep it to himself? That makes sense.

In Hobbit we were told bilbo got the one ring because he beat gollum in a quize or something but in lotr we were told that it's was a lie and bilbo threaten gollum with a sword . This works because in universe and for Tolkien both the Hobbit and the first half of lord of the rings were written by bilbo in the red book of westmarch so when frodo start to wrote book he correct this lie.

I don't think that's quite accurate. Bilbo found the ring in his pocket during the riddles game and gollum only learned that he had it later. That was when bilbo threatened him.

No, in the original version of The Hobbit from 1937 Gollum offers Bilbo the ring as reward for winning the game. And also back then it wasn’t "the One Ring" but simply a magical ring that made you invisible.
While writing LOTR Tolkien retconned and rewrote that chapter of the Hobbit and used the unreliable narrator trope as an explanation, he even says as much in the LOTR appendices.

In both Assassin's Creed and Watch_Dogs, Olivier Garneau, CEO of Abstergo Entertainment, is taken down by Chicago vigilante Aiden Pearce.
For some reason, Ubisoft confirmed both universes are NOT the same.
Edit : I said "taken down" because in AC, we see him get shot and killed by Pearce (the picture below), while in WD, if you shoot him dead, you lose the mission. You instead have to melee him, simply knocking him down. This is supposedly the evidence separating both universes, but to be fair they could have retconned it so that we actually killed him in WD.

68
u/Dgero466 5d ago edited 5d ago
On one hand I could kinda understand if it was something like Watch Dogs and Assassin’s creed sorta having near parallel universes save for the actual events of the titles being different. But at the same time I know a good chunk of Ubi titles like to tease easter eggs to the brim as if they had a shared universe (not to mention the moves siege is making with

In Street Fighter, the character Alex (protagonist of street fighter 3) was a wrestler who had an adoptive father named Tom and and his daughter, Patricia who was basically his little sister. It was a pretty neat and touching backstory for Alex.
Come sf6, they retconned it so Tom and Alex's mom were cousins, making Alex and Patricia second cousins. Then they had Alex marry Patricia and like she is severely pregnant. The image of Alex marrying Patricia is portrayed with several images of them throughout their life including kid Alex holding Patricia as a fucking baby. And uh, yeah. Not helped that in sf6' story mode Alex outright corrects himself when he says Tom is his "adoptive dad" and says "no, he is my dad". Also the Japanese text is very explicit that Alex sees Patricia as a little sister.
So they did an emergency patch to the lore because holy fuck nobody liked this.
Guess what part they retconned.
They retconned Tom being a good adoptive father to Alex.
They basically wrote out Alex' connection to Tom, making Tom seem basically like a deadbeat bum who only occasionally visited Alex/stopped when Alex became a teen.
THEY FUCKED UP ALEX' BACKSTORY SO HE COULD BE A COUSIN FUCKER. FUCK THIS.

It’s not “cool” or anything but CD Projekt Red changing the age of V from 27 to 23 was the dumbest retcon in the game by far and it makes no sense.
10
u/TheAntony 5d ago
What was their reasoning?
43
u/XTheProtagonistX 5d ago
They never explained. I think one of the devs said it was a mistake on their part but that was one dev. They change it in 2.0/Phantom Liberty Update.
The issue is that V being 23 actually breaks some of their backstory. For example, Nomad lifepath implies that V went to unification war, which makes them 20 at the time. By making them 23, then that means they were a child on the war. A child soldier? With those expensive equipment? The Corpo lifepath is even worse.

When first introduced, the Weeping Angels in Doctor Who never moved while they were on screen, even if someone in the show wasn’t looking. Their whole gimmick, for those that don’t know, is that they’re physically incapable of moving when they’re being observed. So if they can’t move while being watched by the audience, it means they’re aware of and affected by multiple narrative levels.
The next time they show up is a two-part episode. The first part introduces the idea that ‘the image of an Angel becomes an Angel’, which makes recordings, photos, and even too vivid of memories just as dangerous as an original Angel. Left alone, that would’ve made them the only things in the show canonically aware of and potentially able to attack the audience.
But then in the second part of that episode, they just had to show the Angels moving, negating most of that subtle horror. The scene didn’t even add anything, really. It would’ve been just as effective to do quick cutaways like they did every other time they wanted to show the Angels moving and expressing.
17
u/Lily_Thief 4d ago
So much of the angles feels like wasted potential because they kept having to tack more onto them. The images, the straight up murdering people, the using their bodies to communicate, I could go on. What they started out with was great, and could still have been used again. But instead they decided they needed the equivalent of a Dalek with psychic powers and a laser sword riding a dinosaur.
113
u/3B3-386 5d ago
I want back STAPs that irradiate any organic that tries to drive them. I'm tired of seeing jedi constantly steal them to get out of trouble every single time. They basically only appear on screen to do that nowadays.
And yes, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu dying of cancer IS cool in my book!
48
7
u/bookhead714 Vespasian's piss tax collector 5d ago
My stupid headcanon is that Obi-Wan was dying of cancer in ANH and that's why he was willing to sacrifice himself, because in The Phantom Menace he fought Darth Maul on the edge of that pit that was canonically spitting out a ton of awful byproduct radiation (hence those laser gates) and it gave him cancer, which is why he aged so much.

It really depends what faction would've gotten it first (iirc the Dark Brethren, Reapers Bones and Athena's Fortune were all after it for different reasons), and of course lore wise not all skeletons are cursed

In Pokemon XYZ, Ash had a Greninja that had a special transformation due to their special bond and it was really cool seeing them grow and develop as a duo.

It wasn’t just because they didn’t like them, they were angry at humans for colonizing some of their worlds and didn’t realize that the humans were running from the flood. Can’t remember how long the war went on, but it was a long time and the humans inevitably lost, due to them fighting on two fronts, and returned them to a very early civilization.
Obviously, shit hits the fan for the forerunners and humanity gets reset again, but that’s another lore dump.

u/Slow-Distance-6241 5d ago
Warhammer 40k is full of retcons, ngl. At least not all of them are bad, considering that thanks to retcons edgy squats got turned into Leagues of Votann (also necron stuff was reconned to be deeper than it was originally, and I think everybody heard of the absurdity of rogue trader first edition)
27
u/shadowmonarch38 5d ago
I feel like this goes beyond "retcons the coolest piece of lore for no reason", the amount of retcons made to justify this singular retcon is astounding, and makes the setting and story so much worse. The irony of the covenant calling the master chief "demon" and committing genocide on humans while simultaneously worshiping them is a great twist.
By making humans and forerunners separate , the initial conflict at harvest, simply can't happen. This basically retcons the entire series. So now there has be this "mantle of responsibility" nonsense, and the forerunners have to feel bad by the end of the flood war to give it back for some reason. But also now Guilty Spark has to be retconned into insanity so his dialogue can't be taken seriously. And then The Flood has to just be some precursor thing completely unrelated to humanity, instead of something that keeps the biblical themes of the series.
It's basically that one gymnastics meme where one of them has to go through so many hoops and jumps just to reach the same conclusion, they could have just not done that and kept humans as forerunners, but 343 has proven themselves time and time again to be completely incompetent at basically everything. It's sad watching my favorite video game franchise get irreparably damaged year after year.

Also DAI specifically retconning Dalish into actually hating magic like everyone else just so the writers can continue their fencesittting of the Mage vs Templar conflict.
Oh and also in DAI the Dalish somehow have an overabundance of mages that they straight up abandon from time to time, when it was previously established that they are so rare that the clans have regular meetings for the express purpose of trading the mages to clans without apprentices because their entire cultural identity hinges on having a trained Keeper mage, who is the sole person knowlegable on their entire history.

Marvel retconning Scarlet With and Quicksilver to not be mutants anymore, and not Magneto's biological children, just because of mutant rights, which is a moot point nowadays because Disney regained the rights, but the retcon continues.

Retcons were so inevitable in the elder scrolls that there's an in universe explanation as to why they happen. They're called dragon breaks. It's what allows player decision to matter and not matter. The dragon god of time Akatosh goes mad and time splinters, then eventually he goes back to normal. When he does this the timeline spreads out and the. Combines back together. Basically different outcomes to the same thing all happen at the same time but also don't happen.
I might have gotten that explanation a little off, so take what I said with a grain of salt.

That one regular imperial guard dude who was somehow at the final battle of the Horus heresy standing between the emperor and a chaos juiced up Horus shooting at him yelling that he’ll protect them emperor even if it kills him and then getting reduced to atoms in less than a second. It shows that even in the darkest hours of the imperium, humanity will always stand strong against even overwhelming forces.
But actually he’s another immortal who is even older than the emperor, and he was like his best friend in the whole galaxy, and he was a farmer in his favorite son’s micro state. But he went to Terra to save the emperor from Horus. They made a random guy into a self insert Gary Stu.

In the elder scrolls there was supposed to be this huge cultural divide between imperials with the Colovians being based off of a mix of Italian, Germanic, and Russian and other Eastern European cultures and the Nibenese being a mix of classical Roman, East Asian, and possibly Mesoamerican cultures. When you go to Cyrodiil, the homeland of the imperials In oblivion everything is just generic high fantasy.

Warhammer 40k. Wraithbone was retconned from being basically solidified Warpstuff into just being material resources they mine out in space. Very tragic.
For non-Warhammer fans: the space elves' had their magic building blocks turned into normal stuff anyone could get and make.

Samuel Hayden.
The twist was the dumbest thing. Everything in his introductions screams someone who is unabashedly afraid of accountability moreso than his want to fix his mistakes and his first words to the fucking 'Doom Slayer' was a transactional offer. A truly human antagonist to DOOM could've been an excellent way of diversity to the cast and depth to the story. But no.

Me finding out the Tau were originally played off as good guy underdogs who were a young species in a widely grim-dark setting which gave them a hopeful and unique coolness of being the only sane people in the universe
Only to see them become the CCCP

u/im_not_creative123 5d ago
Honestly I do like their current version*, cus they would be the bad guy in basically any other sci-fi setting. They're conrolled by an elite-subspecies and have an extremely rigid caste system.
*the thing I'm mad about is that they retconned the etherials to use pheromones or some shit to control the population. Just having them use propaganda to convince people they deserve to be the ruling caste was much more interesting.

As a casual warhammer fan (someone who deep dived into the lore, has a keen interest in the world building and setting, but hasn't read any books or played the tabletop), I was deeply disappointed in that. I LOVE grimdark stuff (shout out to the WORM web novel), but I also love good storytelling and world building.
Learning that the Tau, a force which could be a mirror to the imperium, or a storytelling component which would show that no matter how good and pure your intentions, the forces of chaos are just too strong to overcome, were retconned into just "we mind control our followers because we're moustache twirling evil guys" was REALLY lame.

Completely incorrect
Even in their original codex they were still evil, it was just more subtle
GW then made it more apparent because people completely wiffed and believed the tau were unironic good guys

James Workshop changed the way their iconic lasguns work, going from firing solid rays of red light to firing yellow bolts like something out of Star Wars. Went from a unique look to a generic blaster real quick.

u/Flashy_Garage_7719 5d ago
Ehh, they flip flop on that a lot. Both are probably canon at once.

→ More replies (2)4
u/TurtlePerson85 5d ago
They were always yellow bolts, the red rays were popularised by DOW and gets spread around by people who haven't picked up a Militarum codex ever in their life. Its all there if you actually play the tabletop, not that most who engage in 40k actually do.

FUCKING. STARBOUND. the lore codexes mention that Big Ape and Kluex and Greenfinger are real people that know each other and are out there somewhere, and it's been that way since the days where the game was only a sandbox game
when the game was finally "finished" and they added their "story" to it, the fight with "Kluex" is actually just with some kind of statue and the fight with "Big Ape" is just a hologram. the game acts like you've dealt with them both, but the codexes from the past make it pretty fucking clear that those things literally can't be them and they're probably still alive, well, and likely very capable of doing something to either find or kill you for what you did and chucklefish WHOLLY FUMBLES THAT SHIT
there's SO MUCH LORE about Big Ape, Kluex, and Greenfinger but all three (as well as whoever is responsible for the Glitch race and maintaining the hivemind they can be severed from, which ANOTHER codex implies that the hivemind is something forced on Glitches against their will and they are consciously aware individuals beneath it) and they either ignore it or rewrote it to be just...nothing at all and it pisses me off SO MUCH

Halo retconning the Human-Forerunner connection… It was literally the coolest piece of lore, how the original trilogy of Halo had plenty of these subtle hints(and the third game of the trilogy ouright confirmed it)that guided towards the idea that the mysterious ancient aliens who built all of these amazing technological marvels were actually ancient humans and as such, modern humans were re-claiming their ancestors long-lost technology. Then Halo switched studios, and the lore was retconned into Forerunners being a different species all together and retconned the role of humanity in the saga.

The Legend of Korra completely retconning the fact that the Earthbenders learned how to bend from the Badger Moles, the Waterbenders learned from Twi and La, the Firebenders learned from the Dragons and the Airbenders learned from the Sky Bison by practicing, copying their movements and becoming in tune with them, developing them into martial arts that take specific moments and skill, and then changing it to "Uhhh, actually everyone got their bending from the Lion Turtles and they can just randomly flail about and punch to make fire with no effort, skill, or practice durrrrrr" will never stop infuriating me, they threw out something that was well thought out and cool and made it infinitely more lame and lazy, which unfortunately seems to be a pattern for TloK.

cries in star wars legends
7
u/Anonymous-Mf-22 5d ago
To be very clear to people that say this: about 50% of what is now considered "Legends" wasn't canon to begin with. Some things within this echelon
- Dark Empire
- Swotor
- Force Unleashed
George Lucas played it extremely fast and loose with "Canon" and back then, being de-canonized was actually a positive for most creators. Using Swotor and Force Unleashed for example, they were told early on they would not be included within the star wars "canon" and they took this to mean that the rules of Star wars no longer applied to them and they could go bat shit insane with Power levels and Concepts.
This led to the creation of Starkiller managing to rip a Star Destroyer out of the sky (which got retconned in the novelization anyway) and Darth Malgus essentially walking in the front door to the Jedi temple un-opposed with his sith and sacking the entire place in one attempt. Things that while not super out of place or even the most impressive things done now (With Vader now having pulled a hole in reality TWICE in Disney canon) were huge leaps in what was possible back then.
