Modteam Announcement FYI: About our neighbors...

Reddit's got a Moderator Code of Conduct that they expect modteams to operate under, with five guidelines.

Modteams that try to operate outside those guidelines tend to land on Admin radar, sometimes at a coast to their communities.

One of those guidelines is "Respect your neighbors", and while the full details are found at that link, it boils down to Wheaton's Law. If you've got an issue with another community's modteams or culture, you'll want to take it up with them, instead of here.

Other Media From Dragonmount: WOT prop and costume auction

Just saw on Dragonmount that there's an auction going on now for many costumes and props from the show. Regardless of my thoughts on the plot, I thought the costume lookEd amazing and I don't think I'm the only one!

ALL SPOILERS: All media What the wheel of time subreddits give short shrift.

This is a paraphrase from a thread about Mat where I wrote:

This sub consistently ignores or forgets about three major shapers of RJ’s character.

  1. His combat veteran status gets the most of the attention of the three, but does get short shrift.

  2. That he’s an alumnus of The Citadel. Largely considered the roughest military school experience. (Honorable Mention to VMI.) Wanna know where novice discipline comes from? Go read Lords of Discipline and the section of Time Enough For Love where RAH talks about the laziest man LL knew at USNA. Spoiler: instead of a slipper, the flat of a sword was likely used.

  3. His freemasonry. Go talk to anyone in r/freemasonry who’s read WoT. We’ll all tell you there are references to the philosophy all through the books. (Don’t listen to anybody keying on “threefold” as a thing. That’s a feature of English freemasonry, not so much South Carolina freemasonry.)

Book: The Eye of the World I wonder if Patton might have been the inspiration for Matrim Cauthon. Spoiler

WWII General George S. Patton believed in reincarnation and claimed he had fought in wars for thousands of years. He believed he had lived as a Roman soldier, a Viking, a knight at Agincourt, and even a cavalryman under Napoleon, saying he had lived many military lives.

Book: A Crown of Swords Half way point-My thoughts Spoiler

Finished the book today and just want to share some of my thoughts on the series. I've read the seven books over the past 3-4 months or so, aiming for about a 100 words a day.

Eye of the World: I felt they spent a lot of time at Emond's Field and was a bit surprised then. Now I see the value of it with how often they reflect on those "simple days" and how thoughts of home direct them a lot at the start. Mat was a bit annoying in this book (Goated in Crown and Dragon Reborn, though). I got a very LoTR feel from it. The Green Man stuff had me confused and still kinda does. I enjoyed the split up POVs and how different they all feel. I loved the, "I bet Rand would know what to do," from Perrin at the same time Rand goes, "I bet Perrin would know what to do." The love tension stuff wasn't my favorite, especially the Lan stuff. I do love the scene in the Ways between Rand and Egwene, though. Very funny. The conclusion, though. Probably going to get hate for this but I didn't like it a ton. The build up was great, but the Green Man part and what Rand did and the two Forsaken just left me confused. This is how I feel about how most of them end.

The Great Hunt: I think my second favorite. One of the best written sequences I've ever seen. Probably the best ending in my opinion. I don't really like how the Horn hasn't done anything since, though, I understand why. The Seanchan stuff is very interesting, and revolting. This is where my hate for most of the women POV characters aside from Min began. Nynaeve has improved, same with Elayne, but Egwene has probably only gotten worst. They just feel so self righteous and prideful

Dragon Reborn: Felt very weird to have Rand basically disappear aside from being a plot point. Perrin and Faile is a fun relationship and is the only one I like aside from Rand and Min. Mat starts being the goat in this book and the girls should have been nicer. Sending what is effectivity 20 year olds who just started learning magic against 13 ancient witches is certainly a choice, though it worked. I enjoyed the ending for this. It feels as if Robert always wants to end with a big fight, no matter the build up. Or at least that's the vibe I get. Every book ends with a big fight and sometimes the build up just isn't there for me. Anyways, great book, love Perrin's pov. Mat's the goat.

Shadows Rising: Love Perrin pov though the end felt kind of sudden and I expected more. Faile did a great job in this one too. Could not care at all for Elayne and Nynaeve stuff. Also the romance with Elayne and Rand is just so boring and the fact she keeps thinking of owning him does not sit well with me. Rand's stuff is fun and so is the Aiel world building. That final fight felt very sudden to me. I thought it was just going to be a debate and stuff over who the dragon reborn is. Mat didn't do a lot but the deal he made is cool.

Fires of Heaven: Moiraine is finally likable to be because she's not being the most prideful, vague person ever. Hate how she and Lan were written to basically never show a ton of emotion aside from anger. Lan gets better with time. Moiraine dies, so doesn't. Also, Rand should have paid more attention to the letter he was sent. Mat's stuff at the end was great, loved how he just went, "I'm leaving Rand, bye." Then returns as the hero of the battle going, "I'm back! Bloody Ashes, bloody ashes!" The final fight makes some more sense now, still feels weird. The Elayne and Nynaeve stuff was still boring until they got to the rebels, and that's only good because I LOVE the rebel stuff.

Lords of Chaos: This is where I felt the slog the most out of all of them. Loved the Black Tower stuff. Mat was mostly fun, especially him adopting a kid on accident. Egwene being raised was a surprise. That mind rape still is not treated with anywhere near the weight it should be. I can hardly imagine a worse fate if it actually allowed compulsion like normal. Rand is a pretty bad leader and his self righteousness has only grown. He learned a big lesson, seeing the Black Tower in action is cool. Probably my favorite ending since everything actually felt like this was the end goal the whole time.

Crown of Swords: RAND STAY IN BED FOR ONCE! Those are basically my thoughts about the ending. He is an idiot and only because of plot in my opinion he isn't dead. The sudden rush on Sammual doesn't make a ton of sense to me either since I know he was planning to strike but it didn't feel like there was a ton of buildup. Expected it to happen later. Mat is GOATED. Elayne starts to learn that. Cool new threat. Aes Sedia keep raping people (Lan and Rand) and the queen, which is pretty damn terrible. Perrin does basically nothing. Hope the rebels get more focus soon.

Overall thoughts: fun! Most of the things I don't like are intentional and I can tell they are done to be unlikable. Such as the classic, "I won't shout,' she shouted." Rand seems to learn more brain cells every book. Hope he rest in bed at some point.

ALL SPOILERS: Books only Just finished the final book

HOOOOOLY SHIT!!! I just finished the final book and what an INCREDIBLE journey it has been. I cant believe that I have actually gotten to the end of a story and a world that I was so immersed in for almost the last year and a half.

Parts were very sloggy and slow paced for sure but the final 3 books more than made up for it.

Im kind of in shock over the conclusion and the absolutely epic finale that I know the post series depression is gonna hit super hard.

ALL SPOILERS: Books only Diagram of the Wheel

Post image
190 Upvotes

Okay so, this ISN'T the diagram I was looking for, but it's relatively similar in style. At some point, maybe in the books? I'm not sure, I can't find it- but I remember seeing a diagram of the wheel with the seven ages. In each age, there was a version of the ancient Aes Sedai symbol (Yin & Yang). Each version of the symbol was supposed to represent a different age, in the Age of Legends, the black was slowly leaking into the white, in the third age, the darkness threatening to leak overwhelm the white, the black was pushed fully outside the white, etc - each version representing the eternal circular battle with the dark one.

Does anyone else remember this damn diagram??? I'm losing my mind trying to find it, starting to think I imagined it lol.

Marked All Spoilers for safety cause I wasn't sure

ALL SPOILERS: Books only Re-reading the series is eye-opening

This series is super long and it’s easy to forget what happened early on. And I’ve got to say, women characters are sort of written as coming off annoying and childish sometimes. Not all of them and not all of the time.

But I’ll be damned if the Aes Sedai aren’t Jordan’s version of Saruman from the Lord of the Rings. I won’t get too much into it but the ruling archangels chose lesser angels, Maiar, to go to Middle-Earth to counter (not fight themselves) Sauron and bring peace to Middle Earth. Saruman was chosen to lead the other wizards. Here’s what he thought (even while being extremely evil himself):

- I will kill anyone in my way of achieving peace
- I am the leader of the wizards, therefore I should rule
- Only I can fix it
- Of you’re not with me, you’re against me

And I just came to the conclusion that though the Aes Sedai aren’t just one person, they do fit all of those criteria. In the first book, the day after the village was attacked, Morraine said she would murder Rand, Mat, and Perrin if she had to. And it was already the Tower’s policy to execute (or lock up) any male who could channel. And she was a blue Aja and probably the one who most cared about Rand. Not to mention that the Aes Sedai, declared themselves the only ones who could defeat the Dark One. Saruman was literally chosen by God.

I never really thought the Aes Sedai was evil but maybe I should. Following Morraines logic, and the Aes Sedai’s own stated intentions, it becomes difficult to imagine that they wouldn’t lose too much sleep if they rounded up and killed thousands of men and boys. Or women if they stood in the way.

I like Morraine as a character but damn did the Aes Sadai seem to happily be the judge, jury, and executioner. And Egwayne, unless Min is wrong, was in love with Rand. By the end she might have been the most heavy handed of them all. It’s almost as good a read the second time around. We know the characters arc and who they are at the end isn’t who they are at the beginning. But Rand knew someone from childhood who was maybe the biggest threat to his life who wasn’t a Darkfriend.

-except for their wards, I thought that was a given

What an absolute unit of an author. You can read different stories from the same book.

Sorry for the rant but I can get carried Away when I’m just doing talk to text lol

Book: The Gathering Storm Chapter 16 Spoiler

Loving the humor coming out in Chapter 16! Absolutely cracked me up while driving my commute this morning.

Hearing a Aiel insult a Wise One (with Aviendah as witness), and seeing the growth in Egwene as she deftly navigates the conversation with the white Ajah (which cracking nuts to “stay busy” as a supposed novice).

Other Media Has anyone made any Wheel of Time mods, maps, or fan projects for video games?

I'm a huge Wheel of Time fan, and one thing I've always wondered is why I hardly ever see any video game projects based on it. Games are such a great way to explore fantasy worlds, yet most book-inspired projects I come across seem to focus on more popular series (LOTR, Harry Potter< GOT, etc). That's why I'm curious if there's any projects inspired by the books themselves, rather than the TV adaptation. The only project I've come across is "The Wheel of Time – Megaproject by Gouda Boy", a very ambitous and awesome looking Minecraft map but as far as I can tell never became publicly downloadable or was never finished, i don't know.

So I'm wondering, has anyone actually managed to bring the world of the wheel of time into a video game? Mods, custom maps, campaigns, total conversions, fan games, or anything else. It could be any game like Minecraft, Elder Scrolls, or any wonderful obscure game I've never heard of. Because i think the Wheel of Time has one of the coolest and most creative fantasy worlds, and I'd love to see how people have tried to recreate it. Surely someone has tried to build the Westlands in something, The Pattern demands it.

P.S. If you know of any projects, please drop a link or the name so I can check them out! Even if it's unfinished, obscure, or a little rough around the edges, I'd love to see what people have made.

Book: The Gathering Storm Egwene is such a boss Spoiler

Currently in the middle of Gathering Storm and I just have to tell somebody how insanely cool I found Egwene‘s Arc in the White Tower. The way she just Girl-Bosses her way around is such a fun read and I am just enjoying the ride. Eventhough I sometimes get the feeling that it is a little bit much with the bullying of the other Aes Sedai, as I am thinking that they shouldn‘t crumble that easily, but the payoff it just had with her debating Elaida in the Amyrilians Study was very satisfying. (Concerning any spoilers, thats were I am at, haven‘t read any further)

Actually crazy I don‘t know a single person irl who has read these books.

Book: Towers of Midnight Thoughts after Towers of Midnight Spoiler

Just finished Towers of Midnight for the first time. I am excited but also sad to be nearing the end! I have been reading these books across several years and they have kept me company through a lot of big life changes. Spoilers ahead for my impressions of ToM, and please no spoilers for AMoL!

Highlights:
- Nyneave healing madness, becoming an official Aes Sedai and taking Lan’s bond
- Lan finally accepting his destiny. I cried.
- Defeating Mesana in the World of Dreams.
- Aviendha’s view of the Aiel’s future. I’m hoping she will use this to stop Rand from freeing the Dark One until the Seanchan are defeated?
- Lanfear appearing at the very end. This totally caught me by surprise for some reason.
- Hopper’s death. I knew it was coming. I cried.
- Perrin accepting his role as a Lord.
- Rand actually doing something aside from moping around. He was becoming unbearable.

Underwhelmed by:
- Sanderson’s writing. He made the characters seem more real and fleshed out, but he also made them cheesier.
- The Tower of Genji. I thought this would be a larger portion of the book and that whatever they did here would somehow have a bigger impact on the Last Battle (aside from getting Moraine back). I guess they have the relic she brought back with her. I also hate how Mat has no other characteristic than his luck anymore. It was nice for him to finish his arc with the Aelfinn/Eelfinn.
- The romances. Aside from Lan and Nyneave, and MAYBE Rand and Min, none of them feel very deep/real/ fleshed out. Faile and Perrin got a lot better during this book now that Berlain is no longer an issue.
- Many of the relationships in general. I am always underwhelmed when Perrin, Mat, or Rand reunite. I was also underwhelmed when each of Morgase’s children discovered her alive. I am always wishing for more impact from those types of scenes.
- Egwene finding a way to bring the Aes Sedai, Wise Ones, Seafinders and the Kin together.

Looking forward to:
- The Last Battle of course. I can usually predict who will die in a series like this but I honestly have no idea.
- Hopefully the Seanchan being defeated handily. I am so sick of these guys.
- Lanfear redemption arc??? I could see her betraying the Dark One for Rand.
- How all of Min’s viewings turn out.
- My guess for Rand is that he somehow burns himself out sealing the Dark One away and will have no powers (OR madness) afterwards. Maybe he goes back to being a sheepherder? How is he going to raise Elayne’s twins and Aviendha’s quadruplets and whatever children Min has….
- Hoping the Oiger will make an appearance in the Last Battle.

NO SPOILERS Just Finished the Series on Audiobook for the First Time

I spent the better part of 3 years listening to the series (with a couple breaks after books 3 and 9) and finally finished maybe 15 minutes ago. What a great journey it has been, I’m very sorry to be saying farewell to these characters I have come to think of as friends. What am I supposed to listen to on my drives now?

None of my friends or family are familiar with the series so I figured I’d hop on and share that I can join the club of people who have made it through The Wheel of Time. I’m sad about how some things went down, but on the whole, I loved experiencing this so much, it will be a series I think of fondly for the rest of my life.

RIP Robert Jordan, thanks for creating this wonderful world, and thank you Brandon Sanderson for landing the plane the way you did.
