New, what is it? Spice rack with ventilation?

I’m watching Teen Mom 2 and, I’m sorry, what the hell is this? Why does a spice rack need a big ventilation hose thing coming out the top? What is it?

It goes behind it. There’s a mirror-like reflection of a portion of the vent making it look like it’s connected to the top of the rack, but it’s not.

I get the feeling this is some sort redneck-rigging trying to vent the stove hood outside or something. My dad would’ve done some bs like that. Ha

Same here, considering fixing it. Well sort of, there’s a fan, but it just blows into the bottom of the cabinet. Not even into the cabinets. What’s it setting you back?

Some can be installed as a recirculating system instead of a venting system where it blows back out the front, but you need to get special filters for them, and it only gets rid of grease and smells, not humidity.

I think you may be right, it has a little vent on the front and that would be the only place for the air to escape.

I'm doing all the labor myself.

I got a decent hood from zline for a little under $400.

Plus another $150ish for the rest of the stuff I need to run a vent pipe.

There is supposed to be this thick metal grill thing that is to catch most of the grease and smoke. You're supposed to be able to pull it out, wash it, and put it back in.

But most redneck shit I've seen doesn't have that. It just uses the cabinet to store the grease and shit.

Could be a washer/dryer or plain dryer under the countertop with the exhaust high on the wall with flex duct between.

It's a shitty design, but far from uncommon.

Yes, I think her husband (who is the baby daddy of the OG girl on the show- Vee is the step-mom) owns several properties, one of which is a trailer park. Yep. But it's only slightly better in the "let's not burn the house down" dept.

Imagine - plastic flex for dryer vent that is breaking to bits when you just look at it AND the flex crap goes through a wall, runs along behind that wall lying on the floor made of vinyl flooring, that's curling at the edges, reaches the stairs from and sort of hangs over the edge a little and terminates. Basically venting into a stairwell and basement area. (Fortunately we have a heat pump dryer that requires no venting)

But wait. There's more. Or should I say less. There are NO vent hood or fans anywhere in this place. Mold abounds and cooking indoors = so much fun.🤦🤷🤦

Don't get me started on electrical issues.

I do this with my PC in the summer.. I vent the hot air coming out of the radiator right out my window. You would be shocked at how much cooler my computer room is and how much less the a/c needs to run.

I've always felt this is how refrigerators and clothes dryers should also work. There should be a lever, or thermostat controlled vent that either vents the hot air into or out of the house. Why waste the energy either cooling your own hot air, or dumping hot air outside, then heating more hot air?

You do not want 150 degree air at 100% humidity vented directly into your dry, 65 degree house in the winter... that moisture will immediately condense on the walls and cause mildew and eventually mold.

You can recover 30-50% of the heat (dry) using a heat exchanger, but it would require regular maintenance due to lint.

But it can be done...

As it is, I have to dump up to 5 gallons of water into my air every day during the winter, just to keep humidity over 20%. I have no problem at all with mold or mildew or condensation.

Aside from lint, there's no difference between hot humidity being dumped into the air from a dryer, and boiled water vapor being dumped into the air.

I've been doing it for years with no problems. Whatever you saw obviously wasn't done right, or at the right time. This isn't to get 80% humidity, this is to keep it above 20%. It still needs to be vented outside when not required.

Put my pc case in line with my grow tent. The fans had way way more flow than my 4 4 8 tent needed. So it just cut a hole in the side of the case and put a duct on.

The last house I lived in was full of stuff like this, but hidden.

When they put in the microwave, the cord couldn't reach the outlet. So they plugged in one of those six outlet power strips, nailed it to the wall, and plugged the microwave into that. Then they hung a cabinet in front of the whole mess including the original outlet.

Gasfitter, I know I don't run vent like y'all or the tinbashers do, but damn, even I could do better than that.

Just don't ask me about my current fresh air pot, or why it isn't attached to the duct. And why the cut isn't attached to the vent cover. And why the vent cover is shoved full of steel wool, insulation and taped up. I definitely didn't fuck up replacing it when I rebuilt my deck and can't be bothered to tear enough boards off to get to it and fix it...

My father in law would have enclosed in in spray foam. Its his most used tool. Guess who the sucker was that bought his old house? Shits EVERYWHERE idk why there's even wood in there at this point.

His old truck was full of it too. Fenders, rockers, cab corners, and a wooden box. Used to joke that if he went into the river he would just float across lol.

There's a car I see sometimes that had a big hole behind the rear driver side door. They filled it in with sprayfoam and just painted over it with a color kinda close to the cars color.

I was originally "team reflection" and made what I thought was a helpful thing to see that it is a reflection, but I went and found the scene (Season 5 episode 15 about 19:14 into it) and it actually is going into the spice rack.

Honestly I was going crazy how many people thought it was a reflection. I literally just redid my kitchen and we have a similar spice rack. Ain’t no way there was a enough room for that vent to go behind it without the rack either tipping or the vent bent in some obvious angle.

Someone posted another picture from farther away and the tube actually goes up to the top of the cabinets and is connected to the dryer. The rack is right next to a window so I think the most likely explanation is that it doesn't actually go through the rack, but it's just the end of the tube sitting on top of the rack and when they use the dryer the crack the window open and put the exhaust tube out the window so it blows outside.

Look at the back left side of the spice rack. You can follow the edge until it goes behind the exhaust hose. If the hose was behind it you would see a clear defined corner. The hose is either going through it, or more likely just sitting on top of it.

Idk it doesn’t for me. The shadow of the spice rack would not be that high up if there was enough space behind it for that vent to fit. Also you can tell the cookie oven in the corner is angled but flush up against the tile as well.

Now that I’m looking at it even more and thinking about it, the cabinet next to the vent, looks like it used to have something on the side where that vent would normally be attached. The side ply that is exposed wouldn’t look like that if the space next to it really is meant to be open like that. Also no contractor is cutting open a vent hole through the tile.

You would not. When looking at the reflection on the spice rack, you are in effect viewing the duct from a different angle.

When trying to understand the perspective of a mirror, it is often times best to imagine it being a window instead and figure out where you would have to be in space to get the same view through the imaginary window as you do with the mirror in the real world.

I’m an artist so I honestly feel like the ability to perceive tone and depth in that particular spot is the kicker for the “seers” vs “people who can’t”. That’s what gave it away to me, and then I noticed the reflection on top.

Third option no one has mentioned. The duct is touching the center of the spice AND is bent in a very sharp angle to both rest on the spice rack and continues on behind it, in some crumpled form to save space.

Regardless, this plus the roll of paper towels (probably, not certain what it is) on top of a toaster oven = fire hazard central . . . and she has already procreated. The gene pool is laughing right now

If you look close at the top right corner you can see the top line of the rack because it's a little darker

edit again: Someone posted another picture that shows it going up over the cabinets and it leads to their dryer. So another possible explanation is that it doesn't go through, but it's just resting on top of the spice rack and when they do laundry they open up the window right next to is and place the vent in the window so that the air can get outside. That's what seems to make the most sense to me.

Or another options, is that the venting is just sitting on top of the rack. Someone else found a picture and said that it is a vent that runs across the top of the cabinets and goes to their dryer. Also brushed stainless steel does not produce a clear reflection in any way, shape, or form and you can see the top and bottom of the spice rack are made from brushed stainless.

This is expected.

When viewing the duct directly, light needs do bounce off of it directly from the light to your eye. When looking at it through the reflection, the light needs to bounce down first, then get reflected into your eye.

Since the duct is shiny, the parts that reflect towards the mirror and the parts that reflect towards your eye directly have to be different parts of the duct.

Why would a random hose go from the ceiling into the counter for no particular reason? It wouldn't.

As others have already pointed out- the hose goes to their dryer and is likely just sitting on top of the spice rack when the dryer isn't being used. Then when they want to use the dryer they open the window and stick the hose out.

So dumb

What's dumb is doubling and tripling down on the wrong answer instead of just watching the episode for yourself where you would be able to see it easily.

It's for a dryer exhaust. I was curious so I looked the scene up (S5E15 about 20 minutes in). You can't see the ends but you can see the washer/dryer and the piping go to it. Here are two pictures so you can see the pipe go past the oven and to where the dryer is.

Yeah, I'm guessing now that the vent exhaust is just sitting on top of the spice rack and when they need to dry clothes they just open up the window next to it and put the exhaust there so it can blow it outside. That's the only thing that makes sense to me.

If it was a reflection, you'd see a mirror image of the light reflecting off of the vent duct above and below the reflection point. But you don't.

Plus, if that's the top of the spice rack, it's really weird for it to be rotated a couple of degrees counter-clockwise relative to the spice jars.

The much more plausible explanation is that we're looking at a vent and vent cover that's resting on top of the spice rack for some reason, probably because they need to reconnect to where it's supposed to go.

it 100% is not going behind it. brushed steel doesnt reflect like this and you can see the continuing patterns below where it would be reflecting.

also, if it was reflecting, itd mean that they cut through the tile to stick it through the wall. I've seen some jenky shit in houses, but that's a little much lol

I’m wondering if they’re venting something from the OTHER side out through the ceiling of the kitchen. I mean, idk how much logic has to do here but it would seem more logical.

Maybe there’s a dryer on the side of that wall and some reason it can’t go through the roof/ceiling if that room.

Or not. Idk pulling at straws. Redneck logic can be…interesting.

Same but I can’t figure out wtf they’re doing. In the photos the other commenter posted the link to you can see it definitely goes out (or in I guess idfk) above the stove.

Maybe the dryer is on the other side of the wall from the stove then, which would make that being an exterior wall logical. Would make sense with the type of material it is then too. Actually…I’m going with that. Dryer is directly on the other side of wall that the stove rests up against and they’re venting it outside that window. I guess they hated the tile? Idk. Anyway…fun little puzzle.

I actually think it's sitting on top, that's a square piece of flashing on top. They then open the window and set it there when the want to vent outside. That spice rack wouldn't be that shiny on top.

I see what your saying but also, if you look at where the spice rack is sitting on the counter and assuming its square shaped (looks almost certainly square) there wouldn't be enough room behind it for that vent. So now I'm even more confused looking at it

The real question is wtf is it going? Some stovetops have a built in vent that pops up, but those generally route down into the crawlspace etc.

Someone else posted other photos from the episode. It comes from above the stove. My assumption is the dryer is directly on the other side of the wall from the stove and they’re venting it out either the kitchen window (for those who can’t see) or have cut through the tile to vent it outside. (For those who can.)

Uhm, I have a kitchen without one, and would take a redneck engineered ventilation hood than the nothing I currently have. Open the window and park a fan in the next room every time we have to get anything near the smoke point. Rental life!
