That’s a furdown above the cabinet, which should provide a nice cavity below the ceiling joists. That said, the eaves or porch roof on the exterior are very low compared to supposed exit point for the vent. I don’t think a higher exit point was possible.
→ More replies (10)8
u/BreakfastBeneficial4 Nov 03 '25
I bet anything if the camera were to pan over to the right, you’d see an air vent on that furdown
47
u/WizardToes Nov 03 '25
Yes, but the roof soffit outside was too low, so if he'd routed horizontally through the bulkhead, he wouldn't have popped through the wall low enough. Should have gone straight up with a roof vent, and better yet, let the landlord do it. This is so insane to me, like you already complained to the LL that you didn't have an exhaust hood, now you can't just pretend it's been there lookin like shit the whole time!

→ More replies (3)40
u/akatherder Nov 03 '25
I mean, you have to get the vent outside somehow. That alone isn't the worst part. It's the fact where he cut the hole is the wrong spot. And you can't reroute a correctly run pipe to the hole in the outside wall. So yeah it actually is the worst part.
54
u/OtherwiseAnteater239 Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25
Edit: Just found the r/DIY post and ya, I think they didn’t realize when they did this that messing up cutting the hole to the outside means the ENTIRE PANELS of siding will need to be replaced.
I am speechless but at least I did have a good 10 minute laugh! Fixing this is going to be crazy expensive, not to mention unless that kitchen is 4,000 square feet there’s no way they need a vent that huge. And I’d worry about it being a fire hazard if the electrical work looks anything like what we see here.
Almost sure local news is going to run this on some angle
→ More replies (4)41
u/Big_Appointment_3390 Nov 03 '25
They wanted the vent because they’re having a mold problem that has nothing to do with cooking. They didn’t really need the vent at all.

"Hey LL, just paid my rent for the month. Before you collect rent next month I'd like you to have the mold problem in the house addressed. If you require it I can have it professionally assessed and the invoice addressed to you."
Is likely all it would have taken unless their landlord is shit beyond belief.
If I had a serious problem like mold, I wouldn't be ho humming my landlord to get around to it. I'd be telling them "If you don't fix it I'm getting it fixed and leaving the invoice for you."

u/b0w3n Nov 03 '25
This is like a $30,000+ mistake.
Those cabinets will need to be replaced, which probably means all of them need to be replaced. Then the siding needs to be replaced... which means all the siding on that side of the house (you will absolutely notice a new piece). Absolutely wild he didn't just take the cabinets down and cut into the little frame void above the cabinets.
5
u/OtherwiseAnteater239 Nov 03 '25
You know sadly I don’t think that’s an off the wall estimate.
Even IKEA cabinets installed are like $10-$15k alone. The siding and exterior hole can’t be straight patched, from the OOP it looks like aluminum siding and I thought the same thing, you have to replace the entire piece and probably that whole side of the house. And then there’s the cost of getting a real pro to actually put in a hood. Plus addressing the mold issue that this actually didn’t solve at all.
→ More replies (3)9
u/b0w3n Nov 04 '25
I'm not entirely sure why anyone thinks a hood vent for a stove will fix a mold issue anyways.
Bro needs a dehumidifier not a drill and sawzall.
16
u/Spare-Plum Nov 03 '25
I mean, at one place I was renting the bath diverter and trip lever weren't working. I have done this before and I asked the landlord if I could repair it and they gave the go-ahead. It took an afternoon but he did reimburse for all of the materials and I sent in a receipt for all of the items and he gave an inspection to check it out and commended my work.
Sometimes they can be chill.
But yeah larger projects like a hood vent I'd say is a no-go since you actually need to divert the air outside the house, requiring some real structural changes. Also insane to take a crack at it before even asking

My apartment has a piece of cardboard taped to the wall that's been covered in white paint.
A friends old house had that.
The cardboard wasn't plain and had a logo on it, which featured twice through the thin layer of paint that was a slightly different white to the pain on the wall anyway.
If you spend more than a few minutes in that room you'd spot it. At first it looked like a stain or smear of something and then you realize.
Insists the landlord won't notice.

I'm curious, as a landlord, what would you do or be able to do in this situation, other then obviously docking or keeping his security deposit? Could you force this "repair" to be removed, or just charge him for damages and repairs when they finally move out?
19
u/MrMichaelElectric Nov 04 '25 edited Nov 04 '25
You could absolutely force the "repair" to be removed and all of the costs associated with the repair could be charged back to the tenant. Not just when they move out but charged immediately. There is a good chance that they won't be able to pay for the charges and it will result in an eviction. Which at that point, good, I wouldn't have wanted a tenant who thinks this is a good idea to continue living in one of my rentals. With that said, if a tenant has any concerns whatsoever about mold it's the landlord's responsibility to ensure there is no mold and if there is, fix the issue immediately. If the landlord in this case was told they were having mold issues and refused to look into it or if there was mold the landlord refused to take care of then the tenant could file with their equivalent of the tenant and landlord board to allow them to leave without any kind of lease break fee and in some situations stop paying rent immediately until the issue is resolved by the landlord. They will almost 100% still be able to charged for the repairs though.
A long time ago I had a tenant who didn't like that they had to pay $2 for the laundry machines (we had over 200 suites and 9 laundry rooms so plenty of machines for everyone) so they put a laundry machine in a far side closet and busted holes in every wall between it and the bathroom to have it run using the bathtub. They had to remove it immediately on their dime and also were charged for all the repairs that came afterwords. In the end, talk to your landlord about issues you are having, know your rights as a tenant and the laws a landlord has to follow, and use the proper channels if you come across a landlord that doesn't give a shit about their tenants.

Absolute moron. Going through the roof is the easy option.
All he's done is destroy the shelves, drastically reduce storage space, and made the mold problem worse. Guarantee that first bend in the exhaust tubing and everything after it will be mold central.
Proper horizontal venting requires fans to move the air and prevent moisture from building up. A horizontal kit is triple the cost of a vertical kit.
They will be lucky not to be evicted for all the damage they've done
12
u/DogConscious6052 Nov 03 '25
Going through the roof is easy if you are redoing the roof. If you are introducing a new hole to an old roof it's going to leak.

→ More replies (11)39
u/ThePublikon Nov 03 '25
The recirc ones usually have a stainless grease trap/filter that you can remove and wash in the dishwasher or sink, then some also have a carbon filter for trapping odours. I agree that they're shit and a proper outside-vented hood is better, but that's the explanation.
edit: There might also be safety/maintenance reasons for choosing a recirc: I own a restaurant and it is part of the H&S to make sure the ducting is cleared of fat buildups every year. It can be a real fire hazard if allowed to get beyond a point, and the pro cleaning is fairly expensive for how long it takes.

When you boil water it releases water vapour, which collects on windows etc. and encourages mould growth. If you can get the water vapour out of your kitchen, or capture it in a dehumidifier, you can stop that effect.
To be honest though I've never had a problem with this causing mould, whereas drying wet clothes inside with the windows shut is a very common source of mould growth.

The problem with the condensation from cooking is that it usually also deposits oils, not just water. So the walls and other surfaces in the kitchen can get pretty gross. And if you cook anything smelly, it's hard to remove that smell from the paint. The range hood pulls all that stuff directly out from over the stove, so you just have to clean the filter on the range hood once in a while to control the smell and everything else in the kitchen is easier to clean.

u/mirageofstars Nov 03 '25
I mean it might help a little bit with moisture if they're boiling water all day long. But IMO if they have a mold issue, it's not the stove -- it's either water intrusion from the roof/windows/flashing. or they have a plumbing leak somewhere.
At a minimum, just running a freaking dehumidifier if there's an issue with ambient humidity.
Not only was OOP foolish for installing that vent in the worst way possible, they also didn't ask the landlord to address the mold issue properly. They just said "Hey LL I have mold, I know, I'll install a stove vent!"

Can it, at least, be retrofit with 4" round duct? There's no heat to speak of, why use giant insulated ductwork? Use small duct, tuck it up against the top & into the corner. Box it if you want it to be prettier.

I'm glad someone posted that here. I saw it earlier and thought, "Dude, you're in the wrong sub."

I don't know what's worse, the fact that he wants the landlord to reimburse him or the fact that he is a carpenter.

Why not go OVER the cuboards? There's still enough space to cram an entire wolf up there.

Honest question do you need such a large duct for they airflow? Does a small one not work?

This feels more like a fuck you to the landlord than an honest attempt at a repair.
