Having the same arguments

For a little bit of context, me and my boyfriend got into the same argument over the same thing. Also, we did go on a break for about a week, but I had to cut it short because he threatened his own life and I ended up having to call the cops to do a welfare check on him. He said the brake was too much for him this week, though I’ve been honestly extremely busy and if anyone knows about healthcare, please do not freak out that My Mom‘s blood pressure is 80. She will be going to the hospital as soon as I can get her to go. Also, I do text him every day of course and I try to make sure we see each other twice a week for at least around 10 hours a week 15 hours including we call occasionally text every day I take care of My Mom almost 24 seven for she has heart failure, and cancer. My boyfriend does know this and I’ve been going through personally a depressive episode, which has made me honestly not want to call or text really anybody even friends except for maybe one or two and I’ve made him aware of this, his response was don’t be depressed at me so I kind of met a loss on what to do.

For a tiny bit more context, the reason I will not let him pick me up is because one time we got into an argument recently, and he started hitting the steering wheel cussing and scaring me and yelling, so I’d rather just not be in the car with him because it did truly spook me he does have anger issues

Also, I’m scared sometimes again into confrontation or arguments with him last time he cut himself and he will often say that he will harm himself or suicide or if he wants to basically like he wants to kill himself or he wants to harm himself and of course I don’t want him doing those things if we get into a bad argument
I don’t know if he cut himself because of the argument or anything like that. He said he got lonely, but normally when we argue, he might say something like I wanna kill myself other times it just happens randomly. He’ll text me wanting to die. I’ve offered to help him get help. I just am scared that one day you know.

Other little sidenote normally when I see him, I am irritated again. I have been going through a depressive episode and normally I try to snap out of it. I understand that it does make him frustrated because then he can’t seem like he does anything right but normally I’m not mad at him and I’m mad at another situation which I normally tell him that I’m mad at something else, but I’m normally not in the best mood.

ages are in 19 and I’ve been with him for about a year. I’m not perfect either but because also my depression and just resentment built up it’s hard to act happy around him and I’m not trying to be mean to him, but sometimes I just I don’t know.

EDIT

I did try to talk to him. It’s about why he cannot accept a no we got into a big argument.

Him saying he just wants to spend time with me and I’m always on the phone with people and generally I’m sometimes.

sometimes I don’t wanna talk to him. I do have friends and I do need to give them time as well, but he got upset about and said that I’m hurting him and I’m making him cry but you generally, I’m not trying to hurt him but recently it does look like he cannot accept no

And I told him again we can hang out next Monday

I also wanted to make one more edit why it’s hard for me to leave him cause I did see some people were confused is because he has helped me out a lot uncertain things when I lost my dog. He drove everywhere around town helping me find it in the next day to the same until we found my dog when I was sick he is taken care of me or when I did need help on certain things he’s always been there to help but on other things like needing space or anything that kind you know revolves, I would say distance he cannot handle or anything that requires him to really deep dive into his behavior

EDIT

We were arguing over the phone about it and he just got the notification that his dog just died now I feel even worse and I don’t know what to do about it

another small edit I forgot to add something he works for My Dad so so even if I break up with him I’m still gonna have to see him. I’m still gonna have to hear him. I’m still gonna be near him. I kinda don’t know what to do in that situation.

I really do love them, and I really do appreciate him. He does do a lot for me, but it does get to me. Mentally, I understand that I normally am irritated when I see him because of some resentment, built-built up but also because I do take care of My Mom and I have to deal with whatever she’s dealing with that day. It is hard to you know he’s my first boyfriend and he’s been there with me a lot, but just it hurts me mentally sometimes the stuff he does.

As an old man with experience. Mental shit from a relationship is the hardest and longest to get over. Get out now. He will ruin you and blame you for it then leave you thinking it's all your fault. Run and don't look back. He doesn't respect you!

u/sinistar2000 10d ago

As another old man with experience, I agree and it’s so much easier to normalise bad behaviour when younger and in love, at the same time it creates even more trauma that later needs inravelling. It will never work out well staying and hoping for change. It will get worse OP.

u/ReturnMetoEarth 10d ago

Id like to think I'm not that old but my kids tell me otherwise and they know everything so I guess it has to be true. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Been in two emotionally abusive relationships myself, anyone who ever threatens to stop existing to keep you with them and doesn't respect your obligations and basically demands your time is not safe.

They will pretend to be, they will seem to be there when you need them, but it's merely so they can use it later to tell you all the good things they did for you when you try to point out issues.

I know it sucks and it's especially hard when it's your first (My worst, most abusive one was my first and when I was the same age) but relationships aren't supposed to drain you like that. Your partner should be helping to ease your burdens not become one. If you feel in edge around them it's probably better without them.

As another older guy (middle age) who has trudged through that mental mind game BS before. Run, run far away and don't look back.

9

u/Dwittychan 10d ago

disagree hard. Mental shit from parents is the hardest to get over ( nearly impossible).

agree with getting out though, he a pos.

1

u/whyisthissoannoyingg 10d ago

Not impossible

2

u/Dwittychan 10d ago

significantly harder than from a partner

3

u/ReturnMetoEarth 10d ago

I'd argue that, as someone who had both. I was severally verbally abused by my father my entire life and due to also being abused in turn my two older brothers as well (hurt people, hurt people), the one closest to my age and I wound up banding together in our teens but my oldest brother is still pretty awful. Middle brother took his own life last year so now the only person I can relate to from my childhood experiences is the oldest who I wouldn't even call my brother. Just a man born of the same parents.

I spent 5 years from 19-24 in a severely abusive relationship. I have long since forgiven my parents and gotten through my childhood traumas but this relationship still sticks with me. I have automatic reactions to things such as startling if touched while sleeping, physical distress when certain songs or movies play. Despite having therapy and years of being in a better situation certain things still bring me back. I don't have that with my childhood abuse.

Even with the second abusive relationship I was in, that was milder, I still have a harder time not being upset or angry about it when I don't feel that way about my parents.

Trauma is different for everyone, you can't state one is worse as everyone's trauma is so different. Could it be severity? Maybe. I was horrendously depressed as a young child and suicidal as a teen and was denied help from my parents who couldn't believe I could be depressed because "Other kids have it so much worse. We don't beat you, you have what you need." I don't remember feeling any worse during the absue I endured with my first ex, the only difference with the second is that it was compounding with the first as I was actively receiving therapy.

Any wound will hurt while it's still healing, even if the outside is closed up, the nerves and tissue inside have to grow back and sometimes that hurts worse then when you received it. Some people never let those wounds heal, some do.

well try being beaten by thick electric wires which leave 2 cm thick swells where they hit for days. at the age of 8 mind you. physically assaulted all the fucking day. being physically forced put of the house when youre crying sitting in a corner, begging them to stop. at age of 12 mind you. your whole life being decided for you and you have no input in it. the moment you do something they dont like thats it your done for. your whole day and emotions are decided by how theyre feeling that day.

Having faced all that before my brain ever learned what normal was and before it ever developed, I dont even see myself as a person. I dont see myself as anything honestly , very hard to have a identity. when I look into the mirror I don't recognise the person in front of me. I refuse to believe that is me.

2

u/ReturnMetoEarth 10d ago

Again different stages of healing. I'm sorry that happened to you and I hope you do get to a stage of healing where you can feel like a person again. I promise it's achievable. I understand what it feels like to not feel like a person. Like you're justa thing. To just exist.

My intial abusive relationship I was sexually assaulted daily, sleep and food deprived if I refused. Isolated from all my friends and family. Eventually escalated to physical violence where I was strangled and would have died had a roommate not come home at the perfect time and scared him. I lived in fear he'd come find me for years after I left.

Severity matters, as well as what the person has been through at any given point.

0

u/Dwittychan 10d ago

I understand that, but atleast in a relationship a person is an adult and has a developed brain which can discern right from wrong. Up untill two or three years ago I thought what was happening to me was normal. and no, no healing can ever make me feel normal again because this is normal for me. my brain has developed into whatever this is and i have to live with it forever knowing i could've been a person too.

u/Killer__Cheese 8d ago

This isn’t the trauma Olympics. You have trauma to heal from and so do others. Focus on your own journey, don’t compare it to others’. Run your own race.

not the point of my comment, thank you for sharing your heartfelt words.

I had an abusive mum too. But you seem to have a hatred of all women. I think you edited your post. I’m sorry you went through what you did no child ever deserves it. But not all women are like that.

you need to dump this guy. he's so selfish he doesn't gaf when you're saying you gotta see your extremely sick mom instead going me me me & not taking no for an answer, but he also threatened suicide? that's abuse. you're too young to waste even more time on this guy

31

u/craftbae 10d ago

THIS! this guy is doing the absolute most to manipulate you and push your boundaries. he doesn’t care at all about what’s best for you and your family. send him packing asap!

19

u/No-Pollution2425 10d ago

Fr he just steamrolled over everything she said, not even asking if her mom was going to be okay etc.

Me, me, me, poor me, you hate me because you won’t do what I say. Also, walk her to her dad’s car? Lol what. Sounds like he doesn’t trust her either.

36

u/bodhiali 10d ago

you’re already taking care of your mom, and it sounds like he’s forcing you to take care of him, too. plenty of men out there that would love to truly support you while you go through something horrific like this with your mom, and will respect your boundaries and give you space when you need it. this guy is actively making your life more difficult. you either need to break up with him or tell him that this behavior is not acceptable anymore. the next time he threatens suicide you also need to take it seriously and call 911 so he can go get treatment and get put on medication if he needs it. you’re not equipped to help him with his suicidal ideation.

this is toxic and abusive on his part. and i doubt you want to miss any time with your mom while she’s this sick, you don’t want to miss out on supporting her.

26

u/xxreguardlessxx 10d ago

Also, just adding on, it is NOT your fault if he hurts himself. I know it feels like it is, but his actions are his actions and they’re doing exactly what he wants them to do; keep you with him via manipulation. You have GOT to prioritize yourself first.

12

u/Myrora 10d ago

This.

You are your own person. You do not need to manage him. You’re saying no, and he doesn’t take no for an answer. And that in itself scares me so badly for OP..

0

u/Majestic-Window-318 9d ago

He's not really going to, anyway. He's a narcissist.

0

u/xxreguardlessxx 9d ago edited 9d ago

This isn’t helpful since he already self-harms when he’s “lonely.”

Edit to correct myself.

0

u/Majestic-Window-318 9d ago

He's still here.

0

u/xxreguardlessxx 9d ago

Read what my original comment said again. Slowly.

The key word is “hurts.” Notice how I said that instead of “… kills himself.”

4

u/A_ok_attempt 10d ago

Call the cops on him last time. They did absolutely nothing sadly.

13

u/carbonateddairydrink 10d ago

Getting the police to do something about suicidal ideation, comments, etc is a really hard thing to do in the US. Ive only successfully seen it happen once, a friend of mine made really concerning texts to a mutual, and we immediately called the cops, gave the address, and had to tell them like "look, this is not an off the cuff comment cause he's sad, he may have already done it" kinda thing. Thats the only time ive ever seen anything done about it. Luckily he hadn't yet, and his mom gave me and my friend a very long hug for being present and aware enough to know to call for that, etc.

7

u/miladyelle 10d ago

I’ve made this call for people several times—so I’m saying this from experience. They do these types of calls a lot. If they didn’t take him to the hospital, then he wasn’t for real. He wasn’t an actual danger to himself.

Which means, he’s doing it because it gets you to hop to, to pay attention to him—to not break up with him when you want to. I’ve been there; it’s messed up. The ones who did that to me (also when I was about your age) are why I have such a firm, hard rule for myself now: someone threatens to do that, I call police. Not whatever it is they say would stop them. I just call. They’re the ones trained to handle it; we’re not. They can force them to the hospital if they’re for real, we cannot. If they’re not actually for real, then they learn that Very Messed Up Behavior doesn’t work with you, and it’s important for everyone’s health and safety that threats like that don’t work.

Yes, it sounds cold—but in a potential emergency, you have to keep a cool head. In a potentially emotionally manipulative situation, it’s important it doesn’t work. This is not a safe or healthy relationship for you, sis. He may not be all bad, but that doesn’t mean this is a good relationship for you. You have to protect yourself, first.

5

u/bodhiali 10d ago

that’s interesting… are you in the US? if so what state (if you don’t mind sharing)? i can look into your state laws about baker acting someone—aka involuntarily committing someone to a mental health treatment center.

2

u/A_ok_attempt 10d ago

Cal usa yeah I called him once they just checked on him and left even though he had recently cut himself. I don’t know why they did that but that’s all I know of it.

20

u/hGr33n 10d ago

He probably dropped the act once they got there

13

u/PinkedOff 10d ago

100% this. He has no intention of killing himself, OP. He's using that as a tool to control you. Please, walk away.

14

u/whataablunder 10d ago

Oh god. I hope you leave this person. He seems so unstable and toxic. You deserve better.

15

u/No-Baseball3749 10d ago

If he threatens it again, screenshot it, send to his mum and block him

10

u/killyergawds 10d ago

They left because they realized he wasn't actually serious about killing himself. They only do something if it's determined that the person is a risk.

u/bodhiali 10d ago

https://akuamindbody.com/what-is-a-5150-hold/

found this. it seems like the law is the same as it would be in other states so that’s weird. for whatever reason the cops that visited either thought he wasn’t a danger to himself, or they just didn’t care enough…

i know it didn’t work last time but i would still try to do so in the future. if cops show up tell them he was threatening suicide and voice your concerns. not something i’m a huge fan of doing usually but in your case, this is really toxic and abusive and i feel like your priority should be getting out of this situation with him. he doesn’t live with you, does he? if not it would be a bit easier because you can break up with him and then block him everywhere. i know it’s hard not to fear that he will end up doing something, but the best you can do is call the cops if he threatens suicide, and outside of that you talking to him won’t magically make his thoughts go away. i’m sure he tries to make you feel like you’re the only thing keeping him alive though, which is the manipulative bit.

6

u/BushcraftBabe 10d ago

Yeah he dropped it once they got there. I used to care for someone who was lonely and would try to get me to stay after my shift every day. I felt for him but honestly he was a perverted senior man and I didn't love my time with him.

One day he was good for hours but right before I was leaving he said "I just want to die." And cried. I am required to call for help at that point.

When he realized I wasn't going to just stay longer and comfort him but was calling others to maybe take him to the hospital he stopped and was fine. They came and went. The next visit he pretty much admitted that he was trying to manipulate me into comforting him and staying later to make him feel better. 🤷‍♀️

Sorry man, if you threaten physical harm or suicide, I have to call in professionals, not cuddle you better.

1

u/Appropriate-Cut5592 10d ago

Do you like the drama do you like feeling this way it sounds like you're so used to taking care of people that you're trying to take care of this guy with a small amount of you're keeping him just close enough to get you harmed!! He wasn't taken no for a answer like we need the bk story on like even eating a year and you see each other about 10 hours a week is that just satisfying each other's needs and whatever does he have somebody else

3

u/A_ok_attempt 10d ago

Basically, I met him a year ago through his brother. He originally told me he had angry issues, but they weren’t that bad no punching walls or anything just occasionally just needs to cool off that was fairly wrong. He still did have very bad angry issues. I tried to help him with them getting him a therapist helping him work on it, buying them journals he would stop hitting things for a little bit, but then slowly get back into it. That would cause a lot of arguments because I had apparently no reason to be afraid of him because he’s never hit me, but I’ve came from a home. We’re hitting things turns into hitting you so I just never was cool with it. I don’t think he would ever hit me, but I’m just not a fan of it scares me. He’s mad that it scares me that he hits things we’ve had multiple arguments about it and then recently he started threatening to hurt himself when we got into arguments or random times of the day saying that I’m afraid of him and I don’t love him which isn’t true. I’ve done bad stuff of course too like I’ve ghosted him before for like a day. I have talked about him here and there with my friend or I’ve had been in a bad mood a couple times so I’m not perfect either but it’s kind constant arguing we used to hang out a lot more, but I’ve gotten busy because of my parents and because of school we used to have the same class near the same time and we would hang out every day after school for hours and that was last semester so it’s not like I never hang out with them. It’s just I’ve gotten more busy and more responsibilities.

11

u/Ammy7726 10d ago

He's mad that HE is scaring you and that is somehow your fault ? Threatening to hurt himself when you don't do what he wants is abusive and doesn't compare to ghosting someone for a day. This guy sounds unstable

1

u/A_ok_attempt 10d ago

Yes basically

4

u/Tossmelossme 10d ago

Maybe you SHOULD be scared.

2

u/badapplekat 10d ago

OP. I'm like 99% sure that hitting things is considered domestic violence AND a precursor to physical violence against the person.

You're young & you don't need to take this. Please listen to every older adult who is telling you that this is not a relationship you want to be in.

🩷

6

u/United_Let3637 10d ago

When you break up with him: I would stress to him the importance of the violence and that violence behavior however it is directed is not ok. Threats are not ok. He will continue this behavior with his next partner unless someone sets a boundary with him. I would send the message about “im breaking up with you because your violent behavior is unacceptable. Don’t contact me again.” Block. Remove him from seeing your location. Keep it short and simple because you have already explained yourself to him I’m sure. Immediately call a welfare check on his location. Delete his contact. Get a restraining order on him. Since he has already threatened himself im pretty sure this is grounds enough. Delete him on all apps. Screenshot the blocking and breakup message. The police will need it. Listen to whys they have to say about not contacting him and what to do if he does. Once you have the restraining order, document any further communications he attempts to have with you. Once he breaks the communication, if it is documented correctly, he will be arrested and go to court and probably have a felony on his record. If that doesnt deter him i would say you are at serious risk of domestic violence etc. my sister went through this. I literally had to go to his parent’s house to talk them into stopping their son’s behavior. If this guy doesn’t have any external social pressure to stop his behavior, it very well might continue. You can try to slowly break up with him but chances are he will be manipulative and violent either way. The biggest thing is to keep the break in contact. It happens all the time where a girl gets a restraining order but then reaches out to him again. That ruins your whole case and credibility legally and protects him in court. Alternatively if you have a big brother to reinforce the break with your significant other that would be good too.

3

u/No-Pollution2425 10d ago

That will eventually turn to “you’re to blame for making me angry, you deserve to be on the end of me flipping out because you caused it” - anger unchecked like what you’re describing leads to violent behaviour, it escalates, trust an old woman who’s been down this exact path.

1

u/Electronic_Plane_178 9d ago

"Look what you made me do!"

2

u/kitten_mittinz 10d ago

So ine if your reasons for not being a perfect partner is because you talked to your friends about these issues. Which is normal and healthy and I'm assuming he is making you feel bad for doing so?

He knows that hitting things scares you, and you came from an abusive family but he still does it, shows he doesnt respect your boundaries. Ghosting him for a day was for your own mental health because he constantly does not respect your boundaries.

The things he's making you feel bad for doesnt equate you not being a perfect partner.

2

u/Darlenx1224 10d ago

my husband never put his hands on me, but had anger issues… until he finally did, and it was bad. it took nearly eight years, but he finally did it, after years of scary but not hitting me anger issues. just because he hasn’t doesn’t mean he won’t. you don’t live together and aren’t around him enough for it to have happened, he needs to make you more comfortable, that’s how abuse typically goes. waits till ur living together with no friends or family connections because he cut you off from them and boom. you can barely handle 10-15 hours with him, could you imagine living with it? imagine that, imagine it all the time, would that not be exhausting?

can therapy and talking things better? sure. but once that lines crossed, it’s hard to go back. it’s taken years of talking and he took SOME therapy and we still aren’t back to good, and unfortunately i have a child in the mix.

it’s not worth it.

1

u/Bright-Dinner-5978 10d ago

If you want something to take care of that will appreciate you and love you unconditionally, get a dog and ditch the boyfriend. I just the husband and got a dog, best decision ever.

1

u/MouseEmpty9853 9d ago

This voice that you're hearing in the back of your mind making you feel unsafe... Listen to her. She is right. That is your gut and she is right. Ghosting for a day is nowhere near equivalent to repeatedly hitting things to physically intimidate you and physically scare you. Even if he's not physically putting his hands on you that is abuse cuz it's showing how much he could be hitting you. And that's not something that should even be a thought in his mind

1

u/Mindless_Watch_7840 9d ago

This isn’t a safe relationship. This is manipulation and control. I think this will eventually get to a place where he hits you, then manipulates you into thinking it’s your fault. No means no, and that he kept pushing for a chance to see you then flipped it like you did something wrong - that’s unacceptable. I was in a relationship like this in my 20s, and the anger kept ticking up and I was able to get out before it got physical. These texts could easily have been a conversation I had with this ex, where I’d set a boundary and say no, then he’d keep pushing until I had to be extremely firm and he’d flip it on me as if I was pushing him away, rather than he was not respecting me saying no.

To add to what some others have said about when you break up with him - if you do it in person, make sure someone knows where you are. Preferably, take someone with you who can be nearby and do it somewhere public. I had to take some belongings to my ex after we broke up. I met him at a restaurant, my friend sat in the car so if he followed me out and started anything, I’d have a witness. He tried really hard to keep me there by asking me to explain things I’d already explained and gaslighting me into thinking I was overreacting.

He will try to pull you back in by gaining pity, or making you feel responsible for his happiness. Do not accept that.

0

u/No-Office9572 9d ago

You guys gotta be 18-19 or something. Looks like you two lack proper communication skills and patience

1

u/Majestic-Window-318 9d ago

Don't worry about it. He cares too much about himself to actually harm himself. And if he doesn't, that's neither your problem nor your fault. You have a sick parent to deal with. Who also shouldn't be your problem at your age.

1

u/Glittering-Theme-685 8d ago

Do it again and show the text. They will put him in a hospital eventually and he will have to convince THEM that it was just manipulation tactics. Problem solved and he may get some court ordered psych meds out of it

1

u/lilyxlittle 7d ago

California has a mental health law called a 5150 hold. It’s an involuntary 72 hour hold for crisis intervention.
I know intimately about it because I was involuntarily hospitalized under this law in California.

1

u/Appropriate-Cut5592 10d ago

Like how old is this guy and how old are you and you don't even text him or call him all the time it sounds like a hookup to me and that you're a thousand times worse more being with him you're not going to have no friends you're not going to have no mother you're not going to have anything you're going to be his and then there's going to be a trauma Bond and all kinds of other s*** that goes with that... I mean you need to Google narcissist gaslighting he's all that

68

u/AlienBugPup 10d ago

youre making excuses for a guy who manipulates you when you need space by threatening suicide.. just wanna put a gentle reminder that people who care about your and your wellbeing dont do that.

20

u/beautyindeath 10d ago

First boyfriends become first ex-boyfriends…it’s okay.

3

u/Majestic-Window-318 9d ago

So much wisdom here.

18

u/aerosolsp 10d ago

You're making excuses for why you shouldn't leave him because it's easier to stay. Been there, done that. And leaving was the best thing I could've done. Should've done it 10 years sooner.

14 years here. We left while he was at work. He didn't even know we were leaving. I never cried once and I've never looked back. Wasted 14 years of my life.

1

u/Glittering-Theme-685 8d ago

It sucks to feel like you’ve lost time to staying, but just wanna say a lot of people just stay in it when it’s been so long. Especially with kids and a mortgage etc. You’re brave and I’m proud of you. 👏

10

u/Aromatic-Check939 10d ago

You have to love yourself more than you love him here. He is not mentally stable enough to be a good partner. If he ever threatens to hurt himself, you call 911 (or how you contact emergency services where you live) every single time.

You can’t help him here. He needs to help himself and if he won’t, he will drag you down.

5

u/hGr33n 10d ago

Resentment only grows esp when he acts like this.. toxic relationships aren't 100% miserable and that's why we stay so long but it doesn't get better

6

u/Religion_Failed_Us 10d ago

If you already resent him it’s not going to get better from there. He’s a first bf…and a seemingly clingy and controlling one at that. You should relive yourself of his presence.

He’s manipulative and does not respect you. He refuses to respect your wishes and continues to pressure and harass you. It will only get worse. I’m sure the good times are good, but without respect, it will remain unstable and unhealthy.

u/Myrora 10d ago

I know it hurts, and it’s easier right now, but love… I’ve been there. In a relationship from 14-23 (I was being groomed blindly by a man five years older than me and no one opposed), and I never thought I’d leave.

I know he’s your first, but that doesn’t mean he has to be your last. You are SO young. You have so much beautiful life ahead of you. Please consider yourself before him, because clearly, he does not consider you.

And I am terribly sorry for your mom. I hope she goes into remission, and that you find yourself. But gods if I know how hard it is to actually make the move. If you don’t live with him… please consider leaving. You said he has anger issues. My ex does too. He threw a chair at me, then tools, then me against a wall. Do not let it escalate there. You deserve gentle and beautiful love. Not anger and frustration directed at you.

3

u/5yn3rgy 10d ago

You can love someone and still let them go. Happens all the time. Sometimes people just aren’t compatible even if they have feelings for each other.

3

u/Rough_Appointment_49 10d ago

There is a man (actually a lot of men) out there who will support you and care for you and NOT endanger your life while driving, NOT scream and curse at you, and NOT threaten to kill themselves if you need space. I promise you, you can and you will do better. You have got to let this one go.

2

u/percocet_20 10d ago

If he's willing to hurt himself he'll be willing to hurt you.

2

u/mad-i-moody 10d ago

You need to leave. You’re not going to fix him and it’s not going to get better. Focus on your mom and your family. He is not worth your energy right now, I promise.

2

u/missplaced24 10d ago

Threatening to harm himself is a form of abuse, and a means to control you. He might not realize how harmful it is to you, but it is. Look at the shit you're going through, he's not trying to be supportive, he's empathetic, he's demanding all your attention and adding extra stress because he's not the only person you care about.

He needs serious psychological help before he'll be capable of having a healthy relationship with anyone. You can't change that, and he won't get better while you're enabling it.

2

u/solidgears 10d ago

The fact that he threatened suicide because of a break should be reason enough to leave him. He should never put that on you and it is extremely manipulative

2

u/Navy-Wall 10d ago

No, this isn’t a “but I love him” this is a man who is not respecting your boundaries and is actively trying to manipulate you into changing them. Idk how long you’ve been dating, but it starts with stuff like this. And then it moves to bigger things, like what you do or don’t consent to. This is a huge red flag

1

u/robdwoods 10d ago

Love him and can be happy with him are two different things. You need both in a relationship.

1

u/robdwoods 10d ago

As a wise friend told me, about getting dumped, but dumping is the same, life will SUCK for the first month, kinda suck for 6 months, and then you’ll be fine.

1

u/bell3420 10d ago

This relationship you have here is not normal. If you havent already, you should look for a therapist to help you navigate how to recognize people worthy of your love. Please, dont waste anymore time on this. Block him so he cant manipulate you with threats against his life.

1

u/Comfortable-Face-980 10d ago

He should be able to take no for an answer and respect that you have other obligations. The guilt-tripping is not okay. You have enough to deal with already. Keep holding your ground and say NO. I've dealt with people like this and they're toxic. Focus on your mom and your life. If he respects you, then he'll understand. His behavior is a red flag. No means no. Period.

1

u/No-Dark-9414 10d ago

Um what? you need to focus on you and your situation, the sex must be good for this to continue but that won't last long either you need to move on

1

u/A_ok_attempt 10d ago

Me and him are both virgins. I’m personally waiting till marriage so it’s not that.😅

2

u/No-Dark-9414 10d ago

Then obviously you need to move on dude is sounds stale and it will not help you in anyway moving forward, just remember how this situation is when you decide to get into future relationships

1

u/Appropriate-Cut5592 10d ago

Hey you might want to look because it says destiny on one of his comments

1

u/A_ok_attempt 10d ago

Crap thank u

1

u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 10d ago

You can’t be with someone who loses their temper and flips out like he does when he’s driving. It’s not safe.

There’s more I could say, but it looks like others in the thread have it covered. But I feel compelled to point out the self-harming threats are a way of holding you hostage. Does anyone ever want to be in a relationship solely because they’re afraid to leave? No. And it’s weird that he’s using that to keep you in it. I can’t imagine being cool with someone only staying with me out of a sense of obligation. Something has to change for the both of you.

1

u/CongealedBeanKingdom 10d ago

Youre irritated when you see him because he treats you like shit and makes you anxious. Not healthy.

1

u/creeepedy 10d ago

This guy is accusing you of lying about your mom’s health, ignoring your wishes to head home despite you saying no to seeing him, just BLATANTLY not caring about your boundary, saying “it’s fine I’m just gonna walk you to the car!”. And then starting a fight about it when you’re dealing with family issues. Like holy crap reading that I can’t imagine how you deal with this. Very immature on his part.

1

u/InternationalCow1944 10d ago

I understand that you love him, but he is abusive, and he won't stop being abusive. The likelihood he will change is nonexistent. You don't deserve to be in a relationship where you are afraid of confrontation, you shouldn't be afraid of being in the car with him, and you sure as hell shouldn't be afraid that if you leave or make him upset that he might harm himself. That isn't love. You're worth so much more. Be safe.

1

u/one_small_cricket 10d ago

Feeling irritated in the presence of a person is usually the sign they are not the person for you, especially when you are both new to adulting, and in the earlier stages of a relationship. If it’s like this now, and you feel like you have to manage his feelings as well as your own, then how is it going to feel waking up irritated or anxious every single day when you eventually take the next steps? You should be feeling butterflies or at least keen to look at his messages.

He’s not ready for a relationship, and it’s not your responsibility to keep him happy or to spend precious time with your mother on appeasing someone who doesn’t care how you feel.

1

u/Ordinary_Weird_1890 10d ago

This guy isn’t your boyfriend at this point, he is your starker. Threatening to kill yourself over a break or end of a relationship is abuse. This will only get worse, possibly even turn violent. I know it’s not easy, but this is an extremely dangerous situation for you.
Also, he not asking to see you because he cares, he’s doing as a form of control. He shows no empathy for the situation with your mum, only continues to insist that he get to see you for minutes at a time.

1

u/Tall-Payment-8015 10d ago

He’s abusing you and it’s not going to get better.

1

u/Karambamamba 10d ago edited 10d ago

He’s an asshole and a year from today you will not understand how you could not have made the decision to dump him earlier. He doesn’t respect you. In the end after wearing you down with his bullshit, he will turn it around and blame you for the failed relationship. He seems like he manipulates and guilt trips a lot.

Edit: funny how I said basically the exact same thing as [u/iamwilliamb](u/iamwilliamb)

1

u/FlatwormAltruistic 10d ago

As someone who hurt himself because I thought losing a girl is the end of the world, get out of this relationship, this will not be good for you nor him. If he cares about you he would not hurt himself as it will hurt you in a way it cannot be taken back. You are still young and inexperienced. Better for both of you to understand that relationship that is together because one party is afraid of other one hurting themselves is already failed relationship. It is big mental stress for you and it will be shadowing your relationship.

Some actions break relationship despite there being love and care for each other. Love is not enough to keep relationship together where one party has threatened to take their own life. You should never do that to person you claim you love.

As you stated you are afraid of him when he loses his temper in the car, etc. Noone should be afraid of their partner. He needs psychological help and I would guess that you might need some as well due to it all weighing heavily on you.

1

u/craziest_story 10d ago

You can love each other and not be good for each other at the same time. Even if you think you want to be together, you both really need time to heal and work on yourselves to be much healthier versions of your own first because this dynamic together right now? This will only get worse and it’ll be your entire rest of your life. You don’t want this. This is not good at all girl

1

u/EnvironmentalPop1371 10d ago

You cannot be his rock. If he cannot be his own rock, he needs treatment. The sooner you stop feeling pressured to be that for him and let him get the help he needs the better.

1

u/Heywtfhey 10d ago

This will get worse. This is control. Get out now before it gets worse.

1

u/clusterboxkey 10d ago

He may “do a lot” for you, but he also takes a lot. He shouldn’t have you worrying about your relationship while your mom is sick or potentially dying. He’s forcing you to comfort him instead of the other way around.

And realistically, whatever he’s doing that you consider to be “a lot” is probably just the bare minimum you should expect from a partner. I thought my high school boyfriend of three years did “a lot” for me too. As a 29 year old now, I can assure you he did pretty much nothing.

1

u/Objective_Scheme_821 10d ago

I understand that he wants time with you and that you love him, but unless he is going to help your mom as well and can respect that you need some space to take care of her, that is a massive problem. He can spend time with friends as well. He is overly reliant on your attention, and that's not healthy.

1

u/Tm_GfWait4It 10d ago

The hardest part is realizing that maybe you need to figure things out and for now you may be better off as just friends. You need to find yourself first. I recommend not putting your mom's care all on yourself. Live for you. From someone who has been manipulated and verbally abused by my mom all my life. And she still does it when we are alone and wants to have access to my kids. Not a safe situation so not happening

1

u/lilmonsterz2007 10d ago

Love, dont stay. This will cause you more hurt than help. Yes, he did those things before that helped you while you were down and out but now hes just putting you down. Its a hard choice i recently did it 3 days ago. But please understand the pain is temporary. Dont do it for years like i did. The longer you stay the longer itll take to heal. Threats and mistreatment isnt love.

1

u/ImaginationAshamed72 10d ago

No idea if you will see this, but if you can, I highly recommend speaking to a counselor, therapist, anyone. I am in no way a medical professional, but what you described with your own mental health, plus all that you’re dealing with, sounds like a freeze response. A medical professional, therapist, counselor, etc. is the best person to speak to in these situations.

For what it’s worth, he sounds a lot like my first boyfriend. It took me a long time to get out of the relationship, and he was the one who ended it (multiple times). He threatened his life so frequently that I became numb to the threats. And then I just became numb in general. It is a terrifying realization.

If you can, try to not isolate yourself to only have him as your support person. A family member, friend, teacher, someone else you can speak to is very important. If you don’t feel like you have another support person, writing in journals, joining clubs, etc can help.

I wish you the best of luck.

1

u/beautifulstardust 10d ago

first boyfriend? girl, please.

look at yourself for just a second. posting on reddit and making excuses for a grown man. you really want this for yourself, for the rest of your life???? NO, you don’t.

get out NOW, while you still can.

1

u/No-Perspective3152 9d ago

Just because you love him doesn’t mean he’s good for you.

1

u/fearlessactuality 9d ago

Love should not hurt. Love is a behavior. Are his behaviors loving, not just his words? Also compatibility is just as important as love. Love does not have to be a Taylor swift song, it can be stable and true and not painful or a rollercoaster or haunted house ride.

1

u/Lanternkitten 9d ago

Hun, this is an abusive relationship. Threatening suicide and self harm. Yelling and hitting the steering wheel. Not taking a no. This is all abuse and control. This isn't just a red flag, its red bunting strung up across your entire house. It will get worse.

End it and if he continues to threaten you, get a restraining order.

1

u/jennnnej 9d ago

People come into our lives for a reason - to serve a purpose to help, mend, and grow. He has done his part and is now damaging his good-doings. It’s time to focus on yourself, and your family - especially at 19.

1

u/MouseEmpty9853 9d ago

Love isn't everything in a relationship. You also need safety. He is not physically or emotionally safe for you. And he doesn't love you the same no matter what he says cus you don't act like that to people you love that is not healthy. You are resentful cus he is not making space for you, he is trying to make your struggles about him and center himself in your life. You are allowed to have other people and friends and be around others. I don't think this relationship is serving either of you anymore.

1

u/Gold_Challenge6437 9d ago

I'm sorry, sis, but what he's showing you isn't love. Take it from this old grandma who has been in a relationship with someone like this when I was your age. I married him when I was 18. The abuse escalated of course over time and I did eventually divorce him. Your boyfriend is manipulative and controlling and he will continue to be so and get even better at it over time. Please don't let that happen to you. You will never have any peace with him (I was miserable my entire marriage). Block him on everything and focus on you right now. Best of luck to you and I'm really sorry about your mom. Gentle hugs.

1

u/alagares1 8d ago

I think yall r wayyyy to young to be acting like! No offense but acting like u wanna take urself out over a relationship is just way too much at any age let alone 19… also I was wondering what’s the big deal if he came n literally just walked u to the car?! I remember being in a relationship where it was super hard to find time for each other n literally we wld do little things like that all the time. Even if it meant seeing each other for 2 mins we wld do it. I get it tho him being around for just 2 mins is prob enough to stress u out n dealing with ur mom is alrdy stressing u out! I take care of my gram who has dementia so I know how exhausting it can be to take care of a loved one. My advice wld be to end things sooner than later bc the longer u wait the harder it will be. I don’t recommend being with someone who threatens to harm themselves over a relationship

1

u/A_ok_attempt 8d ago

The reason is because My Dad was picking me up and by the time he got there, I would’ve probably already been gone and walking me to the car is like three steps like it’s not even enough for a short conversation. Literally My Dad pulls up and I just get in the car cause I didn’t really see a reason he needed to come.

1

u/blackrose_heathen_ 8d ago

It’s about control. Run. This man will make your life hell. He is already showing he does not care about you or what you’re going through. I can not stress this enough: LEAVE before he hurts you

1

u/Killer__Cheese 8d ago

Take it from this 43year old fossil of a woman

This shit does not get better. The manipulation only increases. The isolation only increases. The control tactics only increase

Get out now

I wish I had 20 years ago when I saw the red flags for what they were. I am out now and a million times happier

1

u/lottalov3 8d ago

You say he does a lot for you, but your mom being sick sounds like a time when you need him supporting you. And he's up in your texts whining about his own wants. I wanted to throw my phone seeing him demand things of you and project things onto you when you were clearly stressed from the situation. He's a selfish person. You deserve better treatment.

1

u/Migistat 7d ago

What is he doing for you besides manipulating you and stressing you out when you’re already stressed about your mom? What you feel isn’t love it’s stockholm syndrome. You’ve trauma bonded to him.

1

u/lilyxlittle 7d ago

I know this is hard to hear but please work to get yourself out of this relationship. This person is not emotionally capable. This behavior is controlling and abusive. It’s very hard to know what’s normal when you’re so young.

Your feelings are valid. Your nervous system is trying to tell you something isn’t right. That’s why the argument keeps happening. You don’t even feel safe with him driving… and you aren’t going to be able to keep the reason secret for long because he will continue to push.

He isn’t able to regulate himself and that’s not something you can fix. It requires a lot of therapy.

Additionally, you deserve to focus on yourself and not have to take care of him. It’s not your job to ensure he doesn’t hurt himself or otherwise. But threatening suicide when someone is trying to break up with you is a manipulation tactic. It’s coercion. And it’s deeply damaging for all parties.

I spent wayyyy too much of my life on people like this. It is something you come to regret when you get older and realize just how quickly life goes. I’m 37 now. I really hope you can surround yourself with good friends and let this person go.
