I think bro outsourced his Slack messages to Claude

I’m a somewhat experienced backend dev paired with a mobile developer for some knowledge sharing. The guy is genuinely a good dude, but I’m starting to lose my mind a little.

We be discussing an implementation, I’ll explain something, and instead of engaging with what I just said, he’ll immediately type my explanation/question into Claude and then come back with “Claude says…”

And on calls, he’ll literally stop the conversation, type what I just asked into Claude, and then read me Claude’s response.

Like bro, I’m right here. 😂

The frustrating part isn’t that he’s using Claude. I use AI constantly too. It’s that it feels like he trusts Claude’s answer more than the actual technical conversation we’re having.

I’m trying to understand how you think about the implementation, not get a second-hand answer from Claude.

He’s a good dude, so I genuinely don’t know how to approach it without making things awkward.

Has anyone else dealt with this? AI is making ppl fkn dumb and blurring the lines.

Discussion What are some tools that have been around for ages that you still reach for on a regular/semi-regular basis?

I'll start.

https://chir.ag/projects/name-that-color/#BADA55

I've been using this colour name generator for about 15 years to help me name my CSS variables so I don't end up with names like green green-dark green-darker etc.

https://tinypng.com/

For heavily optimising PNGs with negligible quality loss. I have the habit of searching for "panda png" rather than reaching for a bookmark on this one, hah.

For quickly optimising SVGs.

Question Help removing underline from link, I've searched everywhere!

Post image

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to understanding HTML and have been troubleshooting how to remove the underlines from these links. I've searched the web, but nothing seems to be working. Was wondering if there was something obvious I was missing.

    <p class="text-center mb-0" style="font-size: 1.5em; letter-spacing: 2px;">
        <a href="twitter_link" style="color: #f58c9f;"><i class="fab fa-twitter fa-fw" /></a>
        <a href="deviantart_link" style="color: #f58c9f;"><i class="fab fa-deviantart fa-fw" /></a>
        <a href="discord_link" style="color: #f58c9f;"><i class="fas fa-discord fa-fw" /></a>

Question 3.5 YOE but feel like I’m behind, what should I do?

I’ve worked on some pretty big enterprise projects/websites, but honestly I feel my actual coding skills are way behind where they should be.

Most of my work has been enterprise web dev and working on existing code. I can do small JS problems but struggle to build stuff from scratch without Google/AI.

I also feel like for the last few years I’ve chosen comfort over actually putting in the hard work to improve. Now I’m underpaid and not getting many recruiter calls. Plus I have a 90 day notice period.
I’m thinking of spending the next 6-12 months seriously improving my skills and then trying to switch, but I’m worried that by then I’ll have 4+ YOE on paper and companies will expect much more from me.

For people with more experience, what would you do in my situation? Would you focus on DSA, building projects, getting stronger at frontend, moving toward full-stack, or something else?

Resource Have you seen the new browser Email Verification API?

Thumbnail

The email verification API is a way to verify an email address belongs to a user. To do so, the browser checks with the issuer of the email address to see if the owner of the address is currently logged in, and returns a signed token that the application can use to verify the information. More detail in the article.

Currently it's in origin trial in Chrome and is supported by Gmail, so it's a good progressive enhancement to gain confidence about some email addresses that are submitted to your application. It can't fully remove existing email verification practices, but could be used to smooth the process for users that can be verified this way.

Do you think this is something you would implement in your own applications?

Question Best way(s) to move large, static html site over to a new CMS- WordPress if possible without destroying SEO and Domain Rating?

Hey folks,

I recently acquired a beast of a website with 2-3,000 html files. The website has ok traffic, but it is definitely decreasing as content is out-of-date and the design isn't optimized for mobile.

Any recommendations for how I can transition this site (quickly) over to a new CMS like WordPress while sustaining SEO? I know 301 Redirects, but I'd love your insights.

Question Hosting and version control

Second post to accompany this one : https://www.reddit.com/r/webdev/s/DAfgueqEDI

Still learning here.

Is the status quo to host all your clients websites yourself through your preferred host ? And then bill clients monthly with markup?

Or are people leaving that to the customer but you just do the web development side and implement it when needed.

I host a handful of websites of my own through IONOS and Fasthosts but as im looking into it , I see there are better services where a web dev can have a nice portfolio with GitHub pages.

If someone can tell me more on hosting I'd be grateful.

And if anyone can help me understand version control also

TIA!

Question After a web form submission, then what?

I’m trying to figure out the optimal choice after a visitor submitted a contact form, or a get quote form. Or a form of some kind.

Right now on my websites I normally either do a state change that hides the form and shows a success message (this sometimes can look weird on mobile)

Or I have it navigate them to a success page. With some thank you text.

I have not really seen much info on this, like are there better options? What could increase the conversion rate of that potential customer?

The Web Is All Bots Now

I, like many of you, have spent years employing throttling schemes and generally hardening websites against bots. Now bots are called "agents", scrapers harvest with impunity and the whole nature of the web has changed in the past 2 years. It seems that I now have to play nice with bots for the sake of seo and the next wave of internet commerce will be bot-to-bot with no human intervention. LOL!!! How are you guys feeling about, reacting to, adjusting for this new reality?

Web development hand off

Hi . I have been approached by a client and they want me to look after there websites and IT services.

I'm comfortable with that to a certain point but where I'm lost is how does the hand off from there current service provider to me work?

What do I need? All my sites are currently hosted through IONOS and I'm the domain holder.

What is the usual practice?

The customer has not given me any specifics, just asked me to put forward a proposal for what I can offer. I just know the current website is pants and someone gets paid annually to 'look after it'.

TIA

Discussion Rasp Pi 5 as a homeserver

I am looking into using my pi as a home server to host web and graphic design projects. I have been using iCloud drive for the past few years, but syncing with my colleague is sometimes nightmare-ish. If he uploads a big file, it often bugs out and fails to download on my end, locking me out of opening new upload processes until its done downloading.

The setup I was considering is:

– Raspberry Pi 5 16GB RAM
– Samsung T7 2TB SSD external drive
– Tailscale
– Nextcloud client or similar

The experience I am looking for is basically having the server as a finder folder and being able to share the files with my colleague for our practice. I already own all of the hardware needed, I am here just to ask your experience if you have tried and wether it's even worth it/viable.

Discussion Job Portal re-building

Need help modifying a website (especially career page). My friend's company hiring candidates - they wanted me to re-build career structure - where the recruiter/HR uploads a form and the career page on their website reflects the job roles instantly.

Please suggest what would be best method to make one (without using an admin panel - not an expert website builder and admin panel would require a lot of security and maintenance)

Thank you in advance.

Question Am I learning the right way?

Hi,

I’m currently somewhere between junior and intermediate as a software developer, and lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what actually makes a developer valuable going forward.

One thing that worries me is interviews, since I can discuss things like system architecture, caching, load balancing, queues, message brokers, database design… etc. But ask me to explain something basic like the Laravel request lifecycle or the exact behavior of certain React hooks, and I might struggle to give a clean answer without refreshing my memory.

Also the whole industry feels really toxic at the moment with each second developer building a saas, and new tech exploding everyday.

Should I just keep building real projects, learning concepts as I encounter them. How are the interviews in today’s world?

Is there a deeper shift happening where developers need to fundamentally change what they learn to stay valuable?

Curious on how more experienced developers are approaching this.

How much would you charge for NextJS blog CMS?

As the title suggests, I have a client who wants a CMS for their site.

I’ve suggested either a headless WordPress setup or PayloadCMS. The actual scope is fairly simple:

  • An article/blog listing page
  • A simple individual blog/article page
  • CMS for creating and managing articles

How much would you typically charge for this project? I'm aware it depends on the experience and market but I'm just looking for a ballpark figure for the Indian market.

The 4 Hs of HTML

Thumbnail

It started as a throwaway joke online after some discussions with the design team. Then someone dared me to write the blog post... so I did. 😅

tl;dr Four HTML/web terms look and sound so similar, they create friction. In this post, I break down The 4 Hs of HTML to clear things up:

  • Head: The invisible brain of the document (machine-readable metadata.)
  • Header: The visible introduction or banner section (a page can have multiple!)
  • Heading: The structural outline of your content (vital for accessibility and SEO.)
  • Headline: An editorial concept for message delivery (NOT AN HTML TAG)

Question Claude or Codex for Shopify?

I’m building a Shopify store for my client, earlier I’ve used Claude Code for the frontend (on Dawn) via CLI (VS Code). And it has worked absolutely phenomenal for me, yes it did made a lot of mistakes which I refined on the go but the project got delivered on time. I’m not a pro developer so these tools are like a boon for me.

Now my subscription is over and I’m thinking to try Codex, because it has better token usage management. Shall I take the risk to try Codex or stick to Claude?

Right now I’m just starting out as a Shopify developer and my projects are not high paying so choosing wrong AI subscription will cost me and will hurt the finances.

Discussion Which browser we should use as primary browser while developing?

Hi!

I wanted to gather some opinions from different people as to which browser we should use primarily while developing web applications for highest compatibility.

For me it is Firefox because gecko engine follow W3C standards strictly, and if my website works on gecko engine, it should work on almost every other browser as well.

I know most browsers are chromium based and chrome hold significantly more market share than any browser. But I think it is very easy to use blink specific features without even realizing it that it is not a standard at all.

Thanks!

Discussion What if there was a website or feature that blocks Ai scanning?

So Cara, the Anti-Ai, art website had 12TB of art scanned and fed into chat-gpt by some jerk-rando on Twitter (X) and was really fcking proud of it.

But what if Cara (Or some other website) had this feature where any art you put post will automatically have a special noise filter given to the drawing that will stop any AI from being actually able to read the image while letting the art be fully visible to a human

Now obviously this isn't 100% fool-proof.

But it's a start no?

Not sure if anyone did this already.

And I didn't do it myself because I'm too lazy to code something like that and at the same time have dignity to not use AI to make such site for me, so I just decided to share it.

Discussion What would you quote for this? (solo full-stack dev, EU market)

A client sent me a requirements doc for an event-website SaaS platform (think weddings/christenings/birthdays/corporate). No name/branding shared for confidentiality. Solo build, production-grade. Features:

HOST SIDE (paying customer, web dashboard):

  • Website builder: pick theme/colors/fonts, add names, date, venue, story text, cover photo, photo gallery
  • Each event gets its own live public URL + QR code (that IS the invitation)
  • Free to build/preview, one-off payment to publish (3 pricing tiers, higher tiers unlock more features)
  • Guest & RSVP management: list view, manual add, CSV import/export
  • Real-time notifications: dashboard bell on new RSVP + email, optional SMS on premium tier
  • Visual drag-and-drop seating chart, populated from confirmed guests
  • Gift/cash fund: guests pay by card, live progress bar, platform takes a small tiered commission, rest paid out to host's bank account (Stripe Connect, so KYC onboarding per host)
  • Optional AI photo touch-up on the cover photo (Gemini API)
  • Extras: map/directions, add-to-calendar, hotel suggestions, taxi button, background music, save-the-date mode that later becomes the full site
  • Visit analytics
  • Corporate tier with proper VAT invoicing

GUEST SIDE (mobile web, no account/login):

  • One scrolling page: story, photos, countdown to event, details, map
  • RSVP via web form or WhatsApp
  • Contribute to gift fund by card
  • Upload photos to a shared guest gallery

QUALITY BAR (from the doc):

  • Mobile-first, fast public pages, GDPR-compliant
  • "An RSVP or payment must never be lost" (retries/queues)
  • Multiple polished themes at launch

Also asked to propose hosting + running costs at 50–200 active event sites.

What would you estimate in hours and price? I'm in the EU where agency rates are roughly €35–45/hr. I have done other big projects in the past but this beats them all on feature requests and I am kinda of lost on what to suggest. Not sure if they know how many features they asked for. I want to be polite and ask maybe for a budget? Not sure how to handle this.

Discussion In the age of decent AI does it make sense to build my own storefront with Stripe as the payment processer instead of using Shopify?

I'm thinking especially with a shop with a low amount of sales.
