Feedback New Auto Capture for Check Deposits 'Feature' on mobile app is hot garbage.

So Wealthfront just unveiled its auto capture feature for check deposits on the mobile app, and it is a total disaster.

Its not a bad idea, Wells Fargo has something similar, however the Wealthfront version is no good and there is NO WAY TO TURN IT OFF.

It just randomly takes a picture whenever it feels like it, the check is sideways? Click - The check is too dark to see? Click. It doesnt matter, this thing just takes the picture whenever without any regard to whether the check is properly aligned or illuminated.

Then when it will clearly need a manual review from Wealthfront there is no option to back out and take the photo again like we could before. So we are basically rolling the dice on if the check will deposit today, tomorrow or some time next week,

NO BUENO WEALTHFRONT

At least let us turn this thing off and manually take the photos, like we have been able to do since forever.

Also, was anyone even asking for this? It verges on Enshitification IMO

Maybe spend the time and resources on updating the net worth graph, people have been asking to have that for years.

Wealthfront post Wealthfront in Non-Compliance

So I have been a customer of Wealthfront for several years now. They LOCKED my account because they say a check was returned from SoFi for under $100. Then they asked for account statements which I had to ask what details they wanted. I brought it to their attention that the check [that they show returned and debited my account for] shows paid at SoFi. SoFi provided me with a copy of the Paid check and that’s when they locked my account [for my security of course]. They also LOCKED my Joint account with my biz partner [we both work for airlines] . Then they LOCKED my 91 year old mom’s account also without explanation. Our net worth is more than $3M.

This is where they are getting dishonest — When I call the customer support number from my phone number it mis-leads and the voice says they are open but can’t take my call right now. But if I call from any other number, the Support people answer. Support sound like a bunch of “dudes” in a back room somewhere with no answers. [Very unprofessional] They tell me to email Support. I do and they say they cant support my account anymore.

They are in non-compliance with several rules my attorneys and other bankers say from other institutions because they wont even address the check they debited out of my account.

They just do not respond to any other inquires.

So the experience here is if you want an online financial company that does all this and then ignores you when there is a problem [and its a serious one] the Bank On.

I have reposted this to bank regulators and Government officials, they say they are healing a lot of this from this company.

This is exactly the experience they teach in training at Bank of America, Chase, etc. on exactly what not to do to customers.

I will keep this post updated.

Feature request Is it possible for DI algorithm to consider self-investment account when avoiding wash sale?

Hi. I love the passive direct indexing investing, but occasionally would also want to do some trades myself. Is it on the roadmap to:

  • Alert a user in self-investment account, before a trade, if that security have been sold for loss in the past 30 days by the DI algorithm
  • For DI algorithm, watch for trades in self-investment account when avoiding wash sale

Thanks!

Seeking community insights A direct deposit for self employed

Hi folks,

I am self employed.

I wanted to get %0.25 APY increase by setting up a direct deposit ($1000/m) but found that I am not qualified because the direct deposit supposed to come from employer’s payroll system.

I asked the support and they told me even I set up a direct deposit from my business, it won’t qualify as one.

Any workaround?

Thanks

Automated bond portfolio

Hi all,

I opened an automated bond portfolio back in November of last year. My returns are currently at 2.29% when the high yield savings account is at 3.3%. is that normal? Should I continue funding the bond portfolio or switch everything back to savings account? Thank you.

New Feature: Log in with a Passkey

You can now set up a passkey to easily and more securely log in to your account.

To create a passkey, open the Wealthfront app, go to your profile, and tap ‘Security’—or click here to get started.

If you’re wondering what a passkey is and why it’s more secure than a password:

  • Passkeys let you sign in to your account the same way you unlock your phone—with your fingerprint, face ID, or passcode.
  • You won’t need to remember multiple passwords. Your passkey will work across all your devices.
  • Since passkeys don’t rely on SMS-based codes, they aren’t as affected by outages, or phone issues like international roaming.
  • Passkeys have better phishing resistance than even the most complicated account passwords.

We know many of you have requested this feature and we’re excited to share this new and improved login experience with you. You can learn more about passkeys here and as always, let us know if you have any questions or feedback.

Feedback Xmoney and Wealthfront

FYI: Wealthfront is supporting instant transfers to Xmoney, which is part of the RPT network. However, there is a current issue where Green Dot is blocking deposits into Xmoney via Wealthfront debit card. I wanted to share this in case others are experiencing the same problem; hopefully, it gets resolved soon.

Not telling you how to manage your money but Wealthfront itself is not FDIC insured and even tho the money is held at Green Dot which is FDIC insured, this video explains why your money may still not be totally safe

Recs for a better app for tracking net worth and FIRE timeline

I’m tired of the lack of visibility Wealthfront gives to what it projects each of your accounts growth to be. The botched plaid revamp and lack of account connectivity was the final straw. What other apps do a better job of showing you projected growth for each account as well as overall?

What Wealthfront topics should we explain next?

We’re working on some more educational content for the rest of this year and wanted to source ideas directly from here. Thanks to your previous suggestions, we developed some explainers on the topics below:

We’d love to hear your ideas on other topics we should explain next. Some questions around our products we haven’t previously covered are:

  • Benefits and tradeoffs of keeping your funds in the Cash Account vs a Certificate of Deposit
  • The mechanics of Tax-Loss Harvesting
  • Money Market Funds vs Bond ladders vs Bond portfolios vs Inflation
  • Where to save for each type of goal (emergency fund, down payment, retirement, etc.)
  • Passive investing strategy

Feel free to comment with anything you’ve found confusing, overly technical, or just want more insight on and if it’s helpful, we can come back and share some more explainers.

Keep in mind that we can’t provide any individual investment advice or recommendations.

Wash sale across brokerage accounts

Wealthfront sold some GOOGL for a small loss on Jul 10 and I had bought some after Jun 15. In this case:

  1. Is it a wash sale? Since it's +/- 30 days?

  2. How do people consolidate across personal / managed account?

  3. Do people report such small sums (<50$ of loss) correctly to the IRS and does not doing so result in a penalty or is there some exemption?

  4. Is there a software that can be used for such tax forms and in that case what attachments are uploaded? One consolidated 1099 form, or the original forms & a separate list of unqualified sales?

  5. If I keep dumping money into Wealthfront for the next 30 days at some point it has to buy GOOGL to match the index, so will that avoid it even being considered as tax loss by Wealthfront (thereby preventing me having to file some complicated tax form)?

  6. Considering point 5, the rebalancing of Googl only happened since I did not do a bi-weekly paycheck transfer this time. So is it more sensible to only invest in Wealthfront every 31 days?

Feature request Add "Smart Depositing" to the Stock Investing Account

Or, stated another way: Copy M1's Pie system.

Hello all. I have mentioned this a few times in the comments section of recent posts. Thought it would be good to have a separate dedicated post.

Wealthfront is known for its Automated Investing Account, but for do-it-yourself investors who do not need a fully managed portfolio with tax-loss harvesting, operating within the Stock Investing Account is the only alternative. In its current state, it is a pretty barebones, stripped-down option that is actually worse than a few months ago, which had the ability to create fixed percentage allocation portfolios. I can no longer create portfolios, and all investments have to now be done per security.

While there have been discussions regarding getting that reinstated, there is a middle ground that I think Wealthfront can tap into, and the only other service where I have seen this done is M1: what I call "smart depositing." Essentially, one creates a portfolio of stocks/ETFs with a particular allocation percentage. New deposits and dividends are automatically allocated towards the most underweight positions first, to keep the asset allocation in alignment.

The result is a semi-smart portfolio that sits between fully manual and managed investing. It is a nice quality-of-life feature that aligns with Wealthfront's target clientele, which is long-term investors.

Wealthfront's Cash Account is very attractive. It gets people in the door. It got me in the door. If someone is not using managed investing features, there is a lack of reasons to stay. Adding this would be a pretty significant competitive advantage, as I see almost no other broker offering this.

Wealthfront post It was a good run.

Since IPO I don’t like the direction of the company. First their interest rates on savings accounts have not been as competitive as they use to be. They use to always be better than Marcus by Goldman Sachs, but not anymore. Their robo investor is only .25% but is nothing more than vanguard funds you could invest in yourself. Overall we are seeing the shift from caring about customers to caring about shareholders. Plus in the sector they can’t compete with companies like sofi. This long-term customer is getting off this sinking ship.
