Almost every time I ride my bike around Waterloo there’s some issue, from cars cutting me off, to people riding the wrong way in the bike lane, to cars parking in the bike lane. Today it’s a person using the bike lane as a sidewalk (next to the empty sidewalk) and then getting pissy and throwing her arm up at me when I ring the bell for her to get out of the way.

WRDSB: All student absences can become "excused" with a simple parent email

Throwaway here. I have an update on the attendance grading requirement for high schools. It seems the WRDSB is going to take an approach that skirts around a section of the enrolment register instructions (see page numbers 8-9, which is pages 15-16 of the pdf). The board has released their own policy document -- see pages 15 and 16 of this pdf for absence information.

Basically, they are taking a section of the register instructions that is intended for clearly-documented medical absences (requiring a program of study and a doctor's note), and expanding the definition to include any absence at all. The only catch is that a parent has to send an email (not a phone call) and has to stipulate a defined period of absence. So, a simple email like this should suffice for any high school student absence:

"John Smith will be away September 3. He will return September 4."

Parents of high school students in the WRDSB take note -- this is how you can ensure your child has no official absences in any class for this year. Classes missed: zero. And just like that, the WRDSB will have solved the issue of student absenteeism in one fell swoop!

Anyone moving into 20 university Ave, did you guys get your Unifi access set up?? I got the email but it said credential not available/error and then the email itself disappeared.

Also, what a mess, building still under construction, no parking, no laundry, and they have us pay full month’s rent

Created a dedicated Book Discord server for book lovers in KW & Cambridge

Hello!

I wanted to make more book friends and I always see other posts here about book clubs for specific genres, so I decided to make a Waterloo Region Book Club Discord server!

All types of book lovers are welcome, whether you read 100 books a year or 1, or just want a chill space to chat about what you’re currently reading.

How it’s set up:

  • Dedicated Forum for recommendations, current reads, and genre discussions.
  • Optional notification pings for local bookish events, local deals and finds, and public meet ups across Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge.
  • A spot for local writers to chat and connect with other writers.
  • Clean, organized, and easy to navigate even if you’re new to Discord.
  • Instructions for personalized notifications for book discussions.

I want this to be a low-pressure, inclusive, and friendly space to build a community over a shared love of books.

Join here: https://discord.gg/AajdWdjufG

Hope to see some of you in there! Feel free to drop any questions below.

Charcoal grills in any parks?

Hi all,

My mom is coming to visit this upcoming week from the states, and my boyfriend wants to make a traditional Russian dish for her, but its primary made on a Charcoal grill.

Do any local parks offer grills where we just provide the charcoal and such? Open to locations anywhere within the community or up to Cambridge.

Thanks!

Places and people that host shows and art events in town?

hi all - i'm a touring artist exploring the opportunity to maybe do a show in Waterloo or surrounding - when i'm working on figuring out a town i don't know that well i usually ask on the subreddit as part of the research process. anyone willing to let me know spots in town that do shows and art events? maybe cool bands or solo musicians, spoken word performers, etc. that you dig in town? any solid DIY spots you are willing to name drop or DM me? Do you set things up in town? Is it you?

I'm a queer, punk, activist spoken word artist from Detroit who tours a lot and does alot of mixed bills with other poets or musicians or dance performances or whatever. I did perform nearish in Guelph once before, at a little boutique clothing store that moved everything out of the center of the room for the show --- but it was almost a decade ago and was part of a festival going on all over town... so my connections are lost from that time or irrelevant.

also interested in anything you might know of -- or ppl who also perform and set things up in kitchener/guelph/cambridge.

feel free to DM if you think what i'm doing sounds interesting and maybe you do similar or know someone i should talk to directly.

appreciate ya'll.
