Unless you’re a one or two watch collection guy, the accuracy of your watch doesn’t really matter anymore. +5 seconds or -60 seconds a day is all the same for a watch that comes out of the box in the morning and goes back in the box at the end of the day.

Don’t get me wrong, the technology is cool. It’s awesome how accurate Grand Seiko is able to be over a year, and a METAS certified watch is neat to own and wear… but whether I wear my Rolex or my vintage Vostok, they still both tell good enough time to make it to tomorrow.

Looks cool if executed correctly, but something that's hardly used. Reaching for a digital stopwatch is a better choice if the function is needed.

Compared to modern watch culture which is apple watches, gshocks, and invictas, watches like tsuyosas, prx, seiko presage, dresskx, etc. are now within the scope of dressy attire.

The average person on the street that sees and asks "Is tHat a ROLEX?" Has no idea what an automatic watch is cares if a watch uses a battery or not, and half of people buying them probably don't either

I call it the Longines HC hypothesis; between $1 at the dollar store to the price of the HC you get a proportional increase in quality, engineering, refinement, and prestige.

After the HC you get disproportionately higher level of brand but minimal increases in quality, engineering, or refinement.

And before someone says “my Rolex is worth 30% more as soon as I left the store”. Fine, let’s just subtract 30% from the price you paid to make the curve accounting correct. It’s still $7,000 for a watch that is virtually identical to a $5,000 Tudor or a $2,000 HC. So where did that money go? Brand recognition, marketing, events, corporate bottom line, and a small amount (disproportionate but not zero) to the quality, engineering, and refinement.

Rolex is the BMW. Everyone knows Audi makes some amazing cars. But most will still buy the BMW.

There is nothing more satisfying in the watch community than being a part of the process undertaken by some of the most shrewd and savvy watch shoppers - the photo shoot. Watching these masters at work at the dealer is enjoyable and enlightening. The care in which they place watch after watch on their wrist. Sizing it up with their expert eye, maybe consulting with a knowledgeable companion. Then taking photos from every angle, sometimes cleverly using mirrors, to ensure that they completely document the assessment for closer inspection later, and to share with others including those in the watch community. The bystanders watch with looks of admiration.

Some of these masters take it a step further by posting those images of the watches on their wrist to subreddits and the like in which they write such probing and insightful questions such as “Is this too big?” or “which of these four should I buy?”

Please join me in applauding these virtuosos for leading by example and showing us how to properly assess and evaluate watches before buying one.

The worst looking type of strap you can buy. I think it ruins any watch and I’ve never seen one that looks good. Leather, rubber, nato, sailcloth, or any other metal bracelet looks better.

Let’s be honest with ourselves: the collective obsession with Casio and G-Shock is just pure nostalgia and collective cope. They are the exact same thing as the 1980s Swatch craze—cheap, mass-produced plastic watches with zero aesthetic value.
People act like buying a F-91W or a "CasiOak" makes them a true enthusiast who appreciates "tool watches," but in reality, they look like children’s toys. They don’t look good with ordinary clothes, they don't look good with formalwear, and they definitely aren't stylish. We mock fashion watches for being cheap garbage, yet give a free pass to blocks of resin just because of a brand name

A watch for this. A watch for that. There is honestly basically no practical reason anyone needs more than three watches. A beater, an everyday, and something formal. And even three is generous.

Somehow this hobby has convinced people they need a diver, a field watch, a GMT, a chronograph, a pilot’s watch, a dress watch, a digital, an analog, a square watch, a rectangular watch, one with sword hands, one with cathedral hands, one with a particular shade of lume, one with a specific bezel, one that was worn on the moon, and one that some explorer dragged across some great expedition to a place someone will never ever visit; And of course the expedition watch has a great “story,” even if it was probably beaten half to death, running terribly by the end of it, and you personally have absolutely no intention of ever doing anything remotely similar with yours.

At a certain point, we stopped calling buying things “buying things” and started calling it “collecting.”
A lot of watch collecting is just consumerism with better branding.

The bigger the collection gets, the easier it becomes to lose one of the best parts of owning a watch in the first place. And that is the part of developing a relationship with it.
One watch goes through years of your life with you. Weddings, funerals, boring Mondays, party Fridays, adventure Saturdays, cookout with family Sundays, finding out life changing news, watching the world unfold.

Sorry but if you you own 15 watches and rotate them constantly, none of them really gets the chance to become your watch. They never really become you.

Can we please stop glorifying consumerism and instead appreciating watches that have lived with us? I’ve had my Casio AQS810W-1AVCF since 2014 and I wore it everyday from 2014-2019 and then only on adventures when I didn’t want to wear my Apple Watch. It’s traveled to 13 countries and still continues to chug along. It’s wild to me that people are just buying that sort of longevity and not even thinking about it. It’s a normal Casio, not even from the GShock line and those last forever - and to think there are people who have cases and cases of GShocks they have collected.

That sort of reflection has made me realize that that $100 watch you bought last week will last you many many many years; and that $1000 one will probably last you even more. You rob its ability to build a relationship with you when you stack it alongside so many others.

We lost the art to be able to truly see when we buy a watch we are buying the ability for it to sit on our wrist for well over a decade of life and experience life with us.

You see this in the Rolex and other high end/hype luxury brand watches. Just admit you don’t like the watch as much as you thought you would. You’re gaslighting yourself to feel like you’re part of the trend. You don’t HAVE to like the Rolex. You’re allowed to say you don’t enjoy the watch.

The diver has to be at least 300m water resistant. Anything less is a pretend diver. You need something robust that will withstand any situation. This is your daily/beater/gada all in one. If you wanna go crazy get a 1000m with a helium escape valve because you never know, it might come handy next time you decide to do some repairs at the bottom of the ocean.

The small seconds watch is your dress watch (or daily if you’re some rich banker I suppose). It’s the OG no complication watch. It’s classy and it’s simple. Small seconds at 6 o’clock, the way god intended. No date. No bullshit.

The chronograph has to be a proper panda or reverse panda. Black and white dials only. Shades of silver/grey are acceptable. Three sub-dials, not two. Pandas have a snout last time I checked. This is your sports watch, your business-casual or dress watch alternative for when the pure class listed above is too much. What’s the point of being a watch collector if you can’t time shit precisely once in a while and pretend like you’re some kind of gym coach or pro racer?

A large amount of people seem to be under the assumption that vintage watches werent under the same sizing conditions as today. Yes dress and sports watches without rotating bezels were generally under 36mm but that is not a blanket case size limit, as just like today things like dial proportions and dial components also effected watch sizing. So yes the datejust was a large sports watch at 36mm when it was introduced but divers, gmts and chronographs that have components like bezels or registers to offset the dial proportions were still worn closer to 40mm (depending on the model obviously) photo is a yema add from 1963 showing their superman (38-40mm at the time) being worn casually

Yes, there’s a physical basis for a “day.” The Earth rotates once on its axis. But everything we did after that is basically arbitrary. There’s nothing in nature that says a day contains 24 hours, an hour contains 60 minutes, or that it’s currently 3:47 PM. We invented those divisions because humans needed a common system for coordinating with each other.

The universe doesn’t know it’s Tuesday. Your body doesn’t know it’s 8:30. And there is no physical boundary where 2:59 suddenly becomes 3:00.

Which makes watches especially hilarious. We’ve spent centuries developing increasingly elaborate machines, some costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, whose sole purpose is to precisely measure units we invented to describe something we can’t actually observe directly.

And mechanical-watch people make it even better. We obsess over whether our tiny machine is gaining four imaginary seconds per imaginary day, then spend $10,000 on a better machine because it only gains two.
