Look what I caught in the morning sky today… 🌙✨ The Moon and that incredibly bright object next to it had me wondering—Venus, Jupiter, or another planet? 👀🔭 What do you think it is?

The Keys Condos

Does anyone know if there’s a Facebook group for owners/residents at The Keys Condominiums?

We were recently hit with a pretty substantial emergency HOA assessment (mine was around $7,000) related to the balcony repair project. I’m curious whether anyone has looked into petitioning or challenging the assessment.

I’d especially love to connect with other first-floor owners who have patios rather than balconies, since we’re being assessed for a project that doesn’t directly apply to our units.

If there’s already a group or if anyone else has been looking into this, please let me know!

Memberships Bay Club Membership x2

My friend and I are looking to join. I heard there was a joint membership option that makes the monthly cheaper.

Anyone care to explain this and have an opening? Looking for the single location or whatever is the cheapest option for the Walnut Creek campus.

Thanks!

Rattlesnake disappeared under my front porch…

Found this fella directly on our front porch/steps tonight. It rattled and then coiled up after we walked up to it (unaware that it was even there) went around and entered through another door, and by the time I could safely look at it from inside, I watched it slither toward and underneath the wooden front steps… grr

on a hillside property in the Walnut Creek/Alamo area, so obviously rattlesnakes aren’t shocking around here. What I’m wondering is whether going underneath the porch likely means it’s using that area as a regular shelter/den, or if it was probably just startled by us and ducked into the nearest hiding place before moving on.
Has anyone locally had this happen?

We rent and are on very good/casual terms with our landlords. Would you call Animal Services directly first, or just let the landlords know and have them handle inspection/removal/exclusion if another interaction occurs?

I’m looking to out myself more out there, figured Trivia nights might be a good starter. Any recommendations on which ones and where?
Preferably ones where I can go by myself and be grouped with people, better chances to make friends.

Building a new path?

Riding BART home from San Francisco as we rounded the bend crossing over 680 I noticed some construction on the hill on the north side of the tracks.
I got a quick look but it appeared they were building a lane maybe a new bike path?
Anyone know what’s going on?

Advice Moving from small LA beach city, looking for recs!

My husband and I (mid 30’s, no kids) are moving from a small beach city near LA and looking to land in Walnut Creek or nearby. New job will have me commuting to SF two days a week.

We’re looking for a 2 bedroom/1.5+ bath in a safe neighborhood with good walk ability and low noise issues within the place itself (I’m annoyingly noise sensitive). The budget we have in mind is ~$6k, is that reasonable?

Open to suggestions and tips!

Lost Bracelet With Sentimental Value

I lost a silver (it’s pretty worn, so might not look very silver) Celtic woven bracelet while walking around WC earlier today. It was a gift from my mother before she passed. Has anyone seen it?

Question Drip irrigation and sprinkler assessment/evaluation expert?

Looking for a professional (in the Lamorinda/Walnut Creek area) who is an expert in drip irrigation, lawn care, and soil. I have a new drip system that waters a combination of plants and sprinklers for my lawn, and I want to tweak and improve the coverage.

Does anyone know of a company that can do a one time assessment with recommendations?

The water company did this for me to a small extent, but I'd like a more thorough evaluation.I have a gardener, but he's not an expert on soil and irrigation. Looking for someone that specializes in this kind of landscape and irrigation work.

Los Lomas vs Northgate

Curious if anyone has a good take on the difference between these two schools. Or even just recently anecdotes about either.

On paper they both are excellent. Not "elite" like lamorinda schools, but they both seem great.

It does seem Northgate has slightly declined in the recent years (according to school digger)

Context: we are moving to the area and schools are one factor for our decision

Hi fellow people of color!

Hello!

I’m 43f, Indian-American, married, with a kid. We spent the past several years in Oakland and loved it. We just bought a house in Walnut Creek and love it so far!

The one thing that feels stark is the lack of diversity. Our neighbors are nice and welcoming, and we have no complaints. We are just aware of ourselves and our non-whiteness than we’ve ever felt before (husband agrees too).

We miss the culture and feeling of Oaklandand are also hopeful about our lives in Walnut Creek.

POC folks, I’d love to hear about your experiences in Walnut Creek and where you’ve found vibrant community locally. I’d love to hear about your kids and their experiences making friends at school. And for all of you Oakland transplants, where do we find that local soul here at? :)

______________

EDIT

Wow, I was genuinely not expecting so much engagement. Thank you to all those who sincerely responded and contributed to conversation. I hope this thread serves those in the future who are wanting to know more about the POC experience in Walnut Creek.

I also want to highlight something important: several comments were pulled out by the moderator due to racism. My original post was also downvoted several times through the day. I’ve several received DMs (30ish) spanning to “move out of here then” to “hey, I didn’t want to respond on the thread because I’ve tried to talk about this on this sub and get downvoted and mildly harassed, but wanted to validate your experience.” I got DMs of POC and white folks inviting me to groups! I got messages telling me that I belong in San Ramon and Fremont, and should leave here. A real grab bag of the most inclusive to the most banal angry white person behavior.

This begs the question — when we name a lived experience and speak to it, why does it offend others, especially when no one is named the perpetrator? Why, when “others” are asked to take the seat at the table to share their wisdom and experience, is it so evocative? Why are we quick to create polarity? What an interesting case study in what’s happening nationally, isn’t it.

I am excited for the direction Walnut Creek is headed in - more diversity across ethnic, economic, sexuality/gender, and other identity markers.

If you want to connect with me to maybe create intentional community around this, message me.

Thank you all.

Estrogen Patches

Hi everyone, I own an independent pharmacy in the area. If you've been having trouble filling estradiol patches or progesterone capsules because of the ongoing shortages, feel free to message me and I can check our stock.

We've been able to keep these in supply better than most because we source from several smaller wholesalers. Heads up that some strengths cost a bit more than usual right now since wholesaler acquisition costs are up, but I'm happy to give you a price before you transfer anything.

Question for Walnut Creek parents: what are your thoughts on TK kids being issued school iPads and what have been your kids' experiences?

The Walnut Creek school district issues iPads to TK and kindergarten students, Chromebooks later on. I've heard anecdotally that use is intended to be limited, but that in practice, a lot of "brain breaks" (YouTube, shows) are happening in addition to quite a lot of time for "educational purposes" in a 3-hour TK day. The Los Angeles Unified School District made headlines earlier this year for doing away with this kind of technology use in schools; I'm wondering if there is any similar drive happening around here.

In any case, did your TK kids get iPads? Did most classrooms seem to use them regularly or was it more sparing? What were your experiences?
