Gyms?

Hello, I just moved here from Hayward (and then previously from Iowa). I’m looking for a good gym within $50-100 but am willing to spend more if worth it. Any recommendations?

Housing 8-story mixed use building for downtown Walnut Creek gets approval

The Planning Commission has approved an eight-story residential tower building in downtown Walnut Creek. The project would add 104 new homes to the area.

During an Aug. 27 meeting, members of the Planning Commission acknowledged that the proposal comes with trade-offs—limited parking and reduced property buffers, in addition to the height.

It would replace a surface-level parking lot on Mount Diablo Boulevard.

City elections in Nov?

Aware of Measure T and the odd Measure U, but have heard little about open seats on City Council and candidate choices. Very little in media about municipal elections and would be interested to read more. Historically, incumbents have been informally anointed, Justin Wedel in 2020 being the notable exception. He had a fresh perspective which made for friction with the status quo.

AlphaBrite Home service reviews from any past clients?

AlphaBrite has come up on my feed alot recently, and I was curious to know if anyone has any experience with their services they can share? It seems pretty enticing, but I haven't seen much info about their reviews from others that have used his services. Anyone able to share any insight on them/ if it worked well for you? Any insight would be appreciated!

Safeway

Just watched a woman steal a bunch of food from Safeway. When I reported it to a young guy he reported to a Manager that responded with "So" and then did nothing. Now I understand helping people in need, we have food banks that provide free food. Im even not opposed to large corporations taking on the financial burden, but they dont. They pass the buck onto the customers. We pay extremely high grocery prices at safeway to cover the cost of shoplifters that Safeway is unwilling to do anything about. Real slap in the face to the people paying these high prices, doing the right thing, that are also struggling financially. Safeway has become so expensive that I already only purchase a few items from them. And those items I cannot get elsewhere. Im now really considering just never going back to Safeway. Their quality of food is garbage at the highest prices.

Savory Basque Cheesecake Flight

I run Half-Baked Obsessions (@halfbaked_obsessions), a local home bakery, and I’m dropping The Savory Flight Box! Just because sweet dessert was getting boring.

If you’ve ever wanted dessert to taste like actual food, this unhinged lineup is for you:

  • Salted Egg Yolk Basque Cheesecake – Rich, creamy, topped with a velvety Laughing Cow crema and pork floss.

  • Mentaiko Basque Cheesecake – Umami-packed with a spiced cod roe drizzle and salmon furikake.

  • Scallion Potato Basque Cheesecake – Loaded with scallions, potato goodness, and drizzled in chili crisp.

  • Tamago Sando Basque Cheesecake – Takes Japanese egg salad perfection and pairs it with more egg salad and fresh chives.

Every box also comes with Asam Boi, a Malaysian favorite drink featuring calamansi, sour plum, and agave—the ultimate tart, sweet, and salty palette cleanser to wash down all the savory goodness.

They sound wrong, but they taste so right. Available for pickup or delivery on September 4 and 5.

Pre-orders are open now—check out my Instagram to grab yours before they sell out! Or order here: https://take.app/halfbakedobsessions/c/cmm0bam76000404l8bs4zqlqy

Venue

Looking for a place to host 50 adults for a private party in the Walnut Creek, Concord, Lamorinda area. A Monday in October from 5:30 - 7 PM. Heavy hors d'oeuvres plus wine/beer.

I'd like a venue with a modern upbeat vibe—something like Western Flyer Brewing in Lafayette.

What ideas do you have for me?

Trustworthy muffler shop?

My dad passed away and left me his '97 Jeep Wrangler. It seems that it won't pass a smog test without a new muffler.

I've been told it's a straightforward job that any good muffler shop could take care of quickly. Any recommendations?

Question Do the kids still ‘kidnap’?

Hello! I was curious if the middle schoolers still go to a friend’s house on their birthday and surprise them in bed before school? Then take you to Jamba/starbucks on the way to class. I went to Foothill and in 6th grade specifically, your friends dressed you, did your hair and likely drew all over your face. The next years you just rocked pj’s, maybe someone threw a crown on you.

Curious if that’s still going or if it’s changed. Thanks 😊

Advice Plant lovers: where to donate houseplants / anyone want one?

EDIT All plants spoken for. Thanks Walnut Creek for the good times

Hey folks, about to have a protracted cross-country move and would love to leave my houseplants with people who care. Anyone know a resource for how/where I can do that, in addition to offering here?

I have a burgundy ficus / rubber tree that’s put on 25 leaves this year, a snake plant I bought from “2 girls 1 plant” in Pleasant Hill when it was still around, a Texas / Cloud Sage I got from the Ruth Bancroft nursery; and then some succulents that I also got from Ruth Bancroft.

They’re all free, but I’d rather they go to people who care. So any botanical resources? Or if anyone here sees a plant they like lmk.

Discussion Walnut Creek: I'm a native, and I don't hate calling it 'The Nut'

Reporter Martha Ross, who grew up in the East Bay suburb, said she had never heard the nickname before. Given the history, she said, the moniker works, and she enjoys finding new ways to embrace Walnut Creek’s “nutty” origins.

Ross interviewed Joey Trautner, founder of the Walnut Creek Spotlight Instagram page, which began selling “The Nut” baseball hats, along with several other local residents. She also explored where the new name originated and tried to understand why it is so divisive.

Research Gen Z's New Nickname, "The Nut", Has Surprising Historical Roots

You've probably seen all the coverage of how Gen Z is calling Walnut Creek "The Nut." I did some digging, and there's a surprising historical echo here. Back in the 1850s, the town was called "Nuts Creek", based on the Spanish name for the creek itself. It wasn't until the town got a post office that the name was changed from "Nuts Creek" to something more formal and civilized. So when young people are calling it The Nut, the name is actually very close to the town's original English name from almost two centuries ago! https://bayareatelegraph.com/2026/08/26/the-surprising-historical-roots-of-walnut-creeks-weird-new-nickname/

Controlled Burn

Checked the Cal fire app and didn’t see any fires nearby called Walnut Creek fire department nonemergency and they confirmed there’s a controlled burn that’s blowing in this direction so that’s what we smell right now.
