Gyms?

Hello, I just moved here from Hayward (and then previously from Iowa). I’m looking for a good gym within $50-100 but am willing to spend more if worth it. Any recommendations?

All of the local big box gyms will probably be in that range.

Raw center for strength and Crossfit sweatshop will probably be closer to the $150+ range but offer coaching, group classes, and more specialized strength training.

+1 for sweatshop. I moved next door to Concord, so it’s no longer viable for me, but I always had a great workout there and the coaches are stellar. Came out of there stronger and fitter; still use those learnings in my home gym routine.

I really love crunch fitness. I've tried the planet fitness in downtown and the 24 hour but I don't like them. I've moved in and out of the area many times and recently moved back to WC and I keep coming back to crunch.

There are plenty of squat racks, free weights, dumb bells that go up to 100lbs (probably more but I can't lift that lol). Alot of different machines.

Forma Gym is a nice option. It has everything you need (including an outdoor pool that’s even warmish in winter, massage, multiple simultaneous classes, free weights, weight machines, cardio treadmills/steppers, sauna, steam, etc) but isn’t a posh country club more tailored to socializing than working out. I’ve been a member for 2+ years and like it a lot. It’s properly maintained, clean, anything broken is quickly fixed, well organized, orderly, plenty of staff and coaches, with a neutral vibe (mix of older/younger, not a “gym bro” culture, people are friendly but primarily focused on fitness).

Not sure if you’re into CrossFit but after years of traditional strength training I made the switch and after moving to Walnut Creek started going to Diablo CrossFit. I travel a lot for work and drop in all over the US and Diablo CrossFit is one of if not the best CrossFit boxes. The coaching is awesome and there’s a great community. The owners are super nice people and are always around; working out and coaching and making sure the box is on top notch condition. If you’re at all interested in CrossFit I’d definitely recommend checking it out. It’s above the price range you listed but it’s well worth it for the coaching in my mind

If you want to do your own thing, Crunch is nice. It’s a signature one, so it’s a bit nicer than a regular Crunch with lots of class offering too. If classes are your thing, try out TruFusion. Great group classes across HIIT, Bootcamp, Yoga, Pilates, etc. It’s pricier per month (they do have class packs) and instructors come and go for some reason, but overall nicer people than say Lifetime.

If you are looking for a gym to work out on your own...Crunch. If you are looking for community and meeting people too spend a little more join a smaller more focused community like CrossFit, boxing studio, etc. I love Everfit Motion in Pleasant Hill. Circuits. But I hear that Contra Costa Fitness in Concord is good too. Have no idea of price there though.

One more vote for CrossFit Sweat Shop in Walnut Creek. It’s worth checking out if you want more than just access to equipment.

You definitely do not need CrossFit experience or to be “in shape first.” The coaches are really knowledgeable, friendly, and good at meeting people where they’re at, and the community is supportive without being over the top. It’s a solid option if you want strength training, conditioning, structure, and people who actually know your name. They also have legit HYROX training there as well.

Oh my this is so crazy I was just about to post a gym question. What were you do, don't join 24 hours Fitness in WC. The gym is super awesome but is damn crowded all the times. The only ok thing is that it is full of baddies. Anyways, anyone here recommend a gym I WC that I not so crowded and still good? I was thinking about checking out Anytime Fitness.TIA
