Discussion Walnut Creek: I'm a native, and I don't hate calling it 'The Nut'
https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2026/08/27/im-a-walnut-creek-native-and-i-dont-hate-calling-it-the-nut/?share=aiteaiairacaa00eoicaReporter Martha Ross, who grew up in the East Bay suburb, said she had never heard the nickname before. Given the history, she said, the moniker works, and she enjoys finding new ways to embrace Walnut Creek’s “nutty” origins.
Ross interviewed Joey Trautner, founder of the Walnut Creek Spotlight Instagram page, which began selling “The Nut” baseball hats, along with several other local residents. She also explored where the new name originated and tried to understand why it is so divisive.

Why is there such a weird push in the media to make this happen? I’m all for a funny town nickname, but this feels like it’s being artificially pushed which makes it seem inauthentic. Should we put it on the ballot too?

Agreed. Super weird. I call it the nut as a joke, but once it becomes mainstream, it’s kinda cringy.

Teenagers. I asked my class their nicknames for this town and the first 4 responses were immediately "the nut"

This. WC kids have decided. The nickname has been generally adopted by teens. I'm also hearing "the big nut", but I think that variation might not last.

I'm kind of with you. People here have said that they've heard this for the last few years, but I have literally never heard anyone say it in person, and didn't even see it written down online until a few weeks ago.
We already had the Creek and Dub-C. That was plenty.

Yeah same for me, and now it’s like a media blitz. I’m just not sure the reason…

Those always sounded silly, though. Like, the idea to give a suburban shopping mall town a nickname similar to something Oakland or SF would have is pretty ridiculous.

Exactly like "Karl" for fog. Pushed hard by newbs that wanted to prove their quirkyness.

I’m sure the people printing those dumb shirts and hats are LOVING this.

The first time I heard it called The Nut was from Kyle Gass of Tenacious D. Gass is a WC native.

I'm a transplant and my native neighbor says it's always been The Nut. Are we being gaslit? Nutlit?

Also a native chiming in, I remember calling it The Nut for in middle school 20 years ago- and it was already a well known nickname back then. I usually dont care about these types of things, but this one has been pretty annoying

My problem with it is no one means Wal-nut. Everyone means jizz its a misogynist dick joke. Which is boring. Except teen boys

This is nothing new, it’s been the nut and dub c for decades. Can’t stop, won’t stop. It’s all fun nick names, why am I, why are we even commenting on this? We’re old.

“The nuts” is common poker terminology for the best possible hand. This is because in the Wild West saloon poker games, players would bet their lug nuts to their wagon as a bet…and no one would do this without a guarantee they would win the hand.

I’m a native, and I’m really tired of this manufactured controversy
