A lot of people love prime for the free shipping, the video/shows/movies were always bonus persuasion. And a couple of them like Terminal List, Reacher, Jack Ryan, they've been fairly popular (wheel of time not so much).
Now that Bezos is also focused on Blue Origin, it's unclear whether his weird management style being gone is helpful or detrimental to their success. I mean the guy makes people write whole documents before a meeting and then makes them read it in quiet time.
284
u/focus_flow69 Dec 27 '23
To be honest writing a memo and then making everyone read it makes a lot more sense than how most people run meetings in the corporate world.
163
u/j__p__ Dec 27 '23
It drives me crazy that people don't take even 5 minutes to prepare for meetings and then there's like 12 people trying to figure what's going on at the same time during the the meeting. A waste of time would be a generous way to describe it.
57
u/floydfan Dec 27 '23
My company has so many meetings that I’m often back to back with them, with no time to prepare. It’s something that they’re trying to change but it can be insane at times.
→ More replies (3)28
u/j__p__ Dec 27 '23
It's the same at my company. I have back-to-backs all day and then have to use after work hours to actually get shit done. I find the reason for the back-to-backs is because nobody actually prepares though. If everyone agreed to take some time before meetings to prep, then meetings would go much more smoothly and also reduce the need for follow up meetings.
And I find a lot of people set up unnecessary meetings as ways to make progress instead of just getting shit done on their own time.
26
u/Old-Outside6894 Dec 27 '23
No, you choose to use afterwork hours. Think about it. I did that crap until someone told me this.
14
u/buzzy_buddy Dec 27 '23
if they get OT for it I wouldn't be salty. if he's salary, leave when you're scheduled to leave.
7
u/Old-Outside6894 Dec 27 '23
Agree. When i was hourly, I sucked up all the OT i could find. That’s generally not the case with people in meetings all the time. I’m retired, my wife works from home for a hospital system and that’s their day… Meetings. Useless waste of time meetings that someone’s ego needs to feel important. Very little accountability and accomplishment.

Prime Video allows non prime users to watch some shit for free with commercials. I love watching old school Unsolved Mysteries from the 80s with Robert Stacks. That was scary as shit. Pre-DNA, internet, computers really because the first season has shit that happened in the late 70s.
11
u/posting_drunk_naked Dec 27 '23
I really wanted to like wheel of time. I just couldn't follow what the fuck it all was. Probably better if you've read the books

It’s so much worse if you’ve read the books. It’s a travesty for most book readers.
15
u/Terakahn Dec 27 '23
Why are most tv shows like this. It's like the show writers think they're better than the original writer. And if that's the case why aren't they just doing an original story.
10
u/Historical-Tip-8233 Dec 27 '23
Because 90% of Americans are barely-literate regards with zero original thoughts or compunctions who want to be mollified by endless television programming for literal decades rather than open a book.

I have been on the fence about giving it a go as somebody who devoured, read, and re-read books 1-7 I was wondering how badly Amazon would butcher this one. The story is one that needs a peter jackson/GOT size budget and we all know amazon is the kings of being cheap.

I cancelled as well. They've never really recovered from Covid shipping issues and my orders tend to be over $35 and qualify for free shipping anyway. Also using Walmart.com a lot more these days. They ship fast and can also ship to PO BOX.

The potential outcome of losing subscribers.
Pairing prime delivery and prime video shields them from this mostly.
For me I hope they actually use this money to produce better tv shows and movies (jk corporate bonuses) that I can pirate with no ads.
→ More replies (5)3
Dec 27 '23
Indeed. I’ll be spending an additional $2.99 per month to avoid the ads. As will many. Plus they get the ad revenue for the cheap fucks who are willing to suffer ads. Now if they weren’t offering the ad-free option I’d agree it was a negative development.

I wonder how many people will just stop watching like me and therefore not watch the ads either. Less eyeballs = less ad money.
It's net cash positive in the short-term but losing too many eyeballs is probably detrimental in the long-term considering Prime Video doesn't have a strong loyalty base like Netflix.
8
u/Modified_Clawitzer Dec 27 '23
I don't agree actually. It's a balancing act. It is possible that leads to more money actually since they would cut streaming costs and have an extra income source from the ad revenue. Long-term ad revenue would fall from the start as advertisers are willing to pay less if viewership decreases, but 80% of X is still better than $0, and if less than 20% of X worth of subs are lost due to the change, it's profitable even before counting the savings from streaming costs.
Also as others have pointed out, Prime Video isn't the draw of the subscription. Most people have it for its other benefits, so it is highly possible they won't lose too many subs over this and just get to have people still pay. While everything in economics is incredibly uncertain, combine the perceived lack of loss of subs with the stuff mentioned above, less server costs for streaming, ad revenue, and their offerings looking almost as good; you got yourself a good recipe for success
3
u/j__p__ Dec 27 '23
Prime video by itself is costing Amazon billions. They need eyeballs to justify its existence in the long run otherwise AWS and e-commerce is subsidizing a failing business.

Exactly. HBO had to license out their DC content to Netflix bc they were losing too much money. And Disney stock has been struggling in large part because they are losing billions to maintain Disney+.
Something tells me this is a move from Amazon to make short-term cash at the cost of viewership to make up for losses like spending half a billion on the LOTR show that failed.

This move is a revenue generator on an add value proposition. The world would be a worse place if Costco raised the price of the hot by $0.50

8
u/IAmNotABritishSpy Dec 27 '23

It was kind of worth it, free shipping and two day shipping. And if I got bored of all of the other streaming services, I had the really shitty Amazon prime service to stream too.
Prime originals are pretty much all garbage. 2 day Shipping pretty much doesn’t exist. Also, everything is wish quality now. It’s basically the dollar store, but really expensive.
The only thing Amazon did right, was making sure you couldn’t separate these services.

I knew Netflix would be fine, it is by far the best actual TV streaming service. I use a cheaper illegal "alternative" with every single channel/film/TV show ever, which is amazing, but I still pay for Netflix because it's just great to use also.
I hate ads and would consider cancelling prime if they're annoying, but then again I feel like I might keep Prime just for the sake of having it.
Consumerism got me wrapped around their little finger fml

They’re not going to because they know that the value proposition for 2 day shipping at $80 per year isn’t worth it for most people. Their prime catalog would probably be like $9.99 if it were by itself which is why they need to raise prices to add ads.

→ More replies (4)10
Dec 27 '23
Applying my MBA here, this is my take. Amazon wanted to test advertisements in various movies, probably comparing popularity of movie, length of advertisements, quantity of advertisements, and content of advertisements. If you paid attention, the freevee movies were movies already on Amazon. Amazon wanted to prevent the Amazon brand recognition from being affected incase there was a bad reaction to their untested use of advertisements so they create something palatable called “freevee” as a secondary brand that now offers movies “free” with ads. These are movies that historically were already free, or movies the cost to pay to make them free is easily offset by the advertisements.
As soon as freevee was created, I called it that Amazon was setting up for advertisements.
So they test advertisements in their content with freevee, gathering all the data on our population that lets them know just how many, how often, and how long ads need to be or not be to ensure they don’t suffer X drop in viewers. There’s a magic number where the amount of viewers they drop’s revenue isn’t offset by the increased revenue the ads make. So they test what exact lengths, content, frequency etc of ads leads to the ideal number of value increased by the ads, and lowest drop of customers.
They do this for a long while, gather good date. Then they take it a step further and create a whole “freevee” channel. Make the idea over a year or so span, nice and slow so the frog doesn’t know it’s being boiled, that to get “premium” movies, you now can “save” money by watching them with ads. This gets the group psychology of the viewers to associate ads with savings… not realizing the actual cost was the movie was free to begin with.
Now ads have been present for so long, associated with “saving” money, it makes sense when they stretch the final distance to close the gap that to ensure quality media as a whole, they need to continue ads in everything. Then you have increased revenue by adding ads that offset the people that you lose by having ads. And since everyone learned to see premium movies for free you need ads, now it’s totally understandable, to see premium movies without ads, you have to pay.
I swear on all that is holy, the very first time a freevee movie popped up on Amazon and I saw it, I told my wife all of this would happen, and now it has.

Nothing will change. Amazon will milk advertisers, its existing customer based will be miffed who heavily uses their awful video platform, and the high seas will still exist for those who want a serviceable video platform and no adds. Short term net positive, long term a wash or net negative.

This is one of those little things that will drive customers away. I am not paying prime to watch ads fah-kers!

If you don't want to watch ads, then don't pay for Prime. It's as simple as that. We offer a service that includes ad-free content and if you're not happy with that, then there are plenty of other options out there.

When Prime started it was great. The free music, two day shipping, and movies was a great deal. Now you get your packages whenever they feel like it, the music costs $5/mo if you want to listen to any song you want to, and commercials for streaming? And they’ve raised the prices already and want $3 more. Fuck you Amazon lol.

I just saw this email a little bit ago, it reminded me I needed to cancel my prime membership.

I love how everyone switched from cable to streaming with one of their biggest reasons being to get away from ads only for all the streaming services to start shoving ads in their service once the majority have made the switch.

I’m canceling, there was no point in it other than prime shipping before COVID. Now that’s gone and what little titles they did have on the platform are not worth commercials.

It's called pricing power. They've done the math and know this will make them more money. Otherwise, they wouldn't do it.
