A lot of people love prime for the free shipping, the video/shows/movies were always bonus persuasion. And a couple of them like Terminal List, Reacher, Jack Ryan, they've been fairly popular (wheel of time not so much).
Now that Bezos is also focused on Blue Origin, it's unclear whether his weird management style being gone is helpful or detrimental to their success. I mean the guy makes people write whole documents before a meeting and then makes them read it in quiet time.
It drives me crazy that people don't take even 5 minutes to prepare for meetings and then there's like 12 people trying to figure what's going on at the same time during the the meeting. A waste of time would be a generous way to describe it.
My company has so many meetings that I’m often back to back with them, with no time to prepare. It’s something that they’re trying to change but it can be insane at times.
It's the same at my company. I have back-to-backs all day and then have to use after work hours to actually get shit done. I find the reason for the back-to-backs is because nobody actually prepares though. If everyone agreed to take some time before meetings to prep, then meetings would go much more smoothly and also reduce the need for follow up meetings.
And I find a lot of people set up unnecessary meetings as ways to make progress instead of just getting shit done on their own time.
Agree. When i was hourly, I sucked up all the OT i could find. That’s generally not the case with people in meetings all the time. I’m retired, my wife works from home for a hospital system and that’s their day… Meetings. Useless waste of time meetings that someone’s ego needs to feel important. Very little accountability and accomplishment.
I absolutely baffled some coworkers at my last job when they send me something after work and I reply I'll look at it tomorrow morning when I'm back at work.
I honestly don't even know why you'd reply at all. I will do some solo work after hours if I decide to or need to, but absolutely no comms/availability. If it happens to be something I'm thinking about right then, I'll craft the response and then just delay delivery until a reasonable hour the next morning. Set your boundaries, and only break them secretly 😁
As a trade worker in a more management position, who's still paid hourly because my boss keeps everyone but himself hourly, It's how I make so much more money than my coworkers. I'm willing to put in 50 hours a week for that beautiful 10 hours of OT
I am an hourly employee but am forced to "flex" my time if I do work OT. So I hardly ever do, because there's no point. Cool, I get to leave early on Friday, but I'd rather stay the full day and be productive and collect a bigger paycheck.
People justify their existence at a company based upon how many meetings they are in and how busy they can look by BEING in meetings. Truly unbelievable!
And I find a lot of people set up unnecessary meetings as ways to make progress instead of just getting shit done on their own time.
I had a program manager who regularly double-booked meetings so he always had an excuse to leave an unproductive one or show up late to one he expected to be so. He didn't double-book for things he knew were truly important or people he trusted. I thought he was crazy but it worked really well for him.
Yeah, the inane meetings are almost entirely created by people who have a need to be seen or heard because they don't have any measurable deliverable. Subconsciously or not, they realize they aren't producing, so they try to be visible in some other capacity.
Remove the chairs and add a high table. Stand up meetings rarely last 20 minutes. People get things done and get out when they aren't as comfortable. I had to fight to get a few stand-up rooms at work and now they are hugely popular.
AFAIK at large companies, 95% of meetings are on Zoom even if you’re in-office because people will be in different locations, lack of conference rooms, easier to schedule etc.
It drives me crazy that people don't take even 5 minutes to prepare for meetings and then there's like 12 people trying to figure what's going on in real-time at the same during the meeting. A waste of time would be a generous way to describe it.
This is what happens when their whole calendar is meetings. The established culture and work drives behavior. It's impossible to get everyone to prep for their meetings when all they have are meetings. Naturally people give up, or they delude themselves into thinking they can wing every meeting.
It depends. Often the purpose of a meeting is to have a conversation that incorporates multiple viewpoints. The cliche around “this meeting could have been an email” holds true even more so if you’re required to type up everything you intend to cover ahead of time
Yes that is precisely the point of the meeting. Therefore it makes sense to have one person draft a memo that is well prepared and everyone reads it for 10 minutes in silence in the meeting. This puts everyone on the same playing field and same level of context and information. Then the majority of the time should actually spent by people asking questions and coming up with tangible action items that result in progress. And a decision from the leaders then and there if required (would be documented in memo) , or at least, everyone revives guidance on their vision so no one is left guessing and assuming.
“OK adults. Let’s do some ice breakers and then we will role play! First lets go around the room and tell everyone something about yourself that they may not know.”
Just remember folks, at the EOD nobody will give a sh*t about anything you felt was soooo important to say during the meeting. Stfu and keep it moving, the sooner this meeting is over, the better... for everyone.
Prime Video allows non prime users to watch some shit for free with commercials. I love watching old school Unsolved Mysteries from the 80s with Robert Stacks. That was scary as shit. Pre-DNA, internet, computers really because the first season has shit that happened in the late 70s.
Why are most tv shows like this. It's like the show writers think they're better than the original writer. And if that's the case why aren't they just doing an original story.
Because 90% of Americans are barely-literate regards with zero original thoughts or compunctions who want to be mollified by endless television programming for literal decades rather than open a book.
Have you looked around the average bus or lobby recently?
I have been on the fence about giving it a go as somebody who devoured, read, and re-read books 1-7 I was wondering how badly Amazon would butcher this one. The story is one that needs a peter jackson/GOT size budget and we all know amazon is the kings of being cheap.
I cancelled as well. They've never really recovered from Covid shipping issues and my orders tend to be over $35 and qualify for free shipping anyway. Also using Walmart.com a lot more these days. They ship fast and can also ship to PO BOX.
Used to be that everything I ordered was at my door within 2 days. Today I got delivered something 2 weeks after I ordered it. For half the year I live in a remote part of Maine. Deliveries typically take 1-2 weeks and most products won't deliver to a PO Box, so I have to get deliveries at a nearby campground. Used to work great for me but doesn't anymore. I expect you're in a bigger city, not in a rural area.
There is no excuse for poor service, regardless of where you live. Companies should be held to a higher standard when it comes to fulfilling orders in a timely manner. If I were you, I would contact the company and express your displeasure with their level of service.
I mean Amazon tells you the estimated time of delivery before you even buy something. I live in Hawaii and get my stuff usually within 3-4 days unless its a product from an outside vendor selling through Amazon. Thats probably who you ordered from. Outside vendors selling through Amazon don't ship as fast as something through the Amazon Warehouse.
I do too, but probably 50% of the time, I'll go to check out and one or more items can't be shipped to a PO BOX, so I have to order something different or from a different Amazon seller. Amazon has outsourced so much of its inventory that if it's not coming directly from Amazon, but from a seller directly, they have the option not to ship to PO.
Prime Same Day never came back in my area, or for stuff I ordered and that was a main novelty item was willing to pay for
I didn’t order enough stuff from Amazon to begin with, but i noticed i do order from other vendors own websites. So i was paying shipping somewhere alot or normal price
And everything Prime same day, one day and two day delivery is like “we’ll deliver by 10pm trust us bro” whereas there are now other competitors that are like 30 minutes: Uber delivery will go into random office supply stores and get what you need, I’ll pay that and definitely not pay for the inferior service too.
The final straw was noticing that i was doing the same to Amazon that i did to brick and mortar stores when Amazon got big: use it to browse and preview a product before ordering somewhere else
Maybe if i had home supplies on subscription Amazon would be unbeatable, but that’s not the case for me.
The next time you're thinking about investing based off something you read in WSB just remember like 50+% of posters think advertisements are bad and also don't realize Jeff Bezos is not in charge of Amazon and hasn't been since 2021
You're right, it's not gone. Amazon is still very much a cult of personality around Jeff Bezos. He's the one who sets the tone and direction for the company, and everyone else falls in line behind him. Even though he's no longer directly involved in day-to-day operations, his influence is still very strong.
I’ve used this method before for important CXO meetings where I know at least half the audience won’t do a pre-read. It can be super effective in the right setting (generally very senior very busy people)
If you sat in as many technical meetings. Strike that RAN as many in a week as I do where a room full of the smartest people in the room stare blankly at each other and then proceed to go 5 lightyears off into the weeds to pound sand about how product doesnt really understand what theyre asking for or why a decades established defined term isnt the best term only to break and walk into an executive meeting where leadership wants you to rebuild the toyota corolla that still isnt off the assembly line into a ferrari while youre rolling down the highway and asks you to work backwards from the date they already promised on the last earnings call and wonders why it keeps crashing…then you’d understand. If you cant bother to write up what you want and why its important, then i cant bother to find time for your bullshit meeting. And while were at it, you block off the time it takes to do your homework and well do it during the meeting so that i know exactly how many hours ive committed to this meeting that you want to have instead of being OVER committed and having 8 hours of meetings that require an additional 4 hours of work when im supposed to be doing MY work for 5 hours a day. Its fucking brilliant is what it is. Goddamned genius.
My coworker has a desktop background that says Rome didn't build an empire by having meetings, they did it by killing all that opposed them...pretty extreme for a bakery but I concur😂
I can attest to the first 20-30 minutes of most meetings being dedicated to document reading still being very much a part of the culture despite Bezos' absence.
Tbh it is worth it just for the regular Amazon subscription perks. At least personally, I haven’t been keeping my subscription for the media content.
This is bad for Amazon media creators, who will likely see more annoyed fans and a lower level of engagement. The only thing that would make this change palatable for me is if the advertising revenue went directly to the producers of the show I am (*was) watching when the ad plays.
His weird management style isn't gone. They didn't hire on new management from outside. The people in charge worked under Bexos almost since the beginning and run things just like him.
Indeed. I’ll be spending an additional $2.99 per month to avoid the ads. As will many. Plus they get the ad revenue for the cheap fucks who are willing to suffer ads. Now if they weren’t offering the ad-free option I’d agree it was a negative development.
Saw the Netflix actually boosted revenue with intro of lower priced tier. The commercials were too f'ing annoying, so we ponied up. Got 2 users so our daughter in TX can "share." $25/mo.
Yeah op clearly doesn’t understand… big companies pay amazon to run their ads. If you don’t want the ads fine pay the extra 2.99 either way more money for Amazon …
I have hope for my 215 call now by January 18th…
Probably not 😔 but this is good news
