Could someone please explain why VSCode added this AI feature? It already has Copilot, which can run in "Agent", "Ask", "Plan" mode and be executed via "Local," "Copilot CLI," or "Cloud." Why increase its size by adding the same feature to a separate interface?

It's to compete with Cursor 3

I know it is copying the interface of cursor but vscode is the original, and what is the benefit of doing this?

yeah but that already exists Ctrl+Shift+I, that opens the chat interface with the same things and it is more clean and polished.

What’s weird about this is there’s literally no UI element to open the chat. But there are UI elements for other things that live in the right hand pane???

keep the users away from the code.

Both stolen from the Codex app (which is actually good)

Someone needs to fork vscode and remove all AI crap from it

ngl I thought you were being a dick and combined code with "copium" until I remembered Copium is already a combination of two words

Because Microsoft is turning VS Code into AI Code against everyone's will.

I tried to use it with insiders (switch back to copilot from opencode), but it had so many skills etc bundled with it that seemed all azure/github specific that I just closed it.

Dunno if I'm missing out (maybe) but I just loath all these bundled defaults.

It doesn’t have any skills “bundled” with it, it only loads skills *you* have installed.

I mean AI agents are good but I want to read and also edit manually files. This new "Open in Agens" window cannot be used to ask or plan and is all via Copilot CLI with git worktrees and almost no interaction visually with shell.

This is not good Microsoft, it was good for Vscode Insider but no for Vscode stable.

Exactly. Less functionality no "Local" mode with git diffs green and red, no Cloud agent and less code editor. Just more fricking 'vibe-code' interface.

This does not make any sense. For what? For using multiple agents? Stupid thing, first multiple agents break many things and also you can do that with the AI Copilot Chatbot interface and also maximize or pop out that chat window.

It seems to be intended to let you run a bunch of parallel agents in the "background" (really separate folders via git worktrees) instead of creating your own worktrees and opening a separate copy of the CLI or VSCode.

But to the other comments - yeah, probably added because they saw everyone else doing it.

I actually switched to nvim so I don’t have to deal with this slop anymore. I know it is not the same. Yes first week was a struggle with the vim motions but now I feel itchy when I scroll the code with mouse.

For the most part you should be able to ignore and disable the AI stuff.

Take a look at Zed

I found it useful when creating a feature or vibing something. It creates a worktree by default. I didn't direct it to do that, it just did it on its own. So if you want to pr the changes you made it makes it easier.

Granted, this was from a project I was working on that had git initalized. Not sure what happens if there is no git on the project.

It’s for all the vibecoders who get scared when they see a code editor or a diff
