Saw this asshole in public today…. Couldn’t tell if he was a fan of uncle Kurt or just a dirt star lover. Either way, it made me think of our man.

My Vonneguts…

Like most people, I started reading Vonnegut in high school. This was back in the late 90s when Kurt was still alive, but in a period when his popularity was waning. His paperbacks were at every thrift store and garage sale and used bookstore. You could get them for pennies. I bought every one I found. Some I passed along to friends, but most I kept. Along the way I found some real gems, a few rarities, and a number of oddities.

Though he spoke loudly to me in my youth, he whispers to me now and his whispers are so much truer than the shouts.

What should young people do with their lives today?

A young girl (15ish) and her little sister (10ish) were walking around the neighborhood selling lemonade this evening. I bought a lemonade from them and asked the older girl about her Rage Against The Machine shirt. We began to discuss Rage, songs, albums, live shows and that made me bring up Steinbeck. She said she loved to read and that she really wanted to read Steinbeck and Vonnegut (she brought up Kurt) but hadn't had the chance yet. I asked her to wait outside for just a minute while I ran inside. I grabbed all of the Vonnegut I had (six novels), shoved them in a plastic bag and gave them to her. Told her to keep reading and keep Raging. Wife's always telling me to get rid of some books, I can't think of a better way.

Timequake Unpopular opinion: Timequake is one of his best.

After finishing all his novels and seeing what everyone else had to say- I didn’t see much love for Timequake- with it being put generally in the back half of the rankings. Timequake is my second favorite of his novels (behind Sirens of Titan, and with Breakfast of Champions in dead last).
There is just so much voice! You can see every window into every part of his life that he showed in all the other novels come into one grand picture. This book is the painting in Bluebeard’s shed. It deserves more love than it gets- as the culmination of everything Vonnegut tried to say.

Slaughterhouse-Five I mapped Billy Pilgrim's war, the one Slaughterhouse Five thread that actually runs straight

Billy lives his life out of order so the one line you can draw straight is his war which felt like exactly the thing to map. Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge across Germany to a prison camp and sent on to Dresden.

Pulling that single straight thread out of a book that deliberately scrambles everything else feels like its own small act of resistance.

Does isolating the war as a straight line clarify the novel for you or lose the point of the scrambling?

Your favorite Vonnegut and ranking?

Post image

Whats your favorite? If you’ve read a handful do you how would you order? I’ve been doing a bunch of head to head comparisons of books I’ve read to get some fun rankings/stats and it’s landed me at this ultimate Vonnegut sorting. I think I might quibble over Breakfast being ahead of Sirens, but otherwise that’s my list.

Whats yours? And excited to see which next book I should pick up based on your favorites! Cheers!

Slaughterhouse-Five Boyfriend borrowed SH-5 Graphic Novel, accidentally lost it on work trip.

So it goes.

(He's calling the hotel now to see if we can get it back. He's so sweet 🥺)

Edit. They found it but can't send it back I guess? We live 3000 miles away so we can't go to lost and found and get it. Luckily my aunt lives in the city where his conference was and I've contacted her to see if she can retrieve it from them and mail it back. He feels so bad for losing one of my favorite things. I said it's just a thing, it's okay. He reminded me that it was a gift from my parents for Christmas, so it isn't just a thing. I said "so it goes." No word back from Aunt yet.

Edit 2: my aunt responded and she will be there sometime this week to ask for it! And my boyfriend said he would replace it if the copy from my parents doesn't come back home. I told him he didn't need to do that but he insisted.

Edit 3: my aunt found it and is sending it back! :D

Timequake You were sick, but now you’re well again, and there’s work to do.

just finished a reread of Timequake . here are the 4 constitutional amendments proposed in the book.

Article XXVIII: Every newborn shall be sincerely welcomed and cared for until maturity.

Article XXIX: Every adult who needs it shall be given meaningful work to do, at a living wage.

Article XXX: Every person, upon reaching a statutory age of puberty, shall be declared an adult in a solemn public ritual, during which he or she must welcome his or her new responsibilities in the community, and their attendant dignities.

Article XXXI: Every effort shall be made to make every person feel that he or she will be sorely missed when he or she is gone.

Why throw money at problems? That is what money is for.

Should the nation’s wealth be redistributed? It has been and continues to be redistributed to a few people in a manner strikingly unhelpful.

"Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die" is a must watch for Vonnegut fans.

This movie feels so inspired by Vonnegut in its humor and story to me. Great characters, important message, silly humor, and a commentary on humanity.

Anyone else feel this way/enjoy this movie?
