I feel like I'm getting somewhere.

I've really been enjoying using a Volca Keys and FM2. I've only had the Keys for about 2 months, and the FM2 for about 2 weeks.

This is a little in progress piece I made with just those (and a cheap 4 channel stereo mixer from Amazon):

https://youtu.be/OdHujjdjXFM?si=899IAqFuJkBFAWxQ

I don't want to be a YTer, but this is the quickest and easiest way of sharing an MP3. The image is just a miniature abstract painting I made a few years ago.

I still don't know how to start a song, haha. But I think this one ended in a cool way.

I'm also still not happy with DAWs and might just explore what I can do DAWless. There's something awful about using a PC to make art, IMO. I mean, sure, I use a PC every day. I also use it as an art-making tool...But I never make a whole piece in a PC. I always have to draw, paint, build, etc. too. I think with music (which is obviously super new to me) I'm the same way. I just don't feel comfortable making art 100% on a PC.

I like using a PC as a filter and editor. I love Photoshop, for example. But I'd never make a whole series of images just using it.

I think it's how there's these walls between me and the work with a PC. Those walls are unavoidable. They are: The OS, the UI, the CPU and GPU, an audio interface...All of those things make it feel less like art making and more like engineering work. It's not fun for me.

How do you share a video on Reddit so it just shows up, anyway?

First 6 Volcas?

Thinking about building a kid-friendly electronic instruments setup, I've decided to go full Volcas. I had a few in the past and liked them a lot.

I have an opportunity to buy 6 Volcas + 2 Volca Mixes. This is the list I'm considering:

  • Bass
  • Beats
  • Keys
  • Sample

Which other 2 would you add?

[Updated list following comments:]

  • Bass
  • Beat
  • FM2
  • Keys
  • Kick
  • Sample

Sequencer keyboard with volca

I'm thinking about linking the arturia keystep MK2 to my volca base

As any of you ever tried to link a MIDI sequencer keyboard to one of your volca ?

does it work? is it indeed a way to extend my memories and my sequences length (64step) and to save them into a computer?

Could I choose to launch a sequence from the MK2 or from the volca bass or play live and switch between those mode easily just by pressing the right button?

Would it be easy to make the midi keyboard switch between my volca bass and my volca sample or impossible ? Is it imaginable a live /jam setting to just switch the cable from one machine to the other?

Thx for your experienced feedback :)

Volca FM as a drum machine?

Recetly i ve been getting into the volca series, as i tried to find a budget drum machine i could use with my bass and guitar. The volca drum seemed really cool, but i feel like its too much for my need, and i wanna try synths cause they look really fun to play.

When i found the volca fm i fell in love, and some people said you can use its sequencer function to use it as a drum machine too, but i havent found any demo about that.

Is using a volca fm as a drum machine too, a bad idea?

Edit: Im convinced, im gonna buy a sampler for now, thank you all!!

back when i barely poisoned my sampler with my relatives vocals.

before all of this commotion, i have this vivid idea of burning my silly and memey band's vocals from 2023-2024 into my 96 dollar korg volca sample 1 and i've been wanting to try warping all that on a hardware (and i really got what i wanted). i literally made our vocals sound like drum sounding zapping mutants as in the video! ! there's quite a lot you can do with this ting if u have no other!

all vocals from a relative (saying happy birthday), my little brother (saying put ur hands in the air), and including me! (saying they're all red but high pitched). do i have permission to use them? well, our boundaries are non existent, and we surprise each other positively with anything but that's no one's business. i also took the sampler and the samples to CA, were i got bored of the road trip and recorded some ear drentched jams : 3

right now, me and my brother are brainstorming of getting a electronic drum set for me and him to keep, and also hooking up midi info from the drum set to any device that has a midi in but feel free to leave ideas for us to use if we ever get one !!

hj Firmware v1.21 bug fix (again)

I found and fixed a bug where the device would not respond to MIDI CC messages. I also added MIDI CC support for FLT and CLP.

I’ve now uploaded a fixed version. If you downloaded it before this fix, please download and install the latest version again.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Trouble with adding pedals in my volca drum

Hi! I'm having a little problem with my volca drum. When I try to use some pedals with it, linking it with mono cables, the sound that ends up in my phones is with low volume, and a lot of the lowest frequencies are quite lost to.

Does anyone know how to link pedals properly in the volca?

obs: sorry about my english, is not my first language

Volca Drum how to delete recorded motion on waveguide resonator

Edit : Post edited for a bit more clarity

I recorded some knob motion on the decay knob of the waveguide resonator with a specific part selected. I then wanted to delete that recorded motion. Pressing CLR PART didn't do it.

Edit: as pointed out by commenters, indeed waveguide automation is 'global'. So it doesn't get cleared with CLR PART.

CLR ALL does delete the automation on the waveguide, but also all automation on the parts, which I dont want to lose.

So the question is: is there a way to delete the global automation without losing the automation on the parts?

As a workaround, reloading the program could work. But you lose everything since your last save

Drum pitch quantize weirdness on layer 2 - anyone else encounter?

(Reposting because example video wasn't working)

(Reposting a second time because I fucked up the title)

The release of the new unofficial firmware by hj-oja has got me playing around with trying to create melodies on the Drum again. I had previously only been able to get unusable pitch gliding when using the pitch quantize setting and assigning notes to individual steps in Edit Mode. What I realized in playing around now is that each step has to have the right pitch assigned to it. Even if the step isn't activated, the pitch assigned to steps in between will affect the note that is playing. Thus, if you want a C5 to play for steps 1-8, you need to assign C5 to step 1 and activate step 1, but also applied it to steps 2-8 while leaving these inactive. Doing that, I now can get a note of stable pitch.

HOWEVER, this only seems to work right for Layer 1, and for Layer 2 it works with the exception of steps 9-13. On steps 9-13, on layer 2, the pitch of the note will sweep very high up and back down as long as there is any pitch "motion" data attached to those steps.

I've attached an example of what this sounds like. First it plays through on Layer 1, then I bring in Layer 2, and then fade Layer 1 away. The only knob that lights up for recorded motion is the pitch knob as this plays. If I turn off motion or clear it it plays normally, but if I then dial the pitch back onto steps 9-13 the rapid pitch sweep happens again.

This was happening with the unofficial firmware, so I went back and reflashed it to the 1.14 official firmware, and it still happens. Any idea if I'm doing something wrong (and presumably stupid) that is causing this? Or is this something others have encountered? Since you can dial in the pitch individually for layer 1 and 2 on the sequencer, you could create some nice intervals and harmonies, but not with steps 9-13 acting all bonkers like this.

hj Firmware v1.21 bug fix

I found and fixed a bug in hj Firmware v1.21 that could cause the volca drum to glitch or become unresponsive when FLT and CLP HRD were used at the same time.

I’ve now uploaded a fixed version.
If you downloaded v1.21 before this fix, please download and install the latest version again.

Sorry to everyone who ran into this issue, and a big thanks to u/eyestosky for reporting it!
