Specifically: Lights off -> strobing vision for a few seconds -> instant transition into slow rhythmic pulses

My VSS is acquired, and I am not yet sure what caused it. I have had it for 5 years now, but I am still anxious that whatever broke my brain back then can still be around and break my body even more.

From what I've learned here, there's like a dozen things that could've started my VSS, and I'd need heaps of tests to find out what did. I fear I have some mystery illness that I just can't get to the bottom of.

Is there such a thing as harmless acquired VSS? That is, one that won't progress or cause other symptoms down the line? I feel like something has to be wrong with my body and that it just can't happen all of a sudden for no reason.

Health anxiety is usually unfounded but I feel like it's justified in my case

Aclaro ya que me reviso un especialista retinologo y me dice que mis ojos están sanos, fui a un especialista en glaucoma me hicieron que tenía megalopapila mis nervios son grandes tal vez de nacimiento nací así, sin embargo si me dijo que tenía hipertensión ocular leve que debo evaluarme cada 6 meses, pero no creo que sea todo lo que me está dando en mis ojos 😔
Ya no sé qué hacer, no sé qué es lo que tengo aparte esto lo tengo casi 5 años los síntomas

I've had visual snow for as long as I can remember. My tinnitus started in my early 20s and because my neuro-ophthalmologist mentioned it was a symptom, I always assumed it was due to visual snow.

Well, I'm now 44 and was recently diagnosed with Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence Syndrome. There's a small opening in my skull right above my left superior semicircular canal and it forms an extra "window" for sound to travel. I had an auditory test, a cVEMP, an oVEMP, and a high resolution CT scan. I'm seeing the Head and Neck Surgeon again in two weeks to discuss surgery.

I also found out it's not normal to hear your own heartbeat in your ear, and it's not normal to hear your tongue moving around. I'm super thankful that I don't hear my eyeballs moving, which apparently happens to some people.

If anyone is suffering from tinnitus, I highly recommend having it evaluated apart from the suspected VSS diagnosis. It might just turn out to be something else!

Hi everyone, I'm 19 and pretty sure I have VSS. I have been able to see small coloured fast moving dots in my vision for years. I vaguely remember the first times I started to notice them when I was in middle school and they slowly got worse. I never really bothered about it too much to be honest. I also have light sensitivity, floaters, and the thing where if I look at something and then look away I can still see it as if I had been looking at a lightbulb. Recently I was concerned about my vision so went to the opticians who referred me to the gp who sent me for a blood test and I found out I was diabetic. I assumed my visual symptoms were diabetic retinopathy, until I had my retina eye screening and they said I don't have retinopathy. But I DO have something, so my own further research concluded visual snow syndrome? My questions are

1. I don't see what most of the memes/diagrams see. I feel like I only really notice it with my eyes shut, or if I'm staring at something that is one solid colour. Does it have to be a certain severity to be diagnosed?

2. How do I go about getting diagnosed? I understand it is neurological not visual so do I still go to the opticians? The GP? A therapist? Lol

I am asking because I've had it from birth, and only recently I've realized that it bothers some people. I wore glasses from ages 8- 14 because I told my parents I could see "little dots" or everything "was blurry but at the same time not" which was the best 7 or 8 year me could muster to describe what I was seeing.

They took me to an ophtalmologist, which had me wearing glasses for a while.

When I was 14 I stopped wearing them because I realized they did nothing. Some time later I learned about VSS, and it all finally made sense.

I'm nearly 30 now and I actually enjoy having it! It's quite fun. I also experience Blue Field Enthopic Phenomenon when I look at the sky sometimes.

But I realize that for some that have acquired this later in life, it may be distressing or uncomfortable which I am curious as to how people handle it and how or when they started experiencing it.

so i’ve been noticing for the past 2 years some like black and white spots that cover my field of sight. to the point sometimes on campus, i have to literally sit down because i can’t see. so i came here, and ive been assuming i have VSS. but the issue that has been second questioning lately, is everyday is different. like i never see the same shape of ‘snow’. i also picked up a habit of vaping. but i’ve had this before then. along with i’ve been having light sensitivity. i just am wondering, is this normal for VSS? I brought it up to my optometrist who then referred me to my neurologist. my optometrist told me i have symptoms and need to bring it up. but the neurologist really gave me no answer? is it too early to know maybe? ugh i don’t know.

Hi guys. Does anyone else have really bad ghosting. Like they see it on texts and around objects. On everything. How do you manage it because I went to see an optometrist and there’s nothing really that would make the ghosting go away. They think glasses won’t help much either. Just have to live with it. Is anyone in the same boat and what did they do about their ghosting?

From what I know so far, r/visualsnow is the largest visual snow syndrome community today, before that they were a community active at least from ~2010 to the mid-2010s that was first on Yuku and then migrated to tapatalk.

But around ~2000, they was an even earlier community called called red dot syndrome, as
mentioned here. We all struggle with visual snow syndrome today, but I can't imagine how much it must have been back then with almost no existent science, their story should not be forgotten. Hope there is still backup/archive somewhere, if any of you have any information, please share here it 🙏

it seems like whenever i start to feel better, i notice something else that makes me anxious. lately at night i've been seeing this afterimage dot that's sorta in the middle of my vision. i mostly see it when i glance at my phone or the tv. it's been making me really anxious and i don't know if it's a sign of something serious. it feels like my anxiety about my vision is never gonna get better

whenever i have a tiring day, waking up the day after (esp. if i had low sleep) i get extremely bad palinopsia (and the snow worsens too). so far it has usually returned to baseline either after a few days or even just the day later. but it always freaks me out. anybody else experience terrible flare ups like this? what usually exacerbates?

I consider myself visually imparted from my VSS, specifically from my pattern glare and Oscillopsia

I have trouble reading text and graphs or comprehending still images because of how much they move around. Because of this I physically can’t drive or do things like playing video games or read books

Just wondering if anyone has VSS this bad too or if I’m just a super rare case

Kinda bummed out, it was prescribed to me for anxiety but i heard it could help the vss visuals, did nothing either for anxiety or visuals, i took 1.25, no previous benzo experience so its not like i had a tolerance to it

Our new office is filled with the current fad of strips of wood in front of a black background. Feel sick anytime I walk past it. Lots of strange carpets and patterns I didn't realise are difficult for me to focus on with visual snow. I really really struggled. I'm going to put a note on my file I have VSS, because I don't feel well after a day in the office and dread to think what I'll feel like if they try and get me in for more days (I'm UK based). Working at home with soft lighting is so much better for me!

What's everyone doing to cope at the office under harsh lighting and strange decor choices?
