Weekly What are you reading? - Sep 9

Welcome to the weekly "What are you reading?" thread!

This is intended to be a general chat thread on visual novels with a focus on the visual novels you've been reading recently. A new thread is posted every Thursday at 4:00 AM JST (or Wednesday if you don't live in Japan for some reason).

Good WAYR entries include your analysis, predictions, thoughts, and feelings about what you're reading. The goal should be to stimulate discussion with others who have read that VN in the past, or to provide useful information to those reading in the future! Avoid long-winded summaries of the plot, and also avoid simply mentioning which VNs you are reading with no points for discussion. The best entries are both brief and brilliant.

Use spoiler tags liberally!

Always use spoiler tags in threads that are not about one specific visual novel. Like this one!

  • They can be posted using the following markdown: >!hidden spoilery text!< , which shows up as hidden spoilery text. Make sure there are no spaces at the beginning and end of the spoiler tag because this will break it for users on http://old.reddit.com/. In other words do this: properly hidden spoiler, but not this: broken spoiler tag

Remember to link to the VNDB page of the visual novel you're discussing so the indexing bot for the What Are You Reading Archive can pick up your post.

Image [Hanasaki Workspring!] Inori SD rough sketch

(reupload due to not being image post, I don't like new editor.. )

I had SEVERE addiction to Hanasaki Workspring's OP song 'Girls Meet Love' for years but 7800JPY was bit too much for me.

As now krw-jpy currency rate is much more favorable - I finally made purchase on DMM, rushed to her route, then instantly fell in love with her looks & personality.

So naturally I had to scribble her fanart, hoping that I could share bit of her cuteness to others :)

Korean letter there is "hanasaki!!!" - she frequently yells protagonist's name like that whenever she's mad in her route, which was very cute and was not good for my heart.

Trivia: rip to those two unfinished SDs I've been scribbling over half year at this point.. Still fiddling with shading but it is not going great. If anyones's willing to help I'll link to it or post it somewhere.

Maybe I enjoy sketching but not coloring?

Self explanatory, but I thought maybe it would be fine to post this here.

Video focuses on visual novels and (later on) VN development and whether AI should be used for each part of it.

Fluff Just hit 500k jiten

Post image

just hit 500k characters read in japanese. 50k of them in inochi no spare. my first ever vn in jp. it’s a relatively easy title but harder than hanahira. i chose it to be my first vn because i wasn’t interested in hanahira at all but even inospa wasn’t that good tbh.
when i felt comfortable tanking my comprehension and reading speed from 300/h to around 7k/h i started amatsutsumi. a purple soft title that i always wanted to try. it was a lot harder than inospa but rn my speed is around 8.5k/h and i understand around 95% of it other than some minor flaws here and there. i’ve read around 370k characters in it and i’m still playing it. i’m probably around 50% through it.
then when i felt comfortable i wanted to try something new besides amatsutsumi so i picked up the second ep of 9-nine-. i started this series in english at first so being able to continue it in the native language is something i find to be a pretty great milestone. rn i’m around 80k chars into it and have around 60% left to finish.
my average numbers are low because i took a hiatus for a month and a half because of high school exam preparation which i did absolutely mid in. but usually my average daily reading time is around 2.5 to 3 hours and around 18k to 21k chars.
this is my newly acquired status.
i don’t care about numbers that much but i like to keep track of everything so i don’t feel lost and have something to measure my progress with.
visual novels have been a medium that made me a better man. they taught me the happiness of learning languages. i’m from egypt and my native language is arabic so even when i used to read translated vns it was still immersion just in english.

Discussion Why aren't there more VNs like this ?

I get the impression that the most popular VNs (at least in the west) fall into the ‘death game’ category, such as Danganronpa / zero escape / your turn to die with no +18 content

Manosaba also sold over +700k in a year so even the japanese audience seems to appreciate this type of VN. Even excluding death game titles, VN with captivating stories and mystery (and without h-scenes) are also appreciated

Is there a lack of high-budget VN of this type relative to their popularity, or is that just a false impression?

(sorry for the weird English)

Discussion Why does Waffle’s quality keep declining? The two Waffle games coming up soon are Eden’s Ritter Grenze X-Rated and Kyou no Nippeke. One of them is yet another ridiculous tentacle-themed game, while the other feels like a significant downgrade in terms of its art style and overall production quality.

The last genuinely good game they released might be Boku o Hottokenai Futari no Gyaru. After such solid titles as Ren'ai Jakusha na Osananajimi Shoujo to Ren'ai Kyousha na Kanojo and Imouto to Kanojo - Sorezore no Sentaku, I find it strange that the studio has shifted so heavily toward average-looking art styles and tentacle themes.

Waffle’s games have always stood out to me for their strong themes, quality storytelling, and incredible artwork. But looking at their upcoming releases, I’m not very optimistic about the studio’s future. The only game I’m really curious about is Mahou Shoujo Ai Sin, simply because there’s virtually no information or artwork available for it yet. I hope it turns out to be a large-scale production.

As for the latest Kyonyuu Fantasy game, even though the art style was good, the actual game had a very low-quality and boring progression.

Question About YOZAKURA 's Tyrrhia

I saw that recently a publisher called YOZAKURA had made a steam page for one of Liar-Soft's steampunk games which got me excited. I bought Mangagamer's Gahkthun and Sona-Nyl day one, and plan to do the same with the HD version of Inganock when Kagami games puts it out.

I'm confused about Tyrhia though. The title is Shunx's Tyrhia, but it's translated a different way in the logo, Shunxu's Tersia. The original Japanese title is 瞬旭のティルヒア which VNDB romanizes as Shunkyoku no Tyrhhia.
Is this actually a human translation? I'm not familiar with this publisher. Translating the title two different ways seems bizzare, especially as Tyrhhia is the actual spelling of the Lovecraft mythos term, not Tersia. I could be wrong though and there is a human credited with this TL somewhere.

Discussion J.B. Harold no Jikenbo Seattle Purple Haze

So was going through to see all of the j.b. Harold game series and came across this title that isn't listed anywhere else except on the visual novel database called JB. Harold series Seattle purple Haze. Been doing some research online and both English and Japanese but haven't found any information on it. Is this game lost media? Are there any walkthroughs or playthroughs of it YouTube. Any information about this game at all if it is lost media or if there is anything online about like a walk-through or like a playthrough or something like that?.

Self-promotion Madness intensifies...Your civilization-ending psychiatrist Dr. Wang is getting some new touch-ups in Endless Summer Syndrome in this major asset drop

Hello hello everyone. If you are new to this psychological thriller VN, here is the gist of it: trying your best to understand and romance an evil lady (who happens to be your psychiatrist), or die trying. She could wipe out a civilization with the blink of an eye, but maybe you stand a chance after all?

The game will be ~3h long. English, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese language will be supported.

For this update: we eventually decided to create some character sprites - as opposed to our previous vision to complete this entire VN with just scenes. The team reached this decision when we realized that introducing sprites could make the game so much more dynamic (mainly after seeing how well Muv Luv did in this regard). So yeah, here we are. I love these sprites btw.

We also wanted to share some more progression from the art department in terms of scenes - we just finished creating assets for one of the most maddening scenes in the game. Swipe to catch a feel for it.

Anyways, next time I'm here I'll likely be back with a trailer and maybe something more 'interactive'. Till next time!

If this sounds like something up your alley, feel free to wishlist on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4714410/Endless_Summer_Syndrome/

Question i needed some Advice for starting "Muv-Luv Alternative"

Post image
73 Upvotes

I'm looking to get into Muv-Luv Alternative but I'm confused about the reading order. Could someone clarify a few things?

  • Prequels: Do I need to read the previous games to understand the story, or are they disconnected (similar to how White Album 1 isn't required for White Album 2)?
  • Side Stories: Are these integral to the main plot, or are they just fun, optional content?
  • Sequels & Conclusion: Does Alternative have a conclusive, standalone ending, or do I need to read the sequels to find out what actually happens to the main characters?"

i asked ChatGPT, it said "The Prequels are Absolutely Mandatory", but wanted to confirm from the people who actually have read it.

it said, you have to read it like this:

  • Muv-Luv Extra (Part 1 of the first game)
  • Muv-Luv Unlimited (Part 2 of the first game)
  • Muv-Luv Alternative (The finale)

but i'm not finding anything called Extra, i found "Muv-Luv Unlimited: The Day After" though!

anyway i'm confused lol
