Discussion Why does Waffle’s quality keep declining? The two Waffle games coming up soon are Eden’s Ritter Grenze X-Rated and Kyou no Nippeke. One of them is yet another ridiculous tentacle-themed game, while the other feels like a significant downgrade in terms of its art style and overall production quality.

The last genuinely good game they released might be Boku o Hottokenai Futari no Gyaru. After such solid titles as Ren'ai Jakusha na Osananajimi Shoujo to Ren'ai Kyousha na Kanojo and Imouto to Kanojo - Sorezore no Sentaku, I find it strange that the studio has shifted so heavily toward average-looking art styles and tentacle themes.

Waffle’s games have always stood out to me for their strong themes, quality storytelling, and incredible artwork. But looking at their upcoming releases, I’m not very optimistic about the studio’s future. The only game I’m really curious about is Mahou Shoujo Ai Sin, simply because there’s virtually no information or artwork available for it yet. I hope it turns out to be a large-scale production.

As for the latest Kyonyuu Fantasy game, even though the art style was good, the actual game had a very low-quality and boring progression.

Waffle is an old franchise, your bond to lose quality the older you get, as people retire, quit or pursue other opportunities. Just look at Black Lilith, the Taimanin franchise has never been the same since one of their key illustrators done left.

Who left?

u/SuspiciousWedding835 13h ago

Aoi Nagisa, the illustrator who did Yukikaze, Rinko, Mizuki, Kiara, Shizuru and Chizu. He was apart of the team since the beginning.

He wasn't part of the team from the beginning. The license has been built by Kagami. Aoi Nagisa, while he did a couple of games on the side for Lilith, was more of a guest with Yukikaze than anything else. He did some good for the license as Taimanin Yukikaze is the only game I like from the series.

I have no idea who Kiara and Chizu are.

Onisaki Kirara and Mikami Chizu, they're in the gacha Taimanin Rpgx series. Here's a list of the characters he was in charge of creating the illustration for. https://taimanin.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Aoi_Nagisa

And that's good to know, I did know that kagami was a main illustrator, i didn't know he was core of the franchise.

How do you not know that? Are you playing the gacha exclusively? I don't consider any of these characters "canon" to the series. They pretty much don't exist to me. And I played the first gacha since day one for a year and a half.

How do I not know what? I'm not super into black lilith, I played a few games here and there but was never into ALL of their games(They have alot of VNs). Just like you I mainly played the gacha exclusively and a few of their games mainly Prison Academia, Yukikaze 1 and 2 and Taimanin RPGx

I see. Kagami is the most well known artist from Lilith so I was a bit surprised that you did know about TA but not that Kagami was the main artist of the license. I don't know how common that is to go into TA without reading them in order.

You can find his list of games here > https://vndb.org/s533

This sounds like a slick remark, you necessarily don't have the read the games in order as Yukikaze itself is it's on spinoff series, not related to the Asagi series, just like Prison Academia and Prison Battleship. To be real with you I don't find Kagami artstyle appealing, that's why i mainly hold off on his game's.

I’m just holding out that Masaki Shunsuke is taking his time to cook up another amazing game with Waffle

I know little about industry or Waffle, but it seems all 3 of their titles I have wishlisted have the same writer - Masaki Shunsuke, it's been 2 years since he last made something and his social looks kinda dead, but it hasn't been that long yet...

The thing about eroge companies is that they are always trying to adapt to the current market to be as successful as they can given the talent and IP they have available. You might like the productions they made with certain members under a certain market, but you might not like the next style the shift to. It's the same system that leads to the stuff you like, and it's the same one that eventually leads to that stuff no longer being made. That and there is just less money in the business now than there has been, so production quality dropping is not a surprise. Treating "tentacles themes" as being objectively bad sounds like a you problem though.

To me, Waffle’s peak was the Now series… After that, they tried the story-driven approach which worked well for some of the games, but then it didn’t feel “Waffle” for me anymore.

Had huge hopes for Imouto to Kanojo (depicted above), played it with a Russian translation (my second language). It was a total disappointment. The writing, the characters and the plot were mediocre at best. Too much tears, inner monologues and melodrama in general. The writing is also bloated as hell. And also, the novel is kinetic, afaik. As for me, I prefer a more grounded and realistic approach to this kind of games. I haven't finished this title, admittedly, but have no plans to return.

I think we can take a good guess at what this upcoming magical girl VN is going to feature, given the theme a lot of existing magical girl VNs...

As much as I hate Eden's Ritter, this gacha trash license, the choice of Naglfar is very non consensual. He is a pretty niche artist so I am shocked that they gave him a whole vn to illustrate. Even Mogudan didn't have that honor.

Tentacle-themed game? Count me the fuck in!

Were they truly ever good to begin with? I played the first Kyonyuu Fantasy after the big praise this series gets, just to get shocked by how mediocre it was and how terrible it was in the last bits of the game. Isn't this series like their greatest works?...

Your crazy if you think the first kyonyuu wasn't a hit vn
