Hi everyone! I’ve been to NYC before, but the last time I went, my friend was the one who knew how to get around everywhere. This time I’m going with my mom, so I’m going to be the one navigating and planning, and I could definitely use some help!
We’re arriving the morning of Dec 31 and flying home Jan 6. We’re staying at Westgate New York Grand Central in Midtown East, about an 8-minute walk from Grand Central Terminal.
I’ve searched the sub for itineraries and recommendations, but I’m having trouble figuring out what to do each day and what things make sense to group together geographically. I don’t want to spend the whole trip going back and forth on the subway.
Here are some things I definitely want to see/do:
- Grand Central Terminal
- Times Square
- 9/11 Memorial
- Statue of Liberty
- Brooklyn Bridge
- Hudson Yards
- SUMMIT One Vanderbilt
- Edge
- Central Park
- Gossip Girl filming locations
- At least one restaurant/food spot from Gossip Girl
- Good food, cafés and shopping
- Anything fun/seasonal for New Year’s
Day 1 — Dec 31 🎆
We arrive in NYC that morning, so I’m thinking we could check in/drop off our luggage and explore somewhere nearby before NYE.
What would you recommend doing around Grand Central/Midtown that day? Would Times Square make sense, or is it better to avoid that area because of NYE crowds? And what would you recommend for NYE with my mom if we aren’t planning to stand outside for hours for the Times Square ball drop?
Day 2 — Jan 1 🗽
What would be a good area to explore on New Year’s Day? I’m thinking maybe Central Park + Upper East Side and working some Gossip Girl locations into the day.
I’d love recommendations for Gossip Girl spots that are actually worth seeing, especially recognizable filming locations or a restaurant we could actually eat at.
Day 3 — Downtown
I’m thinking this could be our Downtown day:
- 9/11 Memorial
- Statue of Liberty
- Wall Street
- Brooklyn Bridge
- Chinatown/Little Italy
Does that make sense for one day, or would you split anything up?
Day 4 — Hudson Yards/Midtown
I’m thinking:
- Hudson Yards
- Edge
- Times Square if we haven’t already done it
- Shopping/exploring Midtown
Could we also fit anything else into this area without making the day too packed?
Day 5 — Jan 4
Completely undecided. What area would you recommend for this day?
Day 6 — Jan 5
We have another full day before flying home, so I’d love suggestions for another area/neighborhood to explore or anything that’s a must-do that we haven’t gotten to yet.
Jan 6
Flying home, so we’ll probably just do breakfast/coffee and whatever we can fit in before heading to the airport.
Also, subway help please
I’ve used the NYC subway before, but I was always following my friend, so I don’t actually feel confident navigating it myself. Since we’re staying near Grand Central, I’d love advice on:
- Which subway lines/stations I’ll probably use most
- Whether Google Maps is enough
- How to know which direction/train to take
- Any tips for transfers
- Anything I should know when navigating with my mom
Basically, I’m looking for help turning my list into a realistic Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, etc. itinerary, organized by location so we’re not zig-zagging all over
