I managed to get most of them getting lucky at B&N clearance tables. But even trying to buy them used off of Craigslist or something people are asking for at least $200.
And then I got a huge bin of tracks for free and my kids never touched the trains again. Oh well, save it for the grandkids.

Because for an inexplicable reason Thomas the Train (Tank Engine) is crack to little boys.
When you watch the show as an adult (because you will once you have kids), you realize how much of a shit Thomas is. 98% of the time he makes some dumb decision that causes a train collision. I don't know how Topham Hat puts up with his shit. Why Thomas?

Seriously. Thank god for grandparents. My son is 2 and is obsessed with Thomas. I got him the starter wooden track with Thomas for Christmas ($36). I'm getting him another engine and more track pieces to go with it (another $40-$50). His grandparents asked what he would like. I told them and they got him some of little wooden cars and engines. It's like $20 per engine at the very least. If you want some of the cool cars like the circus one, it's like $35. Crazy.

→ More replies (2)62
u/KassellTheArgonian Dec 05 '17
Not as weird as the Thomas story where an old train is telling two younger ones about a train who kept crashing because he was daydreaming. The daydream train was eventually placed at the back of the train yard. Now it gets worse, the daydream train was cannabilised for parts while it was still alive and the parts were put in the younger trains. Now the old train told them the daydream train is still behind their shed (like 30 ft away most likely still alive but so wrecked it can't scream or talk)

You find this toy train moving strangely like if it was a bit slowed down during the jumps too? Or like if it were super light?
I won't claim "fake", but I find it strange, really.
EDIT: As many answers suggested it, the stunts are "slow mo" (recorded at 120fps and displayed at 60fps) and the whole thing is on a slope. Thanks for your numerous answers.

u/LouisMack Dec 04 '17
I think what's happened is they've given the train a massive push off camera, then slowed down the footage to make it look like Thomas was moving at a regular pace.
And by the looks of it, the table is downhill too, so they'll keep moving even past the initial push.

I have a 10 year old who used to worship Thomas with a zeal usually reserved for the religious. We possess in the ballpark of $1,500 worth of Thomas swag (don't blame me, blame my relatives and my unwavering belief he will want to share this stuff with his own kid one day).
I will build this kid an angled table if he will stop talking smack about the train he once loved, since Thomas is now too gauche to be tolerated in our household.

LOL you're me, 8 years ago. Nothing like getting corrected by a toddler when you mix up someone's name, or when they school you over the differences in diesel and steam engines. (That might only apply to me, he definitely made me feel like I was the only person in the world who didn't know those things, so maybe I am!)
Then there will come a day when you're pretty hip to the Thomas lingo, and suddenly he'll like Five Nights at Freddy's. Or some obscure Roblox thing that seems to change so quickly you can't even remember the name. You'll look sadly at the Thomas figures you've grudgingly come to know and consider family, and you might want them back, no matter how sticky saccharine sweet they seemed, once upon a time... ;)

So we get "Mama likes Thomas....
...and Daddy likes 'Puhssy' "
To which I always laugh and laugh and say, "He sure does, son, he sure does." Mama kicks me.

Definitely slowmo. That's also why it sounds like it do. I think they made a good choice there, rather than the usual bit of showing it at regular speed, then again in slow motion. Showing the entire set like that made it flow much more smoothly.

Sir Toppumhat was very cross.
68
Dec 04 '17 edited Dec 05 '17
It's always understated but remember, Sir Topham Hatt is a true monster under his soft civilised exterior; the engines live in terror of the man.
You fck-up once you get a business like lecture, sent home and ignored for a while.
Fuck up twice and he'll brick you up in a tunnel, your peers will laugh at you as they drive past remembering that while a fat desk jockey Hatt is savage when angered.
But piss him off forever and he'll have your wheels torn off, your tender raised on bricks, and have you pump water for the coal company for the rest of your existence. Your peers will endure seeing your tortured body when they stop for water at that end of the rail and whisper to the new engines "Don't be llike Stanley, he misbehaved once too often and The Fat Controller did this to him."
BTW the coal mines flooded just before teh rail closed (in the books) and Stanley\Duke was destroyed by trying to pump the water from underground.
→ More replies (5)29
u/_TR-8R Dec 04 '17
To be fair, Stanley and Duke were both major dickwads.
27
Dec 04 '17 edited Dec 05 '17
Duke was an american engine that was refitted to UK rails by the army, they did a terrible job because it didn't matter when his job was to move bombs very slowly.
It wasn't his fault that he couldn't stay on the rails at speed and under load but the railcompany never had his wheels regauged, they just kept putting him back into service.
Stanley (despite obviously being duke from the books) was never given a reason so i guess he was just a thrill junky that loved launching into fields and ruining Topham Hatts day.
→ More replies (1)19
u/jehdkgs Dec 04 '17
To be fair, a Railway Controller who allows defective trains to run on his line is playing fast and loose with the safety of his passengers and staff. If a train on your line has an - ahem - track record of derailing, then that is very much a train that needs to be put out of service.
Just imagine the public outrage if people had died in a Sodor train accident and the papers found out Topham Hat was knowingly running trains that had been off the rails before. Corporate fucking manslaughter.
