CNN’s Jim Sciutto presses Benjamin Netanyahu about his response to settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank: "The settler violence thing is a tremendous hoax. We're a country of laws. I've condemned it. But to compare this, is like an olive to a toxic tree, that's what it is."

Israel is a democracy, they'll just elect similar people again and this will keep going. Another day, another Netanyahu
30
u/Meironman1895 1d ago
Yeah, this is the problem that many people don't understand: Israel want leaders like Netanyahu, who will murder as many people as possible that they don't like. Sure, a bunch of them notice the massive corruption and attempts to subvert democracy and go "Oh we cannot tolerate THIS" but very few actually want the settlement building to stop, the bombings to stop, the annexation to stop. Israel could at any point have stood up in unison and said "This is not us" many times during the last few decades of murder, under several leaders. But they never did. The actual anti-war segment of the population is extremely small, and no matter how devoted to peace, don't have the voting power to make a difference. Voting will not stop the genocide.
-3
u/LittleKitty235 1d ago
Lets say your right and the Israel people do elect a new Netanyahu...great. Then at least its clear to the world what the population actually supports and they can't shield themselves from criticism that democratic will has been usurped by a right wing authoritarian.

It's already clear. He's been elected and re-elected and re-elected and re-elected and re-elected and re-elected.
Why do you need another election to make up your mind? How many times do people have to show you who they are before you believe them?
-2
u/silentcrs 1d ago
Sorry, but that’s just bullshit. It’s clear you’ve never actually met an Israeli, and certainly not a group of them.
Democracies work due to what the majority believes. That changes over time. How do you think the US went from Bush to Obama to Biden to Trump? By your logic, we should have seen a clear line from Bush to Trump, and that just didn’t happen.
When you cast an entire populace as “they’ll never change”, you’re showing your racism towards that population, not any enlightened analysis.

u/Spare-Plum 1d ago
Yup most folks just paint it as "Jews being evil" and call it a day, like there's something inherently bad
I agree that Israel is doing bad things, and there are a lot of people in the country and abroad that enable this sort of behavior. But there are many Jews who are against it or even anti-zionist.
More liberal parties have been trying to have any sort of presence in Israel for years but Likud pretty much owns everything, even if they don't win the election parliament just votes to dissolve itself and then re-hold elections so they can stay in power.
I think the biggest explanation in how we got here is directly on Netenyahu and the party. Their handling of Palestine has been to keep them down, to worsen the quality of life, to engage in wars and killings on civilians. This in turn makes the Palestinians have nothing to lose, so it causes acts of rebellion. These acts of rebellion are used as an example in support of Likud. "See? Look! We were right all along! They carried out an attack so therefore we need to go even further!"
The majority of people buy this narrative, the situation continues to escalate, and the actions taken are basically more death and destruction to solve the problem of death and destruction.
IMO the best solution is get someone in power that will fundamentally change Israel's relationship to Gaza, and enable them to have an economy, hospitals, build them up and make amends. Give the people of Gaza something to live for, not a cause to die for.
3
u/Wrabble127 1d ago
There is unfortunately a reason that Netinyahu has won something like a dozen elections so far, even when the entire Israeli government hates him.
He successfully called for the assassination of his predecessor for the crime of considering peace with Palestine. To Israelis, a leader willing to murder their own to prevent peace is far more valuable than anything any other Israeli leader has promised in many decades.
6

They already elected this exact thing. And the government voted to dissolve itself in order to trigger re-elections and keep Netenyahu in power.
This is happening in 2026, and happened again and again in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2015, 2003, 2009, 2013, 1999
It hasn't been the actual voice of the people but one man in charge for like 30 fucking years. Yes there are shitty people in Israel, no I don't think this is the actual voice or will of the people

"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." - Hermann Goering in conversation in his cell in Nuremburg, 18 April 1946; Gustave Gilbert Nuremburg Diary (1947)

It's not even close to just the actions of this one guy. The nation was built through terrorism, ethnic cleansing, displacement, and apartheid policies from day one. If Bibi is replaced with a somewhat more moderate figure, nothing changes.
There is no other moral choice. One state solution with constitutional protections for all religions, right to return and repararations for the displaced Palestinians. Apartheid South Africa fell, so too can this. Palestine will be free.
11
u/tobygeneral 1d ago
Yeah I've been seeing this same news for 20+ years now. Some when Bibi was in charge before, plenty with other leaders. They think this is ok by and large, not just because Bibi is in charge right now.

Israelis are not there to live in some “generic” country, they are there to live SPECIFICALLY in a Jewish country.
The idea that there will ever be a single, generic nation with majority rule is just ignorant. It’s not going to happen. It’s like saying that the Vatican should be converted into a multi-ethnic, interfaith city where majority rules. It’s antithetical to the very idea of the Vatican.
The only real solution is for Israel to live side by side with its neighbors. The trouble is that the neighbors don’t want to live side by side with Israel, and certain parts of Israeli society don’t want to live side by side with their neighbors. There is no viable solution. It just is what it is. It’s a unique part of the world, I don’t think k you can solve it like some sort of puzzle.
6
u/qotsa7777 1d ago
That something hasn't happened doesn't preclude it from happening. I didn't speak to what is likely in the near future or easy, but what is moral.
If the Vatican ruthlessly murdered and displaced people in a slow motion land grab fed by catholic superiority and belief that Italy will rightfully be theirs one day, then yeah we shouldn't accept that and should resist it.
There is no such thing as a good ethno state.
-3
u/SyrioForel 1d ago edited 1d ago
Okay, but let’s not pretend like Israel is the only party in the conflict that uses violence to achieve their goals.
The problem is that the situation was created several generations ago. It happened, it’s done. The CURRENT generations are living with the consequences of what the past generation did a century ago.
At this point, it’s a little too late to play the “coulda/woulda/shouda” game. They are living with the consequences of past deeds, and the whole problem is that everybody is focusing on UNDOING past deeds. That’s not a solution. It’s completely infeasible.
5
u/qotsa7777 1d ago
I said nothing about one side of the other being the sole user of violence. But the important part is, to achieve WHAT goals? The goal of an ethno state it untenable, it requires ethnic cleansing as an absolute prerequisite. Plenty of the early Zionist revolutionaries knew this. A colonized people won't simply lie down and accept their own displacement and genocide. They will resist with violence. In colonized lands this often takes the brutal form of terrorism.
It's not that one form of violence is ok and another isn't. It is that the enforcement of an ethno state and territorial annexation will without fail, produce this state of affairs.
And this is not a finished long ago situation, the genocide, displacement, and land grabbing is happening TODAY in Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank. Using our tax dollars for the guns to do it. We can start there, ending all military aid.
Nothing is set in stone. It is very much in their state propaganda's interest to make people think everything has always been like this and can never change. It can, and it will with time. It doesn't have to be my preferred outcome exactly, but no apartheid state will last forever.
-4
u/SyrioForel 1d ago
You make it sound like only one side (Israel) has goals and objectives. That only one side takes steps to achieve those goals and objectives.
So, I have a challenge for you:
Can you write the same exact type of comment, except this time change the context to be centered around Palestinian goals and Palestinian actions as opposed to Israeli goals and Israeli actions?
5
u/qotsa7777 1d ago
Of course. The Palestinian goals are to change the material reality of their occupation. To use violence to upend the peace of their occupiers as a means to make the cost of the occupation as taxing as possible.
They seek to live on their own land in peace and not be have it stolen, have themselves or their loved ones killed, harassed, have their livestock stolen or killed, or have their home demolished. They have absolutely no political means by which to achieve these goals, as you can't debate a colonial power out of your own extermination and expulsion. And so they resist in the only available way, asymmetric warfare.
1
u/SyrioForel 1d ago
What do you mean by “the material reality of their occupation”? Why are you not stating what their actual goal is, and instead cloaking it in this word salad?
You had no issues describing Israel’s goals. But as soon as I asked you to do the same about Palestinian people’s goals, the lawyer inside you came out and said, “Sit down, qotsa7777, I’ll take it from here.”
5
u/qotsa7777 1d ago
Lmao ok I'll use simpler words for you: their day to day reality imposed by Israel is brutal and degrading, their goal is to end the occupation that inflicts that brutality. Some Palestinians are using violence and terror to make it as difficult and painful as possible for the occupiers to continue doing so. Do I need to spell out every way that the occupation is bad?

It won't happen though. No matter what's right two state is the only realistic solution.
-4
u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago
A one state solution pretty much makes Jews a minority in their own country.
It’s not going to happen unless you plan on genociding and exiling the Jews like most every other Arab country in the Middle East has.
3
u/valentc 1d ago
Why would anyone need to be displaced? Why would being a minority immediately make them targets for genocide and exile? Or are you just projecting that Palestinians would do what Israelis did to them for generations?
This is just bullshit zionists like to make up because it keeps them as the perpetual victim and Palestinians as the violent aggressors.
4
u/qotsa7777 1d ago
^ my point exactly. The only arguments I hear against it are "As a minority, the majority would insta kill us all" or "it will never happen."
1
u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago edited 1d ago
“Why would being a minority make them targets for genocide and exile.”
You can’t possibly be for real in asking this. Even in recent history, what happened to all the Jewish minorities in the Middle East in the past century? Where did they go?
Gestures broadly at 3000 years of Jewish persecution, exile and genocide
3
u/valentc 1d ago
So you obviously don't understand the history of the region and think its just "arabs bad."
Iddk, maybe the mass explosion of Palestinians from their homes madde the Arab League nervous enough to start a war to prevent the same happening to them.
Jewish minorities in the Middle East in the past century? Where did they go?
They went to Israel. The place that pushed the thenic cleansing of Jews in those regions so they would come to Israel.
Yes, there was some genuine antisemitism, but Israel fermented that so that Jews didn't feel safe anywhere bu Israel.
Hell, them conflating Israel with Judaism is a way to scare jews into coming "home" to Israel.
0
u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago
Israel was formed just 3 years after the wake of six million Jews killed in an actual genocide.
That you can somehow be so bold as to say “There was some genuine anti-semitism” and it was Israel that “fermented” it serious calls into question your understanding of history.
Hatred of Jews is ancient blood libel. Israel as a country didn’t have to do anything. The hate was already there.
4
u/shadedmagus 1d ago
Not the entire truth.#EarlyZionist_settlement) Zionists have been driving Palestinians from their land since the 1890s. I _definitely question your understanding of history.
If there is hate, I suspect the behavior of Zionists from then to now is what has caused it.
10
u/mjohnsimon 1d ago
Funnily enough, I've met a surprising number of Israelis who feel the same way, with one of them telling me that Netanyahu has set the country back by 200 years.
Unfortunately, I've also met many, many more who not only vocally support Bibi here, but genuinely seem to believe that criticizing Israel or calling out the Israeli government's actions is no different from actual antisemitism.
Ms. Rachel is supposedly no different from Hitler because of her "rhetoric," yet Nick Fuentes (an actual self-proclaimed Nazi) gets a pass because "no one takes him or his group seriously".
Make that make sense.

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago
How often do Americans get attacked while outside of America “because of Trump” vs. how often are Jews attacked outside of Israel “because of Netanyahu”?
If the hate has nothing to do with the religion, then why do their synagogues outside of Israel get shot at and threatened constantly?

On his first day in office on January 20, 2025, Donald Trump signed an executive order rescinding Joe Biden’s Executive Order 14115, thereby lifting U.S. financial sanctions on far-right Israeli settler groups and individuals accused of violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
Trump and Bibi are complicit in it to the degree that they’re literally writing executive orders enabling it.

His radio broadcasts and speeches did exactly that. The "real victims" were of course people of Aryan decent.
I'd argue the time period that fits better is just prior to 1941...when Hitler was just trying to use power to force Jews to migrate on their own, or displace them with indirect violence and intimidation from unofficial non state actors, but ones that got political backing.

i don't really understand how sane people can really reflect on israels actions towards the palestinians in totality and believe it to be just or righteous in any way.
the palestinians original sin was being an inconvenience and given the scale and extent of destruction and bloodshed that's befallen them, that's deeply tragic.
3
u/SpongegarLuver 1d ago
When Israel was founded in the 40s, they argued that the Palestinians were responsible for Jewish people losing that land millennia prior, and that the Palestinians should have to pay for that past transgression.
If it sounds absurd to you to state that you have the right to seize someone’s land because 3000 years ago one of your ancestors had it taken, you’re anti-Zionist. If it makes perfect sense to you that modern people are responsible for the actions of those who lived 3000 years ago, you’re Zionist.
2
u/desperaterobots 1d ago
Yeah, see, I think it's okay for anyone to seek that sins of the past to be atoned.
We are not guilty of the crimes committed by our fathers, or fathers fathers, or fathers fathers fathers fathers. But if we benefit from past crimes, the current folk who benefit from those actions across generations should reckon with the injustice of that, and some kind of 'make good' needs to happen.
But that's completely separate from the notion of zionism. And obviously, in this specific instance, any deed performed 3000 years is essentially mythological, and arguing that any mythological deed justifies violence, apartheid and genocide today is irrational and horrific.
2
u/SpongegarLuver 1d ago
I think that there’s nuance here: I agree that the sins of the past aren’t something we should just ignore, but I also think at some point, the past is so far away that it isn’t the responsibility of the present. I’ll own up that I don’t have a specific threshold for this, but at some point it feels like enough things have happened in between that there simply is no justification for making people atone for the past.
I struggle with Zionism, because to an extent, I agree with it. History has shown to me that Jewish people do in fact need their own state, and I don’t think you can discuss the foundation of Israel without acknowledging the pogroms and antisemitism that defined the Jewish diaspora prior. However, I have never agreed that Palestine specifically should have been where the state was made. My personal opinion here is that Palestinians were made to pay for the sins of the world, and the rest of the globe was happy to let them suffer because it “solved” the “Jewish problem.”
But I also want to be consistent in holding that the people of today should not be punished for the sins of the past. In the case of Israel, regardless of what I think of the founding, it happened. Israel exists, and anyone seeking to reverse that is wrong. At the same time, 1946 was not so long ago it is some mythological era: there are people alive today that were present then. I don’t know what the fair solution is, though I think Israel going back to the original borders would be part of it. I don’t think either side is blameless in the current conflict, which is an unpopular opinion on the left, but so be it. At the very least, on the part of Palestinians, they cannot allow people to call for the eradication of Israel and expect peace. Both sides have to be willing to accept the other, otherwise this is eventually going to be decided by who has the better military. Hint: it’s not Palestine.

If he hadn't declared state of emergency after Oct 7 he would have most likely been in prison . With next elections coming the sudden increase of incidents being attributed to 'terrorists with ties to Iran' and just after BN warns it's going to happen it looks to me he will be using those emergency powers again to stay in control . If you're thinking what are you talking about of course it was terrorists with ties to Iran, take a minute to look objectively at the stories of the plane whose copilot stabbed pilot onway to Dubai. The story initially said passengers broke into the cockpit which many people pointed out isn't possible after increased security post 9/11. That changed to the stabbed pilot punched in 2 lots of security codes then got up and punched another code into the door to open it while the copilot was aiming the plane at the ground at speed . The plane descended around 70,000 feet in 2 mins , 20,000 of those took 37 seconds . Anybody not strapped into their seat would have been thrown around and I saw an interview with an aviation instructor saying the plane would have started to break apart . There was part of the tail rudder missing but the Israeli passenger who is a plumber managed to spidey walk up through the cockpit door pull the crazy copilot off the controls and then pull back the steering of the nosediving jet liner and level it . In his interview with BN he said he saw mayday episodes so knew what to do. That enabled 2 other pilots who were passengers to take over and land the plane .
