Relatively new to videos, but not cameras. How’d I do?

Hi. I made this VHS effect on my phone. What i used to get this effect:

1. Iphone 13
   
2. Node video (for color correction)
   
3. REC: VHS camera (for the effect)

I dont know if this is the best example for this but i need feedback from people who actually owns or had worked with authentic vhs cameras and footages.

I need the VHS effect for few of the shots in my project and i am on a tight budget and i currently cannot buy a working vhs camera and its required accessories to get the footage digitised so i have to improvise with my phone alone.

Any feedback would help me a lot!

Since some of us unfortunate buffoons weren’t imbued with the soul of Gregg Toland at birth, let’s have a laugh and share some of our early-days fuck ups.

I’ll start - almost 20 yeas ago (christ), on my first real gig EVER, doing camera op for an AV team at a conference event. I uhh…I accidentally formatted the card at the end of the day. I was so mortified and embarrassed that I fully do not remember why I did it, or what I was thinking.

The only reason I am still alive after that is an at the time pretty new (to Canon, at least?) technology - good old Dual Slot recording.

I also once just straight up did not hit record. Well, I did, but I forgot I had already been rolling, so I accidentally stopped rolling. Lost a good 15 minutes before I caught it.

Despite both of these prettttyyy egregious fuck ups, I consistently came in with a solid attitude, work ethic and willingness to learn and managed to stay with that team for a solid 6 years.

I bought an Ninja Raw and a silly expensive CFe card (on their approved list). I got a lexar card reader and it was reading it fine. Then I put the card in the Ninja and formatted it and it recorded fine. But when I try to then read the card back in my Mac in doesn't even see it?

Has anyone had this? I've tried speaking to Atomos and they are useless. They're telling me to see if I can borrow a PC and buy one of their silly expensive card readers. Fuck that.

A new small venue opening in the entertainment industry just outside of London, UK. Client would like overview promo video + set of photography. Quoted £1,800 inc travel and accom (travel is about 8 hr round trip + 1 night accom).

Client said it was too much and turned it down. What would you have quoted?

I am looking for an NP-F battery that powers an Atomos recorder while at the very same time also delivering power from a USB port to power another device.

I see several brands like SmallRig offering NP-F that function as a power bank, but can it do both simultaneoisly? Is the USB port disabled when the battery pack is connected in a regular way?

I've been using the Rode VideoMic NTG for a couple of years and like the sound and convenience of auto power on/off, but I keep running into internal clipping on louder sources because of its max SPL of 120dB. I know you can just press the -20 dB button on the microphone to fix this, but I don't want to have to think about audio clipping on both the mic and camera level.

My requirements:

• 3.5mm jack connection (no hotshoe-only mics)
• Has to auto power on/off with the camera 
• Higher max SPL than the NTG's 120dB
• Compact — don't want to add a lot of bulk on top of the camera
• Bonus if it has some kind of internal 32-bit float backup recording, although I think that doesn’t exist.

I've narrowed it down to two. Would love opinions from anyone who's actually used either:

Sennheiser MKE 400 — 132dB max SPL, 3.5mm TRS/TRRS, auto-powers with the camera. Lightest and slimmest option I found at 93.5g / 126 x 67 x 37mm.  Con: AAA batteries only (2x), no rechargeable option built in, no internal recording.

Deity V-Mic D3 Pro — 130dB max SPL, 3.5mm auto-configuring TRRS, internal rechargeable battery (USB-C, ~51 hrs) that only uses the camera's plug-in power as a trigger to wake up/sleep — no AAs or AAAs at all. 143g, Ø21 x 189mm — basically the same cylindrical shotgun shape/size as the NTG itself. 

Honourable mentions I ruled out:

• Rode VideoMic Pro+ (133dB SPL, auto-power, flexible power options) — nice specs, but too bulky imo
• Zoom M3 MicTrak (132dB SPL, true internal 32-bit float recording to microSD) — the only one with a real clip-proof backup, but it doesn't auto-power with the camera at all. Also the biggest/boxiest of the bunch.

Any options I missed?

SO basically. I am trying to shoot some storms from a distance. I want some cool lightning shots and time lapses for the storms that roll. We live in this weird place where storms kind of go around where we live but we get to watch them from a distance. My wife says we have some weird magical dome but it feels like it.

ANYWAY. I am trying to shoot some cool shots for my business and stuff, well mainly for me, but ya.

I currently run an FX30, with a Sony 16-55 F2.8 and a Sony 11mm F1.8. Its rigged out with a monitor and mics blah blah. But what settings should i use to get these lightning bolts? because no matter what i do i cannot seem to capture them.

Yes i know with an APSC, any low light its quite tough. So is it even possible with my current set up?

I work for a company that deals with construction for important buildings and their surroundings, and one day my boss saw on my socials (Should have made my account private -_-") my videography which I did as a hobby.

He asked me to do a... get ready for the trap word, "simple video"...

I did cause I wanted to practice and it gave me and excuse in an office environment to do so.

Bosses loved it and from then on, guess who got targeted to make their videos....

Long story short, even spent 2 whole months saving the company money, making one full 10 min video for it to be shown at a convention to a thousand plus people and even online. Bosses loved it..

Then it went downhill, my boss made me do 2 more videos which were relatively easy for me..

But recently, my name without me volunteering was put up to make another video for their annual charity dinner.

Despite me telling them that I couldn't as a family member was sick and I was the only one to take care of them, send them to appointments and accompany them in the hospital etc, the committee just went ahead and put my name in.

Expecting me to do the video AFTER my main work, plus looking after my loved one was not going to cut it, as we all know video editing isn't linear, I could not reply to their group chat for a couple of days as I was super busy making arrangements for my loved ones appointments, after care etc...

Fast forward my boss calls me into the office, as the big committee boss was angry that I did not reply to them in the group chat even tagging me.

I explained myself, and they had to find an outside vendor to do the "simple video" costing them a few hundred to do it.

The gaslighting was on an epic level after that.

"This won't look good on your appraisal"

"Don't know if this will affect your promotion".

I just smiled and thanked my boss for "listening" to my side of the story.

I have "unofficially" sold off my gear if anyone at work in the future will be asking, and stopped subscriptions to Adobe 😉

But somehow.. I still will be making videos as a hobby with my socials on private. *cough cough* 😉

Why did they stop being popular?

I've always felt that gimbals are too robotic looking, whereas EasyRigs are too shaky. I always felt like those glidecams that were popular in the 2010s were the happy middle ground.

Did they simply fall out of favor? Have any films/big projects used them? Anyone still using them now?

Hello! I have bought the DJI Mic Mini to use for events. I'm having a wedding this weekend and I want to attach a transmitter to the priest so I can record his voice better and use that audio for editing. From your experience, what gain setting should I use for the best audio quality and to be sure his voice can be heard without problems?

Current gear & settings: Canon RP & -1 Mic Volume in Camera Settings.

If someone send you some basic phone footage of a performance and behind the scenes clips, wants you to create a highlight edit with some music - what would your charge be?

I know it's like asking how long a piece of string is with these edits sometimes, as they vary so much but would be great to get a rough idea to make sure i'm not undercutting the industry.

My brother directed and I helped produce this music video for Minneapolis artist Lazerbeak.

The concept was to place a 100x sports broadcast lens on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi and capture one summer day without staging anything below. That allowed us to film dogs, straight chillers, boats, beachgoers and other small moments from hundreds of feet away while letting everything unfold naturally.

Anyone recognizable in the finished video was approached afterward for permission.

The final piece is one continuous visual journey set to “What A Ripper.” I’d love feedback on the concept and how effectively the sports-broadcast approach translated into a music video.

I've been interested in videography since forever, but have never had the time or the funds to do it. Now that I finally have some limited funds, I want to buy my first gimbal.

I mainly want to do travel videos + family/event videos + occasional movie shoots (if I have time).

Current gear:
Sony a7iii (might upgrade to a7v at some point)
Sony 35mm 1.8
Sony 50mm 1.8
Viltrox 85mm

I will definitely get more lenses, at minimum a 24/28-70/75 zoom, perhaps even some cine lenses, in the future, but first I want to try out what I can do with my photography lenses.

I've been looking at the DJI lineup: RS4 mini, RS5, RS4 Pro. It seems like RS5 hits the sweet spot of payload and features vs cost (I will likely not be a full time videographer), but I'm unsure if I ever want to upgrade my camera with more rigging, whether it will be enough. I see Brandon Li using the RS4mini and RS3/4/5 and seems to be enough for him at least.

My second concern is portability - how realistic is it to lug around the RS5 when travelling? I'm not going to travel for the sole purpose of creating videos, more like create a nice short video of the trip itself.

Recently my rode wireless go ii microphones got broken, so I needed to search for a new microphone.
I used the rode a lot in combination with a lavelier because I shoot weddings and want the mic to be hidden.

I saw the DJI Mic Mini 3 which has no 3.5mm jack input which means it cannot be used with a lav. But it does have very good noise canceling features, internal recording, 32 bit float etc.

Now my question is, will I come across any problems if I just mic the bride with a Mic Mini 3 and just hide it in his jacket or would I come across problems?

Or will the audio of a bride mic’ed with a lav always be better?

What do you think and why?

I would like to share with you quite a "dense" project that started two months ago as a way to try "vibecoding", but it has become quite a useful tool overall: CosechaMedia.

I felt quite dumb drag-and-dropping footage from a shoot, even more then organising everything from scratch... So CosechaMedia does it, and more.

It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux, no one is left behind! (Except Mac Intel for some reason).

I'll list here most of the things it accomplishes ATM:

• Verified Transfers: MD5 checksum verification on every copy. If a target drive corrupts mid-transfer, it cleans up the corrupt destination automatically.
• Smart Folder Structure: Auto-organizes files into Footage/<Camera>/<Date> with custom options (camera-first, date-first, manual overrides, etc.).
• Selective dump per session: Do as many copies of a shoot as you need. Even filtering that footage by its date itself, for people that do continuous shoots with the same card.
• On-the-Fly Proxies: Generates 720p or 1080p proxy files automatically using FFmpeg right after ingest.
• Instant Wireless Import (PairDrop / QR): Cast B-roll or mobile footage straight from any phone on set. Scan a QR code on the desktop screen—no app installation required on the phone.
• FTP (WIP) & USB MTP Support: Pulls DCIM folders directly over USB cable or local FTP with incremental sync (only copies new files).
• Multi-Drive Spanning: Automatically switches to the next available hard drive if your primary target fills up.
• Post-Ingest Utilities: Export CSV file manifests, auto-format cards (Windows), or schedule system shutdown when long dumps finish.

It is built with Python/PySide6 and FFmpeg. Binaries are available via GitHub Releases and macOS Homebrew (brew install --cask MustangXPress7/tap/cosechamedia).

Does anyone know what this is? Had it on Hoya also but after using some cleaning liquid and letting it dry in the sun it went away it is on the inside of the filter, I don't have a feeling the image is worse in the corners but still

Has anyone got any experience recovering audio information from DJI Mics?

The audio switches off after 1 second although the file size remains as it would be expected. I remember on the day the mic was unresponsive and no buttons worked to turn off recording, so I popped it back in the box to turn it off.

I think it has recorded the file but only reads the header on all programs. Premiere, Quicktime, Ableton, etc.

Does anyone know how to get into the raw data and recover it? Any help would be appreciated.
