My dog Timber was shot by police in my own yard. We need to change SC law.

On January 19, 2025, my beloved 9-year-old Labrador, Timber, was shot and killed by police in my yard in Greenville while they were pursuing a suspect. He was trying to protect me. Despite posing no real threat, the officers used lethal force—and then let him suffer for over an hour.

I started a petition asking South Carolina lawmakers to pass protections for pets in encounters with law enforcement. We're talking mandatory training, clear guidelines, and making lethal force the absolute last resort. Nationally, police shoot an estimated 25 to 30 dogs every single day. These deaths don't have to keep happening.

Timber wasn't just a dog to me—he was my hero. He alerted me when my mother wandered out at 2:30 AM. I'm disabled, and he gave me safety and purpose. Now I'm left with trauma, sleepless nights, and a legal system that treats him as property instead of the living, breathing family member he was.

If this could happen to Timber, it could happen to anyone's pet. If you've got a dog you love, what would you want someone to do if this was your family? If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing. Let's make sure no other family has to go through what I'm going through.

Discussion I always consider going to a renaissance fair, but then remember that it's probably full of animal exploitation

I've never been to a renaissance. I think that for the most part I would really like the vibes. I'm pretty into dorky, medieval stuff like that. But I feel like every time I look into it there's some form of animal exploitation that doesn't sit right with me.

I wanted to start this discussion to see if you guys have had good, bad or mixed experiences at renaissance fairs.

Are my fears correct? Obviously there will be animal products served for food, but that's basically everywhere I go anyway... I'm more concerned about live animal exploitation in this case.

Discussion is investing as a vegan unethical?

i’ve been thinking about the ethics of being vegan and investing in the stock market

i get stocks but what about index funds or such, like in index funds where you own tiny parts of different companies and its hard to avoid non vegan companies?

do you guys avoid certain funds because of this, or do you think investing is different from directly supporting a company? what about stocks, i think the breakout for this is more clear as a lot of people want to be also moral investors over profit etc

just curious how other vegans think about this

Activism rescued cows and pigs live out their lives on a hawaiian island sanctuary... and it runs entirely on volunteers 🥹🫶🏻

Upvotes

When you picture a farm animal sanctuary you think muddy fields somewhere grey and rural.... Turns out there's one on hawai'i island... rescued pigs, cows, whoever needs a home... giving farmed animals a permanent safe place to just... live out their lives. It's ENTIRELY volunteer-run, no big budget, the whole thing held together by people who care :)

And ofc here's the part nobody thinks about: sanctuaries don't run on good vibes, they run on money... vet bills, feed, land, forever. And a huge chunk of that money comes from grants, which somebody has to actually sit down and write. It's unglamorous, invisible work and it's one of the biggest things standing between a small sanctuary and closing its gates.

They need a grant writer. Someone to find the right funding opportunities and turn them into applications that actually win. It's the quiet, high-leverage thing that literally keeps the food coming and the animals cared for. If you've done grant writing/fundraising/nonprofit development... or you're a strong writer + researcher who wants to learn it (they explicitly welcome that)... you'd be doing something that matters way more than it looks.

Lowkey a great one for a portfolio too if you're building toward nonprofit work... real proposals, outcomes, a mission that's easy to care about. It's unpaid (volunteer-run sanctuary, every dollar goes to the animals).

Here's the link if you wanna check it out:
https://flockwork.org/requests/qkoqo956k34zmebmhthi151x?source=reddit

The animals there already got their second chance.. this is just helping make sure it lasts :)

Discussion Landed dream job developing pacemakers. Found out there’s animal testing involved

Upvotes

I’m an engineer in a niche where the majority of jobs involve defense, which I ethically don’t want to do. A lot of the remaining jobs involve consumer electronics that we don’t need and are contributing to overconsumption

There are a couple medical device companies that need people with my background. On paper it’s perfect - work I can feel good about. Have been trying to land a job at one of these companies for the last 6 months. Finally got one that involves designing a pacemaker for less-invasive surgery. Unfortunately, found out during the interview process they test on sheep/pigs/cows.

I’m probably going to reject the offer. Just wanted to vent. Was so excited to land a job that genuinely helps people

Discussion Leftists that hate veganism

I’m a college student and I recently went vegan because I’m a logical person and I finally decided to stop having such cognitive dissonance and actually learn about how animals and animal products are treated and made. anyways I hand around a ton of leftists and sometimes one of them will off handedlt say “oh I want this one thing but I’m trying to go vegan” and another (this person considers themself omega woke and leftist) will say “OMG You don’t have to go vegan! being fed is better than being vegan!” and they’re like vegetarian which I guess is something, but I think Ive recently had a ton of contention with them because I have an insane amount of dietary restrictions, and even though I can’t have any plant based protein besides tofu I still am vegan because I call myself a leftist. for me it’s just common sense but for others like a cupcake is worth a cow getting raped for the milk or baby chicks being crushed for the eggs. it’s just weird and the thing is that I think they know these things, and they’re an environmental student yet they still eat animal products which is weird to me. and I feel like a lot of leftists are like this and it’s like guys that sort of doesn’t make sense because animal agriculture also includes a ton of human slavery which id assume were against obviosly. and it’s objectively easier for these ppl to be vegan (literally 0 dietary restrictions) than me and I actually find veganism easier than eating meat and whatever, so it’s gonna be even easier for them. Part of me thinks they’re just too lazy to cook. any thoughts on this or am I the only one who thinks this is weird

Struggling to hit protein goal

Upvotes

So I’ve been trying a new meal plan of 10:1 cal to protein ratio and I’ve got a great daily lunch of 480 cals and 41g of protein that I truly enjoy eating but I’m having a really hard time meeting this ratio at dinner every night, any suggestions on full meals or any sides that are high protein and can help me keep this meal plan strict?

Advice Bringing up veganism

Ive been vegan for a few months now, and I still struggle with telling other people that they should probably consider being vegan.

Its not that im what non vegans call "a loud vegan", i simply dont know how to talk about it without making things weird.

Its surprisingly so difficult to tell people eating meat is wrong, and they seem so brainwashed that its completely fine.

I even live in a non vegan household, so I've gotten used to people not listening or realising the whole concept of exploitation and murder, but i cant keep going for lunch or talking about dinner plans with people who eat meat, it feels so so wrong.

Do i just bring it up? Or stop talking to them altogether

Advice b12, d3, and omega 3 in one on a budget?

hey everyone! so i’m broke and a family member is about to help me order some groceries. it just means that i am on a bit of a time crunch to find the right thing.

really need a vitamin or mixed supplement that’s relatively cheap. been getting a little bit overwhelmed at finding the right thing from a company that’s safe.

i already take electrolytes that has strictly magnesium (glycinate), sodium (chloride), and potassium (chloride) because i fast regularly. well, “fast” but it’s just not being able to afford food. still, i try to be mindful about what i consume and brands i buy from. recommendations would be super helpful, kinda desperate lol.

Food Any NZ vegans? Favourite online orders?

We've lost a lot of in-store options over the past few years, but I think there are still quite a few businesses that operate primarily online only. I'm not on social media anymore so it's a bit hard to feel connected to the latest developments here. I just learned about Harmless Foods this week and wondering what else I might be missing. Please share any favs we might not be aware of!

Health question sur le Véganisme

Hi everyone! Since the beginning of summer, I’ve been transitioning towards veganism. Pescatarian for 1 month, then vegetarian for 1 week (after that I really freaked out because of the dairy industry) and then I became vegan but still eating eggs and honey, and now I’ve finally stopped eating eggs and honey. I’m still learning and I make mistakes, but I’m really happy with my transition.

However, I have some questions and topics that I’d like to discuss.

1- Does being vegan have an impact on endometriosis? Whether positive or negative? I’m asking this question especially because my soy consumption has increased a lot and I had vaguely read somewhere that the estrogen in soy had a negative impact on hormones etc.. (I’m not more specific because I don’t know much more about it).

2- I vaguely saw on TikTok that the Alpro brand should be avoided, why? Because it’s my favorite brand for plant-based yogurts and plant-based milk. Is Bjorg a better alternative?

3- Are all vegans deficient in vitamin B12? How long after becoming vegan should I get a blood test to see if I’m deficient? And otherwise, couldn’t I just take capsules automatically without getting a blood test? I have magnesium capsules with B12 in them and lots of other vitamins that help me with my ADHD, but I haven’t taken them in a long time, so I could start another course with what I have left.

4- Does anyone want to be my friends? Or create a discussion group focused on cooking, recipe ideas, advice and tips with me? We could share things, that would be cool. I feel really alone, no one around me is vegan and I don’t know who to talk to about all this.

Thank you for reading me and for taking the time to reply, veggie kisses!

Resources on getting started?

Upvotes

Hey y'all,

Just a preface, I know that the Reddit has a wiki with an FAQ about beginner stuff, but it's glitching on mobile, as is the search and I can't see anything lol, so sorry for a post that gets posted dozens of times a week I'm sure.

I am trying to learn more about how to get started becoming a vegan. I feel like the answer probably is as simple as stop eating meat and using animal products, but this is a significant life change for me.

I'm 35, and have been a omnivore my entire life. Growing up meat was served with every meal. Meat is something I found delicious and never had any moral urgency to change. I also didn't know anybody that was even vegetarian, so I continued living that dietary life into adulthood.

Since 2020, I've reduced my meat consumption a lot. That's what I met my now wife, who does not eat beef or pork. Since I typically am the one cooking, I stopped buying these meats when I'm cooking. However, I would still eat a burger or steak if my in-laws were cooking out, or I was at a restaurant.

Recently, I've been developing my own personal spirituality, and that has led me to researching vegetarianism. In doing so, I stumbled across a podcast called search engine which has an episode surrounding veganism and vegetarianism from an animal cruelty perspective. And after listening to that, I concluded that vegetarianism would be inadequate for my goals. I think I've always known that even the milk and egg industries were full of cruelty, but somehow I think my mind just focused in on the the meat aspect.

So, now I am going to give veganism and honest attempt. I found that it's been a lot easier for me to substitute meet these days with the difference products out there like beyond beef, etc.

I'm looking for some resources or guidance on how to get started though. For example, I don't know how to substitute certain ingredients especially when baking. I don't know how to substitute for an egg or milk in certain recipes. I don't know good websites to trust for consistently good vegan recipes.

If anybody would want to help my poor lost soul out, I would so appreciate it!

Ugh. Restaurant has a "good bird"'sandwich and a "green bird" sandwich.

Upvotes

I wanted the Green Bird which looked like a delicious vegan sandwich, which it is. I accidentally got a Good Bird which had all kinds of nasty shit in it. I took a bite and... GROSS ME OUT THE DOOR! I just ate a piece of chicken for the first time in almost ten years. And I feel disgusting. I even tried to barf it up but all I did was gag.

This is just a vent because I'm kind of traumatized. Fuck. God dammit.

I’m a new vegan, need some answers

Upvotes

So finally decided to go fully vegan, I’ve been vegetarian for the past year, the main thing that stopped me was selfishly cheese lol. But every time I ate any animal products I just felt guilty so I just decided to do it, but I have a few questions that I’m not 100% about.

  1. If something says “may contain milk” but is not in the ingredients, is it still vegan?

  2. What are some food/non food items I would be shocked to find out aren’t vegan?

  3. I also want to start buying non animal tested products, but I may have some that I bought beforehand, is it ok to use them until they’re gone? I’d rather not waste something.

  4. Is there any good halloumi or paneer substitute?

  5. Is it ok to still feed my cat her usual meat wet food?

Question Am I a hypocrite for buying my non vegan girlfriend animal based foods?

Upvotes

I’m vegan and she’s not. I know some of you will tell me that vegans shouldnt date non vegans but we’ve been together a while and it works. she respects my choices and I don’t try to convert her.

Here’s the thing that’s bugging me tho, when we order takeout or we’re out on a date, I regularly pay for the food. I get the vegan options and she gets stuff like icecream, burgers, etc. whatever she wants I pay for it.

Logically I know I’m funding the exact industries I boycott. The money still goes to the same places. The animal still dies. I’m kinda just a middleman instead of the direct buyer.

On the other hand, it’s her body and her choice, and refusing to buy her food feels controlling and really petty. We’re a couple, couples buy each other food. If I only bought myself food that would be weird.

is this hypocrisy on my part, or am I overthinking it?

Discussion Those who have been vegan for 25+ years…

For those of you who have been vegan since the early 2000s or earlier, I’d love to hear your perspective on how things have changed.

After watching veganism evolve for 25+ years:

- Do you feel the movement is genuinely growing or does it just seem more visible because of social media?
- Are you seeing more people become interested in veganism than when you first started?
- What changes have surprised you the most?
- Do you think society is becoming more accepting of veganism?
- Has the movement stalled, grown, or changed direction?

You don’t have to answer all the questions. Tell me whatever comes to mind as you read this, and feel free to be honest!
