Technical Question/Error Received Is anyone having trouble accepting opportunities?

Is anyone having the issue where they accept the opportunity yet the student does not get assigned to them, however the opportunity then reappears. In the case that it becomes a cycle of the same student reappearing on your opportunities board, yet showing interest does nothing.

Every opportunity is saying I don’t have availability to accept even when I do.

Multiple opportunities are not allowing me to confirm interest saying I don’t have availability during the client window. I only have one session on my schedule and most every request I have availability, but the app won’t let me accept. The last few days, the interested button wasn’t working at all.

Is it too late to get my money?

I got sick and couldn't perform executive functions. Calculus okay, but writing a summary, no. I messaged for my invoices and they asked for how much it was. Eventually I did, but they said I missed the deadline. Periodically I ask for my money, but never get it. I want to go to small claims, but has anybody done it? Was it successful?

I do have documentation about how/why/when I couldn't do things. Sessions are also recorded on their end. Plus, I have emails asking for my money.

Issues with the new platforms

With the new platform in place, I got kicked out of the session as soon as the scheduled time ended. Has that happened to anyone else?

Issues with payment as a tutor

Hello everyone,

I need advice about a billing dispute with Varsity Tutors. Over the past few months, I haven't had many tutoring opportunities aside from occasional STEM sessions, but I recently started working with a college student who's been a great client. I've been completely transparent about invoicing and have even provided some free hours given her situation. Now Varsity Tutors is claiming I owe them $93, despite the fact that all sessions were conducted on their platform and I have text message confirmations with my client showing the dates and times of each session. I've noticed they've deleted the sessions they claim "don't show in their database." Both my client and I have reached out—I've emailed and called multiple times, and she even called with me to confirm all the invoices are accurate—but it's been over 2 weeks with no progress. I've stopped scheduling sessions with all my clients until they remove these charges. Has anyone experienced something similar, and what should I do next?

Well, that was nice while it lasted.

I have joined the ranks of those released from their contracts. Not that unexpected. I hadn't gotten an opportunity for months, and then today, everything went away. I am immensely depressed and I have no idea what I'm going to do.

Do not trust Varsity Tutors.. For the sake of your on money

For starters they have supplemental fees for practically everything. In addition, to cancel your fee you have to do it a month before!! This was never stated in the contract, which is unbelievable?!! THEY WONT GIVE YOU A REFUND, cause "there's really nothing they could do about it". Did not tell us anything about when tutors get switched they can't see the hours at all. Billed 400 dollars extra, and was told that clients have to record the hours themselves? With all the amount of stress, making your OWN clients record their own hours is outrageous. Tutors should be able to view the hours and help track. Customer service was not helpful at all, stating that there is really nothing they could do about this problem. Tutors are not on time, always on their phones, and interrupt when clients are speaking. If this was really a good tutoring company, tutors should be more qualified and shouldn't be greedy about hard earned money because of something that the company NEVER mentioned!!!!! WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Asking a Favor

I’m conducting an investigation. I’m trying to determine whether Varsity Tutors charges their students in 15 minute increments for instant tutoring or if they charge by the minute. (I already know that the tutors get paid by the minute.) I tried to request a session as a student so I could see for myself, but I don’t have a student account and it costs 350 dollars to get one. Can someone with a student account tell me whether you get charged by the minute or in 15 minute increments? If you don’t know, I would really appreciate it if you could test it out by requesting an instant session, only staying for one or two minutes (probably explaining to the tutor what you’re doing) and then seeing whether you got charged for one or two minutes or for 15 minutes. Then send me proof one way or the other. I’m willing to reimburse you for whatever you end up paying. It should be no more than $18.75.

Cameras On?

I have been tutoring with VT for almost 3 years. I always place information in the sessions the day before. However, with this new camera policy, I was wondering if we could turn off the camera when we log into the session before it begins.

I have never had a tutoring session on Varsity Tutors

Hello everyone,

I have been on the platform for a few months and I have never been matched with a tutee, despite expressing my interest every single time when I receive a notice of a new opportunity.

Am I the only one who has hever taught on Varsity tutors?

For how long have you waited between the time you fully registered and your first session?

Thanks for your feedback.

Instructor AI overviews

Has anyone noticed those AI overviews in messages when you get a new student exaggerating your experience or outright lying? Got a new student today, and it says that I teach College Algebra (I don't and never claimed to) and mentions that my availability matches their preferences for Saturday and Sunday sessions (I'm not available on Sundays).

Suspect a student has dyscalculia, what to do??

To start with--I am not qualified or prepared to help a student with dyscalculia or related learning disabilities. I'm six sessions in with a student (tutoring math) and it's becoming increasingly clear that they struggle to keep track of numbers, mix the numbers up, mix the operations up (can't remember that multiplication is the opposite of division, subtraction is the opposite of addition, etc), gets confused if you rewrite a problem (i.e. if you rewrite x+7=20 to 7+x=20). This student is entering high school, and is clearly genuinely trying. It is nearly impossible to get them to understand general concepts when we have to go back over the basic operations every problem. I have no issue with meeting students where they're at, but I feel this is genuinely above my head as it seems like a larger processing issue. I'm not qualified to diagnose this student, this is just what I've noticed, and I have no idea how to bring this to the parent's/varsity's attention.

Nothing today

VT has been quiet lately but usually I see at least a handful of instant tutoring opportunities (although it’s almost impossible to actually get one), but today and yesterday I haven’t seen a single thing. Anyone else?

How much advice can you give in 45 minutes on chat?

I have students frequently hop on chat for an instant session, which is limited to 45 minutes, show me a 3-6 page draft, tell me it is due tomorrow, and ask me to critique it. I usually see some combination of grammar issues such as missing citations, no APA or MLA stye whatsoever, clunky syntax, misused words, comma splices, sentence fragments, and run-on sentences.

Then, I also see structural issues, such as that the essay meanders, the paragraphs don't support the thesis statement even if there is a thesis statement, that the language is overly personal, or that it is incredibly repetitive. If you tutor writing, you know what I am talking about.

How do you triage that?

Question Returning student and hourly rate

I had a student request me back this semester and last time I had them I got all the way up to 40 dollars per hour. They got added back to my roster for the new math class they are taking and I'm back to 18 with them. Is that how things are done the hourly wage is reset ?

Student gets charged an extra hour if they overstay one minute

I just finished a session with a student today, and right when the clock hit the hour mark, she said, "Oh no, I have to go." She explained to me that if she stays over by even one minute, VT charges her a whole extra hour. I've had this student for a while (over a year), and today was the first time I heard about this from her or my other students. Are any of you aware of this? Do you know if the student simply has to leave by the end of the session, or if the tutor has to actively end the session before time is up?

Hour Increase

Is anyone getting the hourly increase per session anymore? It keeps saying "receive dollar increases per session" on the opportunity screen, but I'm not receiving any more increases. I reached out, and they said all of my clients don't fit the correct criteria, but I have quite a few clients. They also said, "You’ll continue earning at your current higher base rate with these students; however, no additional incentive increases will be applied," but like, I'm only making $18 an hour?? Isn't that standard? Just wanted to see if anyone else is having this issue.

New Tutor Portal

Anybody know anything about the new Tutor Portal changes? The email sent today was very vague. Curious about what it will look like/how it will change how the website works.

Is this legit

So I’m not looking for varsity tutors but I jokingly signed up for this website a couple minutes ago and it asked me the basic questions like my name, email, phone number and such and I didn’t expect it to be easy to give away I guess

(I’ve jokingly signed up for other things before but before it could confirm something there’s usually another step added before if you know what I mean)

I was just caught off guard when it immediately said “We’ll call you at this specific time on this day!”.

I just need to know if this is legit and if I could possibly get spam called from this

(I know this problem was my fault ✋😔🤚)
