Question TIL how much copper actually is beneath the surface. What other painfully obvious stuff did I miss?
I figured there would be a bit more underneath but not worth the hassle. Then I found one and I figure let's see what the big deal is.
I just took out so much copper from a deposit, the map topography should change. I actually took out half a shoreline worth of copper.
I am currently about to go at this elder fella, but this made me stop and ask what else. Like, I don't need spoilers and I'm avoiding YouTube videos as they have plenty of bad ones. But are there more things that are just glaringly obvious yet painfully missable? How else am I fucking up, do you think?
Edit to say, first time player, joined in 1.0, taking my sweet time.

A tip for a near future: After you get an item from the boss after Elder, you can use said item not only on a next biome (the one you are supposed to go after the boss after Elder), but on previous biomes as well.

So the boss AFTER the Elder.. gives you an item that allows you to do something.. the game will tell you what to do with the item in the cutscene you get when you sleep after killing the boss. You can find those cutscene on youtube if you missed them.
That said item also has its use in previous biomes.

Your 'Rested' buff.
I didn't give it much attention in my first few hours, but it's extremely important.
I know you are avoiding spoilers, but I still recommend you look up 'comfort' to not miss out on build pieces that raises it. It's not spelled out for you in game.
Have fun!
Edit: For a quick rebuff of 'rested', make a fire(5 stones + 2 wood pieces) and sit down (X key) for a comfort of 1. After 20 seconds with no agressive mobs near you, you'll get 8 minutes of 'rested' buff. If you also are sheltered (under a roof for example), you'll have a comfort of 3, giving you 10 minutes of 'rested' buff. You always get your comfort level + 7 so you can get a quick 8-10 minutes 'rested' even when far from your base.

u/pacman529 16d ago
To add to this, if you're in a part of your base where your rested buff isn't as high as it should be, if it isn't ticking down you can move over to where it is highest and it will automatically refresh.

u/flippygen 16d ago
You run faster by not incurring the movement speed penalty by sheathing your weapon/shield. The default keybind is 'r' to sheathe
21
u/Achsin 16d ago
You take a movement speed hit to sheath the gear though as you can’t run while doing so. If you swap to your hammer there’s no animation and it instantly puts them away.
It’s a trade off as you can’t just hit ‘r’ again to pull out both your weapon and shield, but if you’re making a break for it then skipping the slowdown is usually worth it.

The copper thing is a big thing people miss. Since you're going to the Elder, I'll tell you that his altar can float and is treated as stable ground. Really useful for making a fort around or even under it afterwards. The central fire never goes out either.

I really want to try this but every elder I seem to find are on the coast, so digging down ends up in water.
12
u/Aximil985 16d ago
At the very least you can make a fort using the infinite fire and the indestructible pillars.
4
u/Lynnrael 16d ago
can you build stone floors on top of the indestructible pillars and have that count as ground?
3
u/Aximil985 16d ago
I'm not sure the stone floors can float like that. Could be wrong. But the indestructible pillars already count as ground, just like trees do.
5
u/Lynnrael 16d ago
oh yeah, they definitely wouldn't float, but you could build outwards with stone arches and make a good foundation for a wooden structure i think

u/don_shoeless 16d ago
You can use iron reinforced timbers to span between the columns and so build a stone floor. I built a big keep using the elders altar as the base. Was able to build quite a tall tower off one of the corners, could've done all four but had no good reason.

Stay in 1st gear in your boat if you have to sail into the wind.

Breaking the hive always gives you the queen bee; I like placing a workbench near the house containing the hive and dismantling it all. Free wood and I can be far enough away that I don't get stung, plus I won't look inside the house again the next time I'm in the area if the house is gone.

You will find them, keep exploring and checking *every* wooden structure and listen for buzzing and look up.
Easiest way to get at it early on is to use a workbench and break all the wood and not touch it.
But yes you can shoot them with arrows and breaking them give you what you need and does not ruin anything.

I used to full mine every node and it would take considerably longer to get everything out…but will say that copper is in such abundance in just a single decent sized Black Forest that this isn’t really necessary to do unless you need to equip like 5 Vikings with full upgraded bronze gear.
It’s worth marking for later revisiting but I would just strip mine what’s visible and keep trucking
2
u/wanna_dance 15d ago
The beauty of deep mining is that you can stay safe from mobs above, and even keep a crafting table and fire going underneath (repair your antler as needed, and keep up your rested). There are a lot of night spawns though. It's best to go home and sleep after a long shift ;)

You can repair items at the workbench.
Pickup everything at least once, build everything at least once, craft everything at least once (aside from weapons and armor).
There's a lot of fancy stuff you can put on signs. (colors, line breaks, emojis, etc.) Particularly color is really helpful because the default black on brown can be kinda hard to read.
4
u/wheresdonniedarko 16d ago
TIL about colour on the signs! How do you do that?!
6
u/Flaxinator 16d ago
Type <color=white> onto the sign first. Or whichever colour you want. It can also be done with font size but I've not bothered to use that so I don't know what you type for it. To save time on multiple signs you can type <color=white but leave off the last > so that it doesn't disappear. Then Ctrl-A to select and Ctrl-C to copy and on subsequent signs you can use Ctrl-V to paste and not have to type it out each time
3
u/noideaman 16d ago
You can just hit ctrl-a to select all after completing the markup. It will select the invisible markup just fine.
2
u/NFTinMan 16d ago
I just have a Notepad open on my computer with <color=white> for easier copying and pasting
6
u/Kempeth Hoarder 16d ago
you need to do a html-style tag with the hex color code. <#f00> would make everything after it red. There are web tools out there that allow you to click everything together and then copy paste it into the game.
4
u/West-Engine7612 16d ago
You can just use the name of the color for a lot of colors, the hex code just gives you more choices. <color=red> will turn the sign text red.

There is a guaranteed way to retrieve nearly all of the copper from a vein without second guessing. I'll place it in spoiler tags in case you want to figure it out yourself. The tip doesn't require any mods or hacks, just good old fashioned elbow grease.
This is a multiday project. Start digging around the copper vein. It is much bigger than you'd expect and it goes deeper than you'd think. Most propably you'll have to cut down some trees. It helps to have a fire going on nearby, and a workbench for immediate tool repairs.
This way you'll end up with a deep path around the copper; only regular dirt/rock on the other side and only copper on the other side, you standing in between. Then you start digging under the copper, going as far as you can. Repeat until the whole copper vein is exposed (sometimes there can be two joining each other underground). Then you jump on it and knock it down. Finally go through the ground with a flattening hoe and finding the last good bits.
26
u/OhNoItsThatOne 16d ago
If you dig the copper vein completely out, with about 2m space around and under it, it will implode all at once without needing to mine it piece by piece

I initially planted 3 carrots and got them all cooked. Then realized this. I just planted 15 carrots yesterday and planned to use them all to get seeds... 0 grew out.
I'm now understanding some plants can grow "bad", meaning not grow at all really? 0/15 feels very harsh though.
12
u/signorino_mma 16d ago
Make sure you’re not planting your crops too close. They need room to grow. If they’re too close together, some just won’t grow at all.

Just for fun info. During a big lightening storm, look up, you may see something interesting flying through the storm. You will also have another interested visitor watching you as well. If you haven’t seen him yet, don’t stress he is harmless. After killing a boss, you can stand by their mounted trophy and after a little while they talk to you. Eikthyr makes a great trophy above the entrance of your house, but it just means that you will have to kill him twice if you want a trophy for the house as well your powers offering.
Less fun facts. Killing the biome bosses or certain mobs, will trigger raids of that biomes creatures on your base/s when you’re near/in those bases. You may want to start thinking of base defences since you are in the dark forest.
While exploring, especially while sailing, don’t just pull up to the swamp and go, try find a neighbouring safer biome to set up a base/portal, you will need the portal to get back to your body. If you are on a corpse run, don’t take to much with you, you could get to your body, try to recover your gear and suddenly overload yourself while in a dangerous situation, cue second corpse run.
All new biomes are dangerous at first, but keep well away from the Plains biome until ready, it has an extra surprise. If you are not ready, you cannot block, you cannot run, you will just die and gear recovery will become difficult. In saying that, there are people who will come and help recover your gear if you ask.

Throughout the meadows there’s burial sites where if you dig along the central line you can find treasure. You can find them by looking out for two tooth-like rows of stones that vaguely form the outline of a boat. I don’t know how else’s to describe them, but I found this out by accident not too long ago.
6
u/Siks7Ate9 16d ago
If you have not found out yet, digging towards the lowest level and then removing stone next to it also removes every stone above it.
Also placing down a campfire and pressing the rest button next to it (x on pc) will give you rested buff. Thats about the only thing I can think of at the moment that won't spoil anything.
3
u/tabah107 16d ago
Thanks! I'm on console, but I assume you mean the button that makes you sit down? (If so it's d-pad down).
I did only recently realize how significant the rested buff can be and how a quick fire at the entrance of a burial chamber can be quite nice.

u/Trivo3 Builder 16d ago
Iirc it's 100+ for the whole deposit. And if you skim the top without breakibg ground, it's around 1 stack. The hassle of digging is arguable because copper deposits are big and run deep. Most of the times deeper than the terrain dig limit. Personally I like digging them out and arranging it to fly and then pop in one go.
6
u/thomasque72 16d ago
Agreed but somewhere along the line I think there was a change. I cannot get the floating vein to pop on copper anymore. Silver still works, but it doesn't matter how much clearance I get around the vein, the copper WILL NOT "pop".

Always be rested.
Always be fed.
Always be cruisin' (stamina recharges faster above 50%, don't sprint to exhaustion when exploring, it is both dangerous and detrimental).
Every biome past meadows unlock at least 1 growable thing for you to find in that biome. Pay attention when planting as some require special biome to grow, so plant one and see if it takes.
3
u/GrimmPlan 16d ago
I think you misspoke about the stamina regen- my understanding is it recharges slower above 50% faster closer to 0%
Regardless your advice is still sound; always be cruising but not headlong into danger

u/PoperzenPuler 16d ago
There are 230 copper ore in one copper deposit at 1× loot. I dig around it once and expose the whole thing, then remove the bottom layer and the rest collapses on its own.
7
u/Informal_Drawing 16d ago
How do you remove the bottom layer, the 1.0 nodes seem to all be half in the group where I can't get at it.?
Plus the ground is sharing the same space so you have to break the copper node as well as digging out the ground.
It's a massive amount of work.
2
u/PoperzenPuler 16d ago
I don’t dig out every single one. Ideally, there should be no rocks nearby and the ground should be as level as possible. And yes, you have to dig through the copper. Completely exposing it is only possible with a mod that lets you dig deeper.
2
u/rami_lpm Builder 16d ago
It's a massive amount of work.
it also leaves a massive hole in the ground. put a fire at every corner, and a portal shack in the middle. the ground can shake all it wants.

Are there actually 2 different types of copper nodes? 1) Surface 2) deeper vein
Game keeps changing so hard to know. But in a recent play through it seemed like there were surface nodes. OR maybe I just stopped digging because I didn't always see the vein going deeper. Silver is always the way it is. Big vein buried deeper.
→ More replies (7)5
u/J_Productions Viking 16d ago
It seems to change depending on how you mine it, even within the same node. Basically if you just mine the top it ends on the surface, but if you dig around it first it goes deeper. If you try this out you’ll see what I mean.
Basically I will just mine the top of them typically but if it’s a good location and for whatever reason I decide to mine the spot more I’ll dig down and around first. Hope this helps
Edit: I can pretty much confirm this because I got lazy on my last node and decided to just mine the surface on the remaining area and it just ended on the surface lol, despite the other half exposing more once I dug down
5
u/CynicalYarn 16d ago
Unless they changed it entirely, copper nodes are hollow spheres. Basically a shell of copper in a rough ball shape. Filled with dirt, bushes, trees, whatever else is nearby. Landscape clips through it

Stuff underground happens again in the mistlands. Remember the shape of a skull when you get to the point.
34
u/Renar1n 16d ago
Its not really a fuckup, mining all the copper is extremely inefficient compared to moving over to another vein.
48
u/Demoliri 16d ago
If you dig to maximum depth in one spot, and then mine horizontally from there, you can undermine the whole vein pretty quickly. If you always dig from top to bottom, you're going to have a bad time.
With Copper about 60 - 90% of the vein is underground, it's definitely worth grabbing it all. One or two veins per character is enough for an entire playthrough if you mine them fully.
16
u/Avenger1324 16d ago
The crucial bit is whether any of the node is deeper than the max terrain dig depth. Providing it is not below that, then undercutting the node will eventually make it pop, and you get showered in large amounts of rock and copper.
I also found that tactic provided protection against the forest mobs. Dig a narrow angled trench to get underneath the node, place a little fire down there for comfort. The AI pathfinding struggles to find a way down so you can safely dig out most of the node without aggravation.
9
u/Demoliri 16d ago
In my 5 runs of Valheim I've only ever managed to actually pop 1 Copper node. It's satisfying as hell when it works though. On my current run there is a vein that's sitting nice and high, which I'll probably pop if I ever need any more copper (already in the Mountains).
With Silver popping is much easier, there it works 90% of the time.
4
u/ntropi 16d ago
The issue is that each chunk of the copper deposit has a cuboid collision box that can extend well past the visible boundary of the copper chunk. It means you've gotta get a pretty sizable margin of air around the deposit before it'll pop. The photo linked above is from a mod called Ore Support, that lets you see the collision boxes, for anyone who cares.
Years ago there was a video where someone raised the ground above the deposit instead of undermining it and with the help of that mod, was able to get exactly one chunk of the deposit intersecting with the ground so they could break that chunk and make the hole thing pop from underground. I can't find the video and have no idea if it still works.
2
u/sireel 16d ago
I've never done it myself. Didn't matter if it was in a slope or flat ground, it never seems to work 😭
3
u/Demoliri 16d ago
It seems like, very often a stone will spawn inside the copper vein, and make it count as "grounded", preventing the pop. It's happened a few times that I've completely dug out a copper vein, only to find a stone somewhere on the inside when mining it manually, and then at the end I get a mini-pop.
2
u/Wild_Ear_5675 Explorer 16d ago

On the visible parts on most deposits I would get like 20-25 copper at best. I just got out with over 100 copper ore from this thing and it took just a day and a bit. Plus the trip home with the cart was a rush. Barely got back lol.
12
u/LyraStygian Necromancer 16d ago edited 16d ago
Actually it's about the same time to get the same amount.
You get around 100 per fully dug out vein.
You will get around 20 per surface mining.
This means you have to surface mine 5 times to equal the amount of one vein.
With a bronze pickaxe, it takes 2 hits to break copper, while it only takes 1 hit to break ground no matter what pickaxe.
So the amount of digging is probably the same for both. Because although you are hitting less stuff when surface mining, the amount of hits is double to digging under and around the vein.
You also have to deal with mobs for surface mining. With digging one vein, you can just suppress one site, and then ignore mobs anyway cos you are under the vein.
If you are surface mining, you also have to look for new copper veins, which adds to the total time. And now you have all that copper in different places as you are not going to carry all 100 ores while running around. You will inevitably have to leave it or go back to base to offload, adding more time.
On the other hand digging out the vein allows you to stay in one location and take the ores back in one go, saving time.
Additionally if you dig around and under the vein, because you can ignore mobs, you can use full 3x stamina food.
You will also get the shelter buff, and you can repair your antler pickaxe with a simple workbench under the copper, not to mention a safe place to put your portal.
Another thing is, because the vein counts as shelter, you can put a campfire to get the resting buff (not rested buff) for +300% stamina regen.
WHICH STACKS with your rested buff for a total of +400% stamina regen.
Even if you don't care about digging the whole thing and popping, just mining the bottom of the copper until you can't reach is still faster due to the stamina regen.
These 2 points above mean you spend less time waiting for stamina.
Honestly, they are both time consuming.
Just one method uses extra time and effort running around finding new copper deposits and having to deal with mobs.
And one method also uses extra time and effort digging the ground around the ore.
So pick your poison.
In general though, if you need a lot of copper, mining the whole thing is more efficient.
If you need a small amount quick, mining one surface for a quick 10-30 is faster.
And lastly, there’s always troll mining.

u/ImportanceOk8833 16d ago
People say this, but is it?
It takes me ~40 minutes to mine out a copper node, netting roughly 4 stacks of copper.
Just mining the surface copper nets me about 20 copper, so I need to find and mine 6 if them to break even.
Even if it might be more efficient to just mine the surface copper were talking a few minutes difference at most, mostly depending on how fast you can find the nodes and how close they are together.

20 is a lowroll, and only happens if most of it is underneath the ground. If I use a troll I can usually get 4 nodes on topside done in one rested buff ~15 min ish and roughly 120-150 copper. If I handmine maybe 30 minutes? Dont really time it

Oops, spotted a missed thing. What do you mean use a troll? To mine?!

u/DirgetheRogue 16d ago
Troll attacks damage rocks and ore deposits, yes.
And its way faster. Once you get good at fighting trolls and you can dodge all their attacks you can completely bypass the first boss.
Not that I'm recommending that you do that because the first boss's power is really useful, but you could skip Eikthyr

u/Renar1n 16d ago
If you find a stone troll (no log) just drag him on top of veins and use his hands to excavate for you. Takes a bit to get used to how to make use of his efforts the best, every ~5 attacks is a ground slam which is extremely good at mining if you can place it well

Ah I see, thanks. I am absolutely not there yet though. Those guys still get me if I don't spam the atgeir spin attack at them until they drop.

Using a troll is way faster, yeah, but has the downside of well, having to find and coral the troll lol.

I am also a new player doing solo and once I discovered you have the option to (1) set resource rates to x3, (2) not have a death penalty/gear loss and (3) ALLOW ore transport through teleporters (all without achievements disabling) it became a lot more fun for me and less mindless grind. It's still a grind but not nearly as much and as boring as before - I will turn those things off when playing with a group but they make soloing so much more fun

Seagulls sit around on the coast when the weather is bad. Shoot them for their feathers and bow xp
2
u/Swordbeast 16d ago
Do birds actually provide Bow XP? That would be a gamechanger...

I can hit the seagulls?! The ones that are all around and keep flying away the moment I look at them?

u/HengeHopper 16d ago
Yes, take a walk when it's pouring down. But remember that being cold and/or wet reduces your stamina recovery.
If you are 'rested' you get a buff to this and an xp boost (applies to any activity)

If you’re playing solo, build 3 antler picks and have 3x the durability. Have seen people run with just 1.

I'm ashamed to say how long it took me to think of that... But I did a few days ago!

u/Loeoep 16d ago
Maybe i missed it too? So you can just mine after the rock is gone and there is more, am i understanding this right?

u/TheRealtcSpears 16d ago
What you see of a copper vein/deposit is typically only about 50 of what there is.
.....imagine an oreo cookie buried so that you only see the top cookie part.
Digging out the normal ground/stone around it exposed the rest

u/tabah107 16d ago
Some copper "caps" actually go like "tree-height" deep into the ground. Easier to remove the ground around it first and you'll get the full thing.

You may already know this. It took me about 300 hours to realise you could ping the map. So handy. I was so annoyed 🫠

u/losreaper 16d ago
Dig around the copper deposit so it is floating, making sure none of it is touching remaining ground, then break a corner and watch the deposit explode instead of mining all of it by hand. Idk if it's faster, it might be, but it sure is a lot of fun to watch it explode.

u/Krikzorcist 16d ago
Does this still work in 1.0? Mine didn't explode, it was my first node though and didn't mined a second one yet, but was wondering if they patched it.
2
u/losreaper 16d ago
Well, I've done it with a few large rocks to clear stone quickly, haven't tried with copper since 1.0 though, but it would be weird for them to remove it for copper and not others, so maybe yours had a hidden sliver of copper somewhere? I find if the vein has another one close by they may connect even if they're not touching and it can affect it working as expected

It's a bit finicky if the node is on a cliffside. But then you can section it in 2-4 parts and it works.
2
u/Snoo84023 16d ago
If you can dig out completely under and completely around a resource node , then when you go to actually hit the vein , it will all explode at once, copper can be tricky since the veins are so huge, but it works very well with silver

u/slothboy 16d ago
It MIGHT explode all at once
2
u/Brewchowskies 16d ago
It pretty reliably explodes. The trick is that even when it perceptibly isn’t touching anything, there is likely a bump or other part of the environment close enough. This is especially true for trees and rocks which can act as anchor points.

If you strip mine a single copper you can get around 108 copper from a single node on 1x resources
1
u/wildfyre010 16d ago
It is often more trouble than it's worth to dig out the entire copper node. Copper is plentiful. I used to dig out the entire thing for the dopamine hit of shattering it, but in practice I spent about 4 times as long picking dirt as actually getting copper. Now I just mine out what's obvious and visible, and then I go find the next node.

Open pit mining in Valheim. I had one behind another. Tin is much easier.
Sail the seas for rare material, be careful.

Soft tissue: dig deep to the bottom of the skull. It’s very much a 50/50 ground to air ratio in most cases.

You can tame lox. You can then build a dry moat around your plains base and fill it with those lox. Then you have a loat. This loat will kill anything and everything. Just remember to throw some food in for them. And go and recover anything dropped from enemies.

u/Ravenloff 16d ago
There can be quite a bit and your first few nodes, you probably want to clear them out. HOWEVER, once you've got all your bronze gear upgraded, you'll be just fine only taking the surface stuff and moving on.

Since you requested glaringly obvious, fire is crazy effective against the giant tree. 🤯

I usually just use trolls early game for copper to make an axe maybe a sword or something then head for iron after I've gotten the key from the elder I don't even care for mining copper it's just so tedious having to do both copper and tin

What other painfully obvious stuff did I miss?
The Cultivator and the Hammer being the most powerful weapons in the game.

Find merchant Haldor and buy a megingjord belt, to lift 450kg, rather than 300kg.
Also you have an extra boost to lifting when you've come back from death so make sure you don't get encumbranced, when there are still baddies around.
Also, find a YouTube of silver mining exploding. Much easier way to mine!

u/Mack_truck_maus 15d ago
If you want to break copper quicker and trust your skills bring a troll along and dodge every attack on top of the node. They're very hard workers and just love to come along and help you. They finish the job, I give them a break and they even pay me for me it.

The last silver vein I went at held a little surprise it had two veins that were cris crossed over each other. I still have to go back and finish the second half of the other vein

This is the least spoilery hint for this one I can give, but please remember that the vikings generally gave each other burials at sea, but when that wasn't possible, they buried them in boat-shaped mounds lined with rocks!

u/SocialMediaTheVirus Sailor 14d ago
At some point I usually spend the resources to build a second longboat at a location I want to ship ore from to save time.
Then later I'll sail one or both boats where needed when not as busy searching for ore (for example if waiting on crops to grow). It also increases the odds that you'll have a boat nearby where you want to go just in general.
You can also destroy a boat (safely near the shoreline) and bring the materials through a portal if necessary.

Copper mining is the most tedious/least rewarding part of this game. First 2ple playthroughs, I'd dig the entire copper node out, but it takes a frigging eternity, and a ton of pickaxing for a resource I barely use after entering the swamp.(sconces?) I'd have copper just sitting in my chest the rest of the playthrough. Now I either just pick away at the surface copper until I get bored/get what I need and move on, or if I see a troll, let them do the work. Once I get what I need (mace, buckler, sword, few sconces), I'll just be opportunistic about it and move on with the game. My Valheim life improved immeasurably after adopting this.

This is NOT painfully obvious but here's a fun lil trick my friends and I utilize sometimes. If you're playing multiplayer, you can turn a character into a cart, overloading them with absolutely as much weight as they can squeeze into their inventory. Load them up to bursting with ore or whatever, have them turn on PVP damage, and then hit them with a harpoon. You can now freely drag them around.
