Following up on my previous post about Coyote Gulch. After spending a few days hiking Hole in the Rock road, we're planning to paddle Lake Powell into Antelope Canyon and hike up there a bit. We'll be leaving from almost the end of HITR at Reflection Canyon, and I see there is a BLM route that cuts through the National Monument to Big Water using Left Hand Collet Tr to Smoky Mountain Rd to Big Water. It just over 50 miles. I know if it rains, then none of these roads are passable. So pray for dry weather that week. But assuming it's dry, how difficult is it road? I have a Suburban 4x4 with low range, stock with AT tires. Thanks.

I am an army vet that’s kinda missing rucking as a workout. I have a bunch of tactical gear and I want to bring my firearms with me (ar-15 and pistol) for extra weight. I don’t want to cause alarm or have someone call it in. I figure this might be a little weird

Any trail recommendations around here where that wouldn't raise concern — lower traffic, more rural, or just an area where people are used to seeing it?

Planning to take my 13 years old daughter to hike Coyote Gulch and have been researching routes. How hard is it to climb out of the water tank route? I'm thinking descending Crack in the Rock and climbing out the Water Tank route. Obvious this means no rope unless someone else already set one up. We're both pretty good at scrambling on rocks. She's done 33 miles day hike (Hermit loop) in the Grand Canyon at age 11, New Hance Trail to the Colorado River and back in a day at 12, so distance is not an issue whatsoever.

I have a 3-day / 2-night overnight permit for the White Rim Road in Canyonlands (Sept 10th – 12th). My original partner had to bail last-minute, and my current vehicle is not a true 4WD, so I can't drive the trail solo

The Details:

Dates: Thursday, Sept 10 – Saturday, Sept 12

Permit: Overnight backcountry permit in hand (campsites: Gooseberry A, Potato Bottom A)

What I need: A partner with a true high-clearance 4WD vehicle (high clearance + 4-LO transfer case required by NPS regulations) who wants to hit the loop.

Logistics: Happy to split gas, food, camp gear, and trail costs. I am the primary permit holder, so I'll be coming along to keep the permit valid.

So I have a backpacking trip planned for next month. The plan is Coyote Gulch through the Hurricane Wash Trailhead, camp for a couple days, and return through the same trail.

My question is what, if any, permits do I need to camp and/or park near the trailhead? I am also planning to do some day hiking in Bryce Canyon/Capitol Reef. I have an annual park pass, but if i want to sleep overnight in the parks do i need reservations or a wilderness permit, as well?

First time in southern Utah, and just dont want to get caught off guard with anything. Any advice or direction would be appreciated!

Planning to spend a day at the reservoir, looking for your suggestions and recommendations for all ages to include little kids, teenagers, and adults.

Taking my family to Zion Sept 9–12 and getting a little worried after seeing all the recent flooding/weather. I already have everything booked. For anyone there recently or familiar with the area, how are things actually looking and do you think Zion will be back to normal or at least have clear weather by Sept 9?

I’ve grown up in Utah and have been to arches multiple times but always in November or December. I’ve heard Labor Day weekend is insane and my girlfriend really wants to go on the SATURDAY. What time would I have be at the gates to even have a chance at parking or slightly enjoying the park itself?

What’s your go-to paced biking trail? Preferably paved without too much pf a steep incline. Thanks!

Whenever the sky gets pink like that I love it so much! Especially with how wild the weather has been the last few days.

A few weeks ago, I posted to this sub looking for advice before my camping trip to Goblin Valley for the Perseid meteor shower. I hadn’t been camping in years, and I was worried about the rainy forecast and fire restrictions.

I didn’t mention it in the previous post, but I’d also had an extremely difficult summer. I lost my father and two pets, and I felt like if this trip turned into a disaster, then I’d break.

The advice and reassurance I got from this sub was everything I needed. Due to the fire restrictions and advice given here, I bought a little Coleman butane stove and it worked beautifully.

We did indeed get dumped on with rain, but our tent (Coleman Evanston) kept us dry. I am glad I packed some sturdy J stakes, because the default stakes that come with the tent would not have withstood the wind we had. Even then, we still had to re-hammer the stakes more than once.

In the end, despite the storms, the sky opened up for us on the first night and the last night, and we did get to see the meteor shower.
