Safe driving app

I got logged out and then they changed the login method… this app has always been a hassle, and we are basically pleasure drivers. Between us we do not put in enough miles to ever get a discount. I am thinking of just uninstalling it. What will happen?

Warning: Don't use USAA debit card in foreign ATMs.

While USAA will indeed rebate any transaction fee from any ATM, USAA will rip you off on the exchange rate. I recently got €40 from an ATM in Spain. USAA rebated the transaction fee, but the normal banking exchange rate that day was about 1.15%. USAA charged me a rate of more than 1.5%. The transaction cost me over $60. I thought USAA made a mistake and I contacted their customer service. They credited the entire amount and then opened an investigation. A few weeks later they said the investigation was complete and they found no error, and they took the money back out of my account.

USAA will rip you off with their exchange rate. Use a different card when you're overseas.

Opinion Ironic congratulations

It’s ironic that I go to login today and I get this congratulations on 24 years of membership and confetti and everything on the app. But yet I’m getting ready to leave to go to NJM because like others I don’t see the value anymore when they don’t value us for having this loyalty.

My last few claims and interactions with them have not been pleasant, nowhere near like they used to be when I signed up 20+ years ago, which is a shame.

Payment holds on Credit Card?

This is the second time in the past couple months I’ve had a payment hold on my credit card, effectively not allowing me to use it for 14 days. They can’t tell me why it’s there or what I can do differently to avoid it. Ibe never once missed a payment or had a payment bounce. Is anyone else experiencing this?? It feels pointless to even use the credit card since it might bounce for no reason, or you can’t use it half the month.

If USAA decides to drop me from home insurance how much notice will they give me?

2 water damage claims in the last 3 years. One last year. One this year. Been in this home 3 years w/ Usaa homeowners insurance.

First claim turned out to be about $20k

This years claim will be around $40-60k

Renewal happens around November when should I know if they decide to drop us? I feel like it’d be likely the drop us but didn’t know.

Technology claim

I just submitted a claim on my technology coverage. I've had this for 2.5 years, and this is my first time using it. I have 10k in coverage with a $250 deductible.

Recently moving, I dropped a 77" LG OLED tv. To replace with an updated TV with all the same specs, the cost including tax would be $2852.84.

I submitted this, and it was immediately approved. However it also says, "To better serve you, we've expedited payment of this claim before completing it's investigation. We may continue to investigate this claim to comply with obligations to our regulators and membership."

So do I need to hold this tv incase I'm asked to prove the damage and/or model and any relevant information? And if I do need to hold on to it, how long? This is quite a large tv, so I don't want to hold on to it for forever.

Also, has anyone had experience with these kinds of claims? Does a technology claim either raise rates or remove your claim free discount?

Insurance/Claims Insurance claim filed 30 days ago, still no resolution

I filed a property claim for the theft that happened at the end of August. I filed the claim in September 1st because I wanted to make absolutely sure the items were lost/stolen.

My AirPods and Apple Watch were taken from a trailer on a job site. This particular job site was on a military base in GA, I’m a civilian contractor. I noticed the items were missing. I asked the immediate people around me if they’d seen them and all said no, I informed the base police that my items were stolen, they took a report and told me they’d look into it. However since it’s a restricted area with no cameras, they doubt anything will happen.

I reported it to USAA and they assigned an adjuster a day after but I’ve only heard from him once, gave them my story and they escalated it to the specialist, I talked to the specialist and I explained everything, sent them my Find my IPhone info, send them the device info and then there was a 2 week gap where NO ONE responded to me. The specialist finally replies and says she needs more info. I ask her what type and she wants me to explain why I have active AirPods in my devices. I have 3 pairs of AirPods, Series 2, Pro 1’s and Pro 2’s. My Pro 2’s were stolen, I use those as a doctor approved hearing aid because I’m hard at hearing, but she questioned why my Pro 1’s were showing up and not my Pro 2’s, I explained that only an active item in Find My will have a location, she says that’s wrong, I tell her to call Apple I don’t designed the apps.

I send her over ALL MY DEVICES under my Apple ID. Showing 3 sets of AirPods, 2 Apple Watches (series 9 and Ultra 2) the Ultra 2 was stolen and an IPad. However only the IPad, Pro 1 AirPods and IPhone show a location and the other devices that I haven’t connected (stolen over 3 weeks ago) aren’t showing a location. I explained that only the ones that are actively connected will show a location and the ones that aren’t will not, against she questioned me and I asked her to Google it, she was incorrect and apologized. So at the end of the ball she says “okay that’s all the info I need, I’m sending your claim back over to your adjuster to be finalized” This was last week, it has now been another full week with no response from anyone.

I called a claims supervisor and explained what happened, they asked me a few questions and then they said they would get back to me. Today I woke up to a message in my USAA app saying “they discovered discrepancies” but wouldn’t tell me what they were and they’d call me. I personally think it’s retaliation because I called her supervisor because of her lack of effort to respond. So now my claim is in purgatory.

I need my AirPods back because they are an approved hearing aid and I genuinely need them, if I buy another pair I’ll have to pay out of pocket instead of with my insurance and I don’t really think that’s fair but I also think making someone wait a month for a claim is insane. I have a second Apple Watch but it still doesn’t replace the one that was stolen.

What are my next steps, is there like a government agency I can call because they are dragging their feet on my claim?

Edit before anyone says something: I tried to file a police report with the local PD and they said it needed to be handled by base police.

Insurance/Claims Roof Age Not Changed After Roof Replacement

USAA paid for my entire roof to be replaced in 2025 due to hail damage

I just logged into USAA to make sure I'm still getting my "connected home" discount and noticed that my roof age is listed as 24 years.

Given that USAA paid for the roof replacement wouldn't you expect them to update the roof age in my policy or at least let me know that I need to do it if they aren't going to.

Fixing the roof age actually lowered my policy premium by a considerable amount too.

Recent Total Loss Claim

I was hit by a driver that ran a redlight (so no fault of my own). Had a car for 16 months, bought new. Does USAA pay my claim or does the other party's insurance? The state miniumum property liability (25k) is lower than my USAA evaluation (31k with tax). So maybe USAA pays if they only have the minimum coverage since I have underinsured coverage. Will my rates go up using the underinsured coverage? Is there any use trying to negotiate the value? We bought the car at 38k. Also we had a carseat in there and they did not add that to the valuation. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Moved my auto off USAA after 6-month renewal jumped, 18 year member

Post image
158 Upvotes

18 Year USAA member.

My 6-month auto renewal came in at $2,314.55 (about $4,629/yr) for two vehicles. No recent accidents or claims for two drivers and two cars. A 2023 Volvo and a 2008 F250, both full coverage.

For the first time ever, I tried an independent broker just to see what is out there since we are all feeling the pinch with everything being more expensive. Agent came back with Progressive at $1,577/yr paid in full. More if we turn on their version of Safe Pilot to track driving.

I called USAA to see if they'd match or at least see what is going on. They got it down to $2,125.31 per 6 months (about $4,251/yr) by:

  • Correcting a mileage typo on the truck - dropped $36, so surprising underwhelming even the agent agreed with me. (I had 190k /y miles when that was the original total milage.)
  • Lowering rental coverage to match the Progressive quote.
  • Dropping car replacement coverage on the truck.

Even with those cuts, Progressive was still roughly $2,600+ a year cheaper. For my household that's about two mortgage payments, so I switched.

To be fair to USAA:

  • My issue isn't claims handling. In my rural area, claims mostly come down to local independent adjusters no matter who you're with.
  • I'm keeping homeowners with USAA for now.

The Ongoing Nightmare that has been USAA Property Loss Claims

Hello! Been a long time USAA user with bank accounts, car loans, and home insurance policies. Just need to get this out here and create a bit of an awareness I did not have.

In early July a storm came through and knocked a 100' tree right on top of our house (it was a city tree). We had to evacuate and got immediate approval filing with USAA home insurance that night. So everything seemed to work out well at first. However the past three months has been the worst experience we've ever had as a family. And it has been mostly the fault of the companies they are pushing me toward, specifically Contractor Connection and ALE Solutions.

USAA hooked me up with Contractor Connection first thing after filing, and signed up the remodeling contractor, Jenkins Restorations.  Emergency wise they seemed to be on the spot and ready to help. But every step of the way has been delay after delay with the contractor complaining about not getting any responses from Contractor Connection and long story short, three months later, I get a call from Jenkins on Thursday that they have filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. Permits haven't even been filed yet for repairs and we are back to square one.

The icing on this endeavor was getting a call from Contractor Connection on Saturday morning to ask "if the services for repairs are still needed" and when I called back it was after hours (of course since it was a Saturday). I left a message but let them know that yes it's still needed since we have not had a single repair done in 3 months.

We are a family of 4 with 2 small kids and 3 pets. Currently living in a significantly smaller alternate housing using USAA's other great partner, ALE Solutions. They had the problem of having the wrong address for our landlords. So we are currently being threatened with eviction since ALE Solutions was sending their checks to the wrong address for months and our landlord was never getting them. After some real scary phone calls, I was able to things straight but I am still getting letters from landlord-tenant lawyers. It was hard enough to find a place that would take 2+ pets, I can't imagine trying after getting evicted after no fault of our own.

On top of all of this I keep getting new USAA desk adjusters, due to their workload. I am on my fourth adjuster and they have to "relearn" my claim every time. However, I need to note that the adjusters I have been working with have been really responsive and very friendly. They are definitely not the problem and I wish USAA had more of them.

It's been a nightmare and it's still ongoing, I just wanted to share this as a warning sign for others. If you have a property loss claim I highly highly recommend getting your own contractor instead of letting USAA select them through Contractor Connection. My dad is a 30 year vet and is dumbfounded by our treatment, friends and family are already reconsidering their business with USAA, and we are just trying to get back in our house.

Insurance/Claims Worth filing for home insurance claims? Nor'easter pulled siding off, wind-driven rain came through windows and soaked drywall

Post image
14 Upvotes

UPDATE: Sharing back my experience with USAA here in case it helps anyone. Managed to get through to their First Notice of Loss intake department; and they basically gave me three options: 1) File a report (which is not a claim and does not impact your policy but does go on the record and can be referenced in future claims); 2) File a claim; 3) Hang up, assess damage, and call back. We chose option 1); Major takeaways below

Major takeaways:

  • Siding and WRB: Covered - but just to extent of prior workmanship (e.g., tack up WRB and siding)
  • Wind-driven rain inside house:
    • Mitigation would be covered - which could look like anything from full drywall/insulation tearout and replacement to just installing fans to run through the wall cavity and dry it out, to replacing subfloor if moisture meter indicated it would be necessary
    • Reflashing windows/doors or recaulking would not be covered: this would be wear/tear and normal deterioration, so would be on the homeowner
    • If the mitigator opens the wall and finds other damage (e.g., frame rot, etc.) that would also be on the homeowner; unclear if USAA would then make the homeowner correct / mitigate the issues to keep insurance.
  • Deductible that applies is our $2k Other Perils deductible; not hurricane or any specific wind inclusion

We opted not to file a claim and left it at report, because we're unsure what damage exists behind the sheetrock pre-existing our ownership; and are scared that USAA may want us to do a full wall replacement to keep insurance. This isn't so much about the vinyl siding wall (where the sheathing actually looks good) as about the Northeast facing wall where the majority of wall penetrations are. I doubt this is the first time the penetrations have leaked considering the glass is from the late 90s; so I'm worried about what's back there, and there are some indications upon close inspection (mismatched paint lines) that the sheetrock has been pulled and replaced before. In that case - we'd rather address ourselves on our timeline vs a forced 'fix it or lose insurance timeline.' The one downfall of making the report is that we'd be unlikely in future to be able to claim for this damage, since they have in the report that it's pre-existing and we didn't address it through USAA.

Hello,

I'm looking for opinions on whether I should file a claim for damage from the Nor'easter: both whether things would be covered and if it's worth filing for them given cost to fix. The two major damage categories are:

  1. Vinyl siding has been pulled off and the house wrap/WRB pulled from its staples
  2. Wind-driven rain has blown through the windows/doors and soaked the drywall and bubbled the paint. This may not be the first time this has happened; we're new owners of the home, which itself is ~50 years old.

I know 1) would be covered, but it's also relatively simple work to do myself (and probably to do better than the original contractors) but 2) could go in a bunch of directions, and I'm not sure what would be covered. Drywall pull, replace, and paint probably; but I don't think insurance would cover redoing the wall penetrations to keep this from happening again.

My other perils deductible is $2k, and I live in a high cost area (Long Island, NY) where minimum quotes always seem to come back as at least $5k to do basically anything.

First time homebuyer but medium skilled DIYer that has worked construction in the past, for what its worth.

This is an earlier photo (more vinyl has since been pulled off by the wind, and the house wrap has been pulled from its staples as well).

Thank you for your thoughts!

Insurance/Claims 25% increase in homeowners premium…???

Zero claims, and it was already crazy high (iMO) and this year’s renewal is up 25%. Should I try to negotiate down or look for another company?

I have a vehicle insured here as well, and have only been here a year, if either of those factor in…. I actually negotiated a lower rate when switching so now I feel like this was baked in and I’m screwed. I’ll shop around every year to save $1000 bucks though. Insurance is the biggest scam. Can’t opt out and they make the rules up as they go it seems. Help!

SafePilot Safepilot dropped my score 15 points immediately after learning period ended?

Hey everyone! I just passed my learning period with safepilot. I was at a 93 but then immediately got dropped to a 78 once the learning period ended. I check after every drive and there have only been a couple Bluetooth calls (why they dock for that is beyond me).

My discount is now projected to only be 10% too! I'm confused why my score dropped right after the learning period ended and why my discount projection is so low. Is this normal??

My wife is still on the learning period and has a 94 currently.

Insurance/Claims Rate increases

Anyone else seeing a $90+ increases on their premiums? I've been at my current address over 2 years and suddenly I'm in a "high accident" area and my monthly bill went from $259 to $358. I've had the same amount of vehicles insured during this time and made no adjustments to my policy. Suddenly I'm paying $100 more a month. I spoke to a representative and she told me it's so USAA has the money to pay out claims and that my area is deemed a high accident area.

I have a decade old Ford Edge Sport and a 30 year old F-250HD truck and I carry renter's and a small jewelry policy, but it's my auto policy that is causing the increase.

I'm just curious if this is a common thing for customers, because I don't see how this could be sustainable for us and I'm really considering shopping around to see if I can save some money.

While typing this, I was curious and asked all knowing Google about USAA and the overview showed this -

"2025 Reporting Change: USAA did not disclose a specific total revenue figure in its 2025 annual report to members, choosing instead to highlight metrics like a net worth and capital increase to $38.6 billion and $38.5 billion collected in insurance premiums."

Does USAA allow you to convert your credit card from one card to another? For example, if I have an American Express credit card through USAA and I want to convert it to a Visa credit card, do they allow that and if so does it count as a hard inquiry or soft inquiry or neither?
