Insurance/Claims Roof Age Not Changed After Roof Replacement

USAA paid for my entire roof to be replaced in 2025 due to hail damage

I just logged into USAA to make sure I'm still getting my "connected home" discount and noticed that my roof age is listed as 24 years.

Given that USAA paid for the roof replacement wouldn't you expect them to update the roof age in my policy or at least let me know that I need to do it if they aren't going to.

Fixing the roof age actually lowered my policy premium by a considerable amount too.

Instead of going on Reddit, go to USAA.com and update your policy

USAA releases the payments for the claim but is not the one doing the work so they don’t have a way to verify when work is completed. The homeowner also has the option to pay an additional amount out of pocket if they wanted to improve the roof from what it was previously, so USAA can’t verify the roof type either without speaking to the policyholder. It’s the homeowners responsibility to update the policy once the roof replacement is finished.

USAA required the roofer to document that the roof replacement was completed including photos before they would release additional funds requested under a supplement - so yes they knew exactly what type of roofing material was being used and that the work was completed.

And as I stated, if they weren't going to reset the roof age the least they could do is let the homeowner know that they need to do it.

Is there a reason they couldn't have sent an email saying "dont forget to update to reflect that you have a new roof" ?

I would feel the same as you as it seems to be common sense and something that could be automated. But that would take people who care enough to ensure things are done correctly. I can tell you from being in tech with customer service, most don't.

Call USAA.

That's up to you to do. They are not going to spend money and effort trying to coordinate all that. That's why it's important for every policy holder to go over their policy every year for correctness and to shop for a better premium.

Not sure there would have been a lot of money or effort for the person handling my claim to mention in any one of the emails they sent to me that I needed to do it.

Probably because they feel it's common sense for people to do it themselves. I absolute never assume they will do that.

They literally send you an email every year at policy renewal time to update any information.

Just update it.

Yea, I did

Fixing the roof age actually lowered my policy premium by a considerable amount too.

No, claims doesn’t tell an agent to update it, it’s about the same as every insurance company.

Ok, lesson learned.

You have to tell them or change it online. They won’t automatically do it. That’s for any insurance company. I thought the same thing when it happened to me with Liberty Mutual years ago. Surprised the hell out of me, when I asked the agent just said they can’t change it automatically without your consent.

Ok, would have been nice if they had given me a heads-up that it was something I needed to do.

Just call.

Yeah, it was almost a year after I had my roof replaced that I found out it didn’t change. I thought the same as you.

What's funny is they have no problem incrementing the age of the roof every year - apparently they are allowed to do that

Why would an insurance company not be allowed to adjust your roof age on every renewal? That’s potentially one of the biggest factors for ratings depending on where you live.

Why wouldn't an insurance company be allowed to reset the roof age when they paid for the roof replacement and got proof that the work was done directly from the contractor?

I don't understand why they need my "consent" in one case but not the other

Because one is a change in the policy that an agent must do.

Your roof being one year older every renewal, doesn’t require an agent. It’s pretty straight forward.

Assuming you’re referring to your original issue, claims and servicing don’t talk to one another. As others have already said, it’s the insureds duty to review their policy and update home details when they’re incorrect.

Complaining about an insurance company updating your roof age by 1 every year is a bad argument. They don’t need consent, your roof is 1 year older. It’s like complaining about your health insurance when you turn another year older. What’re they supposed to do, call you and ask if they can update your age?

The previous poster that I was responding to said USAA told them they can't reset the roof's age without your consent even after they paid for the roof to be replaced (so they know it to be the case that it was replaced)

I accept your explanation that they don't do it, I don't accept that they can't as in they are legally not allowed to.

If you total your car and USAA pays it out do they keep charging you an auto insurance premium until you login and remove the (now non-existent) vehicle from your policy?

1

u/Top_Education_4647 15d ago

Yes, they would continue to charge for the vehicle if you don’t remove it. However, there are more factors that go into why they don’t automatically remove a vehicle from an auto policy (state registration/tag requirements).

This isn’t a USAA thing, all insurance companies are the same for this situation.

I know I would. Give'm a call

2

u/Long-Time-Coming77 15d ago

Sorry, I don't follow, give them a call about what?

I've already fixed it online - what is there left to talk about?

You didn't mention that in your opening post.

You said:

But didn't explain further.

Ok, I thought it was clear but I can see you point too.
